I have some for my Sony R30 that are about three years old and they
still work ok. I have some for my Texas Instrument Laptop that are 4
years old and they died.

 I know one thing, most
rechargeable batteries don't hold the charge very long if they are sitting
 around.
Nicads and NiMH will self discharge over a few weeks. LiIon take a lot
longer to self discharge.

And why can't they make a 1.5 volt NiMH or Ni Cad instead of only
 1.2?

I think it has to do with the chemistry and physics of batteries. Lead
acid storage batteries (lead Antimony), like the ones that are used in
cars have a voltage of around 2.2 volts. The waterless ones are
lead-calcium, and they have a slightly different terminal voltage and a
lesser tolerence of charging voltage. LiIon have a terminal voltage of
around 3 volts if I remember correctly.

nbsp; Surprisingly, although their shelf life is great, Alkalines
 stink in digital cameras.

Their discharge charicteristic is different because of higher internal
resistance. I suspect that is the problem. I used them as a back up
because I can buy a pack in the local gas station or 7/11. I usually
carry an extra set of rechargable NiMh in my camera bag, but I've had to
resort to buying alkalines in a pinch.

Do other people find engine noise problems if they connect their
portable to the cigarette lighter adapter?

There are noise eliminators that you can install on the wire that goes
to the cigarette lighter socket and maybe on the alternator. resistor
type sparkplugs and wiring help too. Clean your battery terminals. The
car battery acts as a filter for the electrical system. A bad battery
or bad connections can cause noise, as can a bad alternator, the
ingition system and even the engine controller. It's been a while since
I had to look into this problem though. The last car I had problems
with didn't even have a computerized engine controller, so you can see
it was a long time ago.

nbsp; I have found this on every
single MD and CD player I have tried.nbsp; And in every car too.//tt
pttI always use an AA battery pack rather than the AC adapter.

Get one of those ferrite doughnut chokes that are used on the cables
leaving some computers, and run the wire through it a couple of times.

YOu gotta get rid of that html crap in your posts though...sure is hard
to read.

MD: Sony earbuds.

2000-10-16 Thread Robin Landy

I want to buy some new earphones for my sharp 831. I'm interested in
the Sony 268s, but I've heard that they 'don't work' with remote
controls. Is this true? (I don't really see how this can be, but that
is what is says in the Index catalogue).
If the Sony 268 are no good, does anyone have any suggestions for
good ear-buds costing less than 50 UK pounds. I would prefer a full
length cord (since I like to clip the remote quite low down, eg on my
belt, so that it is invisible)
Cheers

2000-10-16 Thread Leon

Hi,

The 268 does work with remote controls.

The cord that comes out of the cheaper 238 is about 0.4m long, and has
Sony's "micro-plug". It comes with a 1m extension cord that has a normal
miniplug. The 268 should have either that, or the normal cords.

As many others, I would not suggest any Sony earbuds with "groove". The 848
and 868 aren't that much more expensive.

Leon

P.S. I like to clip my remote low down, too. I don't understand the deal
with 0.4m short cords - if your shirt has no pocket, it's not that
convenient anymore.

Koss KSC-35 sound better than Sony's best earbuds (MD-888-LP), and cost
about half as much or a little less. And uses standard 1/8" stereo plug.

As for the 268s "not working", I do not see how that could be, as the
remote plugs directly into the recorder, and the phones plug into the
remote.

MD: Digital output on portable Mini Disc plauyers

2000-10-16 Thread las

When I bought my Sony MZ-1 in 1992 or something like that, it was by today's standards,
big and heavy. It had no remote, but it did have a numeric keypad and a DIGITAL
OPTICAL
OUTPUT!!!

Why did all of the manufactures universally discontinue including a digital optical
output on their portables? Now if you say, "to save money", that is a reasonable (to
he
manufacture, not he customer who has been paying outrageous prices for portable
recorders
for years) answer.

But if you say to avoid making copies, we all know that isn't true because all of the
MD
decks have digital outputs.

Because of SCMS, the digital output had a limited use until now. But now more and more
receivers are including digital inputs. My theory is that the longer you can kept the
"chain" digital, the better the fidelity.

CD players have been available (on higher end portables only-I haven't seen any at
Wal-Mart) with digital out.

MD: Sony MZ-E33 Batteries?

2000-10-16 Thread Chris Moore

I have a question for you all.

I purchased the new Sony MD Bundle they have out now that comes with the
JE-330 deck as well as the MZ-E33 MD walkman. I use the walkman an awful lot
because it's little enough to fit in my pocket easily, and consequently I go
through a lot of AA batteries.

I have heard that Sony sells special NiMh batteries for their walkmans and
AC adapters that simply allow you to recharge them..is this true? If so
where could I purchase a rechargeable battery and adapter so I can quit
running up my bill at Wal-Mart buying AA batteries? :)

Re: MD: Sony MZ-E33 Batteries?

2000-10-16 Thread las

Don't through out your money on Sony batteries. Buy Rayovacs at Wal-Mart. A 4
pack cost about $10.

If your player allows you to recharge them in the unit, you will probably have
to strip about a half inch of the bottom of the label off of the battery. The
screw you Sony batteries usually set it up so that they have a third contact for
charging which makes contact with the lower eighth of the battery.

I use a Radio Shack one hour NiMH charger. They cost about $30 for the one hour
model (slower ones are less). You can also by a Ravovac charger. Cheap, but
slow.

Sam's club had a set of AA AAA and a charger (Energizer brand) batteries on sale
the last time I was in. I think the entire set was bout $25 dollars.

Why not Sony?? First, hard to find. Second, you will probably pay $10 to $20
for each battery!!

Radio Shack sells them too, but their price is too high. The Sony's claim (on
the label) to be 1400 mAh. The Rayovacs used to say 1200, but the new ones say
1300. I think that they are all about the same. They are just playing games
with the numbers.

