Re: new user

2011-09-28 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Banu,
When I first got my mac, the problem I had, was that, when moving from windows
to mac, I didn't have a clue on the simplest tasks. It seemed a hell of a job
to find out every little thing yourself. Like: how do I open a folder on the
mac? Well, you get an answer to this if you ask for it, but as a new mac user,
it's easy to get lost, because what do you do next if you pressed the keys and
you have your folder open? This was the same feeling in all areas. I felt like
a complete idiot, though several parts of me were missing. Lol.

My advice. If you are new to the mac this list is where you can get started.
There are a lot of intelligent and patient people here, and now that I have
overcome the beginner issues, I found I can now answer some of other people's
questions myself. Every new mac user starts out like you do now, and for me,
that was hard at first. But don't worry. The mac is a breeze to work on, and
soon enough you will likely say the same thing.

The first thing to do, which was very helpful for me personally, is go through
the voiceover quick start tutorial, control option command f8,to learn how
voiceover works. You wrote that voiceover does not talk everywhere. Once you
understand how to work with things on the screen, like buttons, sliders, menus
and such, and you know that the voiceover cursor is an imaginary small window
that you move across the screen, to hear what is there, you will get the hang
of it. The voiceover tutorial will help you get started in reading the screen.

Second, I learned a lot by browsing the mac help. When you start your mac, you
land at the desktop. The program that makes the desktop appear, and that
controls it, is called the finder. Finder on the mac is what my computer, or
windows explorer, used to be on windows. From finder, so, from the desktop, you
can open help and browse it. At the top of your desktop, and at the top of
almost all programs, is a menu bar, running from left to right across the
screen. Press control option m, m as in menu, to get to the menu bar. Then, use
right arrow to move across it, till you find the word help. To open the help
menu, now move down with down arrow. You will find something that reads: help
center. Press vo spacebar on it to open the help center. Now, read the screen,
just as you learned in the voiceover tutorial, and you will find all sorts of
self study information.

A third good resource is to press control option h. If you do, the voiceover
help menu will open. Choose: online help, from this menu. This will give you
another page full of subjects you can read.

If you have any difficulty trying these things, please write back, and others
and I will help. But, don't be overwhelmed. The mac is a forrest full of little
diamonds, and there is no single book or website to tell you where they all
are. You don't need to know everything. Start with what you need, and begin
with simple things.

For example, don't ask us how to use the finder. That is too big of a question.
Finder can do many useful things, but you don't need them at once. Once you are
at your desktop, ask yourself a little question, just for today. Which program
can I use to browse the web. The answer is safari. How can I start it? The
answer is in the resources above. Try to run a program, and see how far you
get. If you're stuck, try the program's own help and you will learn. If you get
lost, ask here.
Be patient. It will come to you, but it takes time and effort. Or another
question: now that I can read help, how do I shut down my mac? How do I know my
battery status, if you have a laptop? Is it easy to email from a mac? If you
start out with that type of questions, you will get easy answers. But none the
less. It can happen that you don't understaand what you are doing. But just do
what people answer you, and the big picture will drop into place later on.

I stuffed away my mac, after one month of trouble, because I had the feeling
that the mac world was too big, and I didn't know where to go first. I took it
out a few months later, and bit by bit, things started happening. You have
people to ask. Good luck.
Talk later.
Paul.

Re: just discovered computer braille

2011-09-28 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Gigi,
Yes that's what I would like to do. American computer braille is what I am used
to, even though I am in Europe. But yes, I'd like to omit the control
characters for quicker reading, or I would like to have a good way to learn
them, so I don't see things I don't understand. Is there an overview somewhere,
where you can see what each character is in braille? Like: greater than: dots
3, 4, 5.

taking out the control characters? If so, I would rather be able to turn them
on and off, but right now I'm just glad I can do it at all. My PacMate
display is starting to give me some trouble, although it's still usable. If
it costs too much money to fix it, I just may need to use my other display on
the Mac. At least I won't have to install Windows just for that now.

If you choose English and uncontracted braille and then turn on dots 7 and
eight, you get computeer braille, complete with control characters. This
means you can get a braille display of new lines, tabs, etc. I can't even
do that on my PacMate these days, although I could on my old Braille Lite

Re: Downloading folders from dropbox website

Yes, selecting the advanced setup provides you with a few more options ... one

come with the package out of the box :).

If you want to send a link to share with someone you could:

1. focus upon the file or folder you wish to share.

