Re: requesting help on how to get VO to stop saying clickable when reading

2016-12-01 Thread Andrew Lamanche
You can accomplish this by creating an activity in Voiceover utility. You can
make it specific for Safari and assign a different level of verbosity to the
activity.

Hope this will help.

clickable sorted

I have just discovered that by setting speech verbosity level to low, gets
rid of the annoying 'clickable' prompt from Voiceover. Can always set up an
activity for this particular site, if that setting is too low for an
inexperienced Mac user.

I have configured the verbosity level of Voiceover quite a bit to suit my
needs. However, I cannot get rid of an annoying 'clickable' enouncement
when I move to a heading. Perhaps it is not possible to get rid of this, but
would sure be great for the old nervous system if Alex would just read the
content of the heading without telling me it is clickable.

It means the text can be interacted by clicking with the mouse. Unfortunately,
it depends on the webmaster coding the site whether VoiceOver can activate the

these are things where if a sighted person hovers the mouse over them, you get

If you do a vo shift m on them, you will get a menu to make choices from in

Re: Clickable items in Safari

Hello Jean,

Often, clickable items are places where either a mouse hover or a mouse click
will change what is shown on the page. Try bringing the mouse with VO-Cmd-F5
and doing a VO-Shift-Space type of click and see whether new items have
appeared.

Cheers,

Anne

Vo-space should work. If not, move to the item, press vo-cmd-f5 (you might need

Observation re Clickable Text

2013-12-11 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi list,

Just reporting on some interesting behaviour I just observed which might help
some people with clickable text/AJAX menus.

I was using a website and the main menu had apparently recently been updated.
In Safari version 6.0.5 on Mountain Lion, VoiceOver reported each item as
clickable. I tried doing a VO-space on an item, but it didn't work. I tried
routing the mouse and doing VO-shift-space as well as a physical click on the
TrackPad with TrackPad commander turned off, but neither of these worked
either. I then switched to Google Chrome and tried the same methods, but none
of them worked in Chrome either.

The interesting thing is I tried routing the mouse to the text, and then
turning VoiceOver off with command-F5 and then physically clicking the
TrackPad. This, strangely, worked. It opened an AJAX style submenu with
ordinary links I could click on. I tried this method several times and it
worked. I only tried it in Google Chrome, however.

So, moral of the story is if you find some clickable text or an AJAX style menu
that you can't seem to activate, try routing the mouse, turning VoiceOver off
and physically clicking the TrackPad. Not sure why there would be any
difference with VoiceOver turned on and QuickNav turned off compared with
having VoiceOver turned off, but it was clearly different.

Cheers,
Nic

Re: Safari and clickable elements

2013-07-30 Thread Edward Green
Hi all,

Many thanks for your helpful responses.

Esther, thanks for the detail on navigating with the mouse - that was going to
be my next question.

I have a couple of follow up questions on your post if that's ok.

Firstly, if I have mouse keys enabled, are there any settings I need to change
in order to get Voiceover to read items under the mouse as I navigate? I took
from your post that there might be, but wasn't sure.

Secondly, when I turn mouse keys on in Accessibility under System Preferences,
VO spacebar ceases to work, and I wondered why this might be. I know you said
that mouse keys could create conflicts on laptops, but I don't have numpad
commander enabled. I was able to rectify the situation by using the trackpad
to unstick the setting, and have just set up the option key as a toggle.

Thanks for any help.

Cheers,

VoiceOver-specifc software shortcut that means perform the default action
for a given situation -- which could be to click on an element.
VO-Shift-Space is another VoiceOver specific software shortcut for clicking
your mouse cursor. Pressing the return key will return the default
selections in dialog windows, and is hardware-based and does not rely on
whether you are using VoiceOver, but it doesn't have an effect when you are
supposed to click with a mouse or trackpad on a web page element.

I usually distinguish between hardware clicks and software clicks.
Hardware clicks (with TrackPad, Mouse, or with the Mouse Keys accessibility
solution) work everywhere. VoiceOver-specific software keyclicks may work if
an application is accessible, but otherwise may not work.

