repairs on mine and customer cars with that stuff. It's costy, but it

I don't have a UPS but everything had surge protectors. I think
lightning was a little more than what they were designed for.

Nothing stops lightning, but the surge induced by nearby strikes
can possibly be blocked by a (good) surge protector. Close enough,
though, and it either fries the stuff directly, or induces enough
EMF in the cables and such to do harm. _All_ the cables, including
internal ones.

Hi Dwight,
Yeah, ours sound very similar. I'm the 2nd owner (if you don't count the
car dealer that bought it at auction) and so far I couldn't be happier. I
had an initial cold start problem which I suspect was probably a fuel
quality issue. I've changed both fuel filters and added some biocide along
with plenty of fresh fuel.

About the color of mine - it's a metallic bluish-silver - if that makes any
sense ;-) mostly it's blue, but not a dark blue. I'll have to look thru my
color charts to see what it's called.

Drove it to Williamsburg and back this morning (about 150miles total)- a
beautiful day for a drive, 72F and sunny - the 300D ran perfectly and I
really like the climate control system! Of course, I haven't had to do any
work to the automatic part of it - hopefully I won;t for a long time. ;-)

BTW, bought the Biocide from West Marine - made by CRC I got 3 bottles for
~$7 each. Ordered it Thurs and it arrived Wednesday...

Sorry, I forgot to mention the asking price of the W124 '91 300D 2.5

Turbo that I just bought was $9900 and I offered $8K which he accepted.
Bought it from a wholesaler who had this car for 44 days - I'm told they

like to move their cars more often than that - I think he was dealing
because he'd had it for a while. I'm in love with this car and only
like it
more and more - I haven't found any significant problems except for an
intermittant cold starting problem (happened 2 times in 3 weeks) which I

contribute to a lack of being driven regularily. Since filling with
fresh
fuel the problem seems to be gone (knock wood). The seller put 1/4 tank
in
before I picked it up and I'm not aware of any stations in his area that

gets a lot of diesel traffic - so the fuel may have been 'off'.

Yes.

Also, what is the reason behind the owner's manual instructing us
to pump
the pedal to the floor three times prior to engaging the starter
(for cold

conditions)?

I don't know but I will guess that it is to make sure the linkage
returns and the internals are released from the last shut-down. There
is Motor oil in the IP, earlier models have their own supply which
must be topped off occasionally,( your 1983 uses the oil in your
engine) I think the fuel shut-off can hang up in the off position if
oil has the consistency of toothpaste. Another good reason to use
synthetic oil.

(BTW, yes, I think it says to hold it to the floor after the
three pumps) This sounds like the pumping of the pedal in a gasser
- the
function of which, of course, is to squirt a bunch of fuel down the
intake

to get things going.

To the best of my knowledge there is no fuel enrichment and no
squirting going on. The pump runs off of a camshaft directly, there
is one "pump" per cylinder and the camshaft determines the sequence
of injection.
It seems that you have a genuine interest in how this all works. The
IP is a highly technical device, if you have the desire for a more
technical description, get your hands on an MB engine manual and give
section 07 a good read where you will find more technical info.
Putting it all into words is beyond my abilities, the authors of the
manual, however, have done a wonderful job.
If my hp all-in-one didn't get fried by lightning, I would gladly

Larry,
That sounds about right. I have about 8k in my recently acquired 30D 2.5
t. Low miles, southern car, mint body & interior, two owners, etc. Some
of these have been going for 10K recently on e-bay. I think you'll love
driving it. BTW-what color is it? Is it white? Many of these seem to be.

