Re: [Mac-access]: Deleting an App from My iPhone 5

2015-01-27 Thread Laurie Mehta
Hi,
You double tap and hold on the app icon on your screen until you hear the sound
that lets you know you are in edit mode. At that point you can double tap on
that app and you'll get a dialogue box that asks if you are sure you want to
delete it. You would double tap on the ok button and the app will then be
deleted.

Hi, Folks.  I need to delete
some apps from my iPhone 5.  I tried to
do it by tapping once, then holding between taps and moving
 right,
but I can't seem to delete the app.  What's the correct
 way to delete
an app?  I'm using iOS 8.1.3.  Thanks in advance.

[Mac-access]: glitch in clearing notifications on iPhone 5S

2015-01-27 Thread Laurie Mehta
Hi,

I'm experiencing a strange glitch in clearing notifications on our iPhone 5S
now that I have updated the OS. The normal procedure for clearing the
notifications is not working for me any more as it had been.

After I updated our iPhone 5S to the most current OS release--
whenever I try to clear notifications from the notification screen (using voice
over) they do not clear.
Double-tapping the confirm clear button does nothing.

It is so strange-- voiceover announces double-tap to clear notifications but
that just doesn't work any more with voiceover turned on under this OS on our
iPhone.

However, a sighted person can clear the notifications, with voice over turned
off.
So it seems to be a problem with how the phone functions with voiceover turned
on.

Previously (before updating) to OS8 I never had any difficulty at all in
clearing old notifications using voice over.

Have any of you had this strange problem using voice over with your iPhone
under this most current version and being unable to clear notifications as
normal?

Do you know of a fix or work around?
or
Is it a known bug that Apple will fix at the next release?

Thanks for your input,

Laurie

FYI: app released for US guide dog handlers

I have not checked out the app yet, but read this on another list and sharing
FYI:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Guide Dog Users Group launches Innovative Mobile App

Tampa, Florida (September 17, 2014): The National
Association of Guide dog Users Inc., a division of the National Federation
of the Blind and the nation's leading service animal advocacy organization,
announced today that it has release the NAGDU Guide Service Dog Advocacy
Information app. This new IOS app provides comprehensive information about
the rights and responsibilities of service animal users under state and
federal law.

Every law in the United States concerning service animals can now be in
your pocket, says Marion Gwizdala, NAGDU's president and a guide dog user
himself. There is no other single source for this type of information.

The NAGDU app provides the entire text of the implementing regulations of
the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) concerning service animals, along
with the relevant laws of each state. It also offers specific guidance for
those industries in which service animal users face the most challenges,
such as restaurants, taxicabs, hotels, and health care facilities. In
addition, those who face discrimination because of their service dog can use
the app to call a special advocate trained to resolve such issues. The app
is provided for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch users  free of charge as a
public service by the National Association of guide dog Users. You can find
the app by going to

Re: Grocery list apps

2014-06-05 Thread Laurie Mehta
There's an app called AnyList that is free.

I've played with it on my son's iphone to test its useability with VO before
installing it myself. I found it to be useable.

He and his wife use it for their shopping lists and they sync their lists so
that one of them can check something off if they have the chance to pick it up
on their way home. That way the other one can see that the particular item is
checked off and does not need to be bought any more.

I recently installed the AnyList app but have not set it up yet for me and my
husband to use. When I have a chance to do that, I'll let you know how hard or
easy set-up was for me using VO.

In the meanwhile, if anyone else has experience with AnyList, setting it up for
two users, and using it, please let us all know.

Thanks :-)

Re: Mail forwarding, Can we avoid the unneeded info?

2014-05-20 Thread Laurie Mehta
With all due respect, this kind of answer (below) is not helpful to the person
who made the original query, or to anyone else for that matter.
If you don't know how to help that person, please don't increase their
frustration by telling them that what is irritating to them is just fine and
dandy because it obviously is not fine and dandy.

Actually, the default should never be to display full envelope information
because 99% of the time people forward messages for other purposes than to
communicate with a system administrator. On the off chance that one wishes to
forward envelope information to a system administrator, one can and should
reserve display of that information for that rare purpose at that particular
time.

