Re: Opening Google Search Results in New Tabs in Safari

2012-10-11 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi Nic,

same happens here. The only solution I can think of is to set Google settings
to open results in a new window.

Unfortunately it's hard to find in Safari but it's possible. My results open in
a new window as standard now.

All the best

For some time now I've had problems opening links in the Google search
results page in new tabs in Safari.

When I do a Google search,, each result shows up with its own heading which
is also a link. I can navigate to each heading and VO-Space (or up and down
arrows together with Quick Nav) to open the link. However, if I press
command-return on them, which I usually do to open links in a new tab,
 nothing happens.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me, please?

 Thank you.

siriusxm

2012-10-11 Thread Pam Francis
Hi folks,
In a previous thread, someone was asking about the accessibility
to the siriusxm site.
I have until recently subscribed for several years. I finally gave it up
largely to its inaccessibility.
When Sirius XM were separate entities, their respective sites were somewhat
usable. However, since the merger, the flash all of the pretties for the
sighted community's benefit told me they no longer wanted my money nor my
patronage. Their ipad App is half usable. Last I knew, their iphone app was
still crap.
I realize we as visually impaired consumers can not stomp our feet throw
tantrums; however, if a service takes our money as a subscription
as does siriusxm, or services like it, we deserve a means to facilitate our
business along side our sighted counterparts.
As a general rule their customer service is outsourced
to other parts of the world. Seldom did I find anyone who would help me take
care of anything supposedly accessible on the site. I wish those luck who try.
I have found plenty of accessible content on the web that more than makes up
for the inadequacies of siriusxm.

Re: siriusxm

2012-10-11 Thread Scott Davert
Hi Pam. You're 100% correct. You can get most of the content in
similar flavors on the web, so there is really no point to subscribing
unless you're looking for sports coverage. There are ways around this
too, though some of them aren't for the less technically oriented, and
probably shouldn't be discussed on list as it's a sort of gray area. I
have tried tu sign up for a subscription a few times, since I wanted
the online only option, but couldn't seem to do so through their
website. I'm certainly not the most advanced screen reader user, but I
consider myself well above average when it comes to navigating the web
with either Safari, Firefox, or Internet Explorer. When I contacted
their customer service people on 3 different occasions, I had such a
difficult time understanding them and they had trouble understanding
me, that I resorted to sending the company emails. Sadly, my questions
were never answered. So they lose out on a customer who would have
paid for the programming because of some specific content, which I'll
have to get elsewhere. It's pretty pathetic when they don't even make
it easy to take your money...

Re: how to copy music from one library to another?

2012-10-11 Thread Alex Hall
Okay, I have done that. I now see an import button on my mini, but neither
space nor vo-space does anything. I have selected the 12 songs I want, and
moving to the music table even says rows 1 to 12 of 12 selected, so I know
the selection is good. Home sharing is enabled on both minis. That said, it
seems to have worked, as I have four copies of what I think is the correct
album (there was no id3 info on the cd). So, is importing silent? That's
annoying, but at least it worked.

   Hi,

It looks like your using iTunes Sharing to see the Libraries on each

use is Home Sharing. Home Sharing works between multiple machines on the
same network as long as they use the same Apple ID. You turn on Home Sharing
under the Advanced menu on the menubar. It must be turned on in both
machines. Once Home Sharing is on for both machines, you should be able to
navigate to the other machine, select the items you wish to transfer, Stop
Interacting with the Table, then navigate right to the Import button.

Simply Bizarre Mail Client Problem, Help Requested

2012-10-11 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

OK, I've been working on this for what seems like forever and cannot find a
resolution.

For some reason, I cannot see messages sent to myself in my mail client. I
want to be clear on this so please indulge me.

I have several accounts or Mailboxes setup on my Mac including an iCloud
account, a Candleshore account and my primary UCLA account.

Now, when in either of the two other Inboxes, I can send an email to that
address and it appears in the inbox. For example,

1.
Place focus on the Candleshore Inbox.

2.
Read a few messages waiting for me in there.

3.
Create a new message and address it to the candleshore email address which
is music...@candleshore.com

4.
Confirm that the messages is being sent from that same address.

5.
Enter a subject line.

6.
Send the message.

Within a second or two, the message appears in the Messages table, just as
it should.

This works for each of my accounts accept for the UCLA account.

I have removed the UCLA account several times and re-created it but the
problem persist.