Re: [MBZ] Block Heater Yes or no

2006-03-11 Thread Bill Gallagher
The advice I gave is in the New England area of the USA in the last
post. I am a frequent traveler to Quebec City and the advice is very
different your are entering into a very different climatic zone
with temps well below most parts of the US.
It recalls to me the Germany invasion of Russia in WW
two..Germany lacked the the requirement of a Russian winter from
clothing, oils for guns, grease in bearings, and the list is endless
.Temps at -30 to -40C are normal in Russia but not in Germany.
German equipment will not work or is very hard to operate.
Sometimes my car will start without over night block heater from
10F to -10F without a problem in Canada At some other times it will
not start plug in the block heater for 1 hour or less, motor starts
in a few seconds My process of starting in cold temps like Canada
is to glow plug cycle three times and attempt to start. If no start
cranking after 2 to 6 seconds, repeat the glow cycle again, but most of
the times it will not start . time for external heat source.
Pour hot water several times on the fuel lines, injector, and fuel
filters and it starts most of the time .or wait until the block
heater does it job.

Bill
1981 300 TD
p.s. no problem starting in places like Arizona, New Mexico, Africa,
South America without block heater.

very different climatic environment ..

My .02
First my credentials 300SD 1979 driving daily between
Montpelier VT and Montreal in up to (down to -30)
Ungaraged car. I used a block heater.
In most cases without it, won't start after overnight
But will start leaving at work w/o plug in. BUT
If plug available will use it.
Rationale: Even if you COULD "get by" without it,
Why not have the oil more warm and available.
Seems to me, cheap insurance on the engine life.

Cold Weather true story.
Once at Montreal Airport Hilton, the temp was about -40 which is the temp at
which Celsius and Farenheit scales are the same, which is also common
knowledge to anyone living in this region. It was really cold, and windy
too. I was waiting along with others in the lobby for some reason, and
various people would enter and a gust of frigid air would immediately negate
any effect the hotel's heating system had built up since the last entry.
The desk clerk was a bit of a clown. The temperature was a matter of public
knowledge that night. When one new patron entered, and exclaimed "Man it's
COLD out there". The clerk, innocently said, "How cold?". The person
entering said "Forty Below". The clerk, again innocently, "Is that Celsius
or Farenheit", baiting him for the expected reply, "It's the SAME". But
this patron obviously didn't know that, and instead exclaims, "Who Cares?",
which if you think about it, is a much better reply.

I do not advise feathering. Either make it run or not. If you want to
play with it, it will not start has been my empirical experience. The
wife had to start the e300d and tried the feathering stuff. Took us
far longer to get her to just accept stomping on it and keeping the
starter going until it caught fully. For some reason it wants fuel and
feathering does not deliver any amount of value. Gump will not even
consider making any starting noise if you feather.

That's always been my way of coaxing a cold gasser along.

And further, what is the actual effect of feathering the pedal on this
type
of system. Does depressing the pedal actually squirt fuel? Or simply
ratchet

up the IP? Or what? As I said yesterday, I understand the workings of a
carbureted gas engine, where there is a direct linkage between your

the accelerator pump which squirts fuel down the throats. But what
about

these diesel systems? Note: Those listers annoyed by such a simplistic,

2006-03-11 Thread OK Don
My '90 300D 2.5 had 243k miles (still shows that - odometer stopped
about 100 miles after purchase). I paid $4500 for it - no maintenance
history other than the it had good care for the three or four years
the PO (D. Snook) owned it. I think the engine is all original, and
the tranny probably is also. It needed several small things - engine
mounts, front exhaust pipe, fuel hoses, etc. I'm going to replace the
original vacuum pump this Fall (have to recover from re-building the
450SLC first). This car was meticulously maintained cosmetically, has
the later 8 hole wheels, and looks great. It drives extremely nicely,
though I can tell that it's probably due for rear end rubber parts,
but it's not too bad yet. It totally beats the 240D - and the 300Ds
(115) that preceded it, but is a different cat than the 300SDL. I have
to keep both the E class and S class. Love them both for different
reasons.
I can't wait to see what my reaction is to the 450SLC when I drive it
again after 2 years - will it match the 124 chassis for fun?

No - there is no cure - accept your fate, and enjoy the addiction! I
have sevferal times wished that I was transplanting a 603 engine into
the SLC instead of the original engine (117).