Particularly for blind people who generally have to listen to read mail
(forwarded or otherwise) it is particularly bothersome and downright
unacceptable to have to listen through lines and lines of unwanted and
unnecessary ramble in order to simply get to the point of the information that
is being mailed to us.

I do not personally know the list member who originally asked how to get rid of
the envelope ramble but on that person's behalf I had to speak up to ask that
messages such as the one below please not be sent in future because that kind
of dismissiveness and disregard for another person's legitimate questions is
not at all helpful to promote info-sharing.

If anyone on this list does know how to help the person who asked how to change
their mail setting to hide the full envelope information in all forwarded mail,
I hope that that person will please share that information with all of us
because it would b helpful information indeed.

L. Mehta

Re: Screen curtain on iPhone

2014-05-10 Thread Laurie Mehta
Actually, those with vision report that if you turn screen curtain on in a
darkened room you can easily see that there is light still on. Chris's
explanation seems consistent with this observation.

On the other hand, I have had great battery life on my MacBookAir just keeping
the screen brightness and keyboard brightness down to zero when using it on
battery. This can be done by:
turn the screen brightness down by pressing and holding the F1 key (increase
brightness by pressing and holding F2)
and decrease the keyboard backlight to zero by pressing and holding down the F5
key.

To share my own experience, I can use my Air which is several years old now for
about 4 hours on battery.

I have not paid enough attention to my typical battery life on my iPod to make
it worth trying to share that, though.

Laurie

 Chris,
I believe that the screen curtain turns off the back-light,
 thus making it
black, like it is when there is no power to the phone.
There is no black in terms of pixels, there are colored
 pixels that get
back-light, or no light behind them, thus causing
 blackness.

Bryan, I might be wrong on this, so please don't quote me
 here, but if I am
understanding things correctly, I don't think it saves
 battery life, and
 here's why more specifically:

All that really happens notably when you enable the screen
 curtain is that
it virtually paints a black shadening (if that be a word,)
 over the screen.
Think of it like this:  you have a pare of
sunglasses.  Now, if you was to
take those and paint black paint over their lenses, that's
 basically in a
nutshell what you're doing with the screen curtain.
 You're not really per
sé making the screen power/brightness any less
 intense.  You're basically
just drawing solid black highlight over the top of it,
 thus,
 nulling/blacking it out.

If you really want to truely increase your battery life,
 your better bet
would probably be to go into settings, and turn the screen
 brightness all
the way down to 0%.  And no, doing that plus enabling
 the curtain really

Yes, I’ve heard this anecdote from a number of different
 folks over the
years. Unfortunately, AFAIK none of these folks have
 produced any hard
evidence to show that turning the screen curtain on actually
 increases
battery life. I’d love to see a controlled and replicable
 study to either
prove or disprove the assertions of those of us including
 Apple who believe
there’s no difference in battery life with or without
 screen curtain.

 Hi Bill,
You should be able to swipe down with one finger on the
 e-mail. The
first option will be Move, and then if you do the same
 again, it
 should be delete or archive.
Alternatively, you can do a single finger flick up and you
 should hear
 delete/archive straight away.
 Hope this helps!
 Lewis.

noticing an unwanted difference in dictation since upgrading to 7...

2014-01-16 Thread Laurie Mehta
Hi,

Since I upgraded to ios7 for my iPod, I've noticed several things that are
taking some getting used to, but one that is especially unpleasant is that
when texting and using dictate to create a text message
the sound that dings to announce that dictate mode has started has become much,
much quieter than before
and even the repeat back of the text I have dictated is at a very low volume.
My regular volume is set fine via the buttons on the side of the iPod, but it
is odd that the sounds during dictate mode are so much significantly quieter
than the set volume.
This causes some problems in a noisy environment since it's hard for me to hear
that the dictate mode has started.

Do any of you know if there's a way to fix this problem and if so how?

Thanks!

- Laurie

question about strange consequence of iPod update...

2013-12-28 Thread Laurie Mehta
Hi all,
I only recently updated to version 7 for my iPod and after the update, among
the expected changes, I am finding that after I click the lock button and the
voice over voice says that the screen is locked, a few seconds later the voice
repeats screen locked. This seems very strange to me.

Is this happening for any of you as well?

