Re: A Bluetooth pairing issue

2013-07-02 Thread Chris H
Nothing. The mac does not provide services to the iPhone alone. You need
an app like Type2Phone, a mac app that turns your mac into a bluetooth
keyboard for your iDevice, paid. Once installed and running the mac will
have a service available which your iPhone can connect to.

IOS Swipe Down Question

2013-07-02 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

Funny been using the iPhone for years, and since IOS 6 I love the ability in
many apps to delete as a swipe down option. Hopefully in IOS 7 they will
include more options than just delete and default. Does anyone know what the
default gesture does? I have not used it at all, but have seen it many apps.
Can you program it? It doesn't seem to do anything, what am I missing here?
Thanks

The default gesture for example would open a message in the messages or
mail app.

Re: IOS Swipe Down Question

2013-07-02 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Brian, the default gesture is just the same as a double tap. Whatever doing a
double tap would do, that's what the default gesture would do. So, depending on
where in Downcast you're talking about, the default button would play the
podcast episode or open the podcast to view the contained episodes.

Re: Markdown rendering tool?

2013-07-02 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Alex,

What you want is called MultiMarkdown Composer II. It's brilliant. YOu type
your markdown in an edit field and can VO once to the right to see the HTML
area with your rendered HTML. Exports to multiple formats and has a great help
section for all the supported markdown.

It's available in the Mac App Store but is also, I think, available outside the
Mac App Store.

It used to be able to be used by Mars Edit as an external editor, but now given
App Store sandboxing and other complications it cannot. The developer of Mars
Edit is working on an alternative though. However, I can recommend a bunch of
services which will allow you to copy your markdown and paste as HTML. You can
email me off list for these. You can also save as an HTML file, change the file
extension to .txt, and then copy and paste your code into the HTML editor on
Mars Edit.

Needless to say it works great with VoiceOver. I would do all my word
processing in MultiMarkdown Composer II except that I'm still not sure how to
handle all the CSS stuff and the footnotes don't work seamlessly when imported
into Microsoft Word.

Just to add to Alex's info: Although, as Alex said, if you export a document
from Dropbox in iOS to Pages and edit the document those edits will not be
automatically synced with Dropbox, there are some text editors, such as
DropText, which do work more seamlessly with Dropbox on iOS.

Re: Markdown rendering tool?

2013-07-02 Thread Alex Hall
Thanks for the recommendation. I don't have $12 to drop on an app right now, so
another service would be helpful. I'm assuming, then, that iText Express has no
Markdown support? I might just end up using Mars Edit to write and see if it
renders correctly, then copying out my markdown and closing the draft without
saving.

Why can't we all talk nicely on this list. If you can't be nice or don't feel
nice just quit posting until you feel better. This list use to be respectful of
everyone's views. But the facts are, even if nobody likes it, some of us have
Windows on our Macs and we're all going to have issues so it would be nice if
we could get on and discuss our problems. Some lists who discuss Macs do not
allow people to talk about anything Windows so just be grateful that we're
allowed on this one. I'm not criticising anyone, but I'd like everyone who
shares ideas and things to get on as we're all in the same boat have Macs or
potentially wishing to get one so please let's just get on and not quarrell.
That's my plea for today.

Hi Kawal,

Nice sentiment, but unfortunately, not realistic. You have some who have an ax

just like any group, there are jerks, no matter the circumstance. Frankly, if
I couldn't assist people on occasion and get get useful info, I'd drop off this

disgusting, and I wis the mods would take people to task. Just my two sense.

Re: VM Ware Help Needed

2013-07-02 Thread Les Kriegler
Well-said, Scott. You should never be afraid to admit you don't know something
and ask for assistance. One of the biggest problems I see in the support
business are the representative who feel they must answer a question even if
they don't have a clue as to what they are talking about. I do consulting and
training, and the first thing I acknowledged is that I'd much rather admit that
I don't know something. I think consumers are more interested that you do the
research and answer their question rather than pretend you know something when
you don't. So you did nothing wrong here.

dropbox

2013-07-02 Thread jean parker
Thanks Alex for your reply.
What I want to do for now is to be able to upload and download files from my
drop boxes on both i phone and mac. So I opened a document that was in my
dropbox on my i phone and tapped actions. It said I had to do something in
settings to allow it to access my photos. Not sure what is going on, it seems
a bit convoluted to me.
I think what would help would be a step by step explanation of how to do this
in both directions. So the objective is to be able to transfer documents
between both devices.
I also obtained a program called file drive but I want to use dropbox because
of the storage and ability to give access to a third party.
All help is most welcome and thanks,
Jean

should be answered with respect and does it realy matter if somebody is
earning money at the end of the day we all need help at some time or other
and this list can be a great source of information and help so please lets

Hi Kawal,

Nice sentiment, but unfortunately, not realistic. You have some who have an
ax to grind and are nasty by nature. Blindness has nothing to do with it,
it's just like any group, there are jerks, no matter the circumstance.
Frankly, if I couldn't assist people on occasion and get get useful info,
I'd drop off this list today because of the pettiness and nastiness I've
seen. It's absolutely disgusting, and I wis the mods would take people to
task. Just my two sense.

