Finding highlighted text in Safari with quick notes and VoiceOver

2022-03-09 Thread Brett Campbell
Hello,

I’m getting around to exploring the new quick notes feature in Monterey. One
feature is to highlight text on a web page in safari. Once a quick note is
created, only the link to the site appears in the note. To get to the
highlighted text, one hits the link, the page opens, and the highlighted text
appears on the page. I can’t figure out a way for VoiceOver to find the
highlighted text. Does anyone know how to do this?

Brett

Re: PDF pen question

2022-01-26 Thread Brett Campbell
I purchased PDF pen with the purpose of being able to read documents within the
app. I was hoping for a solution to the double line reading I experience in
Preview. I’ll keep your suggestion in mind, thanks.

PDF pen question

2022-01-25 Thread Brett Campbell
I am new to PDF pen. When I open a document, it will show there are six pages,
for example. I’m able to read the first couple of pages, then VoiceOver says
the remaining pages are blank. When I open the same document in Preview, I’m
able to read all pages. I’m hoping someone here can tell me what I’m doing
wrong.

Thank you,

Ever since upgrading to WatchOS 8, I am unable to dictate messages. I can

I use the watch for messaging a lot, so this is a major inconvenience.

Hoping someone can check a web page with VoiceOver

2018-10-30 Thread Brett Campbell
Hello Mac visionaries,

If someone has a moment to spare, I’m asking you to check out a web page with
VoiceOver. This page is the locations and hours for the Salt Lake Community
college Disability Resource Center. There are 3 tabs, Taylorsville Redwood
Campus, South City Campus and Jordan Campus. I’m told that visually selecting a
tab shows the info for the campus. I can’t read anything with VoiceOver after
selecting a tab. I’m wondering if the info isn’t seen by VoiceOver or is there
a setting or command I’m not aware of to read the text. The link follows.

Re: Another Dictation Breakthrough

2011-12-23 Thread Brett Campbell
Hello Mark,

This news is good to hear, yet perplexing. I installed Air Dictate on my phone,
along with the software for my Mac earlier today. I found the iPhone app to be
unresponsive with VoiceOver. I couldn't activate the prompt to connect my phone
with the Mac. With VoiceOver off, sighted assistance performed the connection
instantly. Following the connection, I activated VoiceOver again. As I felt
around the screen, it sounded like a keyboard was present, but my borrowed eyes
said there was not a keyboard present. I managed to find the mic button, and
completed one dictation. After that, the mic button was allusive, and when I
managed to come across it, it was unresponsive.
Please share how you found success with this app. I've contacted the dev, and
they opened a ticket. They said perhaps it can be made VO accessible in the
future.

Thanks,

Brett C.

Re: Problem in the address book

2011-03-14 Thread Brett Campbell
It's been my experience that there is no resolution. I type the phone number
without feedback, move out of the edit box, then move back. The number should
then be read. You most likely will be able to interact with the edit box to
make any corrections.

Re: working with the previous recipients table?

2011-03-09 Thread Brett Campbell
Donna,

The copy last phrase to clipboard is one of my favorite features. It's helpful
when traditional copy and paste doesn't seem to work.
When you use control, option, shift C, the last thing VoiceOver spoke will be
added to the clipboard. You can then paste the text anywhere you can paste
using conventional copy and paste.
I find the VO, shift C combination to be a little tricky, so I have setup a
simpler hockey through the VoiceOver utility.

Hello Donna,

In both instances, I use VoiceOver's last phrase copy to pasteboard feature, to
use the address. I use command N, to start a new message and paste the email
address. If you need more information on copy last phrase to pasteboard, let

Re: calendar help needed

I definitely recommend using the VO and arrows to move among the appointments.
To delete a calendar from the calendar list, select the desired calendar, and
bring up an options menu, with VO shift M. You will find an option to delete.

Re: GPS Apps

2011-02-14 Thread Brett Campbell
Hi everyone,

I just purchased Where to? My first concern is there is a message selling 3D
that gets in the way. I can't find a way to dismiss it. The message says the
window will be skipped after purchasing. If I purchase the 3D just to get rid
of the message, do you think the 3D will mess with VoiceOver?
I also have a question about the Bus stops. I'm able to find the stops just
fine, but I'm not able to get additional information on bus times. When I tap
on the more information button, I seem to just get the stop labeled as a map
pin. I don't appear to get more information by double tapping the map pin.
I'm not seeing the Next Transport option Esther mentioned. I'm also not seeing
the next or previous menu mentioned. I'm wondering if the 3D sales pitch is
getting in the way. I usually do quite well at figuring apps out, but I'm a
little stumped here.