Any thoughts about why it's happening?

Thanks!

major improvement to US currency reading app!

2013-12-16 Thread Laurie Mehta
Hi all,

I just installed this update to the iNote app and it is much, much improved
from the old version!

It's much quicker than before and it offers one the ability to set it to
display a choice of whether the result will be spoken, presented as a tone, or
offered via vibration.

For anyone who uses US currency, I absolutely recommend it. :-)

- Laurie M.

Here is the news release FYI:

Upgraded Currency Reader App Launched by Bureau of Engraving and Printing
A new version of the EyeNote™ mobile device application (app) that
denominates U.S. currency was released by the Department of the Treasury’s
Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) today, replacing the version originally
launched in April 2011. The newer version is easier and quicker to operate
because it uses a continuous scan function to identify the note, rather than
requiring the user to take a picture.
EyeNote™ can be downloaded for free onto many Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod
products. It recognizes all Federal Reserve notes issued since 1996, including
the new $100 note that began circulating in October, and communicates the
denomination back to the user through an audible response (English or Spanish)
or a vibration pulse mode for privacy. EyeNote™ was developed by BEP as an
interim solution to increase accessibility to Federal Reserve notes among blind
and visually impaired individuals while the U.S. government develops a system
of raised tactile features to incorporate into future redesigned notes.
“The recent enhancements made to the EyeNote™ app make it an even more
effective tool to assist people in denominating U.S. currency,” said Treasurer
of the United States Rosie Rios. “It offers portability and speed, both
requirements when used in a retail environment, and the convenience of not
needing to carry around a separate reader by using one’s personal mobile
device.” The EyeNote™ app has more than 14,000 downloads since the 2011 launch.
Users who downloaded the original version of EyeNote™ will automatically
receive notification on their devices that an updated version of the app is
available to download. Others can download the upgraded version for free
through the Apple App Store℠ via iTunes®.
More information about EyeNote™ is available at www.eyenote.gov

adjusting from iPod to iPhone5 with OS7

2013-10-06 Thread Laurie Mehta
Hi, I am used to using an iPod and not using any smart phone, but recently have
been using a new phone and it's an iPhone5 with OS7. I thought it would be
similar to the functions on the iPod but one difference that I found that I
could use a hint on is the search function.

On the iPod a three finger swipe from the first page of apps (or pressing the
button once from that first page) brings up the search feature.

This does not work on iPhone5 on OS7. Maybe it is a difference between a phone
and an iPod or maybe it's the OS version.
Anyway, how does one get the search feature on an iPhone please? (smile)

With too many apps on a phone it is nice to be able to search a keyword.

Also, how does one delete contacts from their contacts list?

Thanks very much for your help!

Hi,

If dictation stops while your using your iPhone, you can resume the dictation
from where you left off by tapping the dictate button again.
I usually listen to what's been noted down before I resume so that I can be
sure that the message flows smoothly.

Re: Help testing the free National Geographic World Atlas on iPad

Hi Esther,
A friend of mine who has an iPad checked this out and here's her comment.

Well you can tell them that the app is useless as far as access goes. Too bad,

 Hi All,

Would someone who is an experienced iPad user be willing to
download and check the National Geographic World Atlas app
that is free today? Here's the background: I bought the
previous version recently when the price dropped to $0.99
and installed it on my iPad, and it works beautifully as far
as accessibility and content goes.  All buttons are
announced, the controls are easily placed so that the button
for selecting locations from a list, Nations
Territories button, is at the top left corner and is the
first element of the screen, and the search text box for
typing in specific searches is in the top right corner. The
descriptive text is all shown in the same pop up window for
the Nations Territories selection, you can easily
navigate to the back button in its top left corner, etc.
This app is also universal binary for use on iPhone and iPad
and the App Store URL is:
 • National Geographic World Atlas by National Geographic
Society (free for a short time)
 https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/national-geographic-world/id364733950?mt=8

So when this showed up as a free app today, I was going to
post it at AppleVis, but decided to check first, because a
number of reviews stated that it seemed like a downgrade
from the  previous version. some of that was because of
the inability to download offline maps, which is not an
issue for me.  However, I checked by downloading the
version to my IPhone 5, and was disappointed with the
accessibility, because you can't get to any of the text
content description.  Well, you can bring this up if
you toggle VO off, then touch the bottom of the screen where
the text name of the country or region you selected is
announced, and flick up.  This brings up a menu with
all the information and buttons that automatically comes up
with the iPad version I have.  (And no, you can't drag
this window up with a double tap and hold pass-through
gesture or anything else I tried on the iPhone with VO still
 on.)