The other part of clicking on a web element such as a clickable element is
making sure that your mouse cursor is actually on the element in question.
(This is really annoying, because in some cases I have to change my cursor
tracking preferences under VoiceOVer Utility to either Mouse Cursor follows
VoiceOver Cursor or Mouse Cursor moves VoiceOver Cursor in order for
things to work in environments of transitioning accessibility, such as in the
iCloud or old Mobile Me web pages, or when iTunes or Automator was first
being made accessible). However, in most instances you only need to make
sure, after routing your mouse cursor to your VoiceOver cursor, that you
 issue a hardware click.

Since I don't use a mouse with my Mac laptops, I usually click on elements
using Mouse Keys. If you are using a full size keyboard with NumPad
Commander turned on, you can alternatively use the NumPad Commander shortcut
to click (I think this is Control+5 on the numeric keypad if you use the
default settings, but you should check this). And if you use the TrackPad
you should turn off TrackPad Commander and make sure that you press down hard
 enough to register a click.

You should not have both Mouse Keys and NumPad Commander turned on at the
same time, because they lead to conflicting key definitions. (On a laptop,
this can make some of your keys completely unusable until you sort this.)

Mouse Keys is an accessibility solution for people with motion disabilities
that make it difficult for them to move a mouse precisely to a link or form
control where they need to click or activate or enter text. VoiceOver users
can use Mouse Keys in a couple of settings: 1) to click on elements like your
clickable links where there are accessibility issues in the setup or
application that prevent the VoiceOver shortcuts from working correctly and
 2) to move the mouse cursor to screen locations independently of VoiceOver's
navigation. Again, case 2 is an accessibility problem area. It may be that
player controls can be activated by clicking on them, but the controls are
not exposed to VoiceOver, so you can't move there independently. However, if
you can move your mouse cursor to that position, and click, you can activate
the controls. If you set up VoiceOver to announce what's under the mouse as
you move over the controls navigating with Mouse Keys, you can find out where
the controls are and then click them. Usually, you use external clues for
the position of the controls so you're not exploring randomly. Once your
know where they are relative to a screen element that VoiceOver can see, you
can navigate there again knowing the offsets.

Hope this sketchy explanation works. On extended keyboards, the Mouse Keys
are the 9 number keys of the numeric keypad, with the central 5 key acting
as the current position of the mouse that can be clicked. Pressing the
number keys around that position moves the mouse one screen pixel in that
direction (left, right, up, down, or diagonally). So if you press the 4
key to the left of the 5, you move the mouse 1 pixel to the left. Press
 the 6 key and move

Re: Safari and clickable elements

2013-07-30 Thread Esther
Hi Ed,

First, here's how to have VO announce what's under your mouse cursor. Open
VoiceOver Utility (VO+F8), go to Verbosity (with arrow keys or Command-2),
then select the Announcements tab. Check the box for Speak text under mouse
after delay, then interact with the slider and set the delay to 0 seconds.
Close the window with Command-W. Now if you move your mouse cursor with Mouse
Keys, or if you move your finger along the Trackpad, VO will speak what is
under the mouse.

You can also use your Trackpad to explore your screen this way, and move to
locations independent of navigating to controls that are exposed to VoiceOver,
if you set VoiceOver to speak text under the mouse this way, and turn cursor
tracking off (VO+Shift+F3; but remember to turn it on again with the same
shortcut when you're done; and when you use your Trackpad this way you should
not have Trackpad Commander enabled).

There are other commands that will describe what is under the VoiceOver cursor,
whether or not you you have your verbosity set to speak text under the mouse.
VO+F5 will describe what is under the mouse, while VO+F5+F5 and VO+F5+F5+F5
will describe the x and y pixel coordinates of your mouse cursor (relative to
the top left corner of your screen, or of your window). (If you use these with
Mouse Keys, it can be helpful to lock your VoiceOver keys with VO+semi-colon
before turning Mouse Keys on. That way you only have to press the F5 key to
report positions. Again, remember to unlock your VoiceOver keys by pressing
semi-colon when you are done.)

Hope this did not overload you with information. For many instances, just
using the Trackpad, without necessarily having to use Mouse Keys, may give you
the accessibility that you need. And for information purposes, most controls
and icons on the screen are extended in size, You'll hear VO announce that
element when the mouse cursor is anywhere over the icon. For example, if you
explore the menu bar icons with Mouse Keys, most of the icons are 30 pixels by
30 pixels in size. On web pages, some web designers will make the clickable
area large for ease of use.

