Before I have taken a chisel and was able to turn it by beating it with

have a socket big enough and would buy one but not sure what size.

Re: [MBZ] 84 300SD Starter Question

2006-01-16 Thread Curt Raymond
How flat is the battery in it? How long did you leave the booster cables hooked
up before you tried to start the car?
When I'm boosting my 240D I leave the cables connected for at least 5
minutes. If the battery is down enough that I need to boost it its going to
take some time to get back up to where it'll start the car.
I have very good, heavy booster cables by the way, cheap ones will get really
hot when you're slamming power through them to a flat battery. You can really
heat 'em up boosting a 6v tractor off a 12v pickup, not too bad if you're quick
but my Great uncle had some cheapie cables for awhile and ended up burning the
end off one.

You can't start the car purely off the booster cables, your cables don't make
a good enough connection, you need to let the battery in the car pick up some
charge before you try to start.

I'm looking at a 1984 300SD with 231k miles. In attempting to start it
using booster cables, with a hot jump battery, the starter spings very
slowly. Never gets fast enough to start and he jumper cables get hot to
the touch. Is this a bad starter or some other problem in the
electrical
system?

OK, slowing working out the little bugs with the euro 5.0 in the US 380.
I figured out this thing has a throttle position sensor which is
located under the air meter deal, fuel distributor etc right on the side
of the throttle body. The euro engine has a wire with a flat 2 lead
connector, the US car and another US car I have here has a round 3 lead
connector for the sensor. I have a high idle of 900-1K rpm and am
assuming this is probably the cause. I also seem to have a very slight
surge when maintaining the same speed going down the road which also
leads to this. Anyways, Im assuming Im going to have to swap the
sensors. Any way of doing this short of removing the whole injection
system?

Thinking about taking the whole thing off anyways and putting the US
version back on. On the US version there is a wire that is supposed to
hook up to some sort of valve just to the left of the fuel dist. There
is a small fuel line that comes out of the fuel dist that goes to this
valve with the electrical connection, then if goes back out of this
valve and around to another valve on the back of the fuel dist that has
a vacuum connection on it. From there I think it goes to the warm up
regulator but cant remember off hand. The euro motor does not have this
setup with that valve and therefor the wire is not hooked to anything
for it. Anybody know what this is for and what it causes when not
hooked up? Think I should put the US stuff on the euro motor or just
swap the throttle sensor and leave it at that? With the US injection
parts on the euro motor, will it decrease the power? Im sure nobody
will know much about this since this is sort of new territory but
thought I would ask.

Injection pump, turbocharger, intercooler and transmission for starters.

IP would need big modifications, turbo would need to be replaced
with much larger, big intercooler purchased and plumbed, tranny can
probably make do with valve, governor and modulator changes.

probably everything else in the front end, exhaust system, driver's seat,
work on the sunroof, RF fender repainted and the left side doors

to be in top condition, except for needing a couple of glow plugs.

In essence, it was a Kaleb car. It would have been a great parts car, as
all the sheet metal was straight and I only found putty in the LR
door. The hood, radiator support and RF fender had been replaced.

They guy who bought it was from Des Moines. The seller said the buyer had
a rusty SDL with a good engine and trans and was going to put his trans in
this car. It was not Dan W. Whoever it is belongs on this list. Had the

I think it's a problem in the jumper cables. 4ga cables don't get hot, 10ga
cables get hot and have enough voltage drop to prevent them from starting a
car. 6ga and 8ga cables are iffy.

Tom - In my 300SD those long ones are the headlight adjustments. It seemed
to me that they were a tad slow to make much difference, but they did line
mine up after a few tries. I also had loose screws holding on the metal
frame that holds in the sealed beam headlights; you might check those. To
get to them you need to take off the white [or black] knobs you already know
about and slide out the plastic frame. You will need to loosen the turn
light one to get the main plastic covers to slip in and out.