2. Perform a VO + Shift + M keystroke to bring up the menu.

3. Arrow down until you here the dropbox option.

4. Press the right arrow key and then arrow down until you here copy public

5. Press enter.

Now you can paste the link into an email and send it to whomever you like and

Dedicated devices and iOS was RE: Money reader in canadian app store

2011-09-28 Thread Aman Singer
Hi, all.
I, like Erik, carry around a dedicated MP3 player, but see the merit
of both that approach and the use of the iPhone. My views may be summed up
as whatever works best. Having said that, there are a few things in Erik's
message below which aren't disadvantages of the iOS method.
When asked about whether the dedicated player can
Purchase music and download it wirelessly?
Erik writes
No I have to handle music and podcasts on computer before they go to the
player, but I refuse to invest in a DRM and so apple store mp3's and audible
books are no interest to me.

Music from the Apple store has, to the best of my knowledge, no DRM
at all or very minimal DRM. One certainly does not have to authorize devices
for it. Books from the Apple Store and from Audible do have DRM, however.
This is the main reason I don't buy books from the Apple store or Audible
content. If I buy something in accordance with a specific license agreement,
it's mine to use in accordance with that license. The fact that the provider
of the content thinks people will violate the license really isn't my
problem.
Erik, when asked about online streaming of radio stations, says
This is a feature I could actually use if my player had it. Unfortunately
wifi access is still pretty limited here and there's no way even if I had a
data plan, that I could afford to put my ISP to the kind of usage I'd be
looking at. My mp3 player listening time is about 80 to 120 hours a month
and if even 20 or 30 were using streaming audio I'd shortly run into
problems.

I used to be of this opinion as well. However, listening to a 256 K
stream for an hour takes about 113 megabytes. Most radio stations stream in
a lesser quality than that. Given that most providers in Canada at least
offer something around 5-6 gigabytes for $30, streaming radio stations for a
significant amount of time is not impossible to do.
Finally, Erik writes
I'd appreciate some links to resources on how to play ogg or flac on IOS if
you have them.

There are several options. You may want to have a look at
http://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/oplayer/id344784375?mt=8
for example. There are other apps, both official and from Cydia,
which will do the same. I don't read audio books very much, but agree with
Erik that the iPhone's handling of those books is quite bad.

No, but it does allow you more control over the layout of your music when

gota be kidding me.

This is of course scratching the surface, and some of what you
mentioned, mp3 audio books, ogg and flac, the iPhone will do.

Fraid not. If I put an mp3 audiobook onto my ITouch it goes into my music
and then I have to playlist it separately at the very least. Plus I can't
have bookmarking in an mp3 audiobook. If I want that I have to make it an
m4B or whatever that proprietary format is. I'd appreciate some links to
resources on how to play ogg or flac on IOS if you have them. I can make it
work on the mac, but not on the ITouch.

Re: just discovered computer braille

2011-09-28 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Paul E.
I had this information originally in an, I think an old VersaBraille manual or
maybe the old Braille Lite manual. I do have on my computer a file from BANA
which is called Computer Braille. There are some things in there like dots 456
twice for underline which don't apply to computer displays. However, most of
what's in there applies. When I have some time, I'll edit this file and send it
to you. There probably is a better file found I'll bet in the manuals for
braille displays. You might check yours and see if there is a listing in there
of computer braille code symbols.

Most of the other symbols that you are talking about include control M for
carriage return, control L for page break, control I for tab, and control J for
form feed. You probably won't see, in a braille file, most of the other control
characters.

Gigi

them, so I don't see things I don't understand. Is there an overview

them on and off, but right now I'm just glad I can do it at all. My PacMate
display is starting to give me some trouble, although it's still usable. If
it costs too much money to fix it, I just may need to use my other display
on the Mac.

 2. How can I get to the menu with search options, that some of you are

etc? Does quicknav need to be on or off in this particular case? I got the
advice to hit down arrow after typing my search term, and sometimes it brings
up a menu, but you can never tell before hand, what this menu is going to
contain. In my case, sometimes only a people, menu entry, and I suppose that
lets you look for message from someone specific. But I then see no other
options. I once got the menu to show a subjects item. But the entire exact
search thing is still unclear to me. I'd love to get it working though.

Numbers Question

2011-09-28 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Guys.
I just had an experience with Numbers I haven't yet figured out. I think I know
how problem started, but I meed to know how to get VoiceOver to tell me the
cell status.

