RE: Transferring Music to Mac

2014-03-10 Thread David Griffith
This depends on a number of things.
1. whether the music was synched using your Maverick MacBook
2. or the music came from another iTunes installation such as one on a PC.
3. If it is music you have bought on iTunes.

If it music synched from your Maverick computer it is already there.
If it is music you have bought on iTunes you can download it onto any of
your max 5 signed in iTunes installation but you need to amend settings to
allow this -
If it is from another iTunes installation on another computer then this is
more complicated.

If you are asking if you can use your iPod to transfer music from one
computer to another like a USB drive this is not normally allowed and is
certainly actively discouraged by Apple. I think there may be some
unofficial Mac apps which can help but you will have to buy these. From
what I have seen on their web sites Apple do not want to support this and
all the messages I see on their sites stress that you should never regard
your iPhone/iPad/iPod as a backup storage device. You should never consider
it possible to transfer music content back off these devices.

There are 2 reasons for this. Firstly Apple do not want their devices to
support a potential function of music piracy. They say that on every iTunes
library you should recreate your library using original sources CDs
external drives etc.

Secondly and more cynically, they want you to pay for this kind of
flexibility through something called iTunes Match.

the easiest way to achieve what I think you want is probably to subscribe to
itunes Match for £21.99 for at least a year. This allows you to upload your
entire iTunes Library into the cloud and can then download or stream it onto
a specified number of devices, including your MacBook.

I believe the command has changed in Maverick to take account of tabbed

Someone on the list who has Mavericks will know but personally I would

RE: Transferring Music to Mac

2014-03-10 Thread David Griffith
Well your options are then to purchase iTunes Match or recreate a library on
your MacBook with original music sources.

If you take the latter approach you will need really to decide which library
you wish your iPod to be synched with. If you synch it with your Mavericks
computer whilst it has no music on it this will delete the existing music on
the iPod.

You can nominate individual files to synch by going through your library
and checking and unchecking them but this is a very tedious affair I find.

To my mind Apple are just encouraging people to invest in Match with this
approach.

After making these 2 changes you should find the folders will open up from

What does it mean when I hear voice over say dropbox has no windows?
This means that you have probably tried to open the DropBox app rather
than
your DropBox folder.
There is little value in opening the DropBox app in this way and you will
normally get this message.
To open your dropbox folder hit command shift H to go to your home
folder.
Interact, open the main user folder , which will be your name and then
inside that folder you will find Desktop, Documents, Downloads and then
finally your DropBox folder. You can access and use your dropbox folder
as
a normal Finder folder from here. If you want a quicker way to getting
there
hit shift VO M on the dropbox folder and select make alias. This alias is
like a Windows shortcut and you can for example copy or move it to the
desktop. So you can get to your DropBox folder there.
If you really need to get to the Dropbox app use VO M twice to get to
menu

extras and access the options there but getting to settings is an
accessibility challenge with Voiceover in ML at least.

Hello Eleanor. It is just as easy or even easier to create an alias for drop
box like someone mentioned earlier. This can be copied to the mac desktop which
is the area that hold the drives or the original finder area. Once moved there
you can access your folders very easily.

RE: Dropbox Folder on Doc

2014-03-10 Thread David Griffith
Well I am not sure that the Dock is a good way to access the DropBox folder
or any folder in this way. I would suggest an alternative approach

The thing about the Dock is it is great for cascading menus, so for example
I have a folder of all my favourites on the dock, simply copied across from
my windows PC and it works great but as I say it is in a cascading menu.
This is fantastic for convenient access as the windows just put themselves
away after use and do not need to be closed.

For Dropbox I would suggest you do what I do which is ,I find, much more
convenient.

1. Locate your dropBox folder.
2. Hit shift vo M to bring up the context menu and then select make alias.
3. Copy this alias to the Desktop.
4. With the dropbox alias highlight Shit VO 1 to allocate VO hotspot 1 to
your DropBox folder alias.
5. Now hitting VO 1 will jump you straight to your Dropbox alias folder and
you can then VO space on it to open it.

 Hi all,

Just went to vmware fusion to add a key mapping for an insert key and I

I went to preferences and on the key mappings I clicked on add then in the
from box I hit the grav key then went to the to combo box and went to make
sure it was set to insert and then I could not get out of it. I hit vo
space and it said confirm but was not sure what to do at that point as I
kep getting stuck and had to keep clearing the box and starting over and
that was a pain. Was I doing something wrong?

 Thanks.

I'm not sure what you're asking here.
The terminal program that comes with osx works just fine, Iuse it
nearly every day.
What specifically are you having trouble doing? Perhaps there's
something that could be done to make your usability better.

Well I am not sure that the Dock is a good way to access the DropBox
folder

or any folder in this way. I would suggest an alternative approach

The thing about the Dock is it is great for cascading menus, so for
example
I have a folder of all my favourites on the dock, simply copied across
from

my windows PC and it works great but as I say it is in a cascading menu.

5. Now hitting VO 1 will jump you straight to your Dropbox alias folder
and

you can then VO space on it to open it.

To be able to view folders on the dock usefully With Voiceover you need
to

make a change to the settings of the folder icon on the Dock.