I first noticed this when posting to this list. Even though all of you
could see it I could not. Then, I decided to CC myself on outgoing messages
but still, I did not receive a copy of the message.

As far as I know, this problem did not begin until the latest version of the
mail client.

I just don't know what else to try.

By the way, I have even gone so far as to use various SMTP servers but
nothing works.

The funny thing is, when viewing the UCLA account from my Windows computer,
the messages sent from my Mac, that is to myself, do not appear, either.

Somehow the Mac is doing something to prevent the messages from being sent
to me but only in this one account.

Any suggestions will be welcomed.

Totally Perplexed,

Mark

RE: A Weird Problem With Mail Since The Latest Update

2012-10-11 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Clifton,

Actually, through a weird twist of fate, my UCLA account does, indeed, use
gMail.

However, keep in mind that when I send a message to myself from MS Outlook,
I receive it with no delay or problem. The problem appears to come from
the Mac Mail client.

Stranger still, I have a direct gMail account setup on both the Mac and
Windows and there is no problem sending or copying messages to myself from
that account, either.

I just don't get it.

Mark

When I press command option B to open bookmarks in Safari, I right arrow oand

until I turn voice over off an back on again. After doing this, the bookmarks
are then listed in the bookmark window. This happens every single time I open
the bookmarks list. Does anyone know why this is happening and what can be done
to fix it? It didn’t used to do this but it just started recently.

Re: siriusxm

2012-10-11 Thread Scott Davert
Hi Mike.
The iOS app is sort of usable. There are some unlabeled buttons in the
app, but you can use the app itself either by creating custom lables
or just memorizing what the buttons are. I only know that the first
unlabeled button is for categories and the second for all channels.
The other issue then becomes that you don't actually see the channel
names, just the now playing info. I'm not sure what the other 3
unlabled buttons are in the app, since I had a trial that has expired.

I have until recently subscribed for several years. I finally gave it
 up largely to its inaccessibility.
When Sirius XM were separate entities, their respective sites were
somewhat usable. However, since the merger, the flash all of the
pretties for the sighted community's benefit told me they no longer
wanted my money nor my patronage. Their ipad App is half usable. Last I
knew, their iphone app was still crap.
I realize we as visually impaired consumers can not stomp our feet
throw tantrums; however, if a service takes our money as a subscription
as does siriusxm, or services like it, we deserve a means to facilitate
our business along side our sighted counterparts.
As a general rule their customer service is outsourced
to other parts of the world. Seldom did I find anyone who would help me
take care of anything supposedly accessible on the site. I wish those
luck who try. I have found plenty of accessible content on the web that
more than makes up for the inadequacies of siriusxm.

using bookmarks in Safari

2012-10-11 Thread Nicholas Parsons
I've had the same problem. Sometimes I've been unable to fix it for weeks,
wondering the whole time where that bookmarks table has gone. Because of this,
I tent to use the bookmarks menu most of the time.

I'm never exactly sure what I do to fix the problem. I think I've interacted
with the horizontal splitter and then used the up arrow without the VO keys. I
think this may have worked. Sometimes I try funny things with the mouse too.

Would be very interested if anyone has a reliable solution for this.

Actually, I've just had a thought. Safari hasn't been going busy for me when I
interact with and move the horizontal splitter recently. I've also had a RAM
upgrade fairly recently from 4GB to 16GB. Perhaps the additional RAM is
allowing Safari to change the display more easily.

Re: Simply Bizarre Mail Client Problem, Help Requested

2012-10-11 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I'm not sure how Outlook deals with GMail but I don't believe that it is a
MacOS Mail client issue as GMail behaves the same even at the Web interface.
That is, if you send a message to yourself when at the GMail web interface, it
will not appear in your Inbox. Sometimes, when performing a Reply All when you
are a part of the group, the message will appear in your Inbox. That's the
only situation when I've seen GMail allow messages to yourself show up in the
Inbox. I've just got used to it as normal GMail behaviour.

RE: Simply Bizarre Mail Client Problem, Help Requested

2012-10-11 Thread M. Taylor
Hi Kim,

Before beginning this thread, I went to the gMail web interface and sent
myself a message and it did, indeed, show up in my Inbox almost
immediately. Then, I opened both Outlook and the Mac Mail client.

Both clients displayed the message.

The problem only seems to occur when sending a message from the Mac mail
client.

Strange.