I finally called my sighted husband who used to teach Excel for Brookhaven
College. It turned out that some of my cells were listed as labels or text. I
had suspected this might be the problem because I had checked numbers and added
them up on my PacMate calculato, and they were wrong. I had set VoiceOver to
tell attributes, and I had gone into the Inspector and, I thought, changed the
whole selected cells to numbers. How can I get VoiceOver to tell me the status
of a cell so that I can be sure that all the numbers are included in the sum? I
hope this makes sense.

The other question I have is what the command is for going to the end of the
file in Numbers. I have a MBP.

Regards,
Gigi

As a college student and an employee where professors, students, and

empowering, and equalizing that I am able to use it as well with a
consistent and unified experience on Mac OS X and other platforms. For

However, Google has changed all of this. With Chrome, ChromeVox, Docs,

 1. When you start to use chrome, which is just another browser, like

Voiceover will work with Chrome, but the very same issues that occurs

key being inconsistent, moving among various HTML elements will
require several attempts, and many other issues.
 2. If you can, what does the chromevox extension give you on top of it?
 If
you can not use chrome with voiceover, does chrome plus chromevox then
 give
you equal performance than safari does, when visiting other websites? In
other words, would you say that chrome is a good replacement for safari?
ChromeVox is an extension that has very deep integration with Chrome,
removes several layers of abstractions, and allows for things to be

web browser extension. All the issues I detailed with Safari/VoiceOver
 do not exist in Chrome/ChromeVox.
 3. When using google docs, is it true that many people can work on a

Yes, all of this is possible with Docs, is accessible, and it's
possible to use other real-time features, such as chat to discuss
various points with others who you are collaborating with, several can
make changes, and it's possible to review/edit all these changes as
they're occurring. Inserting, viewing, and editing comments are also

Re: language rotter

2011-09-28 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hi,

I don't think there is a language router in vo. You just change the voice to an
other one that speeks a different language.
Press option, control command left or right arrow to cycle through vo settings
like rate, intonation, etc. until you reach voice. Then arrow up and down
keeping those 3 keys pressed and select the voice you want.
If the voice you want is not there you Go to the vo utility with option
control f8 I think. There choose voices and customize. Add the voice you want.
I just had my first mac for 1 week so I might have mossed some steps in the
adding voices part but hope this helps you further.
Like others have said the vo quick start guide is really helpful. I find that
vo command help is great too.

Keep up your hope in this fun adventure!

Converting a bunch of audio files?

2011-09-28 Thread Traci
Hi all,

I've downloaded Doug's ringtone script for iTunes, and it works great for my
mp3 ringtones. Does anyone know if I can convert multiple files at once with
his script?

If not, does anyone know of a program that will let me do this?

I have a ton of mp3 ringtones, which I'll eventually want to convert to the m4r
for the upcoming iPhone. It would be nice if I could convert a handfull at a
time.

Thank you,
Traci

Apple Care Protection

2011-09-28 Thread Traci
Hi all,

I'm curious who has the Apple Care Protection plan and if you recommend it?

I have a $100 gift card for the Apple store, so if I can use toward the Plan,
that'll drop the price to $149.

I'm kind of feeling like it is worth it. This is such an expensive machine, so
why not give it some protection for the next 3 years.

I get the one year limited warranty, so I guess I'm paying for the editional 2
years. $75 each year? Lol, good math?

I'd still like your input though. Good idea, or nah, not really necessary?

Thanks,
Traci

Re: Hey, where did the downloads window go in safari?

Hey Matt.
The reason it's like that is because Apple wanted to make Lion look more like
IOS and have the downloads move from a window to a popover does that. It's like
that all of the time on the iPad when you open menus.

Re: Apple Care Protection

2011-09-28 Thread Traci
Hi, here is the link on Apple's website detailing the Apple Care Plan.
http://www.apple.com/support/products/mac.html

If I understand it correctly, you get phone tech support for the 3 years, plus
repair service on parts and labor. Either bring the Mac into a Apple Store, or
for the Macbook's, you can use an Apple Care box to ship it back and forth.

wirelessly? Have access to 15,000 internet radio streams? Provide you with

Stopping iTunes from automatically adding files was:Ripping cps with Amadeus?

