Keyboard and Character Palette options [was Re: Typing special characters]

2009-09-23 Thread Esther

Hi Lindsay,

Simon has answered your question about some Unicode combinations. For
non-English languages, it is possible to deal with the issue of typing
special characters by switching to another input language keyboard.
Alternatively, for accents and more common special characters, using
the Option key in combination with the Control, Command, and Shift
keys give many of the necessary characters. If I need to type special
characters as part of names, I'll use the Option key method to
generate accents:

acute accent - Option-e
grave accent - Option-accent sign (on an Engish input keyboard, this
is the leftmost key below escape and above tab)
circumflex accent - Option-i
diaeresis - Option-u
tilde - Option-n

This group are dead keys. You need to type the accented letter
after the Option+letter combination, so to type an e with an acute
accent you press the Option+e keys, release, and then type the letter
e. If your press Return without typing a letter, you simply get
the accent mark.

Other accents that are closely associated with particular letters are
not dead keys; pressing the two key combination generates the special
character:

German eszett or sharp ess - Option-s
Nordic slashed o - Option-o
C with cedilla - Option-c
oe ligature - Option-q

For other special characters, the Mac provides a tool called the
Character Palette. Although I use this, it is far less convenient
than using modified keyboard inputs, so this was the incentive for
figuring out ways to type common symbols without reverting to the
Character Palette.

What you would have to do to use the Character Palette is to open
TextEdit and go to the Edit menu on the menu bar (VO-M, press E,
and arrow down) and press s p quickly or use your arrow keys to
navigate to the Special Characters menu option. I can describe how
to use this, but I really think there may be better options, because
the problem that I find using the Character Palette is that it's
overkill -- there are too many options to easily use this mode for
regular text entry. You don't just get the main IPA phonetic symbols,
but absolutely every accented variety mingled into the same table that
you have to navigate through. Your best shot is to go through and
figure out the ones you'll really want, and save them as favorites,
but you could just about use your web site and copy the characters
into a personalized text file. (I assume you are going to:

http://ipa.typeit.org/

to Type IPA symbols online.)

A better alternative solution is to look for an input keyboard devised
for IPA entry. I'm not a linguistics major, but my first reaction is
that nobody who wanted to work efficiently with phonetic character
input on a Mac would use the Character Palette on a regular basis. So
I ran a Google search on Mac IPA keyboard, and sure enough there
are pages that encode special IPA keyboards for the Mac. There are
software tools that allow you to customize and add keyboards to your
Mac. Then you can switch keyboards just as though you were switching
to a different input language keyboard on your menu bar, and even
define a shortcut sequence to use your alternate keyboard.

Here's a page called IPA SIL keyboards for Mac OS X:

http://scripts.sil.org/cms/SCRIPTs/page.php?site_id=nrsiitem_id=ipa-sil_keyboard

I would take a look at this web page and the top level home page for
links on using IPA fonts, and then try installing this keyboard.
(Apparently, documentation on how to install the keyboard is included
with the download files).

There's also a site called: Using IPA fonts with Mac OS X: The
Comprehensive Guide

http://linguisticmystic.com/2007/03/08/using-ipa-fonts-with-mac-os-x-the-comprehensive-guide/

that came up as the second item on my Google Search. This looks like
a good starting point for general information on using IPA fonts on
the Mac, where you can go to get them (including the first linked
site), how you install things, etc.

Finally, as another alternative, you can try using TeX (through the
TeXShop software interface), as Justin suggested. This word processor
will certainly handle any special characters you throw at it -- it is
multi-lingual, multi-platform, and accessible on the Mac, and
linguistics folks are one of the groups that end up using this to
handle the special characters. The main drawback is that there's a
steep learning curve. Unless you're working in a field where this
commonly used and perhaps even required for publishing professional
papers, it's hard to get started and find answers for your special
uses. Most fields will have specialized style files and packages that
make using TeX simple for people using similar templates. What's hard
is starting from scratch with no local expertise to draw upon. The
installation and setup of the software isn't hard.

HTH.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: audio books in mp3 format?

2009-09-23 Thread Esther

Hi,

To have your mp3 audiobook show up under audiobooks instead of music,
select all tracks and use Get Info (Command-I) to edit. iTunes will
ask whether you really want to edit multiple tracks. Just press return
to indicate that you do. In the Multple Item information window, VO-
Right arrow to the Options tab and press (VO-Space). Then navigate
(VO-Right arrow) to the pop up button for Media Kind and change this
from Music to Audiobook (VO-Space and use your arrow keys). Next,
navigate (VO-Right arrow) to the pop up button for Remember Position
and change this from No to Yes. This will remember your place in
the track. Finally, navigate (VO-Right arrow) to the pop up button
for Skip when shuffling and change this from No to Yes. This will
omit your audiobook tracks from random shuffle play. Press return (or
navigate to the OK button and press it with VO-Space) to commit your
changes.

