MD: Sharp 722's battery life
I've got a Sharp 722. It is said to have an autonomy of about ten hours in plays mode and 8 when you record. But I have the impression that the real autonomy is inferior to what is claimed by Sharp. How do they measure the autonomy? At which volume and which bass level (0, 1, 2, 3)? I always listen music at volume 8 and bass level 3? So, is it 10 hours of playback maximum or is my battery to be changed? - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well, yes, you need some electricity. it's clear to me that different CD players are "tuned" differently, e.g. sony's seem to have a lot of clarity in ... so the differences must relate to build, transport and D/A converter. Forget the transport. All I can say is trust your ears and listen before you buy! Re: MD: Sharp 722's battery life
Sharp's news releases state the following: battery life Recording - measured with playback volume at 0, analog input playback - measured with playback volume at 15. On Sharp portables, volume directly relates to power consumption. I've read a MD player battery life test in a magazine last year, with everything played at full volume. The Sharp 531 (and the Sony E95 too) turned in results that's more than 1 hour less, while most other players stuck to the official figures. I've heard from owners of other Sharp models that turning bass boost off extends battery life. Not very much, just enough to be obvious at the point where the unit cuts off automatically. Also, the battery life gradually decreases over its lifetime - not because of memory effect, but simply because it's moving towards the eventual "death". The 831 manual says that if the battery gives only half of what it provided when brand new, it should be replaced. Leon I've got a Sharp 722. Re: MD: Sony MZ-R90 shock resistance, anecdotal report
I don't know if all 831s are built alike, but this happens to mine. If I place it in my pocket, so that the pickup is moving up-down, it skips very easily, and takes awfully long to recover. Often there's a noise that follows this - as if the pickup fell down the worm gear all the way to one end of its travel. This has never happened with any other of my portables. Panasonics do this if I shake them utterly violently, but I haven't "heard" the same cases anywhere. The 831 is as good as any other modern portable if I place it in a different orientation, i.e. so that the pickup travels left-right. Thought I'd share :) Leon Hi, I have used an MZ-R90 and MZ-R50 in the same pocket of the same shorts on the same exercize machine (Nordic track). The MZ-R50 was in use for over a year and never once skipped. The MZ-R90 has been in use for the last month and has skipped (muted actually) at least 3 times. Perhaps one could argue that the MZ-R90 is smaller and shifts into a more skip prone position in my pocket ... but I think a more likely answer is that the MZ-R90 sacrifices some shock resistance for battery life. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MD: Sony MD changer in car on non Sony head unit
Does anyone know if: 1) Sony changers (MD/CD) uni-link can be adapter-converted to work with other manufacturer HU for cheap ? Yeah - there are a few ways to do this.. There is a rather "expensive" box that was designed for use to adapt early Sony chagners to non changer equipped head unit (Sony or otherwise). It has a unit link cable to connect to the changer, power cables for input, RCA cables for input and output and antenna connector "T" so you can use it as an "RF" type unit if you want. I used to use it with a Sony head unit that did not have changer controls. It works with a wireless rempte and has a "large" DIN sizex face panel that can be flush mounted (If I still have the bracket) or palced "aside". Unlike others, there are NO controls on the remote dispaly unit - you have to use teh wireless remote. The other way is to get a "broken" RF unilink changer and scaenvge the appropriate parts. Id be willing to part with thr unilink controller *if* I can find all the parts that make it work. Indirectly true. The R90 has a new, smaller, lower power draw mechanism than the R50, or in fact anything else previously extant. This new mechanism appears to be more prone to shock-induced skipping than the previous mechanism. -- Rat [EMAIL PROTECTED]\ Ingredients of Happy Fun Ball include an Minion of Nathan - Nathan says Hi! \ unknown glowing substance which fell to PGP Key: at a key server near you! \ Earth, presumably from outer space. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

MD: amps with digital in/out
Thought I would add this to the discussion: The amps with digital I/O that are available now are analog amplifiers with built-in D/A convertors. Some of the high-end models use DSP for level, tone/equalization, reverb, etc, but all eventually convert the signal to analog and pass it through an analog power amp. However, there are several companies that are close to changing that! They use a DSP to convert the incoming signal to bi-level or tri-level pulse-width modulated. The PWM signal switches high voltage (100V), high current MOSFETs. The output of the MOSFETs goes through a passive low-pass filter and then directly to the speakers. A neat approach, because the signal remains in the digital domain until the last moment... - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: MD: Sharp
You have to use your rechargeable battery. For the external battery case and which type of battery is allowed, you'd better check your user manual for details. But I'd say that the use of rechargeable AA batteries isn't recommended. I may be wrong but that's what I think. Re: MD: Sharp
