MD: Target

Speaking of drug testers, I just noticed that Target has two
different PC-Link-equipped portables for sale. They've been selling
blank discs for several years and in fact just added Maxell and
Memorex after previously only stocking Sony.

Re: MD: Digital CD-MD-Amp passthrough

I think you could do a simple test to determine if your MD unit is
passing an unaltered digital signal or not, assuming you have DTS
capability.

Put a DTS CD in your CD player, pass the signal through your MD
recorder, then attempt to decode the DTS signal after it's been
through the MD unit. If it works, you're getting a pure signal. If
it doesn't, you're not.

(Haven't tried this yet myself.)

MD: help! dropouts!!

2000-04-17 Thread Jeff Rodenkirch

I did a live mix for Univision (spanish language network), gave them a feed
(which dumped) and did a backup on my MZR50. The problem is the MDs are
dropping out, even on a "PRO" (Sony $2500+) player. The disks play back
better on my R50 than the "PRO" unit but there are still dropouts. I have
not flown the material in to an editor so I don't know if stuff is gone or
the player is having problems reading the disk. At one point the "PRO" unit
sat for about ten seconds with the clock stopped and only silence comming
out.

Has anyone had this problem and can anyone suggest a fix???

p.s. I could probably edit from other takes but I don't want to.

Well, in time memory will get cheaper, and it is then affordable to make an

Dear Ian,

I got rid of my SONY 888's. That's because I heard a pair of ETYMOTIC
4S's.

My 888 LP's sounded *OK*, much better than any other *SONY* earbuds, and
that was after about 40 hours of careful break-in. Out of the box they
sounded like the others.

Then I heard the ETYMOTIC 4S earphones. "To put it in a sentence, these
are the best sounding headphones that you can buy." (IMHO) Please see
my detailed review and comparison in a previous post to this forum about
a month ago. In that review I also mention the SONY 888's. (I tried to
sell them!)

True, the 888's very well may be one the better *EARBUDS*, but my
"stock" SHARP Earbuds that came with my SHARP MD831 MD sounded better
than the 888's. (again, IMHO)

The 888's can be also be purchased from MCM Electronics in Ohio, on the
web at "http://www.mcmelectronics.com", for about ~$65-70 (NOTE: MCM has
BOTH versions of the 888's, the STD and the LP).

There are many written reviews in respected Audio pages about the Ety's
and they are UNANIMOUSLY positive from all who listened. But the Ety's
ARE in a different class, as they do sell for about $270.

However, the GRADO SR-60's as mentioned by another subscriber, have long
been regarded by many as one of *THE* Best Sounding Headphones.!, AND
they only cost about ~65-$70, the same price as the 888's.

Please note, I am not associated with Etymotic Research or Grado, and do
not have any financial interest in anyone who sells them.

But Earphones, like SPEAKERS, are very personal and what sounds good to
one, does not always sound good to another.

I have heard from three separate sources that the SONY 888's are being
discontinued by SONY. Wonder why?

The best source for ANYTHING related to headphones or headphone
accessories is the HEADWIZE site at "http://www.headwize.com". If it
has to do with headphones, you WILL find it here. I highly recommend
all MD owners to bookmark this site and visit it frequently. It is
loaded with interesting info and run by Chu Moy, a most knowledgeable
and extremely helpful headphone expert.

MD: Does Sharp 831 Have Auto-Level

Does the MT831 have auto level control for recording? My old Aiwa AM-F7

Sharp. I'm dubbing some CD's which have varying levels of volume and
it'd

Thanks.

(Thank heavens) the SHARP 831 does NOT have auto level. And the levels
can be set "on-the-fly" and are NOT reset when you change disks. This
makes the 831 a joy for making live recordings.

Subject: Re: MD: Build you own $100 Mics - Cheap!

Since the minidisc recorders have "plug in power" in the mike circuit,
you can simplify the circuit and eliminate the battery, resistors and
capacitors and wire the capsules directly. Also, sometimes it is more
convenient to not have to mess with cables. So, here is a T mike that I
designed http://www.tir.com/~liteways/Mandolin.html#Microphone

It may be a little easier to build. Take your pick. I don't know if
your capsules are the larger ones or the small ones, but the should be
able to work in either design.

These are the capsules you will need AND they are already MATCHED FOR
 YOU!

 Jeff

Jim there are some distinct ADVANTAGES to using the External Mike
Battery Power as described in Tidmarshs' article.