On your question about VO+space bar, you would normally be able to click, or
Control+Click with mouse or trackpad (for a context menu), to perform any
actions via hardware clicks. Do you need to use VO+space bar?

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Clickable elements can be very tricky, depending on how the web designer has
implemented Javascript. For example, on the concertwindow.com site, There are
several elements on the front page that rarely do anything when clicked. I find

VO-shift-space, turn on mouse keys and do a num-pad-5, or use the trackpad.
Sometimes just VO-space works. The nice thing about mouse keys is that they are

can use Mouse Keys in a couple of settings: 1) to click on elements like your
clickable links where there are accessibility issues in the setup or
application that prevent the VoiceOver shortcuts from working correctly and 2)
to move the mouse cursor to screen locations independently of VoiceOver's
navigation. Again, case 2 is an accessibility problem area. It may be that
player controls can be activated by clicking on them, but the controls are not
exposed to VoiceOver, so you can't move there independently. However, if you
can move your mouse cursor to that position, and click, you can activate the
controls. If you set up VoiceOver to announce what's under the mouse as you
move over the controls navigating with Mouse Keys, you can find out where the
controls are and then click them. Usually, you use external clues for the
position of the controls so you're not exploring randomly. Once your know
where they are relative to a screen element that VoiceOver can see, you can
navigate there again knowing the offsets.

Hope this sketchy explanation works. On extended keyboards, the Mouse Keys are
the 9 number keys of the numeric keypad, with the central 5 key acting as the
current position of the mouse that can be clicked. Pressing the number keys
around that position moves the mouse one screen pixel in that direction (left,
right, up, down, or diagonally). So if you press the 4 key to the left of
the 5, you move the mouse 1 pixel to the left. Press the 6 key and move to
the right. Press the 8 key and move up, etc.

On a laptop the mouse keys are where the embedded numeric keypad used to be:
the keys below the 7 8 9 keys on the right side of the keyboard, with 7 8 9
on the top row corresponding to 7 8 9 on the numeric keypad, u i o for 4
5 6, and j k l for 1 2 3. So the i key is in the central position of
the 5 key on the numeric keypad, and you click by pressing this key when
Mouse Keys are turned on.

You can set up turning Mouse Keys on and off with 5 presses of the Option key.
Go to the Accessibility under System Preferences with Option+F5, and in the
Mouse Trackpad pane check the box for Press the Option key five times to
turn Mouse Keys off and on, then close the window with Command+W.

So, route your mouse cursor to your VoiceOver cursor, turn Mouse Keys on,
click, and then turn Mouse keys off.
This may be set up to click with Fn+i on a laptop under Mountain Lion, though
just pressing i will work in Lion

Re: Safari and clickable elements

Hi Maria,

Hopefully, when you turned TrackPad Commander off, you didn't move position
when you use the rotor gesture. If you use Mouse Keys to click, there's an
option you can check to ignore built-in trackpad when mouse keys are being
used. Also, presumably you can also check position on the elements with
keyboard and navigation shortcuts, and route your mouse cursor to your
VoiceOver cursor with VO+Command+F5. Finally, there are shortcuts like VO+F5 to
describe what is under the mouse that you could set up custom gestures for.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

clickable?

2011-09-26 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi,

when you come across a place on a web page in safari(or any other web browser
on the mac I suppose), and it says clickable, how do you handle this? I have
tried everything I can think of to access the information and nothing has
worked. vo space, vo shift space, option enter(I was desperate!)-nothing
worked). I also tried turning off my track pad commander and tapping the lower
left corner of my track pad to simulate a mouse click, but nothing.

A sighted friend told me that in this situation, she sees a message on screen
which says click to view next to where I have to click. When she clicks her
mouse on that, a little box pops up and voila, she can read the information.

The site in question at first was www.skinnycow.com

any of their products has nutritional information, but when you try to access
any of it, it says nutritional information, click below to get complete
information

nutritional information(clickable)

then when you do, nothing

anyway, help!

thanks!

Caitlyn
ps-I've run across this on other sites, too, but this one, and the lara bar
site, have been the latest ones.

