Re: [MBZ] Bought a Different 300D
Larry - as long as the glow cycle works OK, and the engine starts right up on 1 or 2 compression strokes, I'd leave the GPs as they are. My 2.5 (1990) still has the original glow plugs and injectors, and they work just fine after 221k miles. A good Italian tune-up once in a while wouldn't hurt, either. Bring it out to V.I.R. the next time the Washington section holds an event there! But I would strongly recommend switching all the lubes to synthetic (Mobil1/Delvac1(truckSUV)) as soon as you can get to it. Re: [MBZ] 87 300TD hatch door
The trick with W123T hatch struts is HEAT on the torx bolts; W124 will probably be similar. The bolt threadlock is heat-sensitive; VERY hard to remove if cold, but heating it makes the whole thing a lot easier and avoids stripping the bolt heads. A nice diesel with under 100K miles for $8K is a rare find. It's a lot better than my $100 junker that's not going anywhere yet. Ah, but is it 80 _times_ better? Probably not, and to lots of us that is a factor. It's nice when you can afford the best ride possible (relatively speaking), but many must (and may) be happy with the best _valued_ ride possible. All part of the rich pageant, so to speak. Few would be all that happy with the steaming pile that is the $100 Frankenheap, yet to me a large part of its charm is the fact that it only cost $100 in the first place. (To be fair I've probably put another $200 into it since, not counting enhancements like the lighting and preheating system.) It's great fun knowing you've already put more into it in fuel than in capital expenditure. -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] Bought a Different 300D
One thing I'm curious about. Air bags are critical to surviving an accident - my wife lived because of the air bag she had when she was in a wreck last Oct - but I'm not sure how you *know* they're still ready and willing to fire should the need arise. Does the car do a self test of the air bag to make sure it's working? The SRS system self-tests at each start, but obviously the test can only do so much. It does test the continuity of the squibs, at least. But whether or not they'll go BANG when they need to? That's an open-loop question. But I believe they're rated for 15 years, and probably will work well beyond that. At 99k miles the GPs might be getting long in the tooth. What's the best way to test them? Resistance? what value should they have? 0.6 ohms for the mid-80's ones. -- Jim

One thing I've learned the hard way is that motor oil will leak right through Ziploc bags. I once stuffed an oozy, used oil filter from a VW diesel into a Ziploc bag, to keep it neat until I could dispose of it properly, then set it on the porch and forgot about it for a few weeks. I ended up with a nice black oil stain, even though the bag still seemed to be intact.

I think this is supposed to combine with their flower-like new logo to make them seem more environmental. My brother, a diesel fleet mechanic, once had a knucklehead service driver run two complete tanks of gas through a Ford 6.3 diesel, with no ill effects, tho I wouldn't recommend it. That'd be pretty impressive. Most diesels refuse to run well enough to be drivable with straight gasoline in the tank. I *don't* think gasoline in the tank would blow out glow plugs. The energy content of gasoline is actually *lower* than that of diesel. The problem isn't that gasoline is too explosive, it's that gasoline is too thin for the clearances in most injector pumps, so the timing and fuel quantity are wrong.