The tracks should vanish from the Music library and reappear under
Audiobooks. Finally, make up a smart playlist to play your book. I'm
assuming that your mp3 files are tagged to identify the book in the
album title and that the individual tracks are also tagged and
ordered. Either find the Make Smart Playlist menu option from the
File menu on the iTunes menu bar or use the shortcut, Command-Option-
N. Navigate (VO-Right arrow) to the rules section and interact (VO-
Shift-Down Arrow). You're going to create two rules:
Album contains Name of your book
Play count is 0
Press (VO-Space) the first pop up button and change it from Artist
to Album (by arrowing up or by quickly typing the first few letters
of the keyword). VO-Right arrow past the contains pop up button to
the text field and type in the album name. (You can change the pop up
button for contains to is if you want an exact match, but either
should work). At the end of the first rule, VO-Right arrow to the
Add button and press it (VO-Space). Then VO-Right arrow to the next
rule. Change the pop up button to Play Count. The remaining
arguments should read is 0. Stop interacting with the rules section
and VO-Right arrow to make sure that Live Updating is checked (which
it should be by default), then either press return to commit your
changes or VO-Right arrow to the OK button and press it with VO-
Space. Then type in a name for your smart playlist.

Play your audio book from your smart playlist. As each track is
played, it's play count will increment to 1, and the live updating
feature will cause it to drop off the smart playlist, so that the next
unplayed track is always at the top of the playlist. Since iTunes
remembers the position within your current track, your current
position is always bookmarked. If you want to reset your play count
to 0, just select all tracks and use the contextual menu in the songs
table to Reset Play Count and you can reuse your smart playlist.

HTH

Cheers,

Esther

•select your book under Music in iTunes

sending this in response to in touch program

2009-09-23 Thread william lomas
Hi I am sending the below message to the IN Touch bbc
radio 4 program

I feel that the comments made regarding the IPhone on the 22nd of
September were totally unfounded and unreasonable. The Iphone, like
the Macintosh computer from Apple is not something one can try for an
hour and say oh I don't like it. LIke anything it takes time.
Admittedly yes, texting has become a problem for some but again
practice makes perfect, but to slate the product in such a way as to
say the product is not worth it and a load of rubbish is to me,
unfounded.
I have used the IPhone and think it puts us on a level playing field
with our sighted counterparts for once.
There are a lot of blind iphone users who I am sure would agree with
these listed sentements, one can't get a feel for the new IPHone in a
day or so it takes time, practice, and effort and I for one feel Apple
should be commended for what they have done.

Re: audio books in mp3 format?

2009-09-23 Thread Jessi and Goldina

thanks, Esther!!! you sure know your stuff! this is great!!
On 2009-09-23, at 1:38 AM, Esther wrote:

 HTH

 Cheers,

 Esther

RE: Voice Over for Snow Leopard

2009-09-23 Thread Michael Busboom
As usual, Esther, your feedback is so helpful.

I am a member of the Technical Commission of the European Blind Union, and I
wanted to use the manual to help me prepare for a session in which I will be
discussing Voice Over in detail.

I will look at the URL you provided. It would be great if there were a source
for “in-depth” documentation as well. Had the documentation for Voice Over
been more readily available, we might have perhaps avoided disasterous and
erroneous product reviews like the one produced by The Braille Monitor. I, for
one, enjoy reading a manual from cover to cover before ever even starting to
use a product or program.

My very best to you, and thank you for this link!

I should also mention that a number of people received a copy of the

HI Will,

The Songs table that shows songs in the iTunes store is part of the
HTML content now rather than separate, but the one you access to
listen to music in the music library is still there. have you rebooted
since installing the update? Before I rebooted, I had a lot of trouble
with focus issues when moving around in the Songs table, but that
problem resolved itself after the reboot. Unfortunately, the focus
issues in the column browser were not resolved by a reboot.

next table command useful navigation tool

2009-09-23 Thread Woody Anna Dresner

Hi,

You guys may already know this, but I didn't, and it's cool. I
discovered a couple of days ago that the command to move to the next
table, VO-Command-T, works in lots of programs, not just Safari, this
can be invaluable for navigation. for instance, in itunes it takes you
directly to the Sources table or the Songs table. In Mail, if you
conduct a search with Command-Option-F, it takes you right to the
search results table. IN Skype, it takes you to the table listing
contacts. In the spell check, it takes you from the misspelled word
right to the list of suggestions. In short, I think this is going to
be one of my most used navigation tools.

Best,
Anna

Re: sending this in response to in touch program

2009-09-23 Thread Maxwell Ivey Jr.
Just my two cents, I receive emails from many sighted people that say
sent from their iphone at the bottom of the message. You wouldn't
believe the number of typos and missing letters that I get. Same with
the blackberry. there are some sighted people who can't use the
iphone or other such phones effectively. My brother, who is sighted,
turned on the vo features on his iphone just to see. He was impressed
by how easy it is to use even for someone not used to accessing
technology through speech. So, by all means i hope they listen.
their previous track record suggests they are more concerned with
protecting turf or pushing their own agenda than they are in giving an
honest appraisal of the iphone or any new technology for that matter.
Thanks, Max

VO curser suddenly skipping over one edit box on Facebook

2009-09-23 Thread Israel

Hi everyone!