You need to
1. Change the view option from stack to folder.
2. Change the folder view from grid to list.

You will find both these options if you navigate to the folder on the doc
and bring up the context menu with shift VO M.

After making these 2 changes you should find the folders will open up
from

the Dock a little like the cascade window you used to get in Windows XP
start menu.

A caution again that I am still on ML so I cannot guarantee that this is
the
same in Mavericks.

What does it mean when I hear voice over say dropbox has no windows?
This means that you have probably tried to open the DropBox app rather
than
your DropBox folder.
There is little value in opening the DropBox app in this way and you
will

normally get this message.
This alias
is

like a Windows shortcut and you can for example copy or move it to the
desktop. So you can get to your DropBox folder there.
If you really need to get to the Dropbox app use VO M twice to get to
menu
extras and access the options there but getting to settings is an
accessibility challenge with Voiceover in ML at least.

What does it mean when I hear Downloads in stacks?

I have not personally
heard this but I think you may be hearing simply that a download has
arrived. IT seems TO BE related to having a downloads stack in the
dock

which I personally do not have. It may be a Mavericks thing. A Google
search on your question revealed the following explanation.

pages takes up a lot of cpu for the first few minutes

2014-03-10 Thread Sarah k Alawami
Hello to all. I have an old clunker of a mac which might be causing this but
here you go

when i launch pages i notice it takes up a lot of cpu starting a few minutes
after i launch the app and continuing for a few more minutes. I hear a lot of
hard drive activity when this happens. It only happens once then it's fine.
It's like it is trying to write a cache of some kind, or trying to do an auto
save just once. Does anyone have this with the new pages? I'm trying to
recognize a pattern to this but I don't as of yet see one.

macbook pro mid 2009 with 4 gigs of ram and 250 gig hard drive.

Thanks.

Bookmarks on iPad

2014-03-10 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I am setting up an iPad for a friend. I am familiar with the iPhone but not the
iPad.

the iPad has a bookmark in Safari which gives access to the iPad User Guide. I
have created a Books folder on the iPad home screen containing ibooks. I would
like to move the Safari bookmark for the iPad User Guide into my Books folder
so that my friend sees it just like another book. Is that possible?

I can foresee other cases where it would be useful to move selected Safari
bookmarks into folders on the home screen. Is that possible?

Many thanks.

I’ve encountered this problem as well, and the solution is to use the tab and
spacebar keys, and don’t, repeat, do not use the vo arrow keys to navigate in
the scheduler. At least in the boxes where you check off what days to schedule,
using the vo keys to navigate cause the boxes to automatically check when you
land on them. So, use the tab key and when you come to a day you want to check,
press spacebar on it. Strange I know, but that’s the deal.

RE: Renaming Alias Folder on Desktop

2014-03-10 Thread David Griffith

I do not understand the first part of your question.

In relation to your second question these files are called alias because
they are not the actual folder but a shortcut file pointing to the actual
folder. So you can , for example, safely delete the alias to your dropbox
folder without any impact on the actual dropbox folder.

In short they perform the same function as shortcut on Windows.

This means that you have probably tried to open the DropBox app rather
than
your DropBox folder.
There is little value in opening the DropBox app in this way and you
will

normally get this message.
This alias
is

like a Windows shortcut and you can for example copy or move it to the

A Google
search on your question revealed

You hit the enter key on the folder you want to rename. This also works for
files. at this point you can start typing and it will replace what is there.
If you want to just change it hit voiceover keys and down arrow to interact
with it and add or remove what you need to. Then hit enter and it should be
 all good.

I’ve encountered this problem as well, and the solution is to use the tab
and spacebar keys, and don’t, repeat, do not use the vo arrow keys to
navigate in the scheduler. At least in the boxes where you check off what
days to schedule, using the vo keys to navigate cause the boxes to
automatically check when you land on them. So, use the tab key and when you
come to a day you want to check, press spacebar on it. Strange I know, but
that’s the deal.

I apologize. I forgot to add something. You hit voiceover keys which are the

As the

Logitech H800 Wireless Headset, First Impressions

2014-03-10 Thread Dane Trethowan
Okay I best get the bad points out of the way first, if you're looking for a
clear sounding headset for Bluetooth chat with your IOS device - and your IOS
device is one which can take advantage of Bluetooth 3.0 and higher - then
forget this headset, as its Bluetooth 2.0 and not as good sounding as some
others on the market particularly when it comes to Voice communications.

Listening to music through the headset is okay but I can't help feeling that -
for the money if its music you want - then you'll be far better served spending
your hard earned cash on something specifically designed for music.

I tried pairing the headset with my iMac using the supplied dongle, whilst
sound through the headset was clear I couldn't get the microphone to work with
Skype and I'm at a loss to know why, the input device is shown in Skype but
there's no level.

The headset is well designed, well laid out controls and even a storage
compartment for the USB dongle when you're not using it.

The design is one of those Fold Away types which allows for easy storage and
transportation.

The battery can be charged whilst you use the Headset and its claimed that you
should get around 6 hours of battery life from the h*00.

There's no doubt that the H800 is light and comfortable to wear.