Re: Emoticons with VO pronunciation

2011-02-11 Thread Brett Campbell
I have been attempting to create a labeled pronunciation for :D for over a
year, with no luck. No matter how many times I try, VoiceOver just says D.
Like you, I can create labeled pronunciations for most everything else. I'd
like to hear from you if you find a solution.

The theory behind this app sounds great, but the few reviews available, are

Re: Update on SEE Finance

Thanks for this Les. I tried See Finance a year or so ago, but couldn't quite
figure it out. Following your recommendation, I gave it another try. I found
it to be quite accessible and much easier to understand, compared to my prior
trial. The application's tools and ease of use make it well worth the $29.99
price. Thanks again.

Re: creating groups in apple mail

2011-01-17 Thread Brett Campbell
This task is actually accomplished in the Address Book application. You will
create a group, and then you can add the desired contacts to the group. When
composing a message in Mail, you only need to type the name of your group, and
the addresses will be added.
Creating a new group my be problematic if you're using Snow Leopard. It can be
done by turning VoiceOver off, or something like that. There are others on the
list better qualified to describe the process.

Re: pages and the Ipad

2011-01-17 Thread Brett Campbell
The documents are transferred through iTunes. One first imports the documents
into iTunes, and then when the device is connected, transfer the documents to
the device. Following this procedure, an additional step is required. When
Pages is open, go to documents, and select import documents. There will be a
list of the documents that were transferred, and they have to be selected, and
imported, within the device one by one. It took a little practice for me to
feel comfortable with the process.

1password is a program that will save passwords, create passwords, auto log in
with your user name and password, save and auto fill credit card info, provides
a safe place to write and keep notes, auto fills personal information to forms,

Does the Apple TV need to be connected to a TV?

Is the Apple TV required to be connected via HDMI to a TV? I realize it would
need to be connected to have VoiceOver initially started with sighted

I agree, it's annoying. When I get stuck reading incoming messages, I
turn curser tracking off with VO shift F3. This makes it possible for me to

Text Expander, and it's search snippets feature, help request

2010-12-17 Thread Brett Campbell
I just updated Text Expander to 3.x. I'm trying to use the search
snippets feature. I've set up a hockey, and get an edit box and a label saying
search snippets. When I place a word to search in the edit box, nothing seems
to happen. I've used VO spacebar and pressed enter. Has anyone had success
with the search snippets in Text Expander 3.x?

Re: does anyone else use t-mobile and have problems with their site?

2010-12-12 Thread Brett Campbell
Hi,

Unfortunately, it's been my experience anyway, the T-mobile site not
only doesn't work optimally with VoiceOver, it doesn't work optimally with Mac.
Sighted members of my household sometimes have to clear the dust from the
Windows machine to perform certain tasks within our account on their site.

Re: iWork: Numbers specifically

2010-11-28 Thread Brett Campbell
Anne, in regards to your suggestion of using the trackpad to find a cell, this
does work great. However, when I locate a desired cell on the trackpad, and
then use the keyboard to enter data, the focus isn't in the cell I had focused
on with the trackpad. Is this your experience? Are you able to type in the
cell you located with the trackpad?

Re: mag track pad pairs with macbook pro but not mac mini

2010-11-17 Thread Brett Campbell
Unfortunately, I've found the bluetooth devices often don't like to play with
other devices when they are paired with another. This is often, but not always
true. Sometimes they will work if the first device is turned off, or bluetooth
is turned off. I think the Magic Trackpad only likes to be paired with one
device at a time.

I share the same experience. It started after the latest update. I've found

Re: iDisk not in sync? Need help please.

2010-09-20 Thread Brett Campbell
Hello Jenny,

I think I have an answer for you. Go to Mobile Me in your system preferences.
Select the sync tab, and look for advanced, and select it. You will see a list
of your computers syncing with Mobile Me, and a place to select a percentage of
data change to be alerted to. Following that you'll see a Reset Sync History…
button. Select this button. You will be presented with the options of
replacing On this computer with sync info from MobileMe., or Replace All Sync
Info on MobileMe with sync information from this computer. If everything is
how you want it to be on your Mac, I suggest replacing Mobile Me data with the
data on your Mac. It may take a while. I had to do this one time in the past
year, and it cleared up my issues identical to yours.

