Larry - as long as the glow cycle works OK, and the engine starts right up
on 1 or 2 compression strokes, I'd leave the GPs as they are. My 2.5 (1990)
still has the original glow plugs and injectors, and they work just fine
after 221k miles. A good Italian tune-up once in a while wouldn't hurt,
either. Bring it out to V.I.R. the next time the Washington section holds
an event there!
But I would strongly recommend switching all the lubes to synthetic
(Mobil1/Delvac1(truckSUV)) as soon as you can get to it. With proper care,
you should be good to go for at least another 100k miles, probably much more
if the service previously done was done well!

http://www.autotrader.com/

While I thought I wanted the 300D I found in NJ, we went by and looked at
a
91 300D with only 99k miles. Wanted my wife to see one in person. Since
it

had a price of $1 I passed as this was more than I wanted to pay. It
drove and looked very nice and best of all was just down the street a few
miles. As it turned out this was a wholesaler who liked to sell cars and
this one had been there for 40 days. I can only think the unusually high
price of diesel kept it from selling - diesel is more than premium gas
around here. We got together at $8k and saved myself a trip to NJ with
the

plane/train/drive back/day spent that went with it. Started it from cold
(although it;s in the 60s today) and the light went off after ~5 seconds
and
the car fired up instantly. Idled smoothly and evenly, shifted as it
should

and best of all (for the little woman) it was very quiet! Accelerated
nicely - especially once warmed up and downshifted as it should. Other
than

a rear view mirror needing replacement I didn;t see anything needing
immediate attention.

Plus, this car has less than 100k while the other had 160K. So we went
with
this one -- will pick it up Saturday. I did a search of 91-93 300D in a
50

mile range of 23831 zip - it;s at Hyman Auto and is pearl gray with a gray
interior. Comes with all books, has a new spare, the tool kits looks like
its all there also. Climate control worked as did the radio and
everything

else as far as I went.

One thing I'm curious about. Air bags are critical to surviving an
accident - my wife lived because of the air bag she had when she was in a
wreck last Oct - but I'm not sure how you *know* they're still ready and
willing to fire should the need arise. Does the car do a self test of
the

air bag to make sure it';s working?

At 99k miles the GPs might be getting long in the tooth. What;s the best
way to test them? Resistance? what value should they have? I'll switch
to
Mobil 1 after putting 3000 on this oil. And will change the serpentine
belt

if needed - although it looked like it was in very good condition. What
kind of fuese does it use? The old ceramic ones? I know, once it's in my
driveway I'll discover many of these things ---

Anything else I should plan on doing?

Later --

I got Cathy a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. While I was away, Her
beloved 116 was having some problems and we really could use a 4WD in
winter. Anyway, its a '95 w/full-time 4WD or AWD (whatever the correct
nomenclature).
Every now and then the info display on the dash shows a service 4WD
Switch warning. 4WD is definitely working and neither of us has moved
the transfer case lever. The 3 transfer case options are the normal
high range position, neutral or 4WD Low range. I plan to look for a bad
connection or wire and possibly remove and inspect/clean the switch.
Anyone have experience with these, I sure don't.
I'm also looking for info on resetting error codes/computer and also
wondering if anyone knows of any part-time 4WD conversions. I'm going
to check Warn on-line for a kit. I was told by someone that I don't
consider an authority that it can't be done.

[MBZ] Blue Bomber running

Started it tonight after work. It sounds like something is loose
somewhere, a metal on metal knocking sound. I reved it up to around
2300rpm and the noise went away, and it sounds like a finely tuned MB
diesel. What knocking sounds might be present in the sub 1200rpm range
that go away above that? I recorded the sound, so I can send it out if
the sight/sound will help.

does it sound like a nailing injector? The blue 300D (a 78) did that so
bad I felt bad driving it home after it was bought, but knew that's what

The trick with W123T hatch struts is HEAT on the torx bolts; W124

hard to remove if cold, but heating it makes the whole thing a lot
easier and avoids stripping the bolt heads.

IIRC, Marshall has weighed in on this topic in the past.

2006-02-17 Thread Jim Cathey

A nice diesel with under 100K miles for $8K is a rare find.
It's a lot better than my $100 junker that's not going anywhere yet.

Ah, but is it 80 _times_ better? Probably not, and to lots of
us that is a factor. It's nice when you can afford the best
ride possible (relatively speaking), but many must (and may)
be happy with the best _valued_ ride possible. All part of
the rich pageant, so to speak. Few would be all that happy
with the steaming pile that is the $100 Frankenheap, yet to
me a large part of its charm is the fact that it only cost
$100 in the first place. (To be fair I've probably put another
$200 into it since, not counting enhancements like the lighting
and preheating system.) It's great fun knowing you've already
put more into it in fuel than in capital expenditure.

