Re: [MBZ] Fuel filter misadventures

2005-12-10 Thread Mitch Haley
I've only changed the bolt-on filter on a 617 once, but here's how it went:
Replaced filter (dry, I don't like to pour unfiltered fuel into the center
where it will go straight to the IP) with the engine hot.
Started car w/ about 1/4 throttle. It started immediately, then began to
misfire. Tried to hold 2000rpm on the tach to keep it from stalling.
After the engine was running smoothly, let it idle a bit, then shut off.
Total strokes on the leaky primer pump = zero.

Re: [MBZ] Fuel filter misadventures

2005-12-10 Thread Tom Scordato

Here is my method

I fill my New canister filter with clean kerosene. Eliminates the air
pocket caused by dry filter. If no kerosene, poor old canister filter
diesel into the new filter carefully. The half a pint of unfiltered diesel
will not hurt you.

Then carefully new filter screw back on. May still run some what rough but
usually not. Helps if car is hot. I change my in line and canister filters
every when I do my lube oil change and that I do after I have run the car
on highway for 20-30 miles or so.

After change get in have fun and run her like hell. these old cars are not
pieces of furniture, They are best if run on highway continuously.

plugged up fuel filter or something. For the last several days wife
says its real slow in the morning. I drove it and if felt like boost
cutting in and out but usually went away after a while. Also hear some
sort of a squeeling sound sometimes, though it was the belt but really
sounds like its coming from the turbo. Yesterday I noticed if you keep
it revved up(in park) the RPM goes up and down random like its not
getting fuel or something. A boost problem wouldnt cause that. Today,
it starts but I cant rev it up and it wont idle very long before it
dies. 3rd vehicle, 90 suburban 6.2 diesel, fires right up after 1 glow.
No mobile 1, no block heaters used on any.

Hm. It was about 45 this morning, and nothing had any problems starting.
Powerchoke's down a glow plug, and apparently the 87 300TD is as well, since
it's glow plug light hasn't worked in a while. The 78 300D has been down for
the count for a few days, since the glow plugs aren't coming on, will fiddle
with that this weekend (no, didn't try that this morning).

Check the probably coked up line from the ALDA - the boost cutout line? - in
your SDL, Kaleb. The squealing could easily be accessory bearings. (It probably
also had gelled fuel.)

You can also use a can of Diesel Purge or in a REAL pinch a qt of ATF to

Bob has been doing alot of the sponsorship stuff. It occured to me that
there are easy possibilitites for local/individual sponsorship too. I bet
Star Motors (my Indy) would sponsor me. They run ads as it is...THEY keep
my car in top condition, so it's an easy spin for them in a new ad. Others
could do the same. All shops have logos and sign making places are
everywhere.

Marshall,

I thought you swore by GE OTR 8932Q? Not available in the midwest (no
distributor), so I bought a case (4 gallons treats 4,000 gallons - for gas
stations) direct from the factory at wholesale price - they even billed me for
it - no money up front. Put it in a STA-BIL container and figured out a little
chart (I think it's 1/4 oz per 2 gals - I forget, taped the chart to the
bottle)) and use it for anti-gel. Is a good water DISPERSANT too along with
all the other usual claims.

When I ordered it, the salesman asked if I was interested in becoming a
Midwest distributor. Too many irons in the fire for me, but seems like good
stuff. An opportunity there for any entrepreneur amongst us.

At 4F here, the 2.5 started quickly after two glow cycles. I did add
anti-gel (Power Service?) a couple of days earlier. The SDL started
almost as fast - also had the stuff added to the tank, but it was an
alomst full tank, and didn't get many miles to mix it in. The battery
crapped out in the 240D - had to use the battery that's been on a
trickle charger for over a year while I SLOWLY get the SLC engine put
back together. It was hard to start, but did.

Next, 300SDL, starts but will not stay running. I think it has a
plugged up fuel filter or something.

Yup - helped Dad start the R755 Jacobs in the Cessna 195 one new years

the crankcase, we couldn't move the prop by hanging on it. Had to warm
it with a space heater and tarp for an hour, shovel out the shattered
frozen battery, and run the Southwind gasoline heater in the cabin (5
gal. oil tank in there under the instrument panel) to get it to start.

The take-off run sure was short though --

Once things are cleaned out, it's sometimes 4-5 years before it seems to
need another treatment (when idle starts to get uneven), but all it
takes is one bad tank of fuel or a 2-3 month idle spell with less than a
half tank of fuel in the car and the fuel in the tank can get pretty
dicey. If you're going to let fuel sit, a fuel stabilizer (like Stabil)
is smart (but it's MUCH more necessary in gasoline engines in my
experience).

the tank any time temp drops 20 degrees so Diesel Kleen gives me some water
sequestering. It also raises the cetane which makes cold starting easier.
I noticed that Diesel Kleen smells alot like Diesel Purge so I tried using it
in larger concentrations occasionally (like once every three months) to see if
it would mask Hammies failing injector(s) and it does. When the idle gets bad I
run him down to about 1/4 tank of fuel and put in a whole bottle of Diesel
Kleen (enough for 50 gallons), drive 30-40 miles and fill up. Loping idle and
hard starting disappears. I know its masking the problem but its cheap...

