2010-06-15 Thread Olivia Norman
Thanks so much! I've repaired permissions and installed the update. Haven't
done anything drastic like wipe my whole disk, but I might resort to that if it
really does resolve these issues. How do I go about restoring from the time
machine backup?
Will go to my iPad and use the Apple store app there.

Hi Everyone,
I'm looking at the Q and A's that someone sent earlier today (Thank you,
who ever sent these! :) I have a few more questions, as all of the
material I've seen works on the assumption that people are using
windows.
1. How do you formatt the stream's card? The material discusses various
folders to copy certain kinds of files into. So, how do I take a blank
SD card and make it work with the stream's folders using a mac?
2. Can I copy music files and put them on the same SD card as talking
books?
3. I'm assuming that the SD card would simply show up in the finder and
content can just be coppied between devices that way.
I'm still considering whether or not to drop the money on the stream, or
if I would simply be fine with my iPod, iPad, etc, as they work better
with a mac. I would welcome people's thoughts and opinions!
Thanks!

Wow Cara! What a major hassle. Sounds like Windows. Think I'll wait for
somebody else who is more adventurous than I am to try all that, and if it
works for them, then I'll try to do it. I can't figure out time machine
restores either, so I'd have to get sighted help for restoration of my system,
which is faithfully backed up on a frequent basis. With so many of us having
these problems, though, it does not seem like its an individual system thing.

Resolving strange Safari / OS issues -was- Re: can't order my iPhone because of VO bug

2010-06-15 Thread Cara Quinn
Ah, I should have clarified a bit on my last step. My sincere apologies.

In order to wipe your drive and perform a fresh install of the latest combo
update, you'll need to have your Snow Leopard disc from which to boot. Once you
do this, and the install program begins, choose your language, and then you can
access disc utility from within the install app by going to the menu bar with
VO in the usual way. You can then locate the tools menu. In this menu you
should find disc utility as an option.

Bringing this up will allow you to erase the disc you'd like to install on
to, so you'll be able to start fresh with a clean install of snow Leopard.

Once you have it installed, you can then install the combo update and
finally, restore your system from the time machine backup you made.

It's a bit of work, but it can resolve all manner of issues.

Smiles,

CQ :)
---My previous message follows---
Hey Olivia, I notice others have replied to you with the suggestion of the
Apple Store app. this is what I would have suggested as well. did it work?

NOw a couple of more suggestions about your and others' general issues.

• have you repaired permissions? -Just a little black magic to throw into the
mix. :)

• have you downloaded / installed the combo update of 10.6.4? Sometimes this
can help with strange issues.

• Lastly, you might consider backing everything up to a time machine backup,
wiping your drive, installing the 10.6.4 combo update and then letting your new
system be restored from your time machine backup.

Admittedly this last step is a bit annoying but it can work wonders! :)

Hope this helps and have a great night!…

Re: some more questions about streams and macs

2010-06-15 Thread Dan Roy
Right, but, most people who live in the US are eligible for the free NLS player
which does the job nicely. the only down side to that free player is that it's
quite large. This was done intentionally to facilitate people who have various
physical disabilities as well as those who are elderly and not used to small
devices. However, the speaker on the NLS player as well as the battery life
are wonderful. if I would have had this player when I bought my stream, I
wouldn't have bothered.

Now, that its not fully compatible with the MAc, I don't think I would even
recommend it. there are much better ways of playing audio than a victor stream.

Hi everyone. Since I updated to Safari 5 I can't get voiceover to read
everything in the list view when I'm downloading like it use to with Safari 4.
Is there a way to change it so that it reads everything? Like how much time is
left and everything without interacting with the list twice. I hope that makes
sense.

I've never had VO read messages automatically, but I was automatically focused
into the text area and then I could 2 finger flick down to read or VO+A. Not
now. I have to navigate to text.

How To Get VoiceOver To Read Mail Messages Automatically

2010-06-15 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I just updated to 10.6.4. Why-o-why did I do this?

Until this update, when I pressed the [Enter] key on a message item in my
Apple Mail Inbox, VoiceOver would automatically begin reading the content of
the message; that is to say that data located in the Scroll area. It was
pure bliss.

Since the update, however, VoiceOver reads the message header info and then
promptly stops. Forcing me to use a command to begin reading.