1). Internal MD mike power is low on most MD machines. The Microphone
sensitivity of electret Mics (almost always) goes down (by 1/2 or more!)
when using only the meager 1.5 Volts (or so) provided by the MD player
at the "MIC INPUT" on the MD recorder.

NOTE:The "MIC INPUT" is usually much more sensitive for "softer" source
material because it usually has an amplifier associated with it to pick
up those hard to hear sounds. This is good for soft music or lectures
and such.

2). You can record LOUDER sounds (those with MUCH HIGHER SPL -- Sound
Pressure Levels) using the Battery Box. This is because the Mic will not
distort as easily with loud sounds, because it has more voltage (9 volts
vs. 1.5) powering the Mic element, allowing better performance. Using a
Battery Box/Mic Combo plugged into the "LINE INPUT" (NOT the "MIC
INPUT"!) will give you a much better recording at any type of "loud"
concert or event where sounds are louder than "normal" and vary widely.

3). The DYNAMIC RANGE of the (un-powered) "LINE INPUT" (where you plug
the Mics battery box in) is SUBSTANTIALLY larger than that of the
(powered) "MIC INPUT". If you are going to do ANY type of recording
with a large dynamic range, you WANT to use the "LINE IN". But because
it does not supply power to the Mics like the "MIC IN" does, hence the
need for the added circuitry.

Using a battery box at a concert means that you can basically set the
recording level for the LOUDEST thing your gonna hear and set it
somewhere between -4 and 0 dB. Then put your MD in your pocket and
enjoy the WHOLE show.

Among the problems already mentioned, by using the "MIC INPUT", you will
be adjusting the recording levels every few seconds.

In closing, the merits of the PANASONIC WM6x mic capsules are well known
throughout the industry. That is why some companies use THESE Mic
capsules to make Mics that cost from 100 to over 200 dollars! People
"in-the-know" specify and use ONLY THE PANASONIC WM6x and use them by
the zillions!

The Mics (capsules) are about the size of a pencil eraser -- I think
it's something like 6 mm Diameter X 5mm for the WM60A's

the unit will run on US power without any type of "power conversion".
Please my ORIGINAL MD-LIST POST post of this SHARP MD-MT831 Power
Problems. It outlines the volt levels involved. Send this to your
Vendor where you originally purchased the unit. It should not be that
old.

My vendor said there would be "NO PROBLEM", but yet I discovered this
OVER VOLTAGE abnormality in some SHARP 831's. It DID in fact have a
problem and the vendor was WRONG.

Sorry your having problems, I LOVE my 831 and have had NO problems since
changing the adapter -- as soon as I noticed the problem

Subject: MD: Sharp MD-MT831-A

Hi,

Hoping some one can help me, I purchased a brand new MT831 from Hong
Kong 2
weeks ago and i have had no joy from it yet. Firstly I discovered the
power problem, where it will not recognize mains power going directly
into
the unit, but I have been able to overcome this by using the cradle.
The
major problem that I have now is that it will not actually read any of
the
discs that I put into it, I keep getting a 'cantreada' error. The user
manual that came with the unit does not explain the error mesages in
english, and as far as I can tell it doesnt even explain an error 'a' in
Japanese. Initially I was not having this problem, it started doing it
intermittenly about a week ago and now will not read any discs at all.

I am holding out on going to a technician because it is not under global
warranty. But I now fear that it is a fault with the laser and I may
not
have any choice but to take it in.

Anybody's help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

3jane, a very unhappy MD user!

MD: Response to....Why would you want a HEADBANGER

Subject: MD: headbanger amps

Why would you want a headbanger amp for? I hear you can buy these
commercially, but why would you want louder headphones? Or would you use
it
with speakers on a portable md player? Do you use this to plug your
sources
into and plug the output into the md recorder's input?

--

One of the reasons would be the use of HIGH QUALITY HEADPHONES. These
phones have much higher impedance's (100 ohms - 600 Ohms) than the
"EARBUDS" that most folks are used to. The either just plain wont work,
or will work at VERY LOW volume levels.

For some neat info on this check out these two sites

"http://www.headwize.com" The HEADWIZE home page, and also check out
what kinds of "real headphones" are available at "http://headphone.com"
, the Headroom Home page.

Try a listen and I'll bet you'll never wear "buds" again..!

