MD: That little #$%^#!'N Battery Case

2000-03-03 Thread James Caran

Greetings all,
I am the owner of a wonderful little MZR-55, and I recently had a
bag stolen (Ok, I left it in macy's and someone stole it...) :)
The bag contained some of my minidisk accessories (Thank god I had
my recorder in my pocket.) Most of it I have since replaced, with the
exception of the great little plastic battery case that sony includes with
the unit. This allows a AA backup when the rechargable goes dead, which
is incredibly useful when I am recording since it burns batteries like
crazy. I called sony and they wanted an outrageous amount of cash for it,
I was expecting around $20 bucks, and I believe it was somewhere in the
fifty range. We're talking about a little piece of molded plastic with
two terminals and a screw...
Does anyone know where a replacement can be found cheaply? I just
can't in good faith give them that much for such an uncomplex and
inexpensive thing. If there is not other way, I'm considering trying to
make one myself, so I would appreciate any advice on that for the more
technically endowed out there. Thanks for any advice.

Thinking about how companies know when they gotcha,

-=James

Re: MD: Micro keyboard for titling

2000-03-03 Thread Ralph Smeets

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

There is your answer ... MD connected to a Palm Pilot

I have a Palm III and various MD equipment. At this point, the *only*
common connection is IR, specifically, the Palm with send/receive IR and my
JE520 and MDS-PC2 will receive it. The Palm will send/receive RS232 and,
with the addition of the CAV-50C RS232/Slink interface, so will the MDS-PC2.
But I think it would be better to concentrate on the portables, rather than
 these home-type decks.

Hmm,

I don't know... The IR interface is sort of 'standard'. I mean, the remote
control
code of manufacturers haven't changed a lot. The SLink/A-Control interface found
on
Sony home-decks is Sony's 'standard' sollution for connecting it to a PC.

These 'sollutions' are somehow standard.

I think the best solution for *existing* portable MD would be a cable that
connected the RS232 hotsync on the Palm to the 4-pin remote connector on the
MD. Two of the 4 pins are control, which is normally implemented by a
resistor ladder and pushbuttons, but I've seen PC interfaces that use CMOS
analog switches. The other two are data from the MD to the LCD (or the
label printer). Looks like an opportunity to use a PIC single-chip
 microprocessor to make the connection.

I'm not sure... Not all of the portable's functions are 'remote-controllable'.
Note also that some of the manufacturers like to change the protocol for the
remote from model to model. Giving a wide range of different types of remotes!

I'm sure that it would be possible to write a Palm program similar to the PC
program Sony supplies with the MDs-PC2. Might make me think of replacing my
MZ-EP11 player with a portable recorder!

Give it a try ;-)

Cheers,

BTW... I've looked at other portables as possible replacements for my R50
for this very reason. But all of them, even the new Sony's, seem to have
various usability drawbacks when compared to it. For example, the jog
dial is WONDERFUL. I also love how easy the R50 makes it to mark and
unmark tracks (push a button and you're done).

If Sony made a version of the R50 that had the following modifications, I
would buy one YESTERDAY and tell my friends that they should buy one too:

-- the R90's battery life (actually, the R50's form factor should
   allow a longer life)
 -- a backlit display
-- an "automatic" end search when recording
-- the ability to start playing from the beginning without having
   to use the jog dial
-- without cutting the performance (such as the R90's less precise
track marking or slower startup times)
-- slightly lighter (It doesn't have to be smaller, although slimmer
might be possible if they're very, very careful about it.)

I don't know what Sony's up to, but since 'The Others' (Sharp and Aiwa) have
copyied their jog-dial they seem to started abandoning 'The Jog'.

'The Rest' brings out new portables while they add features (smaller, battery
live, jog-dial), but Sony.

Cheers,
Ralph - Who think's that Sony made very good MD portables until the MZ-R55. At
the moment
they put out the MZ-R55 they lost contact with the real world!

Yes! I *hate* this. Add to it the fact that when I'm on the last song, I
can't hit "forward" to go to track #1 -- I have to jog/skip all the way
to the beginning or open the door and close it again.

Hmm, AFAIK, the 702 does this. Ie, you can hit "forward" on the last track to go
to
track #1.

My 7900R car-head has the same behauviour as the portables..

 I'll also add:

 - Get a better remote! The Sony "stick" is the stupidest remote I've ever
used. In order to skip tracks, you have to turn the little knob at the
end, but to do that with one hand is difficult without hitting the stop
button embedded in the knob. The Sharp, Aiwa and Kenwood remotes I've
seen are all much, much better.

Don't know, I've got a 702 and I don't like the looks of the remote. It's easy
to control one-handed however. Sony's stick remote looks cool, but

 - Implement an insert/eject mechanism like the Sharp 700-series. The
floppy-style is better in every way: less flimsy, less prone to breakage,
 easier to eject/insert when in a pocket/bag.