Please tell me this is a configurable setting in VoiceOver. (Smile)

Also, keep in mind that I do not use the preview pane; that is to say, the
horizontal splitter is parked at the bottom of the Apple Mail Window.

All suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Mark

Focus 40 Blue Display Again

2010-06-15 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi all,

Everything seems to be going well with the new Snow Leopard update. However, I
just ordered a Focus 40 Blue Braille display, and then realized it wasn't
supported. I'm hoping the focus 40 drivers for USB will suffice, or, barring
that, there will be support in the near future. Anyone know if there's
specific support for the Focus 40 Blue in this new Os x release?

Thanks,
Teresa

2010-06-15 Thread David McLean
Do you have an audible account? I've noticed that just going to audible
doesn't seem to cause it necessarily. If you have an account and it tries to
sign you in automatically it crashes. Also it sometimes will go to the site
but when you start to navigate through it it will crash.
Oddly if you do a google search for audible and go to the site that way it
works.

Re: safari 5 bug not fixed with new os release

2010-06-15 Thread Barry Hadder
Well, I just tried the apple support page that I was having problems with and
it worked fine twice in a row. This is starting to get really tricky.

On the Audible page, I've done the fallowing:

When vo restarts itself, shut it down.
 reload the page.
After a few seconds (4 or so) start vo.

I assume it will work the same in other situations.

This is the only thing that has worked for me every time.

Re: safari 5 bug not fixed with new os release

2010-06-15 Thread Olivia Norman
I can't even get the Apple start page to load now that I've upgraded to 10.6.4
it just constantly relaunchwes VO. How does turning VO on and Off resolve the
problem? I just get the same message of "voiceover on". At what point do you
turn VO off and back on?
This is certainly frustrating. To me, it's more frustrating than the audible
site, Apple is a site I use often and must navigate successfully.

Iphone language and ringtone question

2010-06-15 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi all,

I have been playing around with my Iphone for a few days and have discovered
that i hate the standard ringtones that come with it. I tried to create my own,
but with no success. I'm not talking about pirating any music, just songs that
I have legitimately purchased or downloaded via legal means. I can't figure out
how to get the files in to M4r format. I tried using Fision, but haven't found
it accessible. Can anyone help? Also is there a way to change the voice on the
Iphone? There doesn't seem to be an international option on it that I can see
under settings or general. Am I missing something? Thanks again for any
assistance. Have a great day.

RE: vinux 3.0 on bootcamp

2010-06-15 Thread Bryan Smart
Actually, Larry, it runs better in VMware. In VMware, you have a virtualized
set of hardware that is visible to the guest, and VMware Tools includes Linux
drivers for the virtualized hardware. Under BootCamp, though, Apple doesn't
provide drivers for anything other than Windows. Linux has support for lots of
Mac hardware, but some devices won't work. I think that wireless on the new MBP
models falls in to this category. I'm sure that someone out there has hacked up
a fix, so you can probably get it working, but will require quite a bit of
extra effort.

Don't forget to manually add the option to the VMX file to reduce the buffer
size of the virtualized audio device, or else the latency between a key press
and speech will be fairly long.

pciSound.playBuffer = "16"

16 works fine on my MBP, but you might need to adjust. With 16, speech in
virtual machines seems just as snappy as physical machines. Lower than 16,
though, and I get crackling. So, if your speech is choppy after this tweak, up
it a bit.

BTW: You must completely close a VM, change the vmx file, and then restart it.
Editing while the VM is active won't change the live setting, and your changes
can be overwritten when the VM closes.

I wish that they'd allow people to adjust the size of the record buffer. All
audio going in to a VM is on about a 1 second delay. Makes it difficult to use
VoIP applications.

Bryan

How are you getting the volume level up where you can hear it. I always have to
go to Ubuntu's System Settings and raise the volume there. It is fine until I
reboot where it returns to such a low level that it is very difficult to hear.
I suspect this should work under Boot Camp just as well if not better.

Safari 5 and Headers

2010-06-15 Thread Linda Adams
Hi folks,

I am using Quick Nav on my Macbook with Snow Leopard. I noticed today
that as I browsed a web site using headers, sometimes I could use the
right arrow to read the content under the header and sometimes I had to
stop interacting with the header in order to read the content. Has
anyone else noticed this and is Safari 5 probably causing it? I've
never had to stop interacting with a header previously.