I am a new member to this group. In fact, I just received my
confirmation this morning. I've already learned a few tips and tricks
by reading the emails I've received. I am looking forward to so much
more especially since I just converted in June 2009 to Apple Mac from
Windows and the third party screen reader worlds.

I am running Leopard but have decided to purchase Snow Leopard later
today. I am wondering if anyone else uses Facebook and whether you
have run into a problem which I started having a week ago Monday.
With a few exceptions, most items seem to be labeled properly on FB
and I can navigate the site and my friends' walls, but suddenly, VO
skips over the control edit box where I would normally type my status
update. VO also skips the edit box used to post on a friend's wall.
VO recognizes and takes me to all other edit boxes such as search,
write something or share button A sighted friend said the site
looks the same. The what's on your mind edit box is still there but
he noticed VO curser gets to the link just before it and on the next
press, it skips it completely to the share button Arrowing up,
down, left, or right, VO curser always skips it. I can access every
other edit box except that one. Again, I've been on FB for five
months and this is the first time this has happened.

Any ideas?

Israel Antonio

by reading the emails I've received.

Another query about scripting VO

2009-09-23 Thread James Nash
Hi everyone,

I think I remember reading somewhere that it was possible to create
your own Services in 10.6. Is this true or did I imagine it? Also,
does anyone know if there are any limitations to scripting VO or is it
just limited by the scripter's imagination?

Thanks

In the autofill tab, you can edit autofills for all the different
forms. If you edit the Other forms, it brings up a window of
addresses, in which you can delete individual ones or clear them all.
hope that helps.

hey David,
to open folders on the dock:
make sure you're on the folder you want to open
press command option shift m all at the same time to bring up the
contextual menu
arrow down to where it says open or you can probably just press the
letter o
press command option space
the folder should then open. then you can interact with the list and
view the contents.

hope that helps. my skype name is canadian_diva if you wanna add me.

Re: Another query about scripting VO

2009-09-23 Thread Yuma Antoine Decaux

Hi,

For the first question i can't be sure, but there are commands to get
into processes.

As for the limitations of applescript, since there is a large library
of commands, and this being object oriented, you can display or list
various objects within objects, their elements and properties. So if
you choose and reflect on what you want the script to do, it shouldn't
be a problem to do just about anything. You might want though to check
for third party libraries for various applications not made by Apple.

Hope that helps

best

Yuma

Re: load of rubbish!

2009-09-23 Thread Yuma Antoine Decaux

Makes you realize that lobbying goes a long way to put forth
technologies created by government funded or associative companies to
favor their products. It can also have to do with certain agreements
made between insurance companies and those bulkware providers. Its all
a business at the end of the day, and worse yet, it is a lucrative one
in poor countries whether for political or contract attaining reasons.

I've never attended a show on accessibility technologies but if
someone gives me this load of crap, i won't go away without some
verbiage in favor of alternative solutions to all these obsolete
feeling accessories like those i found at the royal institute for the
blind. It felt like a museum doing a garage sale.

nano thoughts

2009-09-23 Thread Yuma Antoine Decaux

Hi everyone,

I got home yesterday and decided to fully test the nano, and i'm quite
pleased by the experience, apart from the fear of loosing this thing
when i wear slacks or office pants.

I included the bruno infovox voice as my nano navigator, and funny
enough, i played a few song from the French singer Goerges Brassens,
and bruno sounds exactly the same :)
Otherwise, the shuffle option is quite fantastic, very responsive.

I've also noticed that there some sort of touch sensitive area on the
screen? Can anyone confirm that? Or maybe the turnwheel has got ESP
because when i do as much as hovering a finger it triggers bruno's
description of the song.

Oh, and also. If you use a different language, there are two voices
depending on the need, that read your titles. Found that an additional
perk.

Lastly, can anyone suggest a nice case for this beauty? i'm looking
for something that will give it some bulk but not with acrylic plastic
which would defeat the whole framework experience.

best

Yuma

Re: twitter for the mac, what will work with vo?

2009-09-23 Thread Cara Quinn

Hi Maurice, two clients that work well are Twitterrific and Syrinx.
Twitterrific is a smaller / lighter client (very fast to use) and you
can get it from:

http://iconfactory.com/software/twitterrific

Syrinx is quite a bit more feature-rich and you can get it from:

http://www.mrrsoftware.com/MRRSoftware/Syrinx.html

Both work very well with VO. Each has a couple of quirks but
nothing that should really interfere with your usual daily use or make
it less enjoyable.

Smiles,

Cara :)

Two small mail and VO questions

2009-09-23 Thread Frank Ventura

Hi all, I have two really simple but frustrating issues with the Mail
program in SL that I cannot figure out with VO. Firstly, when I arrow up
and down in my list of messages the unread ones start with saying
unread and the read ones start with saying blank. How can I stop the
read messages from saying blank before each one? Also, how can I
change the sort order of my messages in that list. Right now the newest
is at the bottom I would like the newest at the top.
Thanks
Frank