You can use regular rechargeable, but you probably can't charge them inside the unit. Rechargeable battery packs usually have additional connections, inside the packaging/wrapping, that connect the internal terminals and the charging unit. Rick Take yer headphones off!! :-) And then listen to the R90. You'll hear that about every thirty seconds, it spins up to read in a blorf of data from the disc and then shuts down again. In other words, it's using ~30 seconds of that 40 second "anti-shock buffer" as a simple data buffer to extend battery life. In reality, the R90 has a minimum of about 10 seconds of shock memory. Re: MD: End Search
I have a question for Windoze gurus. Can I turn off file locking on a file? On occasion, I'd love to start playing the files I record before the recording is finished but the file is locked until the recording is finished. As far as I know this cannot be done ... it's all down to the software that's doing the recording. It's easy easy easy to write an application that can just create a file and write into it such that other applications are still able to load it. If you can't start playing the file, because it's still being recorded into, then I guess they didn't write their application very well. But as far as I know there's nothing you can do about it, except maybe petition them to enable shared-read access to the file ... dave - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

would the "expensive box" work the other way around? i.e. could you connect the changer control cable coming from a Sony head-unit which DOES have changer capability to the box and in turn connect the box to a cable with RCAs leading to a 3.5 mm plug - allowing you to hook an MD/CD portable in through the box and to listen to the portable through the car stereo (via the changer controls)?? richard -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, 17 May 2000 01:54 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: WZ Subject: MD: Sony MD changer in car on non Sony head unit Does anyone know if: 1) Sony changers (MD/CD) uni-link can be adapter-converted to work with other manufacturer HU for cheap ? MD: Sony R5-ST
Hi, I caught your post on the md-l and wanted to ask what your thoughts on the R5-ST are. I've been thinking about getting a deck for doing md-md dubbing, but haven't been able to find much info about the r5-st to save my life. Besides the ability to undock the unit and go portable, is there any other feature that's not found in regular md deck? On Sat, 13 May 2000, User wrote: occasionally have to conceal my gear. I own a Sony R5-St (the portable that mounts to a station) and I take the portable unit and plug in a dummy pair I posted a message concerning stealth recording and as a result of my mention of my Sony R5-ST, I recieved several inquiries concerning my opinions on the unit. So I'm posting my review to the list for everyone. Most of the info I got for the R5-ST when I was going to buy it came from the minidisc.org page and the links from the product overview. The main advantages are the 20 bit recordings that brings the audio quality much closer to a CD. The station is small - roughly the size of 10 CD cases stacked flat in 2 piles of 5 (I measured...) The portable pops out from under the clamshell, backlit LCD and mechanically is similar to the R-50. It also comes with a Li-Ion and an add-on AA pack for the port that, combined covers my 1 hour in - 1 hour out subway commute all week without a recharge or replacement, in addition the Li-Ion does not have to be removed from the portable when it docks, it can recharge in the unit or it can be removed and put in a side compartment in the station where it will also recharge. so you can charge 2 batts at once. Also, it has two TOSLINK inputs (switchable) one TOSLINK output, RCA I/O, and while playing, all outputs are hot - meaning while you are playing or recording on the station, sound is being sent to the 1/4" headphones on the station, the 1/8" on the remote for the portable, the RCA out, and the TOSLINK out. This feature was very cool during my very brief stint as electrionic composer. I could loop samples and tracks on MD to analog pedals, my Mac, or whatever my heart desired. The one disadvantage pertains to the station's power usage. It takes 1.2amps at 9volts DC. This is supplied by a 100v AC bulky transformer power supply that is nearly as large as the entire unit and weighs more than the whole station! To make matters worse, to use this unit with US currents, the 100v in requires an additional wall-wart adapter! I also have been unsuccessful in locating a rechargeable battery to power the station for a couple of hours - smaller than a lead acid or car battery, ( which, incedentally, isn't much heavier than the power supply.) The other problem you are going to have with the R5 is finding it. I think it was discontinued. I haven't seen it in a year and when I bought it from Japan in Dec 98 it wasn't available in the US. I know minidiscnow.com had them when I was shopping for it, but according to this MD list, they are out of business - good riddance. It took three months for them to send me a special MD head cleaner for the R5 as I found the unit could not be used with standard MD head cleaners. I hope this answers the all the questions some of you had about the R5 - - - Aqualangs. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