I don't know whether the accessibility issues are the
difference between the iPhone and iPad versions, or just the
latest update, which came out today -- the same day as the
price change. I didn't try downloading the older version on
my iPhone 4, since I was just going to upgrade my phone, and
I don't want to update my beautifully working iPad version
in case there's an accessibility drop in the latest
release.  The download is 203.4 MB in size.

By the way, to add to the confusion, there's an older World
Atlas by National Geographic app expressly for the iPhone
that they've also made free today.  It's accessible and
smaller in size (69.0 MB) but doesn't have the wealth of
additional information that makes the present atlas worth
having. It's more for people who are mainly interested in
maps, and if you want the text content in an iPhone app, I'd
recommend the World Factbook 2013 by jDictionary Mobile
($0.99) instead.  If you do happen to download this
older World Atlas by National Geographic iPhone app, it
will be labeled as World Atlas exactly like the new
universal National Geographic World Atlas app that has the
accessibility issues on the iPhone that I described
above.  Plus, you will get an alert when you start up
the app urging you to get their new Universal app, which is
free for a short period, since they will be discontinuing
 support of the old app.

Thanks, and sorry for the long post.

 Cheers,

 Esther

Re: macbook air 11 inch 2011 model battery life

2013-01-27 Thread Laurie Mehta
Please keep in mind that Mac-Access is an iOS OS X group; Windows
Discussion is strictly off topic and will no longer be tolerated.

Hi,

It is normal for it to use battery even with the lid closed unless you have
actually shut down.

Some tips to save battery during use (at least for a voice over user) are:

Use the function 1 key to lower the screen brightness, even fully off if you
like
2. Use the function 5 key to lower the light that illuminates the keyboard all
the way to nothing

Doing these two little things gives you an amazing amount of extra battery
time!

My machine allows me enough battery to use it on a cross-country flight (across
the US) only letting it hibernate for the little time I might be having a
beverage.

Re: macbook air 11 inch 2011 model battery life

2013-01-27 Thread Laurie Mehta
Please keep in mind that Mac-Access is an iOS OS X group; Windows
Discussion is strictly off topic and will no longer be tolerated.

Hi, Just to let anyone know, in case this might be helpful,

To turn the screen brightness back up to a level that would enable a user with
sight to read it, the key is the function 2 key.

Function 1 turns the brightness of the screen down and function 2 increases the
screen brightness.

And, if you require it, to turn the keyboard illumination up it's function 6.

Function 5 turns the keyboard illumination down while function 6 increases
keyboard illumination.

Also, turning the screen brightness down to zero (dark) does not adversely
impact the screen reader.

  Hi,

It is normal for it to use battery even with the lid
closed unless you have actually shut down.

Some tips to save battery during use (at least for a
 voice over user) are:

Use the function 1 key to lower the screen brightness,
even fully off if you like
  2. Use the function 5 key to lower the light that
illuminates the keyboard all the way to nothing

Doing these two little things gives you an amazing
 amount of extra battery time!

My machine allows me enough battery to use it on a
cross-country flight (across the US) only letting it
hibernate for the little time I might be having a beverage.

question: clicking links in messages

2012-06-02 Thread Laurie Mehta
As I am trying to use Mac mail more and more instead of reverting to doing mail
off of the internet via IE9 in Windows, I find myself a bit frustrated with my
lack of knowledge on how to do certain basic things.

For now, could someone please tell me:

while reading an e-mail message in my Apple Mail on the MacBook,
if there are links presented in a message,
how do I click on one of those links to open whatever page that link points to?

I assume that if I am successful in opening a link,
a new window will open to open that link in Safari, for example.
Then, after reading what I wish to read, I can simply close the Safari window
and go back to the message window to handle the message as desired.

Is this also a correct assumption? :-)

Thanks much!