It makes the unit thicker... But I like it. I don't know if it is less flimsy or
less prone to breakage, but I feel that Sony should give the customer a choice.
Do like Sharp and provide all units 'double', Ie, one with clam-shell and one
with slot-in. (7xx vs 8xx serie).

Cheers,
Ralph

MD: Titling problem suggestion

2000-03-03 Thread bob_

Hello.
i read your thought and suggestions about the time consuming titling
problem.
even with the Jog dial it's a hassle.
what i suggest is for them to spring some extra button(about 4 i think)
and do it like the do for SMS messages in cell phones where:
1- ABC
2 - DEF
3 - GHI
4 -
etc.
a long press changes it from Capital to small and there's one button for
space, one for symbols(!,.()-=+\...) and one last to close the titling
sessions.
the buttons are all multi=usables and when finished with titling will become
the regular playback and function buttons.

Just a though, write back.

Re: MD: Real producer files

2000-03-03 Thread Magic

Take a look at www.page-arcanum.co.uk - a very small-scale site I recently
designed. The music section there sounds like what you are looking to
produce. Linking the files so they stream (preferred method) is done as
follows.

Encode the audio to a 'rm' file. It's best if you do this at about 16kbps so
that modem users can listen to it too.
Make a 'ram' file in notepad which contains the full URL of where the file
is.
ie, you wouldn't put "music/tune.rm" in the file, you would put
'http://www.mattnet.freeserve.co.uk/music/tune.rm' instead (without quotes)
and save the file. All a ram file is, is a pointer to where the actual music
file is. You put a standard link to the ram file on your HTML pages like
this
A HREF="music/tune.ram"Click here for my tune/A

Hope this helps!

I'm not sure... Not all of the portable's functions are
'remote-controllable'.
Note also that some of the manufacturers like to change the protocol for
the
remote from model to model. Giving a wide range of different types of
remotes!

The only function I can't get to work is
"Display" - this seems to be linked to timing signals on the LCD display
rather than just a resistor ladder affair. The MD registers the pressing if
DISPLAY becase it works when titling, but ignores it when trying to display
remaining time etc. unless I use the Sony remote.

"End Search" - It's there somewhere but I don't know where.

"Record" functions differently in that it goes into Record-Pause when
selected via the remote interface rather than straight record, IMHO this is
better anyway!

I've bought about 20 of these discs. They aren't the prettiest and they
aren't the sturdiest but I've abused these discs more than my nicer TDK
and Sonys (I use those for "archival" recording) because they're the discs
that get re-recorded over and over, tossed around my car, dropped on the

MD: Sony USB 2nd try?

Hi all,
has anyone read the second announcement of the USB interface for recording
computer audio to MD? Here's a clip from the article:

The Plug Play interface easily connects through the primary USB port of
a PC, eliminating the need to open the computer or connect to a sound card
while delivering superior audio performance with the high quality
digital-to-analog converter called the PCLink

Sounds cryptic to me. I wonder if the interface is gonna be totally digital
or the PC link is gonna have a DAC in between, resulting in a semi-digital
(until the signal hits the PClink DAC)transfer?

Any ideas?

Plug in power means the recorder will provide a small voltage to power

Reading this one made me think of something that I often do in meetings.
Since i own a small contracting firm i often record the meetings that I go

Anyway that's not the point, I only use the "Hello Kitty" MD's for doing
this, not because they are good MD's, but i'd say about 95% of the time it
really pisses someone off in the room big time that I am using something

MD: MZ-R50 MIC SENS switch and R55 tips

2000-03-03 Thread Mike Ward

I've owned an MZ-R50 for some time now, but my employer (a Northern
California news/talk radio station) just gave me an MZ-R55 for work use as
well. Any tips on the 55 vs. the 50? I know the battery life is low on the
55 and it doesn't have a jog dial...

And I was getting tired of friction forcing down the "MIC SENS" switch on
the 50 into "low". I NEVER NEED LOW SENSITIVITY! ;) It has bitten me in
the you-know-where more than once... where I get audio that's hard to dub
out of the MD since the volume is so low.

So... I decided to try to pop the switch. What harm could I do, right?
Boy, that was a dumb thing to do. I took a small, flat screwdriver and put
it under the MIC SENS switch. And POP! It came off...but left only bare
circuit board showing through the hole that now existed.

Bottom line - I had to take the entire unit apart...find the small
microswitch inside for MIC SENS, and flip it to HIGH, then put it back
together again. Taking apart the R50 is no quick feat - there's something
like 8 or 9 tiny screws that all have to be removed. But once I figured it
out, it was fine. I used some silver-colored tape to tape over the MIC SENS
hole and I'm back in business.

