RE: MD: Minidisco problems

2000-09-11 Thread Link :-7

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with Minidisco. I've worked with
them for over a year now and have found your problem to be alarming.

1) As for the way that addresses enter on the shipping label, I know first
hand that the address that enters is the shipping address. My guess is that
you mixed up your billing and shipping address. I'm not calling you a liar,
but there are many time when I enter my billing address and a different
shipping address into there system.

2) The way things leave the dock in Oakland is up to UPS. Once something
leaves the warehouse, it is on UPS not Minidisco. It does not matter to
what or where the package was going. When you would have checked the
address via Minidisco tracking, the package could have been in Portland
Oregon enroute to Rhode Island. This is on UPS not Minidisco. As for the
reference #, Minidisco can track you via your first name, e-mail address,
phone #, last name, shipping address, city, etc. etc. The confirmation is
for the purpose of letting you know the order was approved and being
shipped. Your tracking information will follow a day later with your order
# for you to track. Is micromanagement really something that is needed?
The problem again is with UPS and not Minidisco.

3) UPS is a pain in the butt, what can Minidisco do? It is the weekend,
orders are not picked up or moved on weekends thanks to the union that UPS
is working with. As for other shippers, Minidisco ships everything UPS. As
for problems, I would say that 1 or 2 in 100 orders create a problem, you've
just drawn that lucky #. Every shipper has problems, I deal with many
orders and over 530 this past year with Minidisco. I've experienced no more
the 20 problems in that many orders.

No system is perfect, no matter who answers the phone on a Saturday or
Sunday, no matter how much hell you raise. If something is in the wrong
place with UPS, it is in the wrong place.

I'm very sorry for your problems with Minidisco, but I should note, that you
would have encountered the same problem with Fed Ex or US Mail had something
been sent to the wrong place. Rerouting something is dependent upon flight
schedules and much more. To simply want an action on a Saturday or Sunday
is a lot to ask. I'm sure you will not have a problem getting a refund on
shipping.

Sincerely,

Mark J. Linkhorst

No, it has everything to do with it. The issue is that the RIAA is losing
money. Metallica is going after the wrong people. When Pearl Jam was
upset about the rediculous price of concerts tickets (and rightfully so,
again, my opinion) they didn't go after the fans buying those tickets, they
went to the source of the problem.

The source of this problem is the RIAA, the band makes pocket change on a CD
sale while the RIAA is putting paper bills in their pocket.

For those that don't want to waste the bandwidth (and their time), the
gist of the above cartoon is this: "Metallica fans who spend hundreds of
dollars buying Metallica CDs, concert tickets, t-shirts, etc. are great
unless they download Metallica MP3's, in which case the band wants them
to go to jail." (That, and some really stupid caricatures of the band
members.) Nice idea except for one fact: the people downloading the songs
aren't the people who have been buying all the CDs, concert tickets, etc.

To quote you my friend (using that lightly) Of course that's all your
opinion, and has nothing to do with whether or not Napster is involved in

I'd be willing to bet all the money to my name that 99% of the songs on
Napster are available at Tower, Virgin, or an online CD store.

That's pretty funny because I just started using Napster a week ago. Not
that I've ever had anything against it, but I buy a lot of music, on Indy
labels. I didn't put any complete album on Napster, I don't feel "right"
doing that. However I did put up some MP3s that I downloaded from Courtney
Love's Hole Website: http://www.holemusic.com
Funny thing is those songs are free on her site, but about %50 of my hits
were for those songs... The other "hits" I received were for all the Indy
bands that I listed because I couldn't find them when I did a search. One
was Southern Lord Records new Release by Mondo Generator called "Cocaine
Rodeo" got some hits as well as some Phish songs from "The White Tape". My
live Smashing Pumpkins material also received a lot of hits, as well as some
rare Wellwater Conspiracy... Try finding any of this at Virgin or Tower
records... No way in hell chief. I'm just one case, but people definetly
knew what they were looking for, and I'm personally glad I could provide
that! Napster didn't infringe on any copyrights, I did, I put those songs
there, I let people download them. I'll take full responsibility for my
actions, please RIAA, lock me up! I could list a post in some newsgroups,
and have people download the songs from my X.drive at Xdrive.com, I didn't
have to put these songs on Napster.

The record industry has to realize that the whole world is changing.
Hell, all someone has to do is make arrangements with someone in some
country that does not honor US or international copyrights and charge
5 cents a download. I don't see how you can stop someone from doing
something like this when they are not bound by US law.

There are international copyright laws.