TIA
Linda

to use the iCal widget, which will provide you the info your interested in. I

To better understand the rotor gesture, imagine that you create a
miniature, 1 inch analog clock every time you use this gesture. You
create this clock by placing your fingers on the trackpad by doing the
 following:
 1. Simultaneously touch the trackpad with your index finger where the
12 o’clock point would be on an analog clock, and about 1 inch below,
your thumb where the 6 o’clock point would be.
 2. Then, at the same time, slide your index finger to the 3 o’clock
point and your thumb into the 9 o’clock point clockwise and then
release your fingers from the trackpad, this will toggle and select
the options which are available by the rotor gesture.
 3. Repeat step 1 and 2 until you here the available rotor gesture you
 want.

Hello; I don't have an iphone and probably won't anytime soon because

REPLY FROM MARK:
Hello Chris,

I wanted to reply to you some time ago but commitments prevented me
from

doing so until now. I am so far behind on this list that it's almost
laughable. While I'm sure someone has answered this question, I
wanted to

chime in on this one.

1.
Like you, I have/had my primary iTunes Library on a windows PC.
Like you, I
needed to change my primary sync source from the Windows version of
iTunes

to the Mac version of iTunes.

I am sure you have researched this on the web and have found a
plethora of

information some of which contradicts itself.

Here are some things that one may try but will probably be more
trouble than

it's worth.

1.
Using a home local area network, try to point the Mac version of
iTunes to
the same .itl file as the Windows version of iTunes uses. This
would appear
to work except that your media paths will not be valid given the
different

file structure of the 2 operating systems.

2.
Copy the Windows iTunes library to a new location. This will not
work if

your source files reside outside the original library.

3.
Use a third-party application to accomplish your goal. Frankly, I
prefer to
use as few third-party applications as necessary in accomplishing
tasks.

4.
Backup your iTunes media to DVDs and then restore to the Mac. This
will
work unless you have tons of media in which case it's going to take
a mighty

long time.

Yesterday, I accomplished the same goal of changing my primary sync
source
from my Windows PC to my Mac. Next week, I will, once again, use my
windows
PC as my primary sync source complete with any new apps or media
that may

have been acquired on the Mac.

If done correctly, one can accomplish this with only a few steps and
with
complete confidence that all of the contents of the iPhone will be
the same

after syncing to the Mac.

OK, how did I do this? Oh! One more thing, I accomplished this using
VoiceOver only. I did not use my residual vision in any way.

Chris, while I have a home local area network, this is not necessary
in

order to accomplish this tasks. That is to say, if you don't have a
wireless network with network attached storage, (recommended) you can
accomplish the same tasks by setting up an ad-hoc network. Once
done, you
may terminate the ad-hoc network without fear of damaging or losing
any

data.

To begin, you much turn on Home Sharing on each computer. This
requires

that both computers be authorized under the same account in the iTunes
store. Enabling sharing in the preferences tab will only allow you
to play
media from a remote computer, not import it into a different
Library. This

is a crucial point to note, OK?

Once you have enabled Home Sharing, you will see the contents of
everything
in the first computer's library. All that is necessary is to simply
select
it and choose the Import button then let the computers do the work.
This
will work for all apps and media. The only thing it does not work
for is

photos but that is an easy thing to transfer via conventional methods.

I know this has been a long reply but I hope it sheds some light on
moving
data from one iTunes Library to another, regardless of the operating
system.

I have deliberately kept my reply general for how one implements the
general

technique described above may vary.

I wish you all the best.

Mark

I am not a audible subscriber. Can you burn the audible to a CD disk?
If you can then rip the CD to mp3. Just a thought.

I think it's a good idea for us to contact Humanware and Audible to
ask how to activate the Stream using a Mac. We all know it can't be
done yet, but both companies are more likely to put a wiggle in it
if they get lots of inquiries, rather than one or two. I've been an
Audible subscriber for about six years. My experience has been that
audible tends to respond sooner rather than later. If they notice
lots of inquiries about something, they start tracking the number
of inquiries on the subject and are more likely to respond if the
numbers are up.

Re: Audible books, can I listen to them/transfer them?

