I've never heard of any charges in a hunting accident not involving
trespass or death, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

I also can't recall criminal charges in a vehicle crash that
didn't involve death, and usually only if alcohol, drugs, racing,
fleeing & eluding, or joy riding are involved. I do know somebody
who got put on a restricted license for a year because he fell
asleep and killed two people. He could only drive to and from
work during that year. I think he was criminally charged,
negligent driving causing death or similar, but I don't know
what he pled guilty to.

Thanks Marshall,

I was thinking $50 to 75 for the motor. 2-4 hours is ok for a first
attempt. I think i figured 4 hours to take out the heater in a 110/111 and
replace the short hoses between the valve and the core, and re-o-ring and
lube the valves and put new hoses through the firewall and put it all back
together. It was a good all day saturday project because I'd always find
other things to work on too. Great for one of those days like today when
it got up to 63 here in the tundra!

You need to remove the grillwork under the windshield, loosen the
section of firewall behind the engine to allow it to move forward,
remove the wiper assembly (5 nuts as I recall) and THEN open the blower
housing to get to the motor. First time I did one it took 4+ hours. I
finally got it down to a little more than 1/2 hour. I'd guess they'd
want $50-75 for a used blower motor (new is more than double that).

I believe the hard cams were a mid-year substitution in 1979 on 616
and 617. My 1979 was made in the summer of 79 and has the hard cam.
In 1980, the cams got more lift and duration, and rated power went
up about 10% across the line.

What year is your 116? I don't think the 116 ever got EGR, which
should make a 1980 feel stronger than the average 126 or 123 turbo.
My '79 w116 can peel out from a standing start, but isn't that fast,
it runs out of breath pretty quick at higher rpm. Gets 27 mpg at 80mph.

The rear window "defrost" 15 minute interval is controlled by the
combination relay located in the rear of the fuse box. It's N-10 and is
the BIG relay in the fusebox (and costs $100+ last time I checked). It
controls the intervals of the turn signals, wipers, defogger, hazard

They rarely go bad (most problems with them involve bad connection -

While on the subject of diesel Mercs, a bloke on the ozvets list posted
this

in regard to MB diesel ownership (I think the person who wrote drove a
240D).

How to tell if your Mercedes-Benz is a diesel:

1. While driving, you find that you really look forward to going downhill.

2. You need a more powerful radio - not to be cool, but just to hear it
over

the engine clatter.

3. You drive very carefully and defensively - you have learned that your
car

has "same-day throttle response".

4. You begin to suspect that your entire car runs on vacuum.

5. Your car inexplicably veers towards the exit when you drive by a truck
stop.

6. Your hands are always various shades of black.

7. You look in the rear view mirror frequently, to see how much black
smoke

you are putting out today.

8. When you buy fuel, the pump is always "around back", away from "normal"
people.

9. Someone mentions actor Allen Alda, and you think they are talking about
the wrench you use to adjust fuel ratios.

10. The parts guy at Mercedes stealership has been over to your house for
dinner.

11. Instead of "flooring it", you tend to say "all ahead flank!".

12. You are the only person in the neighborhood who think your car exhaust
smells good.

While on the subject of diesel Mercs, a bloke on the ozvets list posted this
in regard to MB diesel ownership (I think the person who wrote drove a
240D).

How to tell if your Mercedes-Benz is a diesel:

1. While driving, you find that you really look forward to going downhill.

2. You need a more powerful radio - not to be cool, but just to hear it over
the engine clatter.

3. You drive very carefully and defensively - you have learned that your car
has "same-day throttle response".

4. You begin to suspect that your entire car runs on vacuum.

5. Your car inexplicably veers towards the exit when you drive by a truck
stop.

6. Your hands are always various shades of black.

7. You look in the rear view mirror frequently, to see how much black smoke
you are putting out today.

Nope. I never heard of charges, not even when bicycle
racer Greg LeMond was turkey hunting with his idiot
brother in law, who thought he was a turkey and shot him.

The "pellet lodged near the heart" seems surprising,
considering that the small shot you use on quail is
finer than you'd use on pheasants, much, much smaller
than Greg got shot with. (Lemond had a #2 pellet IN
his heart IIRC, but #8 dove&quail ammo is very small
and limited in penetration capability)

Actually, I kinda think it did hurt his political career. He'd probably
have been a serious Presidential candidate at some point if not for
that. I agree he should have faced more consequences -- the law is
always different for the rich and powerful. But now we have a right-wing
media echo chamber that would have made sure he was taken down. There's
no corresponding force working against Republicans. Heck, look at all
the abuse Clinton took over Vince Foster's death, and he didn't even
have anything personally to do with that.