Seeking enlightenment in regards to iTunes equalizer

2010-08-25 Thread Brett Campbell
Hello,

I've noticed that a few list members use DJ apps etc. I'm hoping someone can
provide tips tweaking the equalizer settings in iTunes. I recognize listening
preferences is entirely individual, so I'm asking that someone explain what
each setting changes in the sound. I count a total of 11 boxes to adjust
settings. VoiceOver only reads a number along with hertz. Can anyone explain
what each box changes in the music or a DVS movie audio track?

Thanks,

Brett

Re: Exercising and iPod

2010-06-08 Thread Brett Campbell
It's the strangest thing. I also couldn't find it in a search, so I googled it
and found a direct link to it through a couple of reviews. The links brought
up a message in the iTunes store saying the app is currently not available in
the U.S. store. My uneducated guess is that the developer is about to submit
an update. It really is great, and an update just came out a week or so ago.
The developer has been quite mindful of VoiceOver. I'm guessing it will show
up soon.

What are the monitor connections on Mac mini and Mac Book Pro?

2010-04-24 Thread Brett Campbell
What are the monitor connections on the Mac mini purchased March 09, and the
Mac Book Pro purchased July 09? I thought they both have mini DVI, but the
mini DVI to DVI connector that came with the Mac mini doesn't fit in any of the
slots on the Mac Book Pro. I'm determining if I need to purchase separate
accessories to connect them to a TV via HDMI. Thanks.

Re: Can a mini be connected to a TV and work with VoiceOver?

2010-04-22 Thread Brett Campbell
As I stated earlier, I'm a novice when it comes to cables. My early research
shows that one can purchase a mini DVI to HDMI cable. For the sighted people
in the household, the HDMI is supposed to provide better picture quality over
the VGA connection. Rumors state that future Macs will move to HDMI, which
will enable one to transfer picture and sound through one cable.

Re: A mobile Me question

2010-04-21 Thread Brett Campbell
Yes, it is a service. When you purchase from the Apple site, or Amazon, you
are sent a code in the mail. When you receive the code, you enter it on your
mobile me account. I don't know why it's less expensive on amazon, but I have
purchased it myself with success. You can also get the $69 price with select
purchases through Apple. The price provides Mobile Me service for a year.

You're looking for Infovox. In my opinion, Heather is the best of the U.S.

2010-04-14 Thread Brett Campbell
Is anyone on the list trying the newly released Echofon for Mac? It seems
quite accessible with VoiceOver, with the slight exception that the tweets
aren't being read. I'm wondering if my tweets aren't being downloaded for some
reason, or if VoiceOver can't read them. If someone else has taken this
twitter client for a spin, I'd be interested in hearing about your experience.

Re: Battery status

2010-04-14 Thread Brett Campbell
You can navigate to this area in two ways that I'm aware of. You can either
use the VoiceOver command VO M, pressing the M twice while holding down the
control and option keys. The other is a Mac command, control F8. Use VO plus
arrow keys to find what you're looking for.

Hello Donna,

It's simple. Go to Window on the menu bar, VO down arrow until you find

Are any of you using the Genius Mixes feature? I'm not talking about selecting

When I select the Genius Mixes in the source list, and VO right, nothing is
read by VoiceOver. The behavior is the same as we experienced with the

I have confirmed with sighted assistance that the Genius Mixes playlists are

borrowed eyes confirmed the situation is the same of the previously mentioned
applications source list.
I'd be thrilled to hear that it's working for you. Either way, please let me

Using iChat with facebook Chat

2010-02-11 Thread Brett Campbell
Do you know that it's possible to use iChat for facebook chat? I didn't.
Below is a link leading to instructions for setting it up. It's quite simple,
and it works. In case you're a little slow on the draw like myself, when the
instruction in step 4 tells you to enter your user account name, it is not the
email address used to log in, if that's the method you use. You need to have
created your facebook user name. For example my user name is brettc3. I don't
recall whether the user name is created in settings or profile. The user name
makes it easier for people that know it, to go to your page directly via URL.
Anyway, if Adium isn't your thing, here is another option.

