MI ANN: INGR GIS/Mapping email discussion
Hello list, Since many MI users often struggle with Intergraph formatted data translation issues, this new resource is likely a good source for answers to your questions. Intergraph GIS/Mapping email discussion list announced Ever since we attended IGUG earlier this year in Huntsville, Alabama, The GeoCommunity has become a popular bookmark for Intergraph GIS/Mapping product users. In order to provide this user community with useful resources, we're pleased to announce the formation of a new email based discussion list... INGRLIST. To subscribe simply send a blank email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] You will then be sent some simple instructions and a detailed description of the list. Subscribers are encouraged to use the list to discuss anything they think will be of interest to the Intergraph GIS/Mapping user Community including CAD, GIS and geospatial technology news, events, data and software issues relating to Intergraph GIS products including GeoMedia, GeoMedia Pro, GeoMedia WebMap, GeoMedia Web Enterprise, MFworks, and MGE mapping products. In the future, if a particular subject area becomes very popular (ie. GeoMedia WebMap focussed discussions) then a separate, more focussed discussion lists may be spun-off. The list is not moderated and will not be used as a commercial forum. The list will be managed and maintained by GeoComm International. Subscribers email addresses will never be used for any other purpose or redistributed. Once again welcome, hopefully this list will grow to become a valuable source of information and a respected knowledge base to the entire Intergraph GIS/Mapping Community. Of course, industry gossip and informational tidbits focussed on Intergraph's GIS/Mapping initiatives are always welcomed :-) The GeoCommunity will maintain the list, however, it will be driven and guided by you, the Intergraph GIS/Mapping user community. Note, an on-line archive of the lists contents will be made available in the near future. Mats, I happily stand corrected. You are right about the graphic select tool, I had been looking for it and neglected to try the text select tool hold-down. Now that I know it is there, I can see the small black triangle in the corner of the Text Select Icon indicating the flyout nature of the button. Thanks for pointing it out. I for one was in need of it. What version of Acrobat Reader are you using. I have Acrobat 4.0 and Acrobat Reader 4.0 and both seem to be missing any way of selecting graphics. MI USGS 100k DLG files Help!
I am trying to figure out files in the USGS data download section. DLG files 100k scale. The files with names like (1431479_TR_sdts_tar.gz) . . . no problem. But what do I do with a file that has (opt) in the name? Example, in the 100k California Stockton folder under transportation there is a large file, I know what that one is and how to unzip it. But there are several other files that break down transportation into categories, which would be more convenient. These have names like, 528163_RR_opt.gz. I just need to know how to unlock them. Second problem, I have noticed that several of the line files, versus the polygon files, seem to be unstable or corrupt when trying to use them in MapInfo.I don't know if the main file is corrupt or if it becomes corrupt after running it through the sdts2mi program. Anyone else notice this problem? Re: MI USGS 1:250,000 DEM file downloads and unziping...
Thanks to all, In case anyone else was wondering what the solution to this problem was. MI USGS 1:250,000 DEM file downloads and unziping...
I am trying to download the 1:250,000 DEM files on a Win NT 4.0 machine. I am trying to use WINzip to extract them. I have tried the compressed and uncompressed files. When I try to extract it, it asks for a file extension for the file. I tried giving it a zip extension and the message is "Cannot open file. It does not appear to be a valid archive." I have tried several files with the same message, so I know it isn't the download. Trying to open the uncompressed gz file with winzip give me the message "Error reading header after processing 0 entries" What is the trick here? I tried going to gzip.org, the FAQ's said if you are using a Windows machine to use Winzip to extract a gz file. I have no trouble downloading and extracting the 1:24,000 files. But the 1:250,000 files have me stymied. Thank you for any help you can give me. MI Merging DEM or SDTS files
Hi, I am new to this list and to MapInfo. I was wondering if anyone has come across a utility that will combine multiple USGS DEM files into a single file. I have been experimenting with the MapInfo tool called DEM to grid, and while it works fine, when placing multiple grids into a single workspace, there are lines and artifacts at the borders that are not presentable in a finished map. I know ArcInfo's Imagegrid has a merge function that does this, but I don't have access to this program. Has anyone come across such a utility? Re: MI Best GIS
I want to add my 2 cents worth by pointing out that Intergraph will commence shipping GeoMedia 4.0 next month. Look for a very simple to use, easily web enabled desktop GIS that will be competitively priced to battle it out with MI and AV. Everything I've seen so far indicates that this is a very slick product that we'll be hearing lots more about in the future. Keep in mind that Intergraph is committed to software development and solutions, so much so that they are getting out of the hardware business. For those wanting more info you can get some detailed product info in a section that we've dedictaed to information we gathered at the latest Intergraph users conference (IGUG), held last week in Huntsville, AL. http://www.spatialnews.com/igug2000/ Regards Glenn Ian Allan wrote: > Hi Shepherd > > You're going through the same dilemna that many of us must continually go > through. MI News: First Digital Three-D Map of the World
We've followed up on the latest accomplishments of the Space Shuttle Endeavour with some first glances at imagery and an explanation of the mission and the problems encountered with the thruster. Feb. 14, (10:30 PM EST)- Spatialnews.com is pleased to announce that our Exclusive - "A Sneak Peek at the First Digital Three-D Map of the World" is now available for viewing. http://www.spatialnews.com/features/shuttle/ We have reports from our space correspondent with details on the malfunctioning thruster. While the troubleshooting of the thruster goes on the mapping of the world continues. By the third day of the mission the amount of the world mapped in three dimensions had tripled. The world map won't be available for another two years but there are a few 'sneak peek' images. Re: MI Topography Mapping Mission
I'll keep you informed re: access to data from the mission. BTW: We just added an exclusive look at the commencement of data gathereing, offered by our space reporter located in Cape Canaveral. The article is located at http://www.spatialnews.com/features/shuttle/earthnews1.html Apparently there is still some discussion regarding who will be the official custodians of the resulting DEM data - it will likely be the USGS but that's not confirmed yet - I guess everything will wind up in SDTS format (I'm sure all the users out there will love that!) if the USGS controls the data. We get numerous requests every day regarding SDTS translation! Regardsless, the data will be available from the EROS website. Cost?? Regards Glenn Don't hesitate to contact me for more details. Re: SDTS to MIF or TAB translator
Tim, This is something that I definitely want to look further into as well. It seems that going from SDTS to MIf is a common problem. Some quick solutions (although likely not possible for you) would be to import directly using ArcInfo (or get someone to do it for you). There are several commercial translators available (FME for example) that you mentioned. I've found a few references that you may wish to consult, unless you already have. http://rmmcweb.cr.usgs.gov/public/outreach/dlginav.html http://www.fws.gov/data/gisconv/sdtsovr.html http://www.primenet.com/~piersen/arcview/convert.htm http://www.fws.gov/data/gisconv/dlgtools.html http://mcmcweb.er.usgs.gov/sdts/standard.html MFworks at http://www.thinkspace.com/ts3translate.html I'll look into this some more and let you know if I find anything Regards Glenn Tim Warman wrote: > I'm having a more than frustrating time converting some SDTS files into > something MI understands.