2011-09-28 Thread Eric Caron
Paul and others who wanted to find a way to stop iTunes from automatically
adding a played audio track. Below is a message Esther sent that gives
excellent directions on how to deal with this. Thanks to her I now have iTunes
working the way I like.

here is Esther's excellent directions:

Hi Eric,

You can play tracks without adding them to your iTunes library if you QuickLook
them by pressing space bar instead of opening them in an app. This obviously
does not work for DRM protected apps, since iTunes is required to validate the
DRM (e.g. with audiobooks purchased from Audible or the iTunes Store, movies,
really old iTunes Music tracks that were purchased before they moved to
DRM-free purchases, etc.) Other than that, you can set the default app to open
mp3 files, for example, to be something other than iTunes (e.g., VLC, QuickTime
Player, etc.). Just select an mp3 track, and use Command-I to bring up the
Get Info window. Use item chooser (VO-I) to navigate to the Open with
option: specifically VO-Right arrow to the pop up button for the application,
VO-Space, then select the app you want other than iTunes (e.g. QuickTime Player
or VLC).If you then VO-Right arrow past the pop up, there's an option to
Use this application to open all documents like this on
e. followed by a Change All button that you can press (VO-Space) before
closing the get info window with Command-W.

I think that as long as iTunes is the default app for opening a file, it adds
the new entries to its library. Just QuickLook the file instead of opening it
if you don't want it to be added to iTunes.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Thanks, Eric. I guess we'll have to ask Esther if she can help by reposting
this message. I was really bothered that I had to go through my entire music
library removing random mp3 files that weren't supposed to be there.
The problem is most of my music is mp3 files that I brought into iTunes a few
years ago. I don't think that iTunes converted them all to mp4 files. I just
don't want it to add anything unless I specifically ask it to.

solution. Maybe someone can remember and share the method.

I thought I would let you know as that might be a easier solution to your
 needs.

Thanks. Can Amadeus rip tracks from a cd and create mp3 files?
I'm concerned about doing this with iTunes as every time I open an mp3 with
iTunes, it thinks it should add it to my music library so that I then have
to go in and remove them.
Very odd since I never saw this behavior in windows.
If Amadeus can't rip mp3 files from a cd, what would I use other than
 iTunes?
As an example: I have the bar code reader from AT guys. There is a cd with
 a tutorial.
If I rip the tracks from the cd or even open the resulting mp3 file with
iTunes, it's going to add that mp3 to my music library for some reason.
So, I want to create an mp3 file off of the cd so I can then transfer that
to my book sense for listening.
Can Amadeus rip those tracks from the cd; or do I need to look for some
 other program?

On Sep 10, 2011, at 1:54 PM, Tom Frank wrote:

 Hi there,
Yes it does, and it does it very well. After trying to use ITunes with no
success, I broke down and actually read the Amadeus manual. It's around
page 52 where it explains how to convert tapes and records to CD.

First, place and name markers where you want different tracks. Don't
forget to put a marker at the very beginning of the file.
Then, if it's a two track stereo recording, go the sounds menu and flatten
 the file.
Then go back to the sounds menu and Burn the file to a CD. The option is
almost at the bottom of the Sounds menue. Amadeus can automatically put a
two second blank spot before every track.

Also, the recommendation is that you do all of your editing in the Amadeus
format which is true CD quality.

 Happy recording.

Hi. Will Amadeus also rip cds as well as everything else it does?
I'm beginning to think that I don't want to do this through iTunes as it
appears to add everything opened with it to the library and I wouldn't
want a bunch of audio tutorials or books added to my library unless I
specifically decided to put it there.
 Thanks.

  Hi,

I don't think there is a language router in vo. You just change the voice to
an other one that speeks a different language.
Press option, control command left or right arrow to cycle through vo
settings like rate, intonation, etc. until you reach voice. Then arrow up and
down keeping those 3 keys pressed and select the voice you want.

I can't be sure, but the pro has some fun converters (volume and temperature, I
believe). It's quite accessible, too. I'm a horror fan, so I love the sound
effects. Fun app. :) I figured, why not pay a couple dollars more for something
fun and useful?

I haven't tried the pro one since the free one does what I need.

Hi. Is the pro version of howler as accessible as the free one? It costs
 $1.99.
 Thanks.

If you are the one that sent the script, the message did come through.
After I asked about the countdown timer, I found a free one in the Mac App
store called Howler. It couldn't be any easier to use.
 Thank you anyways.

I'm wondering, since I haven't heard about it or seen it cross the list,
if my huge post regarding a countdown timer and its instructions ever made
it through, or whether it was filtered out or something?