Let me quote the guy who wrote this Sir Disecter: Hell, all someone has to
do is make arrangements with someone in some
country that does not honor US or international copyrights and charge
 5 cents a download.

Maybe when Metallash!t has to keep canceling concerts because they
can't sell enough tickets, they'll have a change of heart too!! They
are got to be lower then pond scum. Even lower then lawyers!!! (if
you can get that low!!). They are suing their fans This has got
 to be a first.

MD: Napster and my venting

2000-07-27 Thread Link :-7

Hi List,

I totally agree with this the pay after you listen idea...

How many times have you bought a $15 CD for "A" song you like, only to find
the rest of the CD complete crap...

I would bet the MONOPOLY recording industry puts $10 into their pocket on
every CD sold in the US.
Artist: $1.00(tops)
Merchant: $2.00
Cost to press, print, produce: $2.00
That's $5.00, where is the other $10.00 going?

Hmmm, funny how the government is busting up Microsoft because they don't
saturate politicians pockets with "soft" money and entertainment like the
"Entertainment/Recording/Consumer Electronics/Radio/TV/Advertising" Monopoly
industry that exists.

Microsoft is smart... They've got the new Palm Pilot, the X-Box is coming to
kick the Video Game Industry's a$$. I don't see how smart business is bad
business...

What has the recording industry done for me? They've saturated the Media
with sh|t music... Brittany Spears, BackStreet Boys, Eminem, Limp Bizkit (I
don't care how PRO-Napster they are, they still suck), oh, I forgot about
the whole Latin Explosion too, nothing against it, but I guess Ska was two
summers ago and last summer was Brian Setzer and Swing... Whatever they
want to market. The only radio I listen to is oldies, and that's if I'm too
lazy to hook up my minidisc to take a quick drive across town.

There's nothing I like more than watching an Indy Film, because the film
industry sucks... Ok, Star Wars is an exception... How about those
soundtracks... IE Mission Impossible II... Where in the heck are all those
songs in the movie??? Soundtrack my butt, marketing more like it!

I would love to give my favorite ARTIST's $10 or hell, even $20 for some
good music... I don't want to put that money into the recording industry's
pocket that isn't even backing that band since they aren't the newest cool
thing of the moment...

Oh yeah, band's don't even own the copyrights to their music anymore...
They are works for hire, just like a computer programmer... That's real
f(_)cking creative... I don't see how they are alike. Music is Art and is
distributed over a medium as is any art... But, once again, the recording
industry is making some more money on copyrights... And that is why they
fear Napster, no money to be made there...

I like the idea of MP3.com... I think the bank accounts of artists should be
public as well... The guy with the most money in his account must have some
good music if everyone is paying for it... And if the band is making a lot
of money through touring, they could also show that the band is contributing
a certain percentage to charity perhaps... Musicians that have a heart
aren't greedy... Metallica can kiss my A$$... I'm taking all of my
Metallica sh|t to the record store to trade in on some Grateful Dead Dick's
Picks... Those guys did it right, and if Metallica had any gonads, they
would stop worrying about Napster and go after the record industry...

I still respect the hell out of Pearl Jam, they did the right thing by going
after Ticketmaster which is a monopoly as well... But when the Congressman
can call a venue and get choice seats the day before the show... Who's
playing into who's pocket Again, soft money and entertainment...

This Internet scares the government, because Heaven or the Powers that Be
forgive informed people being able to make choices and cut the bureaucrats
out of the loop...

MD: Sony MZ-R70s on Ebay

2000-07-26 Thread Link :-7

Howdy List,

I've been selling a lot of Sony MZ-R70s on Ebay Let me tell you,
whoever made the post about getting one for $180, go for it, sounds like a
good deal. I've been selling them for $199 plus $10 for UPS 2nd Day Air.

Be careful though... Be sure the shipping amount is specified... Be sure it
isn't something rediculous like UPS Ground for $20, because that is where
the person is making their profit, on shipping... Also, is there a reserve?
If there is a reserve price and you don't meet it by bidding $180, then
you aren't really getting a bargain.

Check out all of my online auctions at:

I'm sure you'll figure out my affiliate if you do a little research.

Hello,

You stated that unit was running "slow"... Did it sound slow? Or did it
just sound as if it were running slow? If it didn't sound slow, then I
would say it was the unit reading ahead on the disc for antishock purposes,
but if it sounded slow, I have no idea.

MD: Powered Mics?

Hey List,

So tell me if I'm doing something wrong

I have a Sharp MD-MT831 and a set of Core-Sound Binaural Mics with a battery
box and bass filter. Am I hurting my Sharp by plugging this into the MIC IN
when I record concerts?