I gave the portable MP3 player idea a chuck in the
'bad idea' bin on cost of the player AND cost of
removable media, never mind being tied to a
proprietary link format and a disturbing dependence on

Re: MD: Quality of Digital Out on CDROM

1999-11-30 Thread Jeff DeMaagd

I thought the question was digital out on audio
playback, not 'ripping' in the sense that others were
saying. As others have said, for digital tech, if you
don't have problems with what you have, you don't need
to upgrade. If your CD player can't get around some
scratches that it should or does not have digital out,
upgrade it.

I have no problem with people buying Plextors, I would
buy one if I needed a new CD
player/burner/ripper/whatever, if you are going to
spend money to get an improvement, you might as well
go as much improvement as you can afford.

of error correction than data CDs. Thats one reason
why we need the Plextors when ripping. :-)

Re: MD: MD as 140MB storage medium for MP3?

1999-11-24 Thread Jeff DeMaagd

--- Craig Bernard [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
If I am to understand correctly, this is the same
process as recording from any other source, resulting
in up to 74 minutes of stereo music on the MD.

Yup, it basically stores it as a native MD using
ATRAC. Sharp was trying to get into the 'MP3 == hip'
market I guess.

Is anyone aware of any discussion within the MD
community of using the 140MB worth or data capacity on
an MD to store 140MB worth of MP3's?

That would be nice, so I don't have to compound lossy
to lossy with the files I have encoded before.

That would mean just over 140 minutes of CD quality
stereo sound on one MD for about $3.00US!

If you have music that doesn't take much advantage of
stereo, record as mono if you like, 150 minutes of
audio on a low cost disc. For me, the discs are cheap
enough to stick to stereo.

The 128mbps datarate on that codec is widely regarded
as NOT being CD quality, but for most portable
purposes, would do just fine. As for price, I've
bought a 20 pack retail for 30$ US. I don't see
anything wrong with them, but I don't have a high
dollar setup.

This could easily defeat the RIO type MP3 players
with their limited capacities, and absurdly priced
memory upgrades. They boast non-skip operation due to
"no moving parts" - who cares, MD has been skip free
since the beginning!

The first RIO could barely take 128kbps, and many I
know encode at 160 and above, so they don't bother
with that RIO at any price.

snip
Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. Maybe
it's not possible, but I can't see why not.

Possible but not probable. I'd love to see MD data
make it in the market, but unless a drive can be made
for about 100$US (or less!) it won't make much of a
move against the Zip, despite the lower media costs
and known drive and media unreliability. Zips have
such a momentum that some people buy them because they
know so many others that have them, removable media on
computer isn't useful unless you know other people
that have the drives.

Although I am new to MD, I have been in computer
technology for quite a while.

MD: Etymotic ER4S Earphones-- Oh My G-D!!!!

1999-11-21 Thread Jeff Medin

This is a combo Minidisc and Headphone post -- so I will take the
liberty of posting to both the MINIDISC "http://www.mindisc.org" forum
as well as the HEADWIZE HEADPHONE "http://www.headwize.com" forum.

I just received both a pair of Etymotic ER4S Earphones
"http://www.etymotic.com" along with an AIRHEAD Headphone Amp from
Headroom "http://www.headphone.com" for use with my new SHARP 831 MD
Player/Recorder.

I have died and gone to heaven! The SHARP/ETY Combo sounds incredible.

Sounds better than my home system with Polk satellites/sub woofer combo
driven by an APT/Holman Pre Power amp.

The Ety's are real magic makers and can be driven (IMO!) to respectable
sound levels directly from my 831 WITHOUT an external amp.

The AIRHEAD AMP makes them louder, but the "sonic processor" effect is
barely noticeable if at all. I will call HEADROOM Monday, maybe I got a
bad unit (it happens). So far, I find no need for the amp.

HEADROOM is a GREAT company with AWESOME products. I got the AIRHEAD,
my Ety's, and an MD Carry Case which is just the ticket, and priceless
advice. Shipped in 2 days--for free!

They Ety's quite simply supply the most accurate rendition of sound that
can come from ANYTHING electronic (with a headphone jack!). It is like
plugging your brain directly into the stereo miniplug of my SHARP 831 MD
Player/Recorder!

No wonder they cost $300 Bucks! (But are on sale at HEADROOM for $269.)
My wife said I was out of my mind (to spend 3 bills on cans) and I just
got ALL my Christmas presents).