2010-06-15 Thread Ana G
Of course, you can listen to Audible content on the Mac in iTunes, on your
iPod, and most likely on your iPhone, etc. I can't swear on a stack of
bibles, but I'm pretty sure all Apple devices are Audible ready. You can
always subscribe to audible, listen on your Apple product, and when you find
a friend with Windows, activate your Stream.

I think it's a good idea for us to contact Humanware and Audible to ask how
to activate the Stream using a Mac. We all know it can't be done yet, but
both companies are more likely to put a wiggle in it if they get lots of
inquiries, rather than one or two. I've been an Audible subscriber for about
six years. My experience has been that audible tends to respond sooner
rather than later. If they notice lots of inquiries about something, they
start tracking the number of inquiries on the subject and are more likely to
respond if the numbers are up.

Re: Confusion with multilingual Macs

2010-06-15 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Michael,

You need to go to the AssistiveWare site:
www.assistiveware.com
That is where you buy the German voices. You should also consider getting
GhostReader at the same time for an extra €10 or whatever it is in dollars.

Ghostreader is great for reading documents, and it allows you to jump forward
and backward by paragraph. It will also run in the background while you work on
another document. I use it this way when translating. I have GhostReader
reading the original while I create the translation in a Pages document.

Make sure you buy the full versions of the voices since GhostReader is also
sold with versions that don't work with VoiceOver.

Cheers,

Anne

Confusion with multilingual Macs

2010-06-15 Thread Michael Busboom

Hello everyone,

I have received so much help from this list and in all honesty, I had
hoped that after a year of owning a Mac, I'd be giving more than
taking. I am enjoying my Mac and gaining more proficiency with it all
the time, using it for the majority of my private things and integrating
it into my work environment whenever possible.

I recently accepted a job position in which I will be required to write
in German extensively, something which I have thus far not done with the
Mac. I need some assistance making my Mac speak German, and I have some
specific questions for anyone who can help after I supply some
background information.

While at Sight City in May, I received a demo version of some fantastic
German software. I believe that it was Infovox German. The German TTS
also came bundled with an English voice as well. Unfortunately, for
several reasons, the 30-day trial period expired before I had the
opportunity to buy the software. When I tried to launch the German some
45 days after installing it, all I was told was that my trial period had
expired. However, I was not given the name of the software, nor was I
provided a link where I could go and purchase and install the unlocked
version.

A kind friend who wanted to assist me helped me find some German TTS's
on an Acapella site but after making the purchase and going to the
download link, it turned out that, although the TTS was a German voice
named Sarah, this was a windows software package. The company refunded
my money.

I would very much like and need to unlock the software that is on my Mac
because it works with Voice Over, and it really is quite good.

Below is some of the correspondence I received from the company, but it
still leaves me unclear as to precisely what I need to order to have
Voice Over speaking German on my Mac.

Kindest regards and if anyone can offer some assistance, please read on.

However, I

I need the German voice in order to use Voice Over, the built-in screen
reading software
that comes with every Mac Book. It not only has to work in one specific

Doesn't photo booth do that, just click video and there you go.
I think you can save or convert that video in to something burnable.

actually try tis.

1. imagine a radio nob or any nob or dial, or even a click wheel.

2. place your thumb and finger horizontal on the screen as if you are holding

Re: explaining the rotor gesture in writting, any suggestions?

2010-06-15 Thread clarence griffin
And I just figured out another way to do it. Take 1 finger and place it on the
track pad, then take another finger on the same hand and kind of swipe it up or
down next to that finger. All this while holding down your voice over keys.
Control+Option.
Let me know how that works for you guys.

Can't Find TrackPad Commander

2010-06-15 Thread L. T. Reed
I want to try using gestures so I attempted to turn on this feature with VO+
two fingers clockwise but no good. Then I looked in VoiceOver Utility under
Commanders and find I only have two commanders - NumPad and Keyboard. What
should I do?

I'm using a MacBook that has a touch pad and running Mac OS 10.6.3.

Regards,

Ted.

explaining the rotor gesture in writting, any suggestions?

2010-06-15 Thread Alfredo
I am tring to find a good way to explain he rotor gesture through
wrtting. Do you think this is good enough. What would you change, if
anything? Do you guys understand it. Do you guys know what an analog
clock is? Any feedback is appreciated.