Hi,

I'm not sure how Outlook deals with GMail but I don't believe that it is a
MacOS Mail client issue as GMail behaves the same even at the Web interface.
That is, if you send a message to yourself when at the GMail web interface,
it will not appear in your Inbox.  Sometimes, when performing a Reply All
when you are a part of the group, the message will appear in your Inbox.
That's the only situation when I've seen GMail allow messages to yourself
show up in the Inbox.  I've just got used to it as normal GMail behaviour.

Hi,

Does UCLA use Google Apps for Education?  Thus, essentially being a GMail
account?  If so, GMail does not show messages that were sent to yourself,
it's just the way GMail has their servers set up.  I've seen this with other
providers as well so it's possible that is the reason.  If you are hoping to
save those messages you send, simply go to your Sent messages and move

2012-10-11 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Nicholas,

Your question is absolutely endearing and put a big smile on my face. Thank
you.

To answer: It's not that I want to send messages to myself.

This all started when, for whatever reason, I could no longer see messages
posted to mailing lists as I have come to expect from both the Mac mail
client and MS Outlook.

When I noticed this on the Mac, yesterday, I began sending test messages
from the mac only to learn from list recipients that my messages were,
indeed, being sent out.

Then I confirmed that this was not a problem on my Windows computer.

Finally, instead of flooding the list with test messages, I began sending
them to myself and discovered that they would not show up in my Inbox or in
the gMail web interface client when generated from the Mac.

when you try sending them to yourself, do they show up in the sent mailbox?

KeyNote Question

2012-10-11 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hello all.
I figure it's about time to figure out some of the ins and outs of KeyNote, and
so now I've got some questions.
1. Is each slide treated like a mini document, and can I work with it as such?
2. When playing through the slide show with Command Option P, should I not be
able to read any text in the currently playing slide?
Thanks for any assistance.
PS: If it is not worth trying to make KeyNote work, are there any powerPoint
alternatives? I here PowerPoint isn't even accessible under Windows Anyway.

I Am Not Alone and Resolution To Mail Problem Discovered

2012-10-11 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

First please accept my gratitude for working with me on this one.

I am so glad we talked about it for it caused me to go into my gMail account
settings on the web and make some much needed adjustments.

Turning to my problem, as it turns out, I am not alone. After doing some
Google searches, I discovered that many, many other Macintosh Mail client
people are experiencing the exact same issue. Apparently, the issue reared
its ugly head back in July, before the most recent update.

I discovered this, for myself, when I restored my Mac back to the first
build of Mountain Lion, a couple of hours ago, only to discover that the
problem existed back then.

By the way, I am now running the original Mountain Lion so need to update to
10.8.2 in a few minutes.

Anyway, getting back to my resolution, it turns out that one must disable
the Save A Copy of Message on the Mac option in order for gMail to work as
it does in Outlook, Edora, etc.

I turned off this option and can now, once again, see messages posted to
this list or those sent to myself or those copied to myself.

From what I have learned on the web, so far, no one knows if this is an
issue with Google or the Mac Mail client but, at least, we're all up and
running.

Finally, I will now update my Mac again and see if this resolution holds.

Thank you all so very muchg for being here.

Most Sincerely,

Mark

Sounds like a gmail filtering thing, not a apple mail thing. I use to have
this same issue with yahoo groups, it not showing up in my selected mailbox,
but everyone else could see it. You basically have to manipulate the filter
in to putting the messages in to the same folder with key words. and even

how to view/assign events to a calendar?

2012-10-11 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I'm trying to assign a bunch of events to a calendar. I haven't added them yet,
but I want them all to default to this calendar when I do; how would I do that?

On a similar note, how would I limit events shown to a calendar or set of
calendars? For instance, I have five calendars set up, and maybe I only want to
see work-related items. Is this possible? If so, how? I am using ML, but a
lesson on how to do this on iOS6 would be very much appreciated as well. Thanks.

typing in YoruFukurou suddenly saying odd things

2012-10-11 Thread Alex Hall
Hi again,
For the last couple days, something really odd has happened on and off as I
type tweets in Yoru. Every time I press a key, vo says apple, submenu. It
usually speaks characters I delete, and text review commands work as expected,
but it just repeats apple, submenu every time I type. This is made even more
odd by the fact that I have key echo off completely, even word echo is off. I
saw this happen once or twice in other apps, but Yoru is the main culprit by
far. I have restarted twice, and the problem persists. Unfortunately, I can't
think of anything I might have done to cause this to start happening. Has
anyone else ever seen this? I'm running ML (all up to date) on a 2011 Mini.
Thanks.