Re: dropbox

2013-07-02 Thread Alex Hall
Not actions, there is an export button once the file loads (it is dimmed until
the file has completely downloaded from Dropbox's servers). That is where you
can send the document to other apps. As I said, an app with that "open in" or
similar option is the only way to move files between apps, and Dropbox is no
different, so a step-by-step is impossible since each app will handle the
process in its own way.

what about Idrive

2013-07-02 Thread Ray Foret jr
Hi there,

A few weeks ago, I asked this and never got a reply of any sort. Has anybody
tried Idrive? IF so, is it accessible? I ask because I find Drop Box becoming
more and more an issue. Not being able to access the preferences on the latest
version, and, the extremely slow upload speeds make me want something faster.
My upload speed is measured at about 1MBPS; but, I'm lucky if Drop Box lets me
upload faster than about 164KBPS. That's unacceptible in my book.

VMWare Fusion DVD arrived with no license key

2013-07-02 Thread Phil Halton
Well, like a few others here, I took advantage of what seemed to be a "too good
to be true" price for Fusion5 from Dell. $14 (plus shipping brought it up
around $22). I just installed it and am told that it is not yet licensed.
Neither is There a Product/license key anywhere on the packaging, which
consists of a quickstart guide, the DVD in a plain paper sleeve, and a stupid
little VMWare Fusion sticker depicting a stick figure man with the word
"Fusion" underneath him (like I'm going to proudly display that sticker
somewhere).
I fear I've been duped! I think what I bought was the perverbial "hard copy
backup DVD" that vendors try to push on you when buying software through
digital download.

yes, I fear we've been duped my fello bargain hunters!
Already out $22 for the DVD, I now get to shell out an additional $49 or
whatever the price is to buy a license key from VMWare on their website.

Re: Talking Dashboard Update: v1.1 Beta – Observations on Reminders Script

2013-07-02 Thread Nicholas Parsons
HI Alex,

The Reminders Script works really well. Thank you. Here are my observations,
comments and requests:
You mention "name" as a keyword but in the actual script you seem to use
"title" as the keyword. I think this just needs to be made consistent so as not
to confuse some uses.
If a reminder has no due date, the script uses the reminder alert date instead.
That is, It will announce it if the alert date has passed, and will announce
the alert date as the $dueDate.
If a Reminder has both an alert date and a due date the script will simply rely
on the due date as normal. So, it will only announce it if the due date has
passed, regardless of the alert date. If the alert date has passed but not the
due date, it will not be announced.
I'm really impressed that it works this way with alert dates and due dates.
However, it would be great if it would announce the reminder if the alert date
had passed, even if the due date had not yet passed. But then again this might
not be necessary if you develop the other script to announce up-coming
reminders.
It would be really classy if you could modify the $dueDate to speak relative
time for due dates within 24 hours. For example, it could say "Today, 9AM" or
"Yesterday, 10PM", etcetera. This sounds really difficult to me and it would
not be of much practical significance, but if possible it would be pretty cool
and make things easier to listen to.

Cheers,
Nic

to address the part about seeing hidden files the short answer is it’s very
difficult and you shouldn’t, having access to hidden files means you could
delete something important (example most folders have 2 hidden files telling
the finder specific information about said folder)

Just letting you know the RAM script is working much better for me now, except
that the total RAM seems to vary a bit, but always within a few MB of my total

I'm still having the same issue with the Bluetooth script though, it just
randomly mentions one of my paired but not connected devices.

Do you mean empty trash? One way is to navigate to the Doc with VO-D, type

Re: dropbox

2013-07-02 Thread Nicholas Parsons
HI,
Just to add a little to Alex's explanation…
Dropbox isn't so much as a file transfer app, but a file syncing app. The idea
is that all your files remain within Dropbox and it keeps them in sync between
your various devices.
The easiest way to add documents to Dropbox is on your Mac or Windows Machine.
Simply save them in Dropbox or cut and paste them there. They will then appear
in the Dropbox app on your iOS device, and any other devices you have.
>From within Dropbox on your iOS device you can view documents and export them
>as Alex said.
You can only add some documents to Dropbox from your iOS device. Whether you
can or not depends on which app those documents are in. There needs to be an
"Export" or "Open in…" button as Alex said. So, within Mail, for example, you
can double tap an attachment to download it, double tap it again to open it,
double tap the actions button and then double tap open in Dropbox. The actual
steps might be slightly different to this as I don't have an email with an
attachment in my inbox right now to test, but if you follow that general idea
you should get there.
So, if you could let us know what documents in particular you are trying to add
to your Dropbox from iOS we might be able to help more.
If you're wanting to transfer documents from your iOS device to someone else
you might like to look into PhoneDrive as well.
Cheers,
Nic