Subject: [MBZ] 83 300SD headlight adjustment question

Greetings -

My headlights are way off - point at the ground basically, and the right one
is good at lighting up the shoulder. I thought I had it figured out what
adjusts the lights, but this turned out not to be the case - there are white
knobs that just hold the assembly in (loosening one on the side allowed the
turn signal assembly to slide forward, for example), and there are black
plastic-handled knobs that don't appear to do much - though I am suspecting
these are the adjusters? These are long and almost look like they are
designed for a wrench - but turning them didn't do anything - unless maybe I
am missing something else that needs loosened first (the white ones maybe?).
I was trying to figure this out on a deserted road with an LED flashlight
(in the cold
too) so I may have missed something obvious.

Thanks in advance for any advice on what I should be looking for and what
effect each adjuster (once identified) has...idea being that if I have more
of an idea what to do I might actually pull this off w/out having to take it
to a body shop

Don't know if it applies to cars, but my recollection is that some bikes

Was there not a thread on here a while back that suggested a spark plug

to go in through the end where the plug normally would and the hex end on

Alan,

In my experience, jump-starting a diesel - whether it's a little VW
diesel, or an MB diesel - is very different than your typical gas
engine. To make a long story somewhat shorter, I finally learned that
6 gauge, or even 4 gauge, booster cables are nearly useless. 2 gauge
is barely adequate, but it's hard to find anything larger unless you
make them yourself from welding cable. The smaller cables make the
engine turn over very slowly. Bigger cables, or doubling-up two
pairs of smaller ones, made a HUGE difference even on my little VW
diesel 4-banger.

The best deal I know of is at AutoZone. They have a nice set of
2-gauge, 20-foot cables, made in USA, with beefy clamps for $39. I
looked all over and that's the best deal I could find for seriously
heavy-duty cables.

While your 300SD *could* have some other electrical issues, my money
is on the booster cables you were using. Try bigger ones, or simply
get the battery fully charged - that will eliminate that possibility
quickly. If a fully-charged Group 49 battery is having trouble
spinning the engine, you either have wiring problems, or a starter
going out.

It's a bad battery combined with too-wimpy jumper cables. I was

Alan,

More than likely it's small diameter cables and a completely dead battery.
You need jumper cables made from least 8 gauge wire to jump start without
help from the vehicle's battery and even 8 gauge will get warm. It helps a
lot to let the vehicle's battery charge 15 minutes through the jumper cables
before trying to start.

hot, 10ga cables get hot and have enough voltage drop to prevent
them from starting a car. 6ga and 8ga cables are iffy.

[MBZ] 83 300SD headlight adjustment question

2006-01-16 Thread Tim C
Greetings -

My headlights are way off - point at the ground basically,
and the right one is good at lighting up the shoulder. I
thought I had it figured out what adjusts the lights, but
this turned out not to be the case - there are white knobs
that just hold the assembly in (loosening one on the side
allowed the turn signal assembly to slide forward, for
example), and there are black plastic-handled knobs that
don't appear to do much - though I am suspecting these are
the adjusters? These are long and almost look like they are
designed for a wrench - but turning them didn't do anything -
unless maybe I am missing something else that needs loosened
first (the white ones maybe?). I was trying to figure this
out on a deserted road with an LED flashlight (in the cold
too) so I may have missed something obvious.

Thanks in advance for any advice on what I should be looking
for and what effect each adjuster (once identified)
has...idea being that if I have more of an idea what to do I
might actually pull this off w/out having to take it to a
body shop

[MBZ] 84 300SD Starter Question

2006-01-16 Thread Alan Duff
I'm looking at a 1984 300SD with 231k miles. In attempting to start it
using booster cables, with a hot jump battery, the starter spings very
slowly. Never gets fast enough to start and he jumper cables get hot to
the touch. Is this a bad starter or some other problem in the electrical
system?