RE: MD: Sony MZ-E33 Batteries?

2000-10-16 Thread Richard Lang

Chris,

I have the Sony E25 portable player (I got it bundled with a deck too),
which also takes a single AA battery. I usually use Ni-cd rechargeable AAs
with it. I've had a separate (generic commercially available) AA battery
charger for yonks, and it charges 2 AAs at a time so I have 3 or 4 AAs for
the E25 and run them in shifts (I usually have a standard non-rechargeable
AA on me somewhere in case the rechargeable dies to/from work - I just can't
stand biking in silence!). That way there's always a fresh battery to hand
and they always get drained and charged fully that way.

I don't see why you'd use non-rechargeables except in an emergency - once
you've spent the initial outlay (a charger and a few batteries) you're
basically running your MD walkman free of cost (at least until you've
charged and drained all your AAs 1-2000 times each!)

The E25 can also take a "Gumpack" flat rechargeable battery, which goes in
the same place - the sides of the "cylinder" the AA battery goes in has
indents to accomodate the shape of a gumpack (I guess this is standard with
Sonys?). I don't know if it will accept the gumpack the R55/90 uses, the
one I've used with it is the gumpack I got with my tape walkman a couple of
years ago and I suspect it may be a Ni-cd (it's totally silver) rather than
the NiMh the R55 etc use. The walkman also came with a sony wall socket
recharger for this battery - similar to model BC-7SG (in NZ). I don't use
it much though - it gives less play time than an AA, rechargeable or
otherwise.

Hope this helps. Now if someone can only help me out with my Panasonic
MR-100 question!

Re: MD: MDLP in the U.S.

2000-10-16 Thread Leon

I'm guessing new Sony MDLP equipments will come out "on schedule", after the
same interval between any previous generations.

Sony will definitely play MDLP to their advantage, because so many others
aren't ready even in Japan. One would imagine Sharp has some form of ATRAC3
technology (since they're selling the e-musee, the headphone/memory stick
player), but they've had no MDLP equipment out. If Sharp is developing, I'd
imagine a February/March 2001 launch in Japan.

Matsushita may never touch MDLP, for they're using AAC in solid-state audio
against Sony's ATRAC3, and claiming that AAC is nearer to CD quality amongst
the "near-CD" compression algorithms. But only time will tell.

Leon

p.s. The new Sony memory stick walkman looks great.

Though I resisted the idea of MDLP at first, I am now beginning to
warm up to the idea. When will MDLP players and recorders be
available in America (they aren't already, are they?) -- or does
 anyone know?

MD: JVC's new portables

2000-10-16 Thread Leon

http://www.jvc-victor.co.jp/products/compo/XM-PX50.html

For a change, these two supports MDLP. :)

Quick facts:

XM-PX50
blue, orange, white; 29000 yen, to be launched Nov 21.
- recharging stand features an indicator that lights up when charging;
- polycarbonate body (same material as most CD portables)
- 21/23/26 hour play in SP/LP2/LP4 modes; doesn't support external
batteries.
- 76 x 17.4 x 81 mm, 74g without batteries.

XM-PX70
blue, pink, white; 35000 yen, to be launched Dec 11.
- monocoque construction. Lightest player at 57g (without batt.; until the
Panasonic MJ88 comes along)
- ATRAC DSP, digital bass boost, anti-shock combined on one LSI.

Featured on both units
- digital bass boost (Active Clear Bass)
- 7-step bass/treble control
- alarm
- train mode
- auto power-off and beep can be disabled
- repeat, random play (no program)
- in SP/LP2/LP4, 25/31/36 hour play on rech. batteries, 70/86/100 maximum.
- 71 x 14.6 x 78 mm

The XM-PX50 replaces the PX33 (the "casual" side of the range, according to
JVC), targeted at teenagers. The PX70 replaces the PX55 (the "high-spec"
model), and has slightly older target groups.

Seems that history is repeating itself: last year JVC announced the PX5,
which was the lightest, and then came the even lighter Panasonic. These
Matsushita companies probably timed the news releases between them, and made
a point to target different groups.

Why don't they lower the power requirements so that MD recorders can accept 2

First off, let me start by saying except for this list and a few emails,
I have never met Peter. I am not a French Canadian landsman of his or
anything like that. I just think that I have a pretty good idea where he
is coming from.

At times Peter may seem a little over enthusiastic and maybe even a
little pushy. But I believe that this stems from is sincere love for MD
and desire to make every effort to save people money.

Kheops Mini Disc is not something that Peter is depending on to make a
living. He is part of the Kheops Art Glass company. I have kept my
mouth quiet for a long time, but I have had some very negative
experiences with Mini Pisco.

Even though I have a great deal of respect for Eric Woudenberg, I was
very upset when he put their banner on the community page. I am really
holding back here. I'm simply going to leave it by saying Mini Disco and
I don't dance.

Peter may over do it a little. But when someone post an e mail stating
that Mini Pisco has the lowest price on such and such, and it just isn't
a fact, I think that someone has a duty to correct them. And also to
tell us were we can get a better deal.

If Peter had the connections in Japan, I think that his company would
have all of the best features of Nic Boyde (SP?), and MiniDisc NOW! with
none of the negatives.

If the distributors that MDN had would start their own website, you would
see the largest selection and lowest prices ever. Plus they stand behind
what they sell.

Unfortunately the main distributor is a very large, very Japanese
company. Although the sales manager in the MD department is receptive,
the owners are not interested in expanding to do business with the West.

They are old school Japan. They make large sums of money selling in
their own country and that's the way they are happy. It's our loss. But
there is nothing we can do. Getting Sawada Denki to set up a web site
was a big deal and a feather in Rick's cap.