DO NOT USE Diesel Kleen for cold weather fuel treatment!

I quote from the Power Service page:

Diesel Kleen does not provide any cold-weather operability benefits;
Diesel Kleen is not an antigel.

I'll admit that there are many times when his right hand leaves the

to rule out his foot working a clutch.

You're right, from the way he is started and the lack of other cars, it
does seem like an exhibition run. Particularly since there are cars and
motorhomes parked at the side of the road along the route.

It's interesting, however, that there are large rubber marks from hard

[MBZ] Buying a car in GA and registering it in OK

down there next weekend with my daughter. Does anyone have 1st hand

I think what he said is that the plates transfer with the car and not the

I'd think that as long as you have the old plates (and the registration
card) you'd be safe if stopped. Even if the plates stay with the owner, as
is the case in Iowa, you could simply mail the plates back to the seller
once you register in Oklahoma.

Yep.
In Michigan, you are allowed three days from date of purchase
to obtain a plate. If the car is replacing another, the insurance

do is drive it without plates, which gains you unwanted police

if you are stopped for other reasons.

[MBZ] 93 W201 Sportline for sale in Tulsa

2005-12-10 Thread Tom Reynolds
Dear listers;
Until today, I had an appointment for 1:00 P.M. tomorrow (Sunday)
to see a 1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6 Sportline. It's silver, has 123k
miles, has lately been serviced by Sid and Denny at Benzin Motor Works, has
all (I'm pretty sure) records, automatic transmission, and the bench rear
seat. Sounds like a great car, and I was seriously thinking of buying it
if it was as pleasant as I was hoping it would be, but then I found a great
300E, and in my circumstances I prefer the 300E (even though it's not a
Sportline) over a 2.6 Sportline W201. So, if anyone is interested in this
car, please give Jane a call on her cell at 918-361-3421 or 918-378-7731 or
at home at 918-227-0591 where you may get her husband Jack. (enough numbers?)
It was advertised in the Tulsa World, which is how I found out
about it. The asking price in the ad is $4750.00 I have no financial
interest, etc. and have not seen the car. But, I was interested enough to
set up an appointment to look at it, and would have if I hadn't found
another car I'd like better.
Best regards,
Tom Reynolds

experience in how GA treats the license plates (tags)? Here's what I've
been told by a GA resident, but I'd like confirmation one way or t'other.

I think what he said is that the plates transfer with the car and not the
owner. So, I'd be driving back to Tulsa with GA plates, a Bill of Sale,
and a signed over title. Right? Wrong?

By bench, do you mean three across seating?
Sportline seats are double bucket, it really
would not be comfortable to sit in the middle.
Also, the front seats are heavily bolstered
on the sides.

plates no longer legally transfer with car, but the seller will generally
still keep the plates on the car

No, I inquired about that one lately as well, but Howard sold it some time

been kicking myself if it just would have been sold a few months before I
 started looking. This one is burgundy/palomino with 162k, a '88 300E.

Well, yeah, as opposed to the two individual buckets in the 500E (or the
928). Jane did say you could seat three back there, but that the person in
the middle was going to be pretty uncomfortable, as the rear armrest would
be in the center of their back.

Re: [MBZ] Buying a car in GA and registering it in OK

2005-12-10 Thread Robert Tara Ludwick
If traveling any kind of distance it's best to go to the local DMV and
get a drive away permit. It'ss probably cost from $10-20, you'll need
proof of insurance . This will keep you out of trouble (if the old tags
have an outstanding parking ticket on them or the PO had warrents or the
thing was seen outside a bank that was robbed, guess where you'll be
spending a few days ??? :-). Make SURE to check with your local DMV to
see exactly what kind of paperwork that you will need to register it in
your state. GA has fairly liberal requirements for tagging older cars,
but your state may require more, or an afadavit of some kind from GA
saying that you don't need such and such. ( Last time I bought a car in
Maine and brought it to Arkansas, I wound up having to pay the state of
maine to ship their title requirement info to Arkansas because AR. had a
book that was outdated by a few years and was too lazy/cheap to get the
info themselves. It took me about 7 months to get a title.)
I don't know if any still have this requirement, but some states used to
make you check in at the truck weigh station if on a drive away permit,
watch the signs when approaching the scales.