Re: [MBZ] Project 240D in Oregon

2006-03-11 Thread Jim Cathey

Today's progress. Speaking of glow plugs, it is possible to work
on and modify the old series-plug relay.

Replaced the horns. For whatever reason, both old ones were dead.
The vacuum tank had leaked down by morning, I don't suppose that is a
surprise.

I next tackled the glow plug relay, which has been having some
intermittent faults. (No light.) I opened the harness connector and
squeezed the sockets together a bit (to tighten them up) and hit them
with contact cleaner. I then burnished the pins on the relay and
opened it up to check the capacitor values. (It's interesting that
the current to the plugs is sensed via a 1-turn transformer around a
reed switch.) Two of the larger caps were bad, so I replaced them.
The big one (2200uF) that runs the light was OK, oddly enough.
Unfortunately while messing around on the bench I managed to slip with
a probe and blew up two diodes, one a 6.8V Zener. This took some time
to find! I had a junkbox 6.2V Zener, I call that close enough.
Anyway, after several hours of circuit tracing and head scratching I
got it back to where it was before I killed it. (We won't be
'billing' for that time!) The beauty of electronics from this age is
that there are rarely special parts inside, component-level repair is
entirely possible.

Next, check the timing. I want to try to extend it to the long side
to make up for the engine's age. It obviously needs a lot of preglow!
I dug some numbers out of the MB manual:

deg C deg F OhmsSpec. Measrd. Modified
- - - --- ---
-30 -22 45-65
-20 -4 35-54
-10 14 26-46
-5 23 30 nom.
0 32 850020-35 27 40
20 68 12 nom.
25 77 25008-169 15
80 176 300 0-4 0.5 1

On the bench with the resistance at 8500 Ohms the time was 27
seconds. The appropriate trim pot inside could make the light's time
shorter, but not any longer, so I paralleled an additional 1000uF
capacitor with the 2200uF one, which extended the light time to 40
seconds. (All that circuit tracing helped decide how best to do
this.) The glow timeout is about 150 seconds.

Anyway, after all this the time was better but the light was still
flakey on a test drive. (I was picking up chainsaw chains, and the
central locking worked fine when I tried it.) Back on the bench it
was sensitive to twisting and bending. So though I had resoldered
almost everything already I had not done the heavy relay and connector
pins, which are the most likely candidates as they are so big (cold).
I did those and then it was no longer sensitive to flexing. Back in
the car the light behaved as I'd expect. Whew!

I usually suggest that it's 50-80% depending on whom you read or
believe. Using an oil that flow more freely at cold temperatures reduces
and can almost eliminate cold start wear according to tribologists.

Also, what is the reason behind the owner's manual instructing us to pump
the pedal to the floor three times prior to engaging the starter (for cold
conditions)? (BTW, yes, I think it says to hold it to the floor after the
three pumps) This sounds like the pumping of the pedal in a gasser - the
function of which, of course, is to squirt a bunch of fuel down the intake
to get things going.

The greatest effect of pumping the pedal is to insure that the rack will
move freely. Much of the linkage within the injection pump (that
integrates pedal position, engine rpm, engine load, boost or atmospheric
pressure, etc.) involves springs and weights - NOT rigid linkage.
Pumping the pedal moves some parts from one extreme to the other thru
the engine oil and fuel that may be stiff and not permit free movement
without being "shaken up."

If you really want to know what's happening, Bosch has books describing
their operation. The mechanical injection pump is a complex, remarkable
device, made with great precision and capable of precise fuel metering
for 10s of thousands of hours. Few technicians actually understand their
fine points (I sure don't) and it requires very elaborate/expensive
tools to adjust them properly.

Re: [MBZ] w124 diesel value

2006-03-11 Thread Dave M.
If you do some searching for these nationwide, typical asking price is
between $7-$12k. So, buying one for $5k and spending a bit on repairs
wouldn't be unexpected. If it's clean and runs well, $5k is a really
good deal, IMO.

If anyone finds a 90-93 W124 diesel for sale - with ASD and heated
seats - I'm interested. Even better if it's somewhere on the west
coast. For some reason almost all of them are on the east coast, d'oh.