If any of us did it, charges would be filed. I'm willing to bet that
even if this man dies (and he did have a mild heart attack today, due to

I believe that can relate to the version of Adobe Acrobat that's
installed on the machine (or perhaps how it's configured). I believe
that ver. 3 was what was on the CD and there were problems when Ver 4
and 5 were installed on some operating systems (98 and ME as I recall).
I haven't experience any problem in 4-5 years.

I can't offer a precise solution, but fooling around with the Acrobat
reader and it's implementation with the browser MIGHT off a solution.

his daughters neighbors car but he used to own it. We believe it has a dead

the battery -

It's in very good condition w/150k miles IIRC, and we'd just like someone to
get it who will take care of it and get some use out of it. It's yellow
with brown interior IIRC - and they're asking $500 but would probably take
$300.

Let me know if you want more info -

Subject: [MBZ] CD-ROM problem

Hi all,

A friend is trying to run the W126 service manual on CD-ROM, and is
having some problems. I'm trying to troubleshoot over the phone with
no luck. He gets past the intro movie, and into the model/year
selection, and to the function group & sub-function... but when
selecting the actual job from the right side window, where it should
launch the PDF file, he's getting an Internet Explorer error "Action
canceled". Does anyone recognize this? I walked him through installing
the required Shockwave plugin, and Acrobat Reader v7, but still no
luck. If anyone has been through a similar scenario and has some tips,
that would be VERY helpful...

Thanks!

:-)

All 123 chassis diesels had iron heads. The 1987 300D was a different
chassis, and had the six cylinder alluminum head OM603 engine.
240D (om616) and 300D (om617) were all iron heads. Starting
1981, the 300TD wagon had a turbocharger, starting in 1982 the
sedan and coupe got the turbo OM617.

You can have him try Firefox for the browser, and there is an extension
he could try that renders .pdf as html in the browser (I just saw it the
other day and have not tried it yet). Or try AA from Firefox. IE does
not always play well with others straightaway, there might be some
settings buried in the Options menu somewhere to make it work.

TPWD incident report pins the blame squarely on Cheney.

http://online.wsj.com/public/article/washington_wire.html
Monday, Feb. 13

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's incident report on Vice President
Dick Cheney's accidental shooting of a hunting partner Saturday pins the
blame largely on Cheney.

In evaluating "contributing factors," the game warden checked off the box:
"Victim covered by shooter who was swinging on game." In its summary, the
report says that 78-year-old Harry Whittington "downed a bird and went to
retrieve it. While he was out of the hunting line another covey was flushed
and Cheney swung on a bird and fired striking Whittington in the face, neck
and chest at approximately 30 yards."

Lydia Saldaña, spokeswoman for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, said
Cheney would also receive a warning citation because he did not have the
proper "upland game bird stamp" required to hunt quail, but that he would
not be fined.

The game warden's report contradicts earlier claims from the White House and
Katharine Armstrong, the owner of the Texas ranch where the shooting
occurred. Earlier Monday, the White House cited Armstrong's view that
Whittington was at fault. "She pointed out that the protocol was not
followed by Mr. Whittington when it came to notifying the others that he was
there," said White House spokesman Scott McClellan.

Some hunting groups chastised the vice president. "It's incumbent upon the
shooter to assess the situation and make sure it's a safe shot," Mark
Birkhauser, president-elect of the International Hunter Education
Association, told the Associated Press.

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times, the paper that first broke the story,
identified the third hunter in the party as Pamela Willeford, the U.S.
Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein and a former chairman of the
Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Cheney's office would not confirm
the report that Willeford was the third hunter. --Christopher Conkey

no reason to expect that someone was there. In this type of hunting,
that's how it is. No laws broken, except perhaps another supporting
observation for Darwinism. It was an accident, which happen in many and

The permit he didn't have was recently newly instituted, TDFW says many
hunters do not yet know about it, so if they are found without the
permit they get a small fine and the sticker. It's no big deal, like a
parking ticket. Yeah, he should have known (or somebody should have)
but it hardly ranks up there with murder by the imperial class.

engine up to operating temp, and pull the injectors (cold compression
readings are notoriously unreliable and variable - Mercedes only
publishes warm values).

Anyone else need this? Generator engine?

Speaking of that, I've got another generator project
germinating, and am keeping an eye out for a perfect
donor car. Probably a 190D with slushbox is best, because
I'm after run-time economy, and quietness under low loads,
and the generator is a 6-pole 1200 RPM job. I was just
thinking of using the cruise actuator to run the motor
and let the tranny do its shifting thing however it wants
to. I'm unsure if a 2.2 will cut it, but surely a 2.5
would. I'm betting the 2.2 would be fine. Now I just
have to find one like the last one I bought: $350 (though
the tranny was dead).