Re: [MBZ] Fat lotta good

2006-01-16 Thread R A Bennell
I would start out just checking continuity on the block heater to ensure
that the element is not open. Then check for continuity to ground to see if
it is shorted out. If that checks out, you could check the resistance as
well. Ohms law will tell you how big the heater is. E = I X R & P = E X I
( E is Voltage which we know is 110 to 120) (P is watts which we can
determine with the voltage and the resistance)

If it does not check out at the plug end of the cord, then suspect the cord
to start with and pull it out and check it or else check the element at the
block.

DUH I can't believe I had that backwards, of course I should be in a lower
gear for roll starting, what a chucklehead. I think I may have gotten it in
my head because its nearly impossible to pull start my Farmall tractor with
my Dakota in any gear lower than 3th (of 5) because the truck is too light.

Should I check resistance at the plug and then at the heater? How does the
plug connect to the heater, just a press fit?

I know that batteries lose capacity, my assumption was its good to start
with more capacity since I'll be losing it...

Yeah, it wasn't doing what you expected. Check the cord, and check
that it is plugged into the heating element on the block as well.
They _do_ burn out, but they're fairly easy to replace. (But _not_
that easy to put in the first time.) Cord problems are just as likely
however, that's a harsh environment for a power cord, so you need
to get your meter onto the heating element's pins as well if there's
a problem in order to be sure of what you need.

Maybe

You have it backwards. The _lower_ the gear the faster the engine
spins. But, too low and the wheels just skid on the ground, wasting
all that hard-earned energy. (Hard-earned in our case, 'cause it was
usually a push start we were trying. If you were lucky you had a
brother or friend or two along, and the pushing was much easier.
I got quite adept at starting the Falcon solo, until a new starter
cured its problem. Believe me you also got very good at evaluating
slope when you went to park, and you _never_ parked in a hole 'cause
if you did it was guaranteed that you'd need to push it. It was
_always_ second gear [of three] that worked for me, btw. One would
just skid, and three rolled the engine over too slowly to start.)

Pffft. Measure them and see whether those ratings are still (or ever
were) any good. Those numbers change a _lot_ over the life of a
battery. You need a carbon pile battery tester to do that, though.

Re: [MBZ] CR report on headlight bulbs

Hi Harry,

For a UK test on standard, +30, and +50 bulbs, download this Zip file
and open the enclosed HTML files:

http://www.w124performance.com/docs/general/bulb_tests2.zip

In a nutshell, the +50 bulbs will give you the best performance.
However, these are not sold on the shelf in the USA. You have to buy
them from a place that imports them, or buy from overseas. As someone
already mentioned, the SilverStars sold in the USA are *not* the same
as the SilverStars sold in Europe. Very stupid marketing, IMO. As I
mentioned before, these are the way to go if you don't want to bother
with relays and therefore need stock wattage. The tradeoff is cost and
shorter lifespan. You can buy the "good" bulbs from one of these two
places - there may be others, but these are the ones I have memorized:

http://www.powerbulbs.co.uk/

http://www.danielsternlighting.com/products/products.html

Sadly, PowerBulbs no longer carries overwatt "Rally" bulbs, but Dan
Stern can get them. I'm not too crazy about RallyLight's selection,
since their page either doesn't state the brand of the bulb, or they
have Hella, who is not know for making great bulbs. To a certain
extent it's probably semantics, as not many people would likely tell
the difference with the naked eye, between two bulbs of the same watt
rating. (?)

:-)

Re: [MBZ] Replacement Engine Compression

2006-01-16 Thread Robert & Tara Ludwick
Only difference is mechanics actually need to perform to collect a bill,
Doctors don't have to fix anything yet they still are allowed to
forceably collect money for non service. if a mechanic tried that, he'd
be in serious trouble.

Most mechanics spend far more time diagnosing a problem on a car than
doctors do on a human, strange since a human is supposed to so much more
complex.
at least when a mechanic rips you off, you can publically say he's
either a crook or a moron, make those statements about a DR and you
could wind up in court.

I'm just waiting for the day a doctor brings a car to my shop. I think
I'll keep it for a few days, tell him there's nothing wrong with the
thing...it's just depressed, suggest that he have the car talk to
someone and send him a bill for $1500 and pursue it vigorously .