That is odd,
I mean, if IBM Viavox in Linux, as in Voxin or TtSynth, why can't that

I thought that OSX was enough like Linux that things like this can be made

I prefer Eloquence and Voxin best of all synths I have ever heard.

Again, I have no reason to believe that Dane was in the wrong here. I
truely feel he probably didn't know. And if he found a more direct lihnk
to Wine instead of what's in the readme, then I profusely apologize. This
isn't to single him nor call him out publicly. This message is sent with
very good intent. The only reason I'm doing so is to express my warning
to you all that at least from what I can see, I am willing to stand
corrected, but the file looks harmful. I think the Eloquence port itself
shouldn't be harmful in the least, but just be real real careful where you
get Wine from to make it work!

If you all need a safe, non-infected link, give me a bit and I'll have
something on my web site you all can download. Being it's open source,
it's not like I'm violating any terms by putting it in a more logical
place, not to mention, a safer place.

The readme says the link is hard to find the dmg. Excuse me, but, I found
it on Google very! easily. It only took me maybe 2 or 3 minutes, if that.

So, yeah... I just wanted to give you guys a heads up.

 Chris.

using the track changes feature in osx pages?

2014-03-10 Thread Sarah k Alawami
Hey to all. Hope all are having a good monday. I have a simple question for
y'all.

I learned that track changes are now very much accessible in osx pages, which
is a good thing as I need to turn in a peer review for a case study, and people
will be peer reviewing my stuff for what I need to focus on.

1. How do I use these things
2 will they import when I save their document as word
3 will I be able to export my track changes for the student in question when I
export this document I'm given back to word?

Sorry about all of these questions. I've never in my 25 years of using a
computer used these track changes.

Take care to all and be blessed.

Wine

2014-03-10 Thread Josh Gregory
Hi,
I had wine a while back… And it says it's supposed to make Mac applications of
Windows things, or that was when I had it a while ago.
What is it really meant for?
Is it accessible? I had it a while ago and could never really figure it out.
Thanks.

Re: Um...? New synth for OSX? What am I missing!

2014-03-10 Thread Sarah k Alawami
Maybe nuance, the makers of the whnth do not want it to work for some odd
reason. the quit support the eloquence driver wa back in I believe 2009-2010 so
the probably will not let you make a mac driver tha works truly with voice
over like the acappella or infovox voices. I'm not a coding junkie so I can't
real give any more info then that.

Take care.

 That is odd,

I thought that OSX was enough like Linux that things like this can be made
 to work.
I prefer Eloquence and Voxin best of all synths I have ever heard.

WellI know someone else who did it perfectly, installed wine and followed
 the instructions.

But then again I would not trust this guy, and i mean tylor with anything
as he is known for pulling stuff like this. He codes, but for the bad. Sad
really as he could really do good with his coding knowledge.

I went to the link provided by Dane for the Eloquence port to O S X. I
got the zip file and opened/unzipped it.

In the readme included, there's a somewhat direct link to download Wine
for OSX, which you'll need to make this work. Don't do it! It'll take
you to a download manager you gotta download, and you have to use Windows
to do so, for one thing as it's an e x e file.

Secondly, once you open it, at least on my end, my Nod32 popped up, and
let me tell you something, this isn't at all against nor meant to flame
Dane in any way, as frankly, in Dane's defense, he may not have known, and
may have been clueless of this fact, so ab, suh, lootly! no blame what so
ever! is going to him regarding this. I mean it! None! So don't even?
go there! I think he posted this with extremely good intentions, but just
didn't probably know. My Nod32 popped up though and there were trogen
horses all over! the dang archive! I mean, had I opened the download
manager e x e file, Nod32 told me that there were about 1 gig's worth of
malicious software that would have been infectively installed. In the
longrun, I may have gotten the Wine dmg, but I would have gotten probably
several, if not many viruses in the process.

I've written Gordon about this off list, in greater detail, but we'll just
say, that download manager you'll be directed to is quite harmful to your
Windows system's health. I totally get this list is not for discussing
Windows matters, and normally, I would have refraned, but this could harm
people's computers! I can't just sit back with a straight poker face and
do nothing/say nothing knowing in my mnind that this could infect many
machines. I'm sorry, but I'm not gonna do that to you all. I'm far from
being a moderator of this list, and I don't pretend to play one either,
but this is serious! I just hope and pray I get this message to you all

Re: Wine

2014-03-10 Thread Christopher Gilland
In itself, no. It's not exactly accessible. It lets you run Windows
programs under OSX, or Linux, or whatever.

This is starting to get more Windows related, which we all know is off topic
for this list, and I'm gonna bet Gordon's probably gonna scream at us and
tell us take it off list, knowing him, so, that said, write me off list if
you have any more questions.

Trouble with Siri ever since iOS 6

2014-03-10 Thread Jessica Benzing
More often than not, when I try to get Siri to search the web for something, I
flick through the results and find myself stuck in the part of the screen where
the listen button and battery and clock are. Has anyone else seen this? I
haven't been able to find anyone else who is experienced this problem. I have
been trying for more than a year to fix this and am out of ideas.