[MBZ] CD-ROM problem

2006-02-14 Thread Dave M.

Thanks!

Re: [MBZ] Hyundai vs MB

2006-02-14 Thread Curt Raymond
Lessee in the nearly 3 years I've had this job I've had several rentals,
There was an '04 Kia Optima, '04 Chevy Malibu Classic, '04 Dodge Neon, '05
Nissan Sentra, '05 Nissan Altima, '05 Chevy Cobalt, '05 Pontiac Grand Am, '05
Honda Civic (some sort of sporty edition), '05 Dodge Caravan (almost forgot
this one it was so memorable), '06 Dodge Neon, '06 Mazda 6. Theres at least one
more in there, I remember the trip but not what I had for a car, possibly
another Neon.
The ones that really stick out in my head:

The Kia which had a form of tiptronic trans that was pretty fun to drive. Gas
mileage was a stinky 25ishmpg but I was driving the stink out of it playing
with the tiptronic.

The Malibu Classic which was a surprisingly good car, looked sort of like a
cross between the new Cavalier and the old Corsica. Got a satisfying 35mpg.

The Cobalt which was the worst car I've ever had, everything about it was
wrong. It had no power, lousy mileage and ergonomics apparently designed
specifically not for me. Where ever I expected a switch or control to be was
exactly where it wasn't.

The Altima was my favorite rental ever until I drove the Mazda 6. The Mazda
had every control in exactly the right place, perfect balance of power and
control, plenty of space and decent economy for a larger car.
#3 favorite was the Civic which was a good car to have in LA, powerful but
small I slid it through traffic with no worries.

When I went looking for a new car I considered first the Mazda, then the
Nissan and Honda, then saved my money and got my 190D.

I would agree that a buyer of a Hyundai is not expecting an MB but I
assume
they are sort of expecting something similar to a Honda / Toyota. My
recollection is that buyers of both of those brands are generally
pretty
happy. Can't blame the current MB buyers for expecting something above
and
beyond the ordinary given the history, the old reputation and the cost.
Too
bad they don't get it in so many cases.

I'll stick with the old MB. Friends have an 01 E430 4Matic and it is
truly
beautiful but I don't think I could afford the costs after warranty ran
out.

Of course, I have a couple of Toyotas and they have not been without
their
wrinkles either. I sort of expected better given the hype.

[MBZ] MB Tex verses Kevlar

"Often, the majority of the people in the community do NOT want WalMarts,

I could be wrong, and it is in these peoples rights to oppose a WalMart just
like you would a landfill coming into your community, but I would harbor
to guess the folks opposing these are often (and this is a hunch) yuppified
, ak rich type communities (Greenwich CT for example) who can afford to
"preserve" their lifestyle. In the east (maybe mid west, south and west can
chime in), I have heard some of the other folks opposing it are some of the
towns in New England, who have their noses so far up in the air it blocks
the sunlight. Often these towns are on a quest to keep the "original
beauty" an feel of a quaint village (Many of those New England old towns
were dumps in the height of the industrial revolution) Every try to rent or
buy property near those places?, forget it. The billionaires are making it
tough for the millionaires.

Is it safe to assume that you support the democratic rights of those in
the
many communities who have voted to ban Walmart and other big box
retailers?

Often, the majority of the people in the community do NOT want WalMarts,
but

in order to keep them out, they have to organize and pass popular
initiatives.

OTOH, nobody has to vote to let a WalMart INTO their community, so the
idea
that the presence of a WalMart is a manifestation of the democratic
process

has its flaws, IMO.

I agree with Paul on this. Wal-Mart is in the communities because the

at Wal-Mart.

The masses may be wrong, but if we believe in democracy they have this
right. Otherwise, let us put our cards on the table and admit that we
think some sort of benevolent dictatorship (monarchy, oligarchy,

the other stupid, stupid argument i hear is the low wages they pay their

Re: [MBZ] No more jobs in Seattle

2006-02-14 Thread Loren Faeth
As far as I know, there have not been any jobs in seattle since 2000, (at
least if you believe the whining) With the rain and influx of CA loonies,
who'd want to live there?

David, he could never get a job in Washington. The state, not that
hell hole on the Potomac. He has to go back to OK and play with
horses. Maybe he could get a job in Enumclaw. No, not there either,
the dems have outlawed animal loving too.