Clickables are things that, if you just leave your mouse/cursor sit on them for
a certain period, will open or expand information windows about the item.
Sometimes you can VO space of VO shift space (mouse click) on the clickable to
do this, but you don't have to. Often, VO just says Clickable when there's
nothing there to click. It's kinda like data detector present. Not much to

exploring this page, and came across a very bsic question, the answer to which
will probably enable me to move along independently and set goals for my next
training session. On this page, are a number of links, headers, levels, etc.
clicking on links (using VO/spacebar, what then appears are text elements that
say clickable. Probably very simple, but nothing I do brings the clickable
text elements to life.
Tia for any help with this.

Re: VO says clickable after reading every line in an article on the web

2009-12-15 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello James,

To read articles on the Web, I switch to DOM mode using a keyboard commander
hot key I've created. I then use the Web Rotor to select the level 1 heading
with which most articles begin. I use VO-a to read the article.

In general, I prefer Group mode, but when reading articles, group mode puts all
links together at the end of each paragraph turning the whole thing into
nonsense.

Cheers,

Anne

VO says clickable after reading every line in an article on the web

2009-12-14 Thread James Nash
Hi list,

Is there some reason why Voice Over says clickable after reading every line
in an article on the internet? Is there some way of turning it off or is it
informing me of some information that I am unaware of?

Thanks

TC

Re: VO says clickable after reading every line in an article on the web

2009-12-14 Thread carlene knight
Hi James;

Usually when that happens it is informing you that there is a link or button
you can click on for more information about the particular subject of that line
you just read. For instance if you were reading newspaper article about an
ongoing news story, you might see this when referencing a previous article.
Clicking on it would take you to that article. What you were reading must have
a lot of references.. HOpe that helps.

Hi carlene

Thanks so much for your reply. This makes sense, but i don't think that every
line on a BBC news article would have a link attached to it would it? I will go
back and check.

Thanks again

all of those clickable objects that might be at the end of each line? I
notice there are several ways you can view the page. I didn't choose low

Re: VO says clickable after reading every line in an article on the web

2009-12-14 Thread carlene knight
Maybe the VO navigation reads it differently. Come to think of it, I had a
bunch of graphics or something in an article a while back so I stopped reading
text that way. I had forgotten about that. I use the item chooser if I know
the subject of the article that I want to read an once I get to the text, I hit
enter to select it and then VO/a to read it to the end.

Re: Clickable

2009-09-07 Thread Chris Hofstader

Hi,

Clickable is a valid html element that turns an item into something
like a link with a few minor different properties. You should be able
to click the mouse cursor on one of these items and and some action
should occur. If the site you cite has items labeled clickable that
are not it is because their html and/or JavaScript is broken.
Whatever content pops up or is otherwise presented to you when you
click on such an object is up to the authors of the page and is not a
function of the clickable property, Safari or pretty much anything
else you use.

For more on this, you can look at the web content guidelines or, more
to the point for your issue, the web content accessibility guidelines
and the web user agent guidelines. The WCAG tells web authors how to
make the clickable item accessible and the UAG tells screen reader and
other access technology authors how it should be presented to the user.

All of these guidelines plus lots more great stuff can be found at:
www.w3c.org/wai
. The WAI stands for web accessibility initiative.

Re: Clickable

2009-09-07 Thread Chris Hofstader

Hi,

Another thought: You say that you are navigating by text block
which may report clickable if anything in the block indeed has the
clickable property. You may want to navigate in smaller chunks so as
to find out which word/words have the clickable property.

I haven't had any problems with this at all. Those things that VO has

though is that if you use groups mode, you may actually have to
interact with the clickable text to be able to click on it. In my
experience, the clickable things have worked better than it did on the
PC with various screen readers where you had to route the mouse to the
virtual cursor in order to actually click on the clickable object.
As a slightly off-topic question sprung out of curiosity, i wonder how
those clickables are made in html/javascript whatever?

Re: Clickable

2009-09-05 Thread Krister Ekstrom

I think it's a wonderful thing that it says clickable. This means
that VO in fact recognizes those kinds of new links that don't look
like links. It had trouble with this in Leopard.

 Hello,

Snow Leopard is great and sure am glad it is up and running on my
computer. When I get on the internet now I keep hearing the word
clickable at the end of lines. Any ideas how I can get rid of this.
 It gets annoying after awhile.

 Thanks
 Steve

If it says clickable, it's flagged that way in the code.

Re: Clickable

Hello,

Then explain to me why when I first installed Snow Leopard I had one
page with clickable after almost every line and now they have all
disappeared?
