Re: speakable objects… very cool!
Hi Alex and Others, Okay, I went to System Preferences, Accessibility and found the Speakable Items option. I checked the 6 options that were available. I then managed to access the Listening Key and tried a variety of key combinations, but settled on F10 since others seem to be having success with that key. Now, how do I get these commands to work? I restarted my system, and when pressing F10, I hear an error tone I thought I could say "what time is it" anywhere when the system is running? What am I missing? face time on mountain lion?
Okay, so I get a face time call, and in the past on lion, when I got a face time call, it would ring on both my iPhone 4s, and iMac. This time it only range on my phone, even though it says I am signed in on my iMac. Also, when I go to try and make a face time call on my iMac, it shows me the contact list, when I select the one I want it doesn't show me no contact info, so I can select there @me address or phone number for face time. Re: what's the story with Menu Tab for Facebook?
Hi Alex, I don't know why it's not working for you but it works for me. When I press my designated hotkey for it to open, which is control+F, I can see pretty much everything on my Facebook. I even have Growl configured to tell me if there's a new notification. Perhaps you might want to set up a hotkey to open it yourself. Although, I would be interested in finding out if there's a better program than this, I would like to be able to have news feeds from friends and companies that I've liked automatically read out to me. Re: speakable objects… very cool!
Hi Alex, as Esther said in another thread, Speakable Items isn't new to the Mac. I was fooling around on Youtube and I saw the same thing she was talking about because I wanted to know if I could get Siri's functionality on the Mac. So I tried it after the video for a few weeks when I had Lion and, well, I wasn't too impressed with it because it completely ignored my energy saver settings and prevented my screen from dimming. This was when I had it set to listen for a key word. Now that Mountain Lion is here, for the people that have at least light perception on this list, does your screen dim after you speak a command? Hi All, In a message in which I have already made the message body interactive vo space bar is not opening a link. Voice over is saying URL detected but won't open. The same thing is happening for attachments i am trying to open. Instead of the link or attachment opening I am getting a read button and a few other choices of buttons. Wow, this is really cool! I had tried to work with speakable items in Lion, but had had no luck. So I was pretty pessimistic when this thread started. But they really do work much better in Mountain Lion. This is very cool! Once again the Mac solution way outshines using Dragon with Windows. Very Disappointed with Mountain Lion
Been reading all these posts the last few days about how amazed everyone is with Mountain Lion, and not sure what all the amazement iss about. It only took three days as I just had to use the Force Quit for Safari, and all it took was actually trying to login to my Yahoo Fantasy Baseball Page. I pulled it up and first the first time ever got a cookie message that said my safari cookie had expired, after I got out of that window safari did nothing but Busy Busy Busy for the better part of ten minutes before I went to force quit. I already had been very unimpressed with Mountain Lion between the VO space bar not properly selecting items I clicked on to the features being very blah Seriously dictation is useless for anyone who knows how to type. The notification center is useless especially if you keep Night Owl open like I do to Tweet, and Imessage, I'm sorry but I fail to see the point as most of us have our Iphone sitting right next to us. I hate to be so negative, but considering how many people were bashing Lion which didn't have that many problems, I fail to see where the significant upgrade is. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. really neat discovery with chess
Hi all, I just made a really neat discovery in the chess app. I don't know if speakable objects needs to be on or not, but I can speak moves! So, once I configured it how I wanted (having the system listen all the time for a keyword instead of using the press-and-hold method), I could do this: me: "Alex, pawn a2 to a4" mac: "pawn a2 to a4" mac: pawn b7 to b5" and so on. No keyboard needed at all. Again, I don't know if you need speakable objects on or not, as there is a "listen for spoken moves" checkbox in the chess preferences, but I have it on and it responds to my keyword. BTW, I chose "alex" not out of vanity but because my default voice is Alex, so it made sense and feels more natural than "computer". Anyway, in case someone else hadn't discovered this and likes chess, now you know: you can play a game all by voice! Now we just need more games like this... Re: Not great with computers but since upgrading to mountain lion…
My understanding is that it lets you hit the fast search key with another key. Vo then jumps to the first control with that letter, letting you quickly search for controls starting with a particular letter. Re: speakable objects… very cool!
Did you restart? That is also helping out it seems. The front window thing is not necessary, it's just nice so you can, for instance, speak the name of a button and have that button activated. For instance, as I type this, a "send" button is somewhere in the dialog. I could just hold down f10 (or whatever key I chose for speakable objects) and say "send" and it would do it. You can find this in the dictation and speech item of system preferences. Go there, select "speakable objects" from the table, vo-right to the three tabs, activate the commands tab, then find the next table. Here you can use the checkboxes in the first column to turn on or off the items in the second. I just turned everything on, but you can turn on and off whatever you like. Actually, the first time I did it, I have not a clue what I was doing. I had heard that pressing the FN key twice made it work. So, without knowing anything about anything, I pressed it twice and it put me into the setup window. Re: speakable objects… very cool!