Numbers, jumping to start or end of columns and rows

2010-01-21 Thread Brett Campbell
Is there a way to jump to the start or end of a column or row with VoiceOver in
Numbers? I've been using Tables, but I am now giving Numbers a try. In
Tables, I can use command along with arrow keys to quickly get to the start or
end of a column or row. This doesn't appear to work in Numbers.
In addition to the answer to this question, I would appreciate any helpful
hints for a beginner, to master this application.

Thanks,

Brett

Requesting help with combining .avi files and burn to dvd.

2010-01-06 Thread Brett Campbell
I want to combine two .avi files and burn it to dvd in a way that it will
automatically play in most every dvd player. I'm a complete beginner in this
area, so I'm hoping someone will provide any necessary information. I can send
a sendspace link with the files I'm working with, if anyone is willing to take
a look. It's a public service type video regarding disabilities for my
students.

Thanks,

Brett C.

Re: Importing audiobooks into Itunes continued

I thought the join files option would do the trick. Another idea that comes to
mind is going into iTunes, select your created audio book, use command I to get
info, select options and check the box that says Part of a gapless album.
. If this doesn't work, I'm wondering if the space between the tracks is dead
air on the actual file, rather than space between the files.

Hello,

In many of the messages I read on this list, there are replies with quotes that
start with the originals senders name, followed by the word wrote, followed by
a only a selection of the original text, and is often followed by the answer to
their question. Are people manually typing the person's name followed by
wrote, or is there a way to do this automatically? If there is a way to do
this automatically, I ask that someone will explain how to do it.

Re: weird can't rename contact group in address book

2009-11-11 Thread Brett Campbell

Hello Yuma,

I just want to let you know I am experiencing the same issues. I first
encountered them when I updated to Snow Leopard. I contacted Apple and they
confirmed that it is a bug. I was hoping for a fix with 10.6.2, but not for
me. This is a VoiceOver issue. With sighted assistance, the groups can be
created and renamed with no problem.
According to other responses to your message, other lucky ones are not having
this problem. I just want to let you know that you're not alone in this.

Re: viewing suggestions in spell checker

2009-10-05 Thread Brett Campbell

I apologize if this is common knowledge. I just thought I'd mention
that I like to use the command, shift, semi colin. This brings up a
full dialogue that works quickly for me. VO will highlight the first
misspelled word and you VO down arrow twice to see the suggestions
table. Hit enter on the desired suggestion. I've experienced that
sometimes the suggestions table has the word ready to hit enter on,
and other times I have to interact with the table.
Exploring the spell check dialogue, one will find ignore and learn.
The learn button will add your chosen spelling to the dictionary. You
can hit escape anytime to exit spell check. If you are presented with
a misspelled word that you're unsure of, hitting escape will land the
VO cursor at that word in your document., so you can edit from that
point.
This spell check feature is available most anywhere there is an edit
box, Text Edit, Mail, Safari etc.
Nothing new here, just thought I'd elaborate in case someone reading
this is new to the feature.

Requesting help with creating a new group in Address Book with SL

2009-09-19 Thread Brett Campbell

Hello,

I'm trying to create a new group in my address book for the first time
using Snow Leopard. I can't seem to figure it out. When I select
create new group, a group titled Unknown group appears in the groups
table. I have selected rename group from the edit menu, but nothing
seems to happen. I've hit enter and interacted with the Unknown
group, but I can't change the name like a file or folder.
In leopard, when creating a new group, a dialogue appeared with a edit
box for the name along with an OK button.
The funny thing is that It's now simple as can be to create a smart
group in the address book. The problem here is that the smart groups
aren't syncing to my iPhone with Mobile Me.
I'm hoping someone can give this a try and point me in the correct
direction

Thanks,

Brett

Hi James,

A really cool feature with SL is that you no longer need to use the VO

Re: Snow Leopard and mail preview pane

2009-09-16 Thread Brett Campbell

I prefer to turn off preview pane when I'm going through the junk
folder. This way the message isn't triggered as read before I
delete. I don't even know for sure if this is necessary. I've just
read posts that you will receive more spam if it appears read. I have
no personal knowledge of this.

Re: Pronounciations

2009-09-16 Thread Brett Campbell

Go to the VoiceOver utility with VO F8 and go to verbosity. Select
the text tab. VO right arrow until you reach speak numbers as. If
you select as words, it will pronounce the way you desire.