We drove to Albuquerque from OKC today - just got here. After the final ten miles at only 65mph, I pulled off I-40 at my exit, came to a stop light, where the engine promptly died. [MBZ] Cloudy Biodiesel
Bioguys, I conducted a small experiment on the clouded bio in my tank. I drew a small sample and mixed it with some #2 diesel to form B80, and left it out overnight in mid-20s temps. Next morning, the fuel had separated with the #2 diesel layer on top and the clouded biodiesel on the bottom. It would thus appear that the B80 mix might flow acceptably after sloshed around in the tank but if left to settle overnight, the bio might clog the filters in the morning. My wifes '83 240D clutch won't release. I replaced the master and slave cylinders, bled them with a pressure bleeder, and feel that the clutch is depressing the way it previously has. Before this happened the clutch would have to be depressed all the way to the floor in order to shift the transmission. My wife had cancer and recently died. The last time she drove it, it would not go into 3rd or 4th gear so she drove home in 2nd. The car sat for about a year after that. When I recently tried to move it from the garage to the shop, the clutch would not release. Thinking the disc might be stuck, I tried jerking the car with the starter without success. How about $2.64 each ( $1.19 ea for generic brand ) and real cheap prices on the wired plugs http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage.cfm?DID=7WebPage_ID=3 Best price I've found for the things and they have great prices on other electronic goodies too. --Robert Dave M. wrote: Anyone know a decent source for cube relays, you know, the generic little black boxes? Re: [MBZ] '83 240D clutch won't work
The symptoms suggest the clutch either isn't engaging enough to allow shifting - which checking the hydraulics as you describe should help - or possibly a warped flywheel. If all the hydraulic repairs don't fix it, that would be somthing to check. Not expensive to actually repair - usually $40 or $50 at a machine shop, but of course, getting to it means removing the tranny - then you get into the Well, while we're in here we might as well you know the rest. Re: [MBZ] '90 300D 2.5 died on me
Was the tank level very low? Perhaps there's some junk near the bottom of the tank and yit got picked up and sent to the filters IP? As you no doubt know, the diesel will run as long as its getting air and fuel - for fun check the air filter although you probably know its in good condition or changed it recently - still, its possible although restricted air inlet usually shows as restricted RPMs - (can't rev above, say, 3000rpm) so as everyone else (except Kaleb) suggests it fuel, I'll vote for the same source of the problem. The last fill-up may have been bad or had a high level of moisture in it --- worst case, drain the tank, check the outlet strainer (I assume it has one) and replace the other fuel filters. Even if you have to get a shop to do it while on the road shouldn;t be outrageously expensive. Perhaps someone on the list can suggest a shop in your area? [MBZ] 230TE
Just bought an '80 230TE M102/4spd man. from a pilot pal of mine in MD. (I'm fast becoming a wagon connoisseur with a number of eclectic Estates, and I've always liked quirky Grey Market cars). As expected it had a droopy rear. Started tearing into it yesterday. Pump is dead. I had ordered in spheres so I did those yesterday, and am waiting on a pump from a friend who took apart a TD a while back. Spheres in the car had the star on 'em, probably original or ancient dealer replacements, which means this thing's been dragging for some time no doubt. Surprisingly the lines et.c. came apart well in the back. I cleaned the reservoir, fitted a new filter to the cap and made a new hose to the pump out of Power Steering hose since the old hose was rotten to the core. Debating doing the struts for a comprehensive job since everything has probably been empty for some time. Should be nice when done, car drives quite well for a 26 year old wagon and the M102 has plenty of power in Euro trim. Thanks to Kaleb for having a good list here and for having a nice d. side taillamp lens for me on eBay last night. We'll get there. _ Cheers- William Chip Lamb West of Sweden SAAB Richmond, VA. http://www.wmsbrg.com/sweden/ __

I've been concerned about Bosch glow plugs (80006) for a while now, and once heard a while ago that Bosch which made SPARK plugs for MB for a long time was superceeded with NGK spark plugs, due to inferior quality drop after the production of Bosch plugs was sent to Brazil. Could this be relevant to Bosch glow plugs as well? I plan on trying the NGK plugs (2237) though about 25% more cost. Anyone use them or know anything about these rumours? One of my suppliers says the Bosch application come with a big fat warranty disclaimer now, something about overloading or something. Bosch and Beru glow plugs have been and remain the standard by which others are judged (and most of the other have been reported to be VERY inferior). I have NEVER had a Bosch or Beru plug fail prematurely (in less than 100kmi) unless there was some clear engine or electrical problem that caused it. I can't say that about any other brand that I've tried (Monark, AutoLite, noname). There is no stream of reports of Bosch or Beru failures coming in from the guys that service MB diesels routinely. The newer plugs subjected to after start glow may fail sooner as plug failure is correlated with the duration and temperature and the new systems are on longer, reach maximum temperature faster and remain there MUCH longer so failures at 50-75kmi in OM606 engines confined to a city commute are not unusual but NOT the result of inferior plug construction or design.