Sounds like a gmail filtering thing, not a apple mail thing. I use to have
this same issue with yahoo groups, it not showing up in my selected mailbox,
but everyone else could see it. You basically have to manipulate the filter
in to putting the messages in to the same folder with key words. and even
sometimes that doesn't work. I know when I send a messages, half the time
it shows up in my personal mailbox, not my filtered mailbox for the selected
list. I just looked, and see your not using Gmail, so I stand corrected,
now I have know clue why your having this issue. HTH Kliphton Senior

 Hello Everyone,

First please accept my gratitude for working with me on this one.

I am so glad we talked about it for it caused me to go into my gMail
account settings on the web and make some much needed adjustments.

Turning to my problem, as it turns out, I am not alone. After doing
some Google searches, I discovered that many, many other Macintosh
Mail client people are experiencing the exact same issue. Apparently,
the issue reared its ugly head back in July, before the most recent
update.

I discovered this, for myself, when I restored my Mac back to the
first build of Mountain Lion, a couple of hours ago, only to discover
that the problem existed back then.

By the way, I am now running the original Mountain Lion so need to
 update to
 10.8.2 in a few minutes.

Anyway, getting back to my resolution, it turns out that one must
disable the Save A Copy of Message on the Mac option in order for
gMail to work as it does in Outlook, Edora, etc.

I turned off this option and can now, once again, see messages posted
to this list or those sent to myself or those copied to myself.

From what I have learned on the web, so far, no one knows if this is
an
issue with Google or the Mac Mail client but, at least, we're all up
 and running.

Finally, I will now update my Mac again and see if this resolution holds.

Thank you all so very muchg for being here.

 Most Sincerely,

 Mark

Re: siriusxm

2012-10-11 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi. I too am having problems with Sirius XM. One of them, which is a stupid
policy in my opinion, is that you need a credit card to subscribe. That's not
good if a company wants to attract more customers. And even though they're
giving me the run around in order to subscribe, I will be subscribing with them
next week. The point I'm trying to get at is that we blind users shouldn't give
up so easily. The more of us bark at them, the more they'll consider changing
their errors. I know we're in the minority here, but that shouldn't stop us
from listening to great music and sports. And yes, the iPhone app is a bit
inaccessible here and there, well most parts here in Canada are accessible, but
that's another reason to hastle them. Oh and by the way, to the person that
wanted to subscribe to the Internet service only, as of October 1 they changed
that. You have to buy an actual radio and subscribe with that radio in order to
subscribe with the internet service. I tried to do that and they told me that I
can't do that without a radio.

Can't remove an item from Finder

2012-10-11 Thread Agent086b
Hello, recently I installed Skype on my Mac.
I decided to remove it by deleting the Skype DMG from Appes. Some time later I
emptied the Trash. I now find when I am using Finder and arrow down the sidebar
when I get to the bottom I hear Finder can't open the file Skype DMG file as it
is in the trash. It also says to drag it out of the trash. This is not possible
as the Trash has been emptied. Any ideas? If this was a Windows machine I would
edit out all references to Skype in the Registry file. Is there something
similar on the Mac?
Thanks as always for any help.

Re: Can't remove an item from Finder

2012-10-11 Thread Cheryl Ann Homiak
Are you sure your trash actually completely emptied with no warnings or
errors? A dmg file won't empty from the trash if something from it is
still mounted, usually on your desktop. If you don't see an app or
whatever the dmg mounted in the desktop, I'm not sure. Have you restarted
your computer since you emptied the trash? if not, restart your computer
and then see if the trash still empties anything more and see if you still
see the dmg in your sidebar.

stable?
WIll it feel a bit more like bootcamp responsiveness?
Thanks.

Thanks.

Re: vmware and 8 gb ram

2012-10-11 Thread Chris Blouch
Depends on why it was running slow. If you had 4GB of RAM before and
only allocated 1GB to Fusion then it might not have been a RAM
limitation. Generally I've found Windows beats on my hard drive a lot
and from friends who have gone the SSD route VMWare really picks up the
pace. So I suspect the biggest improvement would be if you can up your
disk performance. CPU also helps if you have a few to spare.

Hello all so what should I choose for a 2012 Macbook Pro 13 inch without
retina display with 4 GB of RAM and a Core I5 processor? Thanks!