Re: folder list in the mail app

2012-03-12 Thread Laurie Mehta
In classic mail, I keep my folders listed.
I use just the arrow up and down keys to go up and down through a list of
folders or up and down through a list of messages in a given folder.
Also, if you type the first letter of a folder (or a message title) it will
jump you to the first occurrance of that letter. For example, n for notes.

Now, how to go from folder list to message list or over to favorites list?
Well, I use the VO keys along with the left or right arrow keys. (control,
option, left or right arrow)
This takes me from one column on the page to the other.
For example, suppose I arrow down my folder list to notes and under that to the
iCloud notes folder. Then, I use the control, option, right arrow twice
(because doing it once lands me on a vertical spacer). This brings me over to
the column with the list of notes in it. Then, I use just the arrow keys (in
this case arrow down) to go down the list of my notes to the one I want to
read. Once on the message I want, I use enter (return) to go into it and read
it. I do not use the VO keys for anything else in mail than to move from column
to column, or to read the message header once in a message. Using just the
regular keyboard keys works just fine.

Did you end the first one with a
comma?  WHile it talks in the auto fill, just type
comma and then start typing the next.  If that doesn't
work then you have to find the last letter of the filled
address, highlight it and then re type it and comma, but
typing the comma itself should do it.

In Apple Mail (on a MacBook) how do you add recipients (more than one) in the
to or cc field?

When I try to do this, the first address autofills correctly, but when I try to
add additional addresses this deletes what was entered already.
I have tried using a semicolon or a comma to separate addresses as I would in a
Windows-based program, but this did not work for me in Apple Mail.

I ended up typing each address out including greater than and less than signs
to offset them and separating them with semicolons. This is obviously not a
desirable method. :-)
I want to be able to take advantage of autofill from my contacts.

Thanks for any advice on how to add several recipients into either the to or
the cc fields for mail I'm sending!

Re: back with more questions apple mail

2012-02-05 Thread Laurie Mehta
VO says blank because there is a blank space on the line where the graphic for
unread message would be. This blank means that your message is not an unread
message. If it was an unread message, the line would be read, beginning with
the word unread.

I do not find this to be a problem, personally. To me it means that VO is
reading out all of the information that is available to seeing users. /smile/

voiceover language question, please

2012-02-01 Thread Laurie Mehta
Hi,

Can voiceover read/speak in more than one language, depending on what text it
encounters?

On my MacBook Air, I have set language preferences in the order that I want,
and I have enabled the scripts that I want, but voiceover is not reading in any
language other than English, regardless of text. Apparently, the screen
displays all scripts correctly, it is just that voiceover is not reading
anything other than English.

What I am hoping to achieve is what I have using NVDA in Windows. With NVDA,
the reading can be set to read through text even switching automatically
between languages.

For example, if I have a document written in Hindi using Dev Nagri script, in
which there is also some English text, NVDA will read both the Hindi and the
English smoothly, switching as appropriate between the languages as the text
alternates.

So, can voiceover be multi-lingual? If so, how do I set this up?

Thanks very much!

- Laurie

Re: Apple Mail on a Mac Concerning Message List

2012-01-28 Thread Laurie Mehta
Hi,
Please know that I am very new to using my Mac and mail on it. But, here's what
I am doing to read my mail.

I open the mail program and simply use the arrow keys to move through the
mailboxes (actually, I often use a letter key to skip directly to a mailbox
pressing the letter that is the first letter in that box's name).
I also use just the arrow keys to move up and down the list of messages,
hitting return to open a message.
I use delete to delete a message either before or after opening it.

The only time that I am using the VO keys to navigate within mail is to move
left or right from column to column (from mailbox to the list of messages in
it, for example). In that case, I use VO plus either right or left arrow.

Using this method, I'm able to hear the indication of unread, you replied to
this message, etc. for each message in the list for a mailbox.

I tried out this method inspired by the advice of a friend who suggested that
sometimes using Apple keyboard commands is easier than using specific VO
commands.

I hope that this is helpful, but I look forward to hearing from others who know
more than I do about this. :-)

One thing that I have wondered is if there is a quick way to go from the bottom
of a list of messages back up to the top?

Thanks,
Laurie M. (and, thank you, list owners, for this great list)
