Re: [MBZ] Fuel filter misadventures
I've only changed the bolt-on filter on a 617 once, but here's how it went: Replaced filter (dry, I don't like to pour unfiltered fuel into the center where it will go straight to the IP) with the engine hot. Started car w/ about 1/4 throttle. It started immediately, then began to misfire. Tried to hold 2000rpm on the tach to keep it from stalling. After the engine was running smoothly, let it idle a bit, then shut off. Total strokes on the leaky primer pump = zero.

Re: [MBZ] Fuel filter misadventures
Here is my method I fill my New canister filter with clean kerosene. Eliminates the air pocket caused by dry filter. If no kerosene, poor old canister filter diesel into the new filter carefully. The half a pint of unfiltered diesel will not hurt you. Then carefully new filter screw back on. May still run some what rough but usually not. Helps if car is hot. I change my in line and canister filters every when I do my lube oil change and that I do after I have run the car on highway for 20-30 miles or so. After change get in have fun and run her like hell. these old cars are not pieces of furniture, They are best if run on highway continuously. I drove it and if felt like boost cutting in and out but usually went away after a while. Also hear some sort of a squeeling sound sometimes, though it was the belt but really sounds like its coming from the turbo. Yesterday I noticed if you keep it revved up(in park) the RPM goes up and down random like its not getting fuel or something. A boost problem wouldnt cause that. Today, it starts but I cant rev it up and it wont idle very long before it dies. 3rd vehicle, 90 suburban 6.2 diesel, fires right up after 1 glow. No mobile 1, no block heaters used on any. Hm. It was about 45 this morning, and nothing had any problems starting. Powerchoke's down a glow plug, and apparently the 87 300TD is as well, since it's glow plug light hasn't worked in a while. The 78 300D has been down for the count for a few days, since the glow plugs aren't coming on, will fiddle with that this weekend (no, didn't try that this morning). Check the probably coked up line from the ALDA - the boost cutout line? - in your SDL, Kaleb. The squealing could easily be accessory bearings. (It probably also had gelled fuel.) Re: [MBZ] another secret message for LT Don
At 4F here, the 2.5 started quickly after two glow cycles. I did add anti-gel (Power Service?) a couple of days earlier. The SDL started almost as fast - also had the stuff added to the tank, but it was an alomst full tank, and didn't get many miles to mix it in. The battery crapped out in the 240D - had to use the battery that's been on a trickle charger for over a year while I SLOWLY get the SLC engine put back together. It was hard to start, but did. In real cold weather where its below freezing all the time I use about 4oz of Diesel Kleen at every fillup. In New England temps vary WILDLY so it might be 40F in the day time and 10F at night. Marshall says water will condense into the tank any time temp drops 20 degrees so Diesel Kleen gives me some water sequestering. It also raises the cetane which makes cold starting easier. I noticed that Diesel Kleen smells alot like Diesel Purge so I tried using it in larger concentrations occasionally (like once every three months) to see if it would mask Hammies failing injector(s) and it does. When the idle gets bad I run him down to about 1/4 tank of fuel and put in a whole bottle of Diesel Kleen (enough for 50 gallons), drive 30-40 miles and fill up. Loping idle and hard starting disappears. I know its masking the problem but its cheap... DO NOT USE Diesel Kleen for cold weather fuel treatment! I think what he said is that the plates transfer with the car and not the owner. So, I'd be driving back to Tulsa with GA plates, a Bill of Sale, and a signed over title. Right? Wrong? Re: [MBZ] Buying a car in GA and registering it in OK
I'd think that as long as you have the old plates (and the registration card) you'd be safe if stopped. Even if the plates stay with the owner, as is the case in Iowa, you could simply mail the plates back to the seller once you register in Oklahoma. Re: [MBZ] Buying a car in GA and registering it in OK
Different laws apply in different States. FL and Utah to CA, I went down to the local respective DMV's and purchased a trip permit good for two weeks. Proof of insurance was required. Sales tax was collected in FL and then I got credit for it when I registered the car in CA. Desert Rat wrote: Different laws apply in different States. Yep. In Michigan, you are allowed three days from date of purchase to obtain a plate. If the car is replacing another, the insurance on the old car will suffice. Unfortunately, the legal thing to do is drive it without plates, which gains you unwanted police attention. The illegal thing, putting the plate from your old car on it, doesn't get you pulled over, but gets you a ticket if you are stopped for other reasons.
Re: [MBZ] Buying a car in GA and registering it in OK
usually as long as you have a bill of sale you dont really need a plate to transport it back. Your ins will also cover it for 30 days from purchase. Thats how it works in OK and I have done it many times. John Ervine wrote: Tom Reynolds wrote: I think what he said is that the plates transfer with the car and not the owner. [MBZ] 93 W201 Sportline for sale in Tulsa
Dear listers; Until today, I had an appointment for 1:00 P.M. tomorrow (Sunday) to see a 1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6 Sportline. It's silver, has 123k miles, has lately been serviced by Sid and Denny at Benzin Motor Works, has all (I'm pretty sure) records, automatic transmission, and the bench rear seat. Sounds like a great car, and I was seriously thinking of buying it if it was as pleasant as I was hoping it would be, but then I found a great 300E, and in my circumstances I prefer the 300E (even though it's not a Sportline) over a 2.6 Sportline W201. So, if anyone is interested in this car, please give Jane a call on her cell at 918-361-3421 or 918-378-7731 or at home at 918-227-0591 where you may get her husband Jack. (enough numbers?) It was advertised in the Tulsa World, which is how I found out about it. The asking price in the ad is $4750.00 I have no financial interest, etc. and have not seen the car. But, I was interested enough to set up an appointment to look at it, and would have if I hadn't found another car I'd like better. No, I inquired about that one lately as well, but Howard sold it some time ago, think maybe a few years ago, but a long-ish time, I know I would have been kicking myself if it just would have been sold a few months before I started looking. Well, yeah, as opposed to the two individual buckets in the 500E (or the 928). Jane did say you could seat three back there, but that the person in the middle was going to be pretty uncomfortable, as the rear armrest would be in the center of their back. Re: [MBZ] Buying a car in GA and registering it in OK
If traveling any kind of distance it's best to go to the local DMV and get a drive away permit. It'ss probably cost from $10-20, you'll need proof of insurance . This will keep you out of trouble (if the old tags have an outstanding parking ticket on them or the PO had warrents or the thing was seen outside a bank that was robbed, guess where you'll be spending a few days ??? :-). Make SURE to check with your local DMV to see exactly what kind of paperwork that you will need to register it in your state. GA has fairly liberal requirements for tagging older cars, but your state may require more, or an afadavit of some kind from GA saying that you don't need such and such. ( Last time I bought a car in Maine and brought it to Arkansas, I wound up having to pay the state of maine to ship their title requirement info to Arkansas because AR. had a book that was outdated by a few years and was too lazy/cheap to get the info themselves. It took me about 7 months to get a title.) I don't know if any still have this requirement, but some states used to make you check in at the truck weigh station if on a drive away permit, watch the signs when approaching the scales. -Robert Tom Reynolds wrote: Well, as some of you may know by now, I'm buying Howard Ginsberg's 1988 300E.