The last time I was that impressed by anything sonic was:
1) The first time I heard Dahlquist DQ-10's (in their day) driven by
tube Mac's
2) When I auditioned the Original Carver Amazing Loudspeakers -- driven
by OriginalCarver Megawatt Amps. (in their day)
3) When I first heard my new SHARP 831 thru Sony MDR-E888 Ear Buds (the
888's are brandnew and for sale off list--contact me directly if
interested [EMAIL PROTECTED])

Be aware that aside from the price, the Ety's are not for everyone. My
wife's ears are small and finds them VERY UNCOMFORTABLE (She loves her
Sony 600's). Although she is also AWED by the sound. (For about another
$100 or so you can get custom ear molds made!) I find them comfortable
with both the supplied sound isolating silicone or the foam tips.

ETYMOTIC RESEARCH also makes an ER4P for portables. Check out the
HEADROOM site for the differences. Major difference is that the "P" has
a lower impedance (27 ohms VS 100 ohms) than the ER4S. The "S" is
accurate, but very difficult to drive from most portables, but ER4P can
be driven from portables without an amp, BUT they will not sound the
same as the ER4S (less accurate, etc.).

I NEVER thought I would spend 3 Bills on headphones, I am now a convert
and will not travel far from home without my SHARP 831 MD and my Ety
ER4S phones. No more "Bud's" for this guy!

I've used these to very good effect. Here is my stealth technique with a
baseball
hat:

I made tiny slits in my fitted wool baseball cap, right over where my ears
are.

I use the alligator clips attached to the mics, to clip them to the band on
the underside of the hat.

I do this on each side of the hat, and run the cables inside the band to the
back of the hat.

Then, just poke the mics out through the tiny slits on both sides of the
hat.

I then ran the cables down, out the back of the hat, inside my shirt.

Then out my shirt to the recorder that is clipped to my belt.

Works like a charm, and since the hat is dark (blue), and the mics are dark,
nobody even notices them. Not even the folks I went to the show with!!

Helps if you wear a shirt with a collar.

Good luck,

Winston

Subject: MD: MDR-EX70 impressions...

After receiving (and trying) the new EX70's (the ear-plug earphones), I
have to say I'm a bit disappointed.
Bass response was not much better
than on the E888's (which in my mind are still the
king-of-the-less-than-$100-earbuds). While the bass is decent, overall
sound quality is shallow and almost tinny, I'd put the quality somewhere
between the 888's and Sony's default earbuds that are packed in with most
of their MD portables... although I think these are closer to the default
earbuds than to the 888's. Sensitivity is only rated at 100dB/mW, as
opposed to 108db/mW on the 888's anyway, maybe I'll try breaking them
in for a couple of weeks, but I'm not really impressed with them.

My suggestion, if you're happy with 888's, don't bother with the EX70's...
If you're in the US you can order them from www.planetminidisc.com for
$49.95...

Re: MD: Jogging with MD player/recorder

1999-09-15 Thread Jeff Kellam

A couple of things to keep in mind:

Units with 40 sec memories don't necessarily have better skip protection than units
with 10 sec memories. The larger buffer size just helps with power consumption, i.e.

the head doesn't have to power up and read as often with a 40 sec buffer.

In my experiences with running, I've used a Case Logic MD-1 belt pack. The key is to

orient the unit in the pack so that the direction of shock (vertical for running) is
parallel
to the direction the head is reading from (tangential to the minidisc). Otherwise,
the direction of shock is
across tracks (radial to the disk), and skipping is MUCH worse.

With a belt pack and proper orientation, I can run/jog 4-5 miles and only have a
couple of skips towards
the end (when my legs are getting tired).

Also, the Sony 268 earbuds are great for running.

MD: Stereo or Binaural Mic Recommendations Needed

1999-09-11 Thread Jeff Yerkey

I recently bought a Sharp 702 which I am quite happy with. I would like
to know what kinds of stereo mics people are using that they are happy
with.

It would be nice to have the freedom to separate the mics in some
situations, instead of having a unified head/cord design. I'm primarily
interested in a small mic size combined with an overall good-to-very good
performance quality.

I will not be recording any earsplitting loud performances. I would also
like to spend less than $100 for the pair. Thanks in advance.

actually it when you double the ampifier power you get an increase of 3db.
3db is the first noticible increase in volume between ampifiers, but it is