Hi Rick.
I bought my '91 300D about 3 weeks ago (2/17 IIRC) - it had ~99K miles and
is in excellent condition. My other MB is a '78 240D with 286k miles and
the difference that 13 years of constant improvement to diesel engines is
nothing short of phenomenal! It's *much * quieter, *much* faster and more
luxurious. Bought it for my wife to drive but I hate letting it go ;-) I
*love* driving it! Hearing the turbo roar and feeling it press me back in
the seat is addictive! Going back to the 240D is gonna be tough!

Starting in the early/mid '80s all US delivered diesels had block
heaters (but cords were dealer installed, often only if requested). Car

Johnny B.s 190D 2.5 and my 2.0 are Euro cars and were NOT equipped with

The hoops we jump through. I like your thought of aksing for an outlet
designed for disabled parking. Ooop, as I wrote this, it strikes me that you
must mean that you park beside the disabled spot, not in it obivously.

Looking for outlets reminds me of the time I took my Sportster for a trip
from Maryland to North Carolina. I had just installed a new Harley Davidson
battery, but I brought my battery charger just in case (as I'd been having
problems). Right at D.C., it started acting up - fortunately right by a rest
stop. I plugged my orange extension cord into an outlet on the side of the
building there (trailing it across the sidewalk and around the building).
That was what helped me limp it to the nearest HD service center (which I
found via pay phone - glad I had a calling card, 'cause I cel phones those
days were more a luxury). But in the mean time some worker at the rest stop
started threatening me that his boss would "cut my cord" if I didn't unplug
it. Sure enough, soon the big, bad manager guy showed up and threatened the
same. Why they were so bent on saving a few pennies in favor of letting
someone rescue themself, I'm not sure.

I always was under the impression that all the cars had block heater,
but not all cars had the cord. The e300d has no cord, but being cali
car did get a block heater. in L.A.

I do it for science. It is good to know how to get the car started
in the event of power failures ( which usually occur in Winter around
here) and how low you can go. I live where you live except they call
it New York over here.
I also run synthetic oil so my oil is always ready to be pumped. My
190D Euro has no block heater, it used to live in Florida. All of our
other MB diesels have block heaters. I will be installing one as well
as flushing the cooling system and refilling with G-05, when I get
around to it.
I mostly tell my cold start stories so some of the other folks on
the list can feel more secure about their cars starting when it gets
cold.
It seems to me that many who live in much warmer climes than you and
I have the greatest paranoia when it comes to cold starts. I hope to
ease their minds and reduce the stress that they endure as a result.

I am in a micro-climate that is plagued by subtle gusts of wind at the
most inopportune moments. I have ended up rattle can painting the

the booth would have allowed me to reduce by at least a can or two the

2006-03-11 Thread Zoltan Finks
Good to get all our cylinders in line. This brings me back to my question
from yesterday: What about feathering when the thing is just getting going?
That's always been my way of coaxing a cold gasser along.

And further, what is the actual effect of feathering the pedal on this type
of system. Does depressing the pedal actually squirt fuel? Or simply ratchet
up the IP? Or what? As I said yesterday, I understand the workings of a
carbureted gas engine, where there is a direct linkage between your foot and
the accelerator pump which squirts fuel down the throats. But what about
these diesel systems? Note: Those listers annoyed by such a simplistic,
basic question may simply delete - no need to get worked up.

On the Unimog it's a lot easier, since you can sit in the driver's

so the heat gun is unlikely to do any damage even if mishandled.
This'd be a lot harder on a car where, if alone, you'd have to

I think that changing sheet metal and the rad would be MUCH easier than
pulling the engine/tranny out of both cars and swapping them. It may
very
well have some hidden frame damage which would necessitate the

Usually you let the condition of the rust and paint determine
which is the donor, and what gets donated. Engine swaps are easy
compared to much bodywork. Tranny type swaps are also doable,
so long as it's not a column shift vs floor!