One thing I'm curious about. Air bags are critical to surviving an
accident - my wife lived because of the air bag she had when she was
in a
wreck last Oct - but I'm not sure how you *know* they're still ready
and
willing to fire should the need arise. Does the car do a self test
of the

air bag to make sure it's working?

The SRS system self-tests at each start, but obviously the
test can only do so much. It does test the continuity of the
squibs, at least. But whether or not they'll go BANG when
they need to? That's an open-loop question. But I believe
they're rated for 15 years, and probably will work well beyond
that.

At 99k miles the GPs might be getting long in the tooth. What's the
best

way to test them? Resistance? what value should they have?

0.6 ohms for the mid-80's ones.

That jeep has a full time transfercase. To not blow things up on dry
pavement, the transfercase has a center differential to allow front to rear
slippage. It is either a limited slip or viscous coupler, neither of which
takes too kindly to the front shaft going away.

The hatch lid of a 124.193 had a latching motor. That's all it does -

The hatch has struts that's supposed to hold it open. There have been

Interesting! One thing I've learned the hard way is that motor oil will

My brother, a diesel fleet mechanic, once had a knucklehead service

That'd be pretty impressive. Most diesels refuse to run well enough to
be drivable with straight gasoline in the tank.

I *don't* think gasoline in the tank would blow out glow plugs. The
energy content of gasoline is actually *lower* than that of diesel. The
problem isn't that gasoline is too explosive, it's that gasoline is too
thin for the clearances in most injector pumps, so the timing and fuel
quantity are wrong.

body. The body doesn't appear to have any corresponding holes down
there, so I assumed I'd need to drill some. I suspect the factory
holes are square, to accomodate a plastic expansion socket, or some
such thing. I still need to figure out what mounting hardware all the
panels require, as some is missing, or may be different than the stuff
already on the body. Also, I need to figure out what the color code
is for the paint on the panels, as I'd like to re-paint them and my
bumpers to match--they're sort of a bluish-silver-grey, if that makes
 any sense.

 Thanks,
 Casey

Mobil-1 Truck SUV Formula (5W-40) appears to be AWOL at Wall-Mart. I
was there tonight and not only is there none in sight, there's no
longer a spot on the shelf for that variety, either. I didn't see
anything in a 40 or 50 weight at all, but I didn't look that hard for

Exhaust systems, in particular, can cause some really interesting
rattles that are frustrating to track down. So can bad air cleaner

diesel layer on top and the clouded biodiesel on the bottom. It would thus
appear that the B80 mix might flow acceptably after sloshed around in the tank

I'm *not* a fan of Monark plugs. The one set I got a few years ago
didn't last long, and I wasn't running afterglow at the time, either.
I'd have to double-check my records, but I think I lost 2 of 6 plugs
within 3 years and 30kmi... an embarassingly short life span.

I'm not crazy about some Bosch items that are made off-shore, but in
general, I still think Bosch makes decent stuff and should be prety
close to Beru. I wouldn't touch Autolite, but I'd take a Bosch over
Monark any day. I currently have Bosch Duraterm Chromium in my 603
(special import from Europe - dunno why they won't sell them in the
USA), but used the plain ol' Bosch #80006 for my dad's 603 and my old
617 with good results. I've also done the full factory afterglow setup
on my 603, with the 60-second maximum afterglow, not the later
180-second max (which I think is a bit excessive).

For stuff like oil fiters, though, I'd rather avoid Bosch. In their
defense, my buddy just picked up a Bosch oil filter for his VW diesel
and it was Made in Germany! I was quite surprised, I was expecting
it to be Hecho in Zimbabwe or something...

:-)

bosch glow plugs for my '92 ford diesel pickup . They were made in Japan
and the darn things lasted all of a week before it started getting hard
to start, within a month most of them were shot.General knowlage on the

everything else is toast in a month, but I didn't believe it. Live and

I was quite surprised, I was expecting
it to be Hecho in Zimbabwe or something...

if bosch doesn't float your boat, beru and monark both make glow plugs. i
particularly like the monarks, although they don't enjoy much support on
this list. as a general rule, i find bosch products below beru in terms of
quality.

i have no experience with ngk glow plugs, but their spark plugs are the
bomb.

it is time to start saying no to bosch where practical. your benz will

The symptoms suggest the clutch either isn't engaging enough to allow
shifting - which checking the hydraulics as you describe should help - or
possibly a warped flywheel. If all the hydraulic repairs don't fix it, that
would be somthing to check. Not expensive to actually repair - usually $40
or $50 at a machine shop, but of course, getting to it means removing the
tranny - then you get into the Well, while we're in here we might as
well you know the rest.

Was the tank level very low? Perhaps there's some junk near the bottom of
the tank and yit got picked up and sent to the filters IP?