Hi guys Does anybody know why it makes a difference if you reassigned your key to F10 as some people have done already? I haven't done that, and I seem to be having a problem at times. What is the reason for reassigning it? Also if you have a MacBook Pro, can you use the F10 key by itself without the FN key? Re: speakable objects… very cool!
Once they re on, and provided speakable objects is on in the accessibility dialog, things should work. Once you select this from the table, select the settings tab, then vo-right to the two radio buttons and make sure the "on" one is checked. As I said, I followed some suggestions and re-assigned my talk key (second tab), then restarted my mac. Everything is working fine now. An issue with the Apple store web site
Hi all. I'm having an issue when viewing content on the apple store website. I'm looking at MacBook Air configurations, but the only mottle who's specs are showing is the 11 inch. How do I change it so that the 13 inch Air is showing in place of or at the same time as the specs for the 11 inch? I'm using Mountain Lion and Safari 6 if that helps. Re: dictation success!
These are commands you can give, like "what time is it" or "open iPhoto". You can even select buttons shown in the currently open dialog just by speaking them. If you are at all familiar with Windows speech recognition, it's like dictation is the text input part of that and speakable objects is the other part that accepts commands for system operations. You're right, I'm really sorry for the misinformation. I keep getting the speakable objects and dictation mixed up. Of course, it's dictation and speech, not accessibility. Re: when reading, double beep cuts off speech?
it's cutting the tweets off because it's being minimized. Press cmd+option+H to hide others, and then go to the zoom button on the client and press it. You should be all set then. the zoom button is to the left of the toolbar. HTH, rachel On Jul 30, 2012, at 2:34 PM, ROD SKENE wrote: > I'm not sure what it is but may have a work around. Re: dictation success!
Well, you going to dictation and speech. That's off the system preferences window. Then, you turn the dictation on by pressing the radio button. A dialogue will come up explaining what dictation is and a little bit about how to use it. Then, if you want to use the default key, you just use the FN key twice to start dictating when you get in to a text area. Your Mac wil ping at you to let you know it's listening. When done, just press FN once and you will be pinged at again to let you know it's not listening. Is there a way to make voiceover not lower in pitch when entering a search field, or consequently, when encountering a data detector and raising it's pitch? Re: dictation success!
I followed the suggestion of another lister, and it works perfectly. First, enable speakable items, obviously. Second, re-assign the dictation key (I use f10, as was suggested, but I imagine any valid key would work). Third, restart your mac. All should be working now. I don't know what will happen the next time I restart, but for the moment it is all going perfectly. speakable objects… very cool!
Hi all, I, too, set my speakable objects key to f10, restarted the mac, and now it is working. Here's what I discovered so far: "switch to [app name]" will switch you to an app, provided that app is already running. "open [app name]" will open an app not already open, including third-party apps you install, not just the ones the mac comes with. "what time is it" will speak the current time. "what's today's date" will speak the date "quit this application" will close the currently focused app; "hide this application" does the same but minimizes it There are more commands which you can get to by saying "show me what to say". Interact with the table, then interact with the item you want. VO-right to the "collapsed" item and vo-space on it to expand, then stop interacting and move right until you get to the commands list. If nothing else, I love the time and app focusing commands. navigating and selecting in the status / option bar in ml
Hello, About the new statusbar in ml, I was greatly surprised that we could work with the icons of third party apps like dropbox and skype. However, there seems some other things that are changed there: It happens on some icons that I can't dubbel tab on it. When I do this, I receive the message: the keyboardfocus can't be placed on the window. The strange thing is that it mostly works with vo+space on it but a double tab on the trackpad should be a equivalent to vo+space? Could this be a bug? Also, I become sometimes a bit confused about the ordering of the items in the menu. Is it simply the one next to the other or is there a kind of columns? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Blackboard Question
Hi Alex, Actually, I have tried arrowing. Here's the weird thing. I can tab around to most fields and they are read. The tab key does not respond when I go into this particular frame. We have not looked at Blackboard preferences and we will do that tomorrow. Thanks for all of the assistance here. Re: Can't eject a cd from external superdrive
Dear Esther, I do want to thank you for your valuable hints. I wasn't aware of the command+shift+c combination to reveal all the devices. Try as I did, I couldn't reveal the super drive attached. In the preferences of the finder menu I have checked to display all the volumes, external disks, servers, etc. But for some reason they do not always show in my finder. I will make sure I have saved your suggestions for later, should I have come across similar problems in the future. There's so much to learn from all of you. I do thank you. Hi Harry, Well, on this networked system, I could not access VO Utilities with VO F8. I wonder if their setup is the major issue here, as it's odd that I cannot configure VO yet. Les, I successfully use VO with Safari and Blackboard all of the time. It is a good idea to change the settings to "Text only," or "Plain text," I'm not sure how it words it. Re: Question about correcting dictation