--Robert, who after 20 years of Dr's saying nothings wrong and
charging big for it, finds out that all my bones and joints are
disintegrating fast and I'm shopping for wheelchairs soon.
( to qualify, I did finally find a guy with a clue...after it's too late
to do anything about it. but 20 years...come on,I could have bought a
new car every 2 years on what I've been paying those clowns )

I think I may have gotten it in my head because its nearly impossible

3th (of 5) because the truck is too light.

Well, a Farmall is geared rather lower than a 240D, so I'd expect that.
My favorite tractor I grew up around was our Farmall 200.

Should I check resistance at the plug and then at the heater? How does
the plug connect to the heater, just a press fit?

Exactly. Most I've seen are press-fit, but I have one that also has a
screw collar kind of like a speedometer cable. It's on the Frankenheap.

Both 115's, yes indeed. Frankenheap's photos and other vital statistics
are available on its web site: http://cathey/dogear.com/frankenheap.html
The heap is a Euro 4sp 200D, formerly with a column shifter. I
also bought Casey's blackberry farm Gumpenheap-to-be 115, but sold
it off in turn to a neighbor. When running again, it ought to be
a notably better car than the heap.

I've seen a photo of Gump (I think), but not lately.

Basically
both were faster than I wanted to go.

Last time I visited my brother he had just got a 1000cc bike and was
telling
me how fast it was. So I took it for ride, road up the road and the
bike
would only get up to about 90MPH, where I normally on a small bike I
could
at least hit 100MPH. On the way back the max it would do was about
50MPH.
When I slowed down to make turn I realized why when the front breaks

Another difference I'd mention is that the 220D might have an oil-bath
(element) air filter, and an oil-bath (you) oil filter. Most would
consider the later paper air element to be superior, at least in
terms of cleanliness, and _everybody_ would consider the later
top-access oil filter canister to be superior.

Supposedly a 240D head will bolt right onto a 200D/220D motor, and
I believe the Frankenheap has one of these. Supposed to breathe
a little better that way. All I know is that the Frankenheap
is eminently drivable. (Stickshift.)

Earlier 115's I've seen have metal plates covering the interior space
behind the fender. Later ones had plastic. Don't know if that was the
significant difference or not.

Anyhow, yes, the list has been invaluable in this quest of mine - especially

[MBZ] Report on $700 KC 300D

2006-01-16 Thread Loren Faeth
I took a look at the "300D" in KC over the weekend, thanks to Chris
M. Before I left, I had determined that it was a 300SDL. A 124 300D, I
would have snapped up. This SDL needed some serious work, or was a parts
car. Aside from needing a trans, it needed a windshield, ball joints and
probably everything else in the front end, exhaust system, driver's seat,
work on the sunroof, RF fender repainted and the left side doors
re-aligned. IF that work was done, you'd have a 315K SDL that was showing
signs that the cancer worms might bloom next summer. The engine appeared
to be in top condition, except for needing a couple of glow plugs.

Had the
guy from DM not bought it I was going to point it out to Kaleb and everyone
else on the list.

I met up with my brother and we spent the weekend salvaging Scout and IH
pickup parts near Manhattan KS. So the trip had a dual purpose, and my
wife never knew i looked at another car in KC!

Loren
Still only 2 SDLs

Re: [MBZ] 123 air dam

2006-01-16 Thread R A Bennell
I recall a magazine article from a while back that tried to improve the
mileage of a Chevy Suburban by various means. One of the things that they
found helped quite a bit was an airdam to prevent the airflow under the
vehicle. They commented that the undercarriage on a Suburban is not very
smooth and as such, diverting the air around the vehicle was quite helpful.

They did not use anything fancy. They had a flat aluminum plate mounted
behind the bumper and projecting down something like 6 inches.