3. Repeat step 1 and 2 until you here the available rotor gesture you
want.

Re: vinux 3.0 on bootcamp

2010-06-15 Thread Larry Skutchan
How are you getting the volume level up where you can hear it. I always have to
go to Ubuntu's System Settings and raise the volume there. It is fine until I
reboot where it returns to such a low level that it is very difficult to hear.
I suspect this should work under Boot Camp just as well if not better.

2010-06-15 Thread Scott Howell
I have seen this and I am not sure of a solution. I speculate it is an issue
with the imap connection and I may be wrong, but if imap, you are seeing this
with Gmail then.

Transferring One iTunes Library To Another, Regardless of the Operating System

2010-06-15 Thread M. Taylor
Chris Wrote:
OK, thanks all for your help on opening applications. I was hoping that I
would be able to hook up my iphone to the mac and have it synchronize to the
mac, but apparently this doesn't work because it doesn't sync to that
library. Is there a way to tell it to forget about the p.c. and transfer
all the content to the mac or must I try to transfer the stuff from the p.c.
over to the mac and then sync? What a pain.

REPLY FROM MARK:
Hello Chris,

I wanted to reply to you some time ago but commitments prevented me from
doing so until now. I am so far behind on this list that it's almost
laughable. While I'm sure someone has answered this question, I wanted to
chime in on this one.

1.
Like you, I have/had my primary iTunes Library on a windows PC. Like you, I
needed to change my primary sync source from the Windows version of iTunes
to the Mac version of iTunes.

I am sure you have researched this on the web and have found a plethora of
information some of which contradicts itself.

Here are some things that one may try but will probably be more trouble than
it's worth.

1.
Using a home local area network, try to point the Mac version of iTunes to
the same .itl file as the Windows version of iTunes uses. This would appear
to work except that your media paths will not be valid given the different
file structure of the 2 operating systems.

2.
Copy the Windows iTunes library to a new location. This will not work if
your source files reside outside the original library.

3.
Use a third-party application to accomplish your goal. Frankly, I prefer to
use as few third-party applications as necessary in accomplishing tasks.

4.
Backup your iTunes media to DVDs and then restore to the Mac. This will
work unless you have tons of media in which case it's going to take a mighty
long time.

Yesterday, I accomplished the same goal of changing my primary sync source
from my Windows PC to my Mac. Next week, I will, once again, use my windows
PC as my primary sync source complete with any new apps or media that may
have been acquired on the Mac.

If done correctly, one can accomplish this with only a few steps and with
complete confidence that all of the contents of the iPhone will be the same
after syncing to the Mac.

OK, how did I do this? Oh! One more thing, I accomplished this using
VoiceOver only. I did not use my residual vision in any way.

Chris, while I have a home local area network, this is not necessary in
order to accomplish this tasks. That is to say, if you don't have a
wireless network with network attached storage, (recommended) you can
accomplish the same tasks by setting up an ad-hoc network. Once done, you
may terminate the ad-hoc network without fear of damaging or losing any
data.

To begin, you much turn on Home Sharing on each computer. This requires
that both computers be authorized under the same account in the iTunes
store. Enabling sharing in the preferences tab will only allow you to play
media from a remote computer, not import it into a different Library. This
is a crucial point to note, OK?

Once you have enabled Home Sharing, you will see the contents of everything
in the first computer's library. All that is necessary is to simply select
it and choose the Import button then let the computers do the work. This
will work for all apps and media. The only thing it does not work for is
photos but that is an easy thing to transfer via conventional methods.

I know this has been a long reply but I hope it sheds some light on moving
data from one iTunes Library to another, regardless of the operating system.

I have deliberately kept my reply general for how one implements the general
technique described above may vary.

I wish you all the best.

Mark

RE: some more questions about streams and macs

2010-06-15 Thread Simon Fogarty
I have both an IPod touch and a victor stream, and I use both.
I find the stream great at night because of it's sleep timer. I can set it
and it turns off if I've fallen asleep.

My Ipod doesn't or at least I haven't found the function to allow it to auto
switch off.

The only problem I really have with the victor stream, is that it at least
mine which is about a year old, is limited to 16gig sd card storage. So my
Ipod has more storage capacity. But the stream plays more book formats than
the Ipod. Each has it's good and bad points.