I know the R55 has a similar switch, but I'M NOT TOUCHING IT! ;)

Just take some duct tape and cut a small piece of it and put it over
the switch and it will stay where you want it. Besides, you can remove
the tape anytime you want and change it. The silver of the tape will
blend with the recorder. Alternately, you can use some scotch tape and
do the same thing.

MD: R50 remote

2000-03-03 Thread John Park

Hi. I'm looking for Sony RM-MZE1 Remote Control. I saw one at minidiscnow.com
and minidiscweb.com. Both sell for around $50-$55.
However, I know a friend who had bad experience with minidiscnow.com and plus
it takes over 20 to 40 days to deliever. Does anyone know about
minidiscweb.com? They don't have e-mail address or information on how long it
would take for them to deliever the remote.
Help me please.

I wonder if I can get some of those Hello Kitty disks locally?

Matt Wall wrote:

Reading this one made me think of something that I often do in meetings.
Since i own a small contracting firm i often record the meetings that I go
to and make it common notice so that nobody can say you didn't warn me.
Anyway that's not the point, I only use the "Hello Kitty" MD's for doing
this, not because they are good MD's, but i'd say about 95% of the time it
really pisses someone off in the room big time that I am using something
that is considered cute and a novelty in a serious situtation. I find this
a good way to tell who's really uptight in meetings and who can take a joke.

Re: MD: Sony's new Internet Audio Recording Interface

2000-03-03 Thread Timothy P. Stockman

 Is S/PDIF hard to generate?

Computer audio chips tend to send/receive it right with pins on the main
sound chip and CD/MD equipment also tends to have it integrated at the chip
level (this is the most economical way to do it). So my guess is that it's
no big deal, if Sony has designed a special chip. Alternatively, Crystal
Semiconductor makes generic S/PDIF transmitter receiver chips.

Make it run at a special 4X or 8x S/PDIF rate, so that a portable
MD player could compete in downloading convenience with an MP3
  player.

4X is no big deal if Sony designs their own chips (both in the interface and
the MD). So far as I know, the highest speed that the Crystal chips run at
is 96K (there's not a big market for higher speed yet), which would at least
handle the 88.2K rate for 2X transfer. I think the fastest USB transfer
rate would limit things to 4X or so...

I'm hoping that the USB - MD interface is so successful that Sony starts
putting it into new recorders at the chip level. That would allow them to
produce USB-enabled MD recorders for little more than the price of the USB
connector! If they did it at the chip level, maybe they could (in the
future) revive MD data, so you could make the MD recorder do double duty.
(Although MD data disks are expensive right now, its only because the market
is extremely small compared to the audio market. If there was a large base
of MD data equipment; they price would come down. As a matter of fact,
since there's no "SCMS tax" on data disks, it could go even lower!)

MD: Sharp 702 skipping

I am sure some of you have had this problem, and I am unable to search the
 archives, so here goes:

My Sharp 702 has recently started skipping. It will work fine for a
while, and then just start dropping out and skipping. Sometimes stopping
and starting again fixes it, but often an eject is all that works. I have
also begun to get on occasion the dreaded UTOC ERROR, but feeding another
readable disc in and then putting the error disc in usually fixes it.

This stinks. I use my sharp for a lot of live recording and I have no
idea whether this effects recording (it hasn't yet).

How do I get it to stop skipping? Thanks.

MD: Ken Pohlmann Principles of Digital Audio 4th ed...

2000-03-03 Thread Timothy P. Stockman

"Priciples of Digital Audio - 4th", considered by many to be the "bible" of
digital audio theory, is now available. My copy, which was pre-ordered at
BN.com, arrived yesterday. The latest edition is up to 736 pages, and
contains an entire chapter on MD, as well as chapters for CD, DAT, DVD, PC
audio and digital broadcasting. I've not had a chance for detailed reading
yet, but it seems to bring together a *lot* of basic theory together in one
place. Maybe not enough to actually build the devices it talks about, but
certainly plenty of information to conduct an intellegent conversation with
those who do build the stuff.

All in all, a great reference book!

MD: Apex DVD/CDR/CDRW/MP3 Player

I am an avid fan of the ZDTV an they have been pushing a new DVD player that
offers some very interesting features. So while kicking around my Circuit
City Store here in Phx, AZ I noticed that they had the Apex DVD player on
sale for $179. I thought I would give it a try, and man what a deal!
Forget the DVD portion, here is what is cool, NO SCMS! Yes, you heard me
correctly. It plays CDR's RW's and will decode MP3's. It also alows you to
play DVD's from any region code and has component video out to boot! It is
not a quality piece, but it has some very cool features. Just wanted to let
you know.

Oh well, same effect.

I bought one and for a cheep unit it is great. ( Wounder how lon it will be
before they are forced to take it off the market because of mp3s or getting
by copy protections.)

Here is a FAQ on the unit
