Re: MD: MP3s and Cost
Who would want to listen to MP3s anway. MD is so much more wonderful, and so much sexier. Well, I am certainly NOT a supporter of MP3, but it does have some nice perks, such as (1) being able to find foreign music without paying exorbatant prices, and (2) getting the music for free (honest or not, it's a perk). But then again, what few MP3s I get into are all foreign and all on MD. J. C. R. Re: MD: Discussions - Why?
People are just trying to talk about the pros and cons of minidisc vrs. other recording media. That is what this list as all about IMHO, to pose questions and get discussion on them. Frankly, I can see where the original poster was coming from. I left this for about a month due to e-mail-related problems. I'm back and people are still beginning discussions about Best Buy practically wiping out their MD products, the stupidity of the move, and the ignorant salespeople at Best Buy and Circuit City. Re: MD: MP3s and Cost
As much as I love my MDs, I think the reality is that this new technology (MP3 CDs) is gonna put the final nail in the coffin. I know many will argue about the re-recodability, the smaller size, the ease or portability, but for many the convenience of an MP3 CD player and the length of the music it can play will far outweigh those arguments... I think you make good points, but I don't think everybody will go for the MP3 CD. It undoubted has nice features, but don't forget that MD does too. With MDLP's LP2 mode, you get around 5 hours of music, I think. As long as it's not classical music or an original, as the sound quality isn't optimum, I think that's great also. I am planning to keep my MP3s on LP2 MDs once I get an MDLP recorder. This all goes back to my question: why can't MD and CD live together peacefully. Many people like MP3s but don't like or particular care for MP3 players. I think most would prefer to dump their music on an MD or a CD. I'm an MD guy. J. C. R. Re: MD: Best buy, phasing out MD equip ??
It is not, nor will it ever be, a replacement (or even serious competition) for CD portables. Why must it be? Why can't CD and MD just live side-by-side as siblings? Why can't stereos come standard with CD/MD features instead of CD/tape. Yes, a handful of stereos DO have CD/MD, but these are by far the minority and can be hard to find. This is so bloody ridiculous!! MD is far better than CD-R or CD-RW! Sorry. But here I cannot agree with you. How can a data compressed format possibly be superior to a properly dithered uncompressed digital recording? This statement just doesn't make sense. The original poster was perhaps a bit broad there. But one has to remember that the quality of a medium is not just its sound -- it's also cost, portability, features, et cetera. Generally, MD sounds, for all intents and purposes anywhere near the realm of normal usage, identical to CD. If I could, I would switch almost all of my CDs to MDs -- maybe all (and I do have some classical). I believe MD to sound indistinguishable to CDs for my usage, plus there are the standard MD features that are above CDs (e.g. the plastic casing, easy re-recordability, titling, size). For ME, "MD is far better than CD-R or CD-RW!" And probably for many other people. However, overall, there is no one clear winner. There ARE winners, though: CD and MD. J. C. R. RE: MD: What is Sony thinking?!?
chaulsr [EMAIL PROTECTED]: And last, personally I prefer MD. It's easy to record, I just snap in a CD and a MD then press several buttons. For MP3, I need to go through all those softwares and have to spare my computer. Agreed. I think that MP3 is far too computer-intensive. Granted, downloading MP3s is far easier if you have a power connection to the Internet instead of a dial-up, but I still feel it's just too much trouble for not enough quality. Jonathan C. R. ORIGINAL MESSAGE From: Liquid Review [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Friday, November 10, 2000 I use my portable unit for recording interviews, and then broadcast them off of it to air on radio... and no one's ever said it sounded anything but crystal clear. I am confused - who can set me straight? As others have mentioned, this person will most likely ill informed or part of an anti-MD faction (yes, we ARE at war). If MD was truly so inadequate, I would not wish for an all-MD music collection. Yes, technically, it may not be as good as CD; but there are incredibly few people that can audibly discern a difference between MD and CD. And even then, the differences are so subtle or inexact (e.g. MD is slightly brighter-sounding), who cares? Quality is very important to me, but MD suits all of my needs, and well! J. C. R. Re: MD: The proper use for MIni Discs
ORIGINAL MESSAGE From: las [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Sunday, October 22, 2000 MDs should not (in my humble opinion) be considered substitutes for CDs. Well, I agree in the large scope of things, but I would absolutely LOVE to trade all of my CDs for MDs of the same albums. As you stated, MDs are indistinguishable from CDs for most intents and purposes. I have a good sound system -- very good, I feel -- but I have no reason to cling to the absolute highest sound quality possible, whether audible or not. (As has been said before, some people probably can hear the differences, but with some, it's just in their heads.) I am picky about my sound quality, but MD sounds absolutely fantastic to me. MD: Happy Days Are Here Again!