This list is my primary avenue for announcing releases. Once the scripts are
finalized (out of beta), they will have a permanent home which you can check
from time to time. I do not currently have plans for an email list for
announcements, but I may consider that for the future. I am also looking into a
way to have a script check for updates, which should help a lot. thanks for
your interest and, as I said before, please email comments, questions, and
suggestions to this list to facilitate more discussion and testing.

odd problems with VMWare Fusion and Remote Disk/Airdrop

2013-07-02 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I am trying to see if my copy of VMWare, gotten from that Dell sale, is
unlicensed. Since it is a dvd, I stuck it in the old Mini that still has the
disk drive and tried to copy it via Remote Disk. That failed completely,
prompting me for a password when i pasted it into the applications folder and
then auto-launching itself to just sit there claiming it was initializing. I
force-quit it since nothing was happening and I had not actually launched the
app in the first place, and tried instead to Airdrop the file. It never went
above 0kb in my downloads folder. What could be happening? Is VMWare just a
really strange app, or am I doing something wrong? Thanks.

Re: How to force items to be deleted from trash

2013-07-02 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Try adding the Option key to that key combination. The Option key brings up
special items that normally aren't seen in menus. For example, in the Go menu,
while the Option key is down, the Library folder choice is available whereas it
is not without the Option key down. The Option key can also be used to force
locked items into the Trash. An extra thing to try is to Restart your computer
then retry emptying the Trash with the cmd-Option-shift-Delete combination.
Occasionally, items that are locked will not be released from the Trash until
after Restart. If none of this works, there is a way in Terminal to really
force the issue, I will let you know that one if all else fails.

In answer to your question about the items only being present when your
external HD was connected, this is normal behaviour. If those items originally
resided on the external HD, then they are placed in a Trash folder that is
hidden on the external HD. Just like the situation when you have multiple
users on a computer, each has their own Trash.

HTH.

Re: getting Voice Over to talk off the DvD

2013-07-02 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

There is a certain spot around the time when you get to choose the language. I
usually just listen for the DVD to quit making the constant reading sound then
press FN-cmd-f5. The DVD should start making reading noises again and VO
should start up. If VO is really quiet, try pressing VO-cmd-right arrow twice
then VO-cmd-up arrow to increase the volume. Sometimes, if VO has cached
itself at a different spot, two right arrows will take you to a different
modifier such as Intonation. If you can hear it a little bit, you're hoping
for VO to say "Volume", then you can use the VO-cmd-up arrows to increase it.

HTH.

pairing iPhone with Mac

2013-07-02 Thread shane christenson
Hi, listers. This I think was discussed on this list very recently, but I
accidentally deleted the thread. When I try to pair my iPhone to my Mac, the
phone says the device isn't supported. How do I fix this? Thanks.

Shane

Re: Talking Dashboard Update: v1.1 Beta

2013-07-02 Thread Maurice Mines
No problem I can make a special effort to check this list. So my final question
before I call it a night, where does one download your script from? Have a good
one. Sincerely Maurice.

Re: odd problems with VMWare Fusion and Remote Disk/Airdrop

2013-07-02 Thread Maurice Mines
The way you can tell if the copy is licensed or not is when you try to install
it it will ask you for the product key. If you don't have one it will sing you
to the website so you can either get a 30 day demonstration key or purchase
one. That is the only way that I know of to tell if you have a copy of VMware
fusion that is retail. Or if you have a demonstration version. My advice is to
certainly get the demonstration key and try the product out for a month to make
sure it will work with your set up completely, before you spend 49, or $99. The
reason why I'm giving two prices here, the $49 wind is intended for the
end-user, and the $99 version is intended for professionals and or developers.
Hope this helps? Sincerely Maurice. PS if you are still having problems
figuring out what you actually got from this company, called VMware? Their
staff will walk you through a series of steps to help determine what you
actually have. And in the four or so years that I have been using the product I
have not been hassled by their staff on this issue at all. The only issues that
I have with their staff is that they don't quite understand that not everybody
here in the US is fully sided, and is not an IT manager or some sort. But if
you know that going in, you should do just fine. Remember all I'm saying here
is take their advice, but while on the call just had somewhat of a thick skin.