I would love to know this as well. This same feature is available on IOS as well but as far as I can tell we VO user can't get access to it. I wonder if this limits us from being able to substantially improve the reliability of the dictation. I mean if we aren''t using the built in the built in correction tool, does dictation have another mechanism for learning our personal voice. Re: setting up Speakable Items
Hi Gigi, Speakable items is a very old topic on this list -- this feature works on the PowerPC platform, too, and there are some old discussions about playing Chess on the Mac with Speakable Items turned on. This feature is turned on in System Preferences > Speech under the Speech Recognition tab. You can turn on the Speakable Items radio button, and select your input source (usually the internal microphone by default). I usually use the default escape key as the listening key, and set this to listen only when the escape key is pressed. I think there's a Cult of the Mac YouTube video, "Use Speakable Items to Bring Siri's Functionality to Your Mac". You could just do a search in the YouTube app on your iOS device for "speakable items" to bring this up. Most of the other document pages on Speakable Items date from eight or nine years ago. You can give commands like "What time is it?" "Get my mail" "Empty the trash" "Show me what to say?". If you use window chooser menu (VO-F2 twice), you can find a "Speech Feedback" window and navigate there. The menu button has an "Open Speech Commands" option, but you can also do this by saying "Open Speech Commands window". I'm running Lion, so I don't know whether this has changed in Mountain Lion. Hi Alex, I think we tried interacting with the frame, and still could not read the text. I should mention that when I tabbed over and highlighted the text in the frame, VO did not inform me of any text, so this is why I'm figuring we have a problem. Re: still busy busy busy in lion
Hi, A few things that you can try on your TC. the first generation one, I believe, does not have Dual Bandwidth capabilities so we'll work around that. • Go to the Finder. • Press cmd-shift-u to open the Utilities folder. • Open Airport Utility. • Select your TC from the Network Group. • Press the Edit button. • Enter your TC password, hopefully you have one set. Now that you're in the configuration for the Time Capsule, let's do a few tweaks. 1. In the Wireless pane. • Make sure you have some sort of security set, preferably WPA or WPA2. This will ensure that no-one else is borrowing bandwidth from you and slowing down your connection. • In the Wireless Options button, if the channel is set to Automatic, to 8 or 9. • I'm pretty sure that in that version of the TC, there is an option to help with interference. If your BaseStation is anywhere near a wireless phone basestation, it can sometimes cause interference and slow down your connection. Check that option if you can locate it. Otherwise, if possible,, it is desirable to move the basestations away from each other. If there were any errors announced when you started up Airport Utility, let me know and I'll assist in fixing them for you. HTH. Later.. Re: Can't eject a cd from external superdrive
Hello Andrew, Doesn't your superdrive show up in Finder if you use the Command-shift-c shortcut to view all devices attached to your Computer? (I can't test this because I don't have the external superdrive myself). Also, you may be able to adjust your Finder preferences about what is displayed -- use Command-comma from Finder and explore the options under the general tab and sidebar. And in a pinch, you can always use the Command-shift-g "go to folder" shortcut for Finder and type into the text field "/Volumes" without the quotation marks and press return. (That's slash followed by "Volumes"). HTH. Cheers, Esther On Jul 30, 2012, at 8:10 AM, Andrew Lamanche wrote: > Thanks, Alex for such a swift reply. Re: RSS in ML?
You can still read RSS within mail and you can get a Safari extension to put the RSS button back onto the toolbar. Re: reading Bookshare with Safari was a disaster
I've read bookshare books in Safari since installing ML, and haven't had a problem. To be perfectly honest, though, I take what I guess is the lazy way out -- I essentially note a page or phrase and then search for it when I reopen later. I've never tried using webspots, bookmarks, or anything like that. Re: Can't eject a cd from external superdrive
Thanks, Alex for such a swift reply. The desperate thing was though that the disk was not showing in the finder anywhere and I wasn't able to perform the eject command. I have just done a mad search on the internet, and initially it seemed from other people's experience that nothing else would do but a hammer. And then suddenly somebody posted a solution: I went to disk utility and found the super drive in the table of volumes and under file menu, I found the eject option. It worked!!! I am so relieved. I've only recently spent £70 on the super drive. Thanks, Alex, and to all the others too. Andrew On 30 Jul 2012, at 18:56, Alex Hall wrote: > Plug it back in, then go to /volumes in finder. RE: RSS in ML?
RSS feeds are no longer available in Mountain Lion. You'll need another RSS reader. -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Mike Busboom Sent: Monday, July 30, 2012 1:00 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: RSS in ML? Hello everyone, I recently installed Mountain Lion and, for the most part, things are great. I am having one issue, however, and that is with Mail's RSS facility. I have been subscribed to several RSS feeds for a long time, and I have always read them in the Mail program. Under ML, however, those mailboxes are no longer visible in my list of mailboxes.