Some of you might remember that my faithful Sony MDS-JE510 died a few months ago. Since then, I've been trying to use my R37 portable as my main MD recorder/player, connecting it to my system -- not fun. Best Buy refused to do anything but give me a store credit; and the MD recorders they had were insufficient for me (the JE330 and CD/MD combo unit). Well . . . I visited Tweeter the other day (formerly Home Entertainment, Inc.) and imagine my surprise when I asked for a later model and received an MDS-JE630 for $249! (Note: I did have to ask; only the 330 was on display.) Needless to say, I supped it up real fast! The keyboard entry is so much easier; the pitch control is fun (-4 or -5 makes females sound like males -- what is this feature really for?); the two-level screen is helpful, as is the faster title scrolling; the disc-loading mechanism is smooth -- there are so many nice features! Anything else it can do not mentioned in the book? Check out Tweeter, folks. That's a deal! J. C. R. MD: Fw: Problems at Best Buy
I purchased a Sony MDS-JE510 from Best Buy about 2 or 3 years ago (for ~$400). Long (and familiar) story short, it lemoned out and so I was told that I'm owed another player -- one of equal or less value, I'm sure. At least comparable in price. However, all that the Best Buys around me here in Houston are selling now are JE330s and CD/MD combos, which I am not interested in. (Of course, there are 5 CD recorders right next to these.) When I asked the often inept sales associates if anything could be done, I was told that a refund was out of the question, as it's been "over 30 days" since the player was purchased. No, Best Buy could not special order any other model (even the 520, the version that IIRC fixed the 510 problems). My question is the following: Is there anything I can do? I find it unfair that because Best Buy has suddenly almost stopped selling MD equipment, they will do nothing to give me a fair deal. I feel that I should at least get a 520 out of this. Obviously, Sony has more models than they are offering (see http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/consumer/md/04prods_hifi.html?mdsje520). Can I do anything, or has Big Business screwed me over completely? I was thinking of writing the corporate office to see what would happen. (In addition, one salesman -- a young guy -- told me that nobody was buying MD and, at best, it was on its way out. // Curtis Mathews [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I've heard many horror stories about people bringing their units in to get fixed, only to have the thing start acting up again in a few months. . . . I have a Best Buy extended warranty an am tempted to demand a different model unless someone has had a good experience getting a unit repaired. // I was recently in the same boat, and I received my MDS-JE510 from Best Buy yesterday. It's better than it's ever been, and hopefully it will last. In my experience, it's a good unit overall. Of course, I wouldn't *mind* ending up with a newer model. J. C. R. MD: Labels
Says Matt Wall [EMAIL PROTECTED]: // begin quote: . . . i was wondering if anyone has found a way to get the labels off the md, i dont wanna have 5 labels on top of each other or wreck a md by using a razor blade or something like that on it. // end quote: I'm not sure what sort of MDs and labels you have, but I can usually just peel them off. MD: Sony/Palm Deal?
This notice came from the e-mail newsletter Palm Weekly, for Palm organizers: 4- Sony and Palm Deal What do you think of the new Sony and Palm deal? Was it smart of Palm to sign a deal to incorporate the Sony Memory Stick technology into future Palms? Let us know what you think. The pages URL is www.purepalm.com. MD: MP3 -- Am I the only one who hates it so?
Says Craig Bernard [EMAIL PROTECTED]: // begin quote: First off, I'd like to apologize to Mr. Davis for the "he (or she)" remark. With the initials, I wasn't sure and I thought it would be better to be safe than sorry. // end quote: Bah! There is no need to apologize for that. How could you know? Don't worry 'bout it. BTW, all, my name is Jonathan. ;-) // begin quote: As for MD advertising, I've been a subscriber to Sound and Vision for years (previously Stereo Review) and I have seen MD ads. Most recently, a full page ad with a nice picture of a blue MZ-R55. Unfortunately, I have to agree that they haven't done anything catchy on TV like Philips has with the CD-R. I have seen commercials for MD (a couple of High School kids recording mix discs in their room if I recall correctly), but nothing that sticks out in your mind to make you remember. Sony could definately use some better marketing. // end quote: Actually, all of Philips' commercials seem to be this catchy; I remember another about their flat TVs (you know, that couple that decides to put it right over their bed, the morons). I never see any kind of Sony commercials -- or hear any, for that matter. We fans certainly are doing our part, but we can't do it all. It would be nice if they would read this list because they'd get some good ideas. Plus, it'd probably also be encouraging to them. I suppose we'll all see whether or not they'll do anything in the end. J. C. R. Re: MD: MP3 -- Am I the only one that hates it so?
In a nifty summary, Magic wrote the following: MP3 is a good format, and it has a lot of practical uses, but like any freely available technology it is open to abuse. What seems evident from this topic, is that a large number of MD users seem to be very territorial, and hate MP3 simply because it dared to step into the same area as MD. MD has one very distinct advantage over MP3 though: If you want to use MD you *only* need the MD recorder. If you want to use MP3 players, which are the so-called competition, you need a computer and suitable software. MD is very much a stand alone audio solution, whereas MP3 players are just toys for computer buffs. The danger comes from if they make MP3 recorders as stand-alone units requiring no extra hardware. My response: I agree. I think one of the biggest problems with MP3 is that it is just too complicated and requires too much work. MD is straightforward, where MP3 just requires too much from the user, I believe. Admittedly, one of the reasons I dislike MP3 so is that it is slowing down MDs success. True, MD is doing relatively well (so I hear). But we want it to become mainstream. We KNOW everybody will like it, but everybody is still ignorant. As I stated once before, I don't want to depend upon my computer for my music. It should all be able to be managed through my stereo, thank you very MUCH! :-) Yes, MP3 has it's advantages, but one question keep gnawing at me concerning it: Why? (That's a rhetorical question, BTW.) J. C. R. Davis ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MD: MP3 -- Am I the only one that hates it so?