What exactly am I screwing up if this is the case?

Any input would be appreciated... Darn manual is in Japanese and I never
really took the time to read into it all that much since it doesn't take a
brain surgeon to figure out how the unit works.

I want to record MP3s with my PC onto MD.

I'm using a Midiman Dio 2448. I want to go optical out into my Sharp 831,

Do I need to convert the MP3 to some type of digital file and then go out?

Any help would be appreciated!

MD: Sharp Bootleg Record Level

2000-04-04 Thread Link :-7

Hi List,

I know I can adjust the record level on the fly with my Sharp 831, but I'm
not sure what kind of lighting I'll have at the Red Hot Chili Peppers / Foo
Fighters concert I will be attending.

I use Core-Sound Binaural Mics with Bass Filter. I'll definetly use the
Bass Filter since this place (Bryce Jordan [EMAIL PROTECTED] Pennsylvania) is a
sardine can.

Anyone have any advice on this? I was thinking 15, but not sure.

I'll try to adjust, but don't want to give myself away...

This is my first time using the Sharp for a show that I care about. I
always used a Sony before, but got sick of worrying about End Search...

Re: MD: What's happening with Mini Disc ???

2000-03-22 Thread Link :-7

Jack,

As an Ebay Powerseller, I can tell you that MD on Ebay is a very strange
place. I don't think anyone has to fear MDs extinction in the next few
years.

There are a lot of Sharp MD-MS702 refurbs that you should be weary of
purchasing.

There are a lot of legitmate people out there selling new units as well.

I'm always hesitant to purchase from someone in Hong Kong or Japan with
little or no feedback, at least when it comes to purchasing electronics.
Even if it is a 5 Pack of discs, you should be sure the person has good
feedback.

Always send things insured or request they are shipped insured, that is a
safe bet. US Postal Money orders are the best way to send and receive
payment outside of Pay Pal.

I've been selling on Ebay for a year now, primarily Minidisc related sales.
If you have any questions concerning this, feel free to e-mail directly at:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
You can also check my feedback at username: o3baby

Personally, I'm always leary to purchase Maxell and Memorex discs. The only
disc I would buy that starts with an M is Minidisco's. They are great, and
yes, I'm an affiliate of theirs.

MD: Refurbished Sharp 702s

2000-03-01 Thread Link :-7

Hi List,

I just wanted to post a warning here about Refurbished Sharp 702s that
appear all over Ebay and other auction sites. These "things" have a 30 Day
Warranty and are NOT "Factory Refurbished". It's unfortunate for people
like the gentleman who has just experience problems with his refurb.

I'm sure in the long run, he will pay more to have that unit repaired than
he would have paid for a NEW Sharp 722.

The worst part of this whole situation is that people are buying up these
units because they are dirt cheap, but people pay anywhere between $150 and
sometimes $200 for a REFURB... I see this all the time on Ebay.

I try to keep an eye on it since I'm a Power Seller there. I don't know how
these units made it back out into the public, who is at fault. If anyone
knows any specifics on these units, let me know. This is about the 5th time
I've heard of someone experiencing problems with a refurb directly.

http://cgi6.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewListedItemsuserid=o3babyinclude=0since=-1sort=2rows=0

If anyone is interested in Sharp 821 US Model or some bulk amounts of discs,
let me know! Check out my auctions and feedback.

Stay away from those nasty refurbs. They are going to give MD a bad name if
we don't educate people.

MD: Arita Blanks are Memorex or Visa Versa

2000-02-23 Thread Link :-7

Hi List,

For all of you Aussies who are wondering about the Arita discs you bought,
I'm pretty sure they are the equivalent to Memorex discs here in the US.
Someone sent me an Arita disc from Norway (yeah, believe it or not) and it
is identical to the Memorex Color Series which has been flooding the market
here in the US for $1.50 a disc.

Memorex is cutting costs on these though, there are no individual slip/flip
cases and the 5 Disc case isn't the most sturdy thing in the world.

For all you guys and gals "Down Under" what color was the discs you bought
if I might ask. The one sent to me was Yellow, and the plastic shrink wrap
actually stuck to the disc case when I pealed it off. Anyone experience
this. I was wondering if you are getting more than one color. Also, are
they made in Taiwan? Just curious.

Cheers, from a guy who has nearly 100 different varieties of blanks...

MD: Aiwa AM-F70 Thoughts

2000-02-18 Thread Link :-7

Hi List,

Here are my thoughts on the Aiwa AM-F70s live recording capabilities.