Subject: [MBZ] 123 air dam

OK, this may be totally frivolous, but I was driving home at 70mph last
night against a 40mph headwind, wondering if there is anything I can do to
improve the 123 wagon's aerodynamics. Only thing that came to mind was a
front air dam, as I've heard that a relatively large percentage of the drag
on any car comes from the undercarriage. Two questions:

 1) Are functional aftermarket air dams still available for 123s? I know
racers used them some time ago.

 2) Anybody know whether they might improve mileage on the hwy?

 Thanks,

The inquiry looks legit, like it came from ebay. However, to reply to the

When the starter was dying I was using 3rd to start with, todays
shot with 4th was an experiment which I'm thinking didn't work out so
well. I'd thought 4th would help get rpms up but apparently its
difficult to overcome the resistance of the engine in that gear. Maybe
tonight I'll experiment with a couple starts in each gear.

(which has a 1000cca battery vs Hammie's 900cca) so I'm somewhat
loathe to spend any money on Hammie.

Pffft. Measure them and see whether those ratings are still (or ever
were) any good. Those numbers change a _lot_ over the life of a
battery. You need a carbon pile battery tester to do that, though.

What would cause water (turned to ice by the following AM here)
accumulate
in the driver's side of the trunkthe depressed area right behind
the

wheel well?

As often as not it's the taillight seal. Water runs down the trunk
channel
and onto the taillight, and thence into the rear of the trunk. Glub,
glub.

It's easy to test by looking with a hose or other water source.

Interesting you should say that. One of the senior techs at my dealer told me
recently that when the 220D's were new, he changed a lot of their engines
under warranty. I didn't ask him why at the time.

I don't recall now whether it was a casting problem or a metallurgy
problem, but there was an accelerated wear problem that afflicted at
least some of the '68-69 diesel engines. By 1970 (maybe a little sooner)
the problem seemed to have been controlled.

I think its a little of column a, a little of column b and even a bit of column
c.

I've been using 15w50 oil which is probably a bit thick for this weather but
it leaks less.
I forgot about putting the multimeter on to check resistance, I'll check that
tonight. The battery charger dropped to 2a within about 15 min indicating to me
that the cold and the inverter had just taken the surface charge off the
battery and the block heater had done nothing. I've never been able to hear the
block heater make any sound but invariably when I'm listening theres a million
cars driving by.

When the starter was dying I was using 3rd to start with, todays shot with

Finally this car has had this battery for the 3 years I've had it and I've
run it pretty flat a couple times which can't have helped it. Supposedly the
battery was brand new when I got the car but who knows what that really means.
I should pick up a new one. However I'm replacing the car soon with Dory (which
has a 1000cca battery vs Hammie's 900cca) so I'm somewhat loathe to spend any
money on Hammie. Of course that means the next owner will have to, since Hammie
is already sold (pretty much anyway) I should probably just do it, I don't
think my Indy would charge me a tremendous amount to put a new heater in...

On a battery it should be very easy to tell. The heater draws 400W
more or less and should have removed roughly 33 AH from your battery,
which would be in the 85-100 AH rating. A serious drain in other
words.
Your battery charger could tell you after the fact. At a 10A recharge
rate (high) it should take something like four hours or more to
replenish the battery. Much less than that and it's apparent that
your block heater is not up to snuff.

Also, the block heater should measure only in the tens of ohms range
via multimeter, and when operating often makes a sizzling sound.

Having roll-started more than my share (of gassers) in my 'yewt',
I'd say fourth gear was much too high a gear. We always did it
in second or third. Gotta get those revs up.

If you don't have a multimeter it's time to get one.

Other 'portable' ideas include a propane torch on the intake
manifold or a hair drier pointed into the intake air horn
while starting, assuming your battery/inverter is up to
the 1kW+ load of the typical hair drier. I use a heat gun
(garage hair drier/cigarette lighter) on my Unimog (which
has no glow plugs). It works.

Rear window seal or tail light seal. Seat back panel has to screws at

And another question...the panel on the back of the passinger's seat has
fallen off. No clue has to how it happened. Do they just snap back on, or
are there some screws and/or clips that keep them in place.