The subject says it all: am I the only person in the world -- or even here -- that hates MP3? I mean, yes, it has definite advantages, such as trying out music or getting it free by downloading; but I hate having to depend on my computer so much. I think that a music medium shouldn't be so tied in to computers. I don't mind MP3 as long as it keeps its place: behind MD and CD. Portable MP3 seem stupid to me because ... well, it's tough to explain. It just seems so much easier and smarter to just transfer MP3s to MD (or CD). To me, that's the only reason it should be used -- and not as a stand-alone medium. It's so computer-intensive! Does anyone see what I trying to say here? J. C. R. MD: MiniDisc saves the day: a brief experience
There was a get-together for the youths in our congregation last Saturday night. During the evening, something went wrong with the DJ's CD player (so I'm told), so he begged us to bring our portable MiniDisc player, a Sony MZ-R37. He connected it and we gave him a quick once-over. He was very impressed. Additionally, a singing artist named Veronica something-or-other was present as well to perform a few songs. The medium chosen for her music? You guessed it: MD. We briefly talked about the format, and I learned that she keeps all of her music on MD. 'It's the way to go,' she said. Incidentally, she owns an R30. Don't give up hope, mailing list folks! - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: MD: Will MD Survive?
Tom ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) wrote: I still maintain that if here in North America we could somehow magically plant a portable MD in everyone's hands for just one weekend..MD would be the biggest thing since Marge Simpson's hair..there has never been a sexier audio medium than the minidisc.period! Response: I agree with this comment. It seems to me that most people that I've come in contact with are just ignorant about MD and it's advantages. Not to mention that the populace is just too confused to decide which format is best (e.g. MD, CD-R/RW, MP3). I just wish Sony and other MD-supportive companies would get on the ball with heavier advertising. I believe MD is the natural evolutionary progression from CD, and I see no reason why they can't live in peace together -- with MP3 as a *side* format for either playing on computer or transferring to MD or CD-R(W)! Re: MD: ATRAC-R and Laser Colors
Wrote RJ Kirkland [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Actually the amount of data stored on an MD could be increased by 8x without a blue laser, simply a slightly different red one. MD-Data2 uses the different laser and a smaller track pitch to achieve a 5x increase in disk capacity. Maxell has already prototyped a MD-Data that can store in excess of 1.5gigs of data. But in both of these cases they will (most likely) never be applied to MD audio because of fear that it would hurt the original MD format customer base. I think it would be a great idea, but I understand how it could potentially hurt MD's use in the US especially. My response: Now that I'm beginning to hear about SACD and DVD-Audio -- things are getting far too complicated -- I imagine that it will be more difficult for MD in the U.S.A. However, I know that some DVDs have 2 layers. Could something like this be implemented for MD, one layer holding the "regular" 74 minutes, and the other holding the increased amount of data (either uncompressed, true quality music of the same quality and length; or ATRAC-compressed music of extended length)? I'm just running ideas through my head here. J. C. R. Davis ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: MD: Titling MDs
Originally, JCRD wrote: + Disc + Track A (track on a one-artist album); or + Track B (track on a various artist album) Andrew Hobgood [EMAIL PROTECTED] responded with . . . Elaborate... I've never seen/heard of a secondary track title that's accessible on minidiscs... is this a shortcoming in my '702, or am I misunderstanding your point? I only know of Disc Title and Track Title. == My apologies for this not being clear. Yes, there are only disc and track titles, but I divided track titles into 2 groups: those titles on MDs by one artist (type A), and those titles on MDs by various artists (type B). For example, a movie soundtrack would generally fall under type B, as many artists usually contribute. A possible track title -- usually the song title in all caps, followed by the artist in mixed case -- could read as follows: "COME BY ME / Harry Connick Jr." However, a type A album would be your general one-artist album ("Hey, have you heard this new album from ___?"). The titles are usually all caps, as follows: "COME BY ME". Is this any clearer? - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MD: Titling MDs
Here's a light-hearted topic that I've been curious about: how do you title your MDs? Basically, I've found that there are 3 kinds of titles: + Disc + Track A (track on a one-artist album); or + Track B (track on a various artist album) I've noticed that different recording labels use different methods on their prerecorded MDs. (The worst I've seen is SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE. All its titles are in the following format: "SONG / PERFORMED BY ARTIST") Here are the formats I use (inspired by Sony recordings): + Disc: "DISCTITLE / Artist(s) 1999; CD-d" (The last part contains the year of release; source; and method of dubbing [dig. or analog]. Also, notice there are 2 spaces on either side of the slash in the disc title.) + Track A: "SONG" + Track B: "SONG / Artist(s)" I think this method is the best I've heard of. Any others? (The "Mad Titler" is forbidden to respond. Just kidding!) ;-) J. C. R. Davis ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