I was side by side with the owner of a Sharp 721, and a Sony DAT Portable.
We were all using Core-Sound Binaural mics, not the low end. We all had
Bass filters, although not all of us used them.

I had a new Aiwa AM-F70. I used my Bass Filter (and yes, the battery in the
battery box was new). I plugged the mic into the mic jack and set the unit
on low level recording. I never had problems in the past with my Sony
MZ-R30 or R-55 (junk, sh|tty battery life IMHO).
These mics worked great with those units, set on Low Level record.

Anyway, the show was the Smashing Pumpkins in Washington DC. I safely
smuggled the Aiwa inside. In my crouch... ;-) The show rocked, Queens of
the Stone Age rocked.

I got out to my car and couldn't wait to hear the recording. Well, it
sucked, sucked big time! The bass cracked, and it sounded like I had a
blown speaker or headphone... I was bummed.

I got addresses from the other tapers with me, and I received CD-Rs from
both of them. The DAT guy used his Bass Filter, and he also mixed his stuff
down on some mixer (girls name, Christy or something) before putting it on
CD-R.

The guy with the 721 didn't use his Bass Filter, and he didn't mix the show
down before putting it on CD-R.

I found that the 721 sounded the best. The Aiwa couldn't handle the bass,
even while using the filter. My Sony's never gave me that type of sound.
The Aiwa was returned to Circuit City the next day. It also seemed to me
that this unit cracked bass on every Bass setting except 0, and it still
cracked it on my Smashing Pumpkins concert with the XBass set to 0...

Cheers,

MD: Sony JE-520 Turn On Bug

1999-10-24 Thread Link :-7

I had a rough night last night, drinking beer and partaking in other
activities. However, I do remember turning off my Sony JE-520.

I woke up this morning and it was on... Well, maybe I had over-endulged...

I laid on my couch reading Beyond Civilization (Daniel Quinn) and I saw a
flash/flicker out of the corner of my eye.

My JE-520 was off... On it's own.

I watched my clock, and it sporadically turned itself on and off for over 10
minutes. Finally after I was happy, I turned it off with my remote! It's
under extended warranty from Circuit City, I should be able to fight for a
new unit over this because I've had problems with all my MD units under
warranty from them, starting with UTOC problems on the JVC XU-301.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems with the 520, I knew this was
common on other models, 510 to be exact...

Let me know!

Cheers,

MD: Sharp 831 Recharge

1999-10-04 Thread Link :-7

Hi List,

Just received my Sharp 831 from Minidisco. The battery life is really long
even when pushing Grado SR-60s.

My battery light was flashing yesterday after a long day in the computer
lab. I would say that I might have been able to use the unit for another
hour at most.

I put the unit in the cradle and it was fully charged in two hours. I
didn't note the exact minute/hour I put it on the charger, but I know it was
less than three hours and not much more than two.

I find it strange that the cradle supposedly charges slower than the direct
plug in. I wonder how long that would have taken...

I'm using the Japan adapter in a US outlet, will this cause severe damage to
my unit... Everyone I spoke with says it isn't a big deal...

I will try to keep better track next time of exact charging time and try to
totally kill the battery.

Cheers,

MD: 722 UTOC Problems Plug

1999-09-10 Thread Link :-7

Hi List,

I'm very familiar with the plagued UTOC problems of the Sharp 702. I met a
customer of mine recently who is having what sounds to be the exact same
problem with a 722 he purchased from Hong Kong in Oct 98.

Certain discs work fine in the unit, while others display the dreaded UTOC
Error. He says it is sporadic, but from what I understand is that with the
702 it is only going to get worse.

Anyone heard of similar experiences with the 722?

Let me know personally or post it to the list!!

Thanks!!

Also, for anyone interested, I'm selling Sharp 702s, new, with Rebate, $200,
actual receipt from an Authorized Sharp Dealer. E-mail me for details.
Credit cards only, my Ebay username is o3baby, if you are weary of my
validity...

MD: Elektor SCMS Remover and Track Marks

1999-07-26 Thread Link :-7

Hi List,

Just wondering how many people out there use an Elektor SCMS remover.

Here is my dilemma.

The unit seems to put way too many track marks between tracks when I go
directly from a Sony D-E505 (CD Player w/ Optical Out) to either my Sony
JE-520 or Sharp 821.

When I successfully make an MD (sometimes I get too many track marks without
the Stripper involved, or I get short areas of silence), I can play the MD
in my JE-520, go into my Sharp and everything seems to be fine.

Just wondering what all this is... Is this Jitter?

Thanks for any replies!

Sincerely,

Mark J. Linkhorst