As you no doubt know, the diesel will run as long as its getting air and
fuel - for fun check the air filter although you probably know its in good
condition or changed it recently - still, its possible although restricted
air inlet usually shows as restricted RPMs - (can't rev above, say, 3000rpm)
so as everyone else (except Kaleb) suggests it fuel, I'll vote for the same
source of the problem.

The last fill-up may have been bad or had a high level of moisture in it ---
worst case, drain the tank, check the outlet strainer (I assume it has one)
and replace the other fuel filters. Even if you have to get a shop to do it
while on the road shouldn;t be outrageously expensive.

Perhaps someone on the list can suggest a shop in your area? Since its
Friday, today it your best bet if you need help or parts -

Man! I hate these semi-mysterious problems!

 Bioguys,

I conducted a small experiment on the clouded bio in my tank. I drew a
small sample and mixed it with some #2 diesel to form B80, and left it out
overnight in mid-20s temps. Next morning, the fuel had separated with the
#2 diesel layer on top and the clouded biodiesel on the bottom. It would
thus appear that the B80 mix might flow acceptably after sloshed around in
the tank but if left to settle overnight, the bio might clog the filters in
 the morning.

2006-02-17 Thread l02turner

Howdy -
This is probably a dumb question -- is the 91 300D considered a W124
chassis? What is the engine and trans type numbers?

Getting ready to order some filters and such - just want to make sure I do
it right - Rusty's sale is happening at the right time! The seller says the
oil was just changed and he's getting the records of what else was changed -

Anyway - I appreciate the help --

[MBZ] 230TE

2006-02-17 Thread William 'Chip' Lamb
Just bought an '80 230TE M102/4spd man. from a pilot pal of mine in MD.
(I'm fast becoming a wagon connoisseur with a number of eclectic Estates,
and I've always liked quirky Grey Market cars). As expected it had a droopy
rear. Started tearing into it yesterday. Pump is dead. I had ordered in
spheres so I did those yesterday, and am waiting on a pump from a friend
who took apart a TD a while back. Spheres in the car had the star on 'em,
probably original or ancient dealer replacements, which means this thing's
been dragging for some time no doubt. Surprisingly the lines et.c. came
apart well in the back. I cleaned the reservoir, fitted a new filter to the
cap and made a new hose to the pump out of Power Steering hose since the
old hose was rotten to the core.

Debating doing the struts for a comprehensive job since everything has
probably been empty for some time. Should be nice when done, car drives
quite well for a 26 year old wagon and the M102 has plenty of power in Euro
trim.

Thanks to Kaleb for having a good list here and for having a nice d. side
taillamp lens for me on eBay last night. We'll get there.

Re: [MBZ] Bosch vs NGK (was exploding glow plugs)

Thanks for the replies regarding the exploding glow plugs, all. I'm still
waiting to check the car myself.

I've been concerned about Bosch glow plugs (80006) for a while now, and once
heard a while ago that Bosch which made SPARK plugs for MB for a long time
was superceeded with NGK spark plugs, due to inferior quality drop after the
production of Bosch plugs was sent to Brazil. Could this be relevant to
Bosch glow plugs as well? I plan on trying the NGK plugs (2237) though
about 25% more cost.

Anyone use them or know anything about these rumours?

One of my suppliers says the Bosch application come with a big fat warranty
disclaimer now, something about overloading or something.

Bosch and Beru glow plugs have been and remain the standard by which
others are judged (and most of the other have been reported to be VERY
inferior). I have NEVER had a Bosch or Beru plug fail prematurely (in
less than 100kmi) unless there was some clear engine or electrical
problem that caused it. I can't say that about any other brand that I've
tried (Monark, AutoLite, noname). There is no stream of reports of Bosch
or Beru failures coming in from the guys that service MB diesels
routinely. The newer plugs subjected to after start glow may fail
sooner as plug failure is correlated with the duration and temperature
and the new systems are on longer, reach maximum temperature faster and
remain there MUCH longer so failures at 50-75kmi in OM606 engines
confined to a city commute are not unusual but NOT the result of
inferior plug construction or design.

if bosch doesn't float your boat, beru and monark both make glow plugs. i
particularly like the monarks, although they don't enjoy much support on
this list. as a general rule, i find bosch products below beru in terms of
quality.

i have no experience with ngk glow plugs, but their spark plugs are the
bomb.

even thought they've given me a leatherman, coffee mug and calendar, I think
it is time to start saying no to bosch where practical. your benz will
never be bosch free, but every little bit counts.

Every Monark glow plug I've ever tried (some 12-14 of 'em) have failed
in less than 20kmi. In one case the old Bosch plugs that had come out
(after 100-150kmi) were used to replace the Monarks and the old ones
were working fine 40kmi later when new replacement Bosch went in.
