Yeah, I saw similar results with my 83' 300D. I would assume Luther is
getting the results in some way similar to how I was when I got something
like 1600 miles to 17 gallons of diesel. That is by only using diesel long
enough to get up to 80C, and then a minute before shutdown and using WVO for
the rest of the driving. (:

I would like to wire a relay to feed 12V DC current to the monovalve to force it closed. So class, here is your homework assignment:What is the most convenient source of fuzed, low amperage 12V switched power to use through a relay? Bonus points are based on simplicity and effectiveness. Extra credit is awarded if a shunt in the ACC is

More likely a vacuum leak (every rubber junction is suspect), but the
shutoff valve is a less likely possibility. The valve is on top of the
injection pump with a single (usually) brown vacuum line going to it.
Old vacuum line rubber connections often leak more when cold.

The 0-60 mph time of the 124.128 and the 124.131 is almost the same 12.8
vs 12.6 sec. and the fuel consumption will be nearly identical (32-36

do much driving at altitudes above 3000' or at speeds much above 80 mph
were the turbo gives you an slight edge. Both have a top speed of about
122-123 mph at sea level.

The 0-60 time for a 124.133 ('87 300D) would be under 11 sec once the

Windows XP isn't $299 per copy. Office is that and more, though, and
I'd agree that Office pricing is thoroughly outrageous. Unfortunately,
there are no other products on the market that offer quite the same
level of functionality for business users, and Microsoft knows it.
(OpenOffice.org is a nice option for home users who don't need the more
sophisticated parts of Office, though.) It's a similar situation with
Adobe Photoshop, or with AutoCAD -- the price is extremely high because
there's no serious competition.

This topic is a slightly sensitive one for me. As an IT worker, I'm
constantly being asked by employers to break the law by installing
unlicensed copies of Microsoft software, just because they company
doesn't want to pony up the cash to pay for what they're using. The
whole thing puts me in a bind, because I have no doubts that if the BSA
did a license audit and found violations, they would throw my ass out
the door and I'd never work in this town again. As much as I hate the
idea of Microsoft software "phoning home" to check license status, it
does help me out. "I can't install another copy of that because it will
shut itself down after 30 days" sticks a lot better than "I can't
install another copy of that because it's a license violation."

way down and it gradually gains speed - while smoking - and then after the
100 yards it screams - running faster than at any other time.

The service technician asked about all the usual stuff that you guys
suggested I try - filters, leaks, etc - then he said he's seen a weak FI
leak fuel when sitting and leaving a pool of fuel in the cylinder. Then,
when the engine is started it is hard to burn before finally reaching a
temperature where it ignites and then it runs very fast. Sounds a lot like
mine.

So, I thought I'd get your collective opinion - if it sounds like a logical
possibility I'll have a diesel shop service the FI's in case that's the
problem.

I will do an oil analysis to see what the fuel content of the oil is - if an
injector is leaking there should be a high fuel content in the oil possibly
affecting the lubricating ability of the oil. Since I just changed the oil
I'll wait until I have 1000-1500 miles on the oil before I extract a sample.
The kit we sell has a bellows bottle and 4' of tubing to insert into the
dipstick - so the oil doesn;t have to be changed to get a sample.

What you describe could be the result of ONE glow plug failing. That's
not infrequent and the dash light diagnostic won't pick it up. The
scenario above is possible, but I've NEVER heard of it happening in any
car that I've serviced or have been consulted about (and that's a LOT of
diesels) so that's a LOT less likely.

It is _not_ normal for the fan to always run, nor is the fan
particularly rated for that kind of duty. Plan on replacing
it at some point, if so. More than once, likely.

Kaleb C. Striplin wrote:

NOT A FACT. The quality of the Wal-Mart product is reflected in the name
and specifications (speed/load/temperature/treadlife for tires). It
CAN'T be bought elsewhere using the same model name/number and
specifications if the products are NOT the same. Some products will have
a very different warranty as well. For the consumer to assume that ALL
Michelin or Snapper or Mobil products are identical in quality is naive,
but many manufacturers of commodities, can't economically make different
quality products. I feel sure that the content of the CocaCola container
that you buy at WalMart is identical to the content of the Coke
container you buy down the street at the gas station despite the
disparate price. Same is true of Mobil 1 oil, but Exxon/Mobil has every
right to make a different products that meets a different specification
- BUT it must be distinguishable or the threat of hundreds or thousands
of lawsuits is created.

To reduce the price that dealers must pay for the merchandise they sell,
they can often buy products WITHOUT any warranty. When YOU buy a product
from a merchant that has NOT purchased a warranty, you buy it devoid of
ANY manufacturer's warranty - only the warranty that the packager or
merchant chooses to supply. Many cameras and Japanese electronics were
sold that way back when I was buying such stuff. The DVD transport in a
Dell or HP computer has NO warranty from the maker, but only from HP or
Dell. The warranty for parts in a new car seldom come from the actual
manufacturer, but from the car maker. The original Bilsteins in a
Mercedes have ONLY Mercedes' warranty, but the identical shock, bought
later from an authorized dealer carries a warranty for the life of the car.

Re: [MBZ] Best Early 90's Choice

2006-05-22 Thread Kevin
For what it's worth, the recently resurrected 87 300D with ducttaped
and bandaided transmission turns in 29.5 on the daily commute, and on a
trip this weekend to san diego was pulling down tanks at 33 mpg. Acts like
it has a bit of a lazy turbo, so I'll be checking the usual suspects with
respect to boost in my copious free time. Right now, the 87 300TD will walk
this thing off the road. ALDA is shimmed, so it's likely that a line is
coked, sensor effed up, or perhaps it needs a new turbo - this engine had
a trap on it for about 260k... oil consumption is also a teense higher
than usual.

As an aside, for those of you who are avoiding the 95s because they don't
have a turbo, and instead buying 90-93s, look at the horsepower and torque
numbers before you make that decision. Granted, the 606 is more complicated
than the 602, but the 95 is a more powerful car. IIRC, they are within ten
horsepower of the 87 300D.

[MBZ] NON TURBO diesel shut off valve

2006-05-22 Thread Marshall Field

Car I am working on is a '77 300D, NON TURBO, NO ALDA. The diesel shut off
valve on the IP needs replacement as it will not hold a vacuum.

My concern is getting the...hook...on the end of the valve properly aligned
and engaged with the ...rack within the IP You are working inside a
hole, and I am fearful if not done properly, that the engine will go into
...overspeedand potential self-destruct on engine start up.

I am familiar with the trick on the Turbo, Alda equipped engines of pivoting
the Alda out of the way and visually ensuring that the hook is aligned with
the rack properly.

But on this model, this trick can not be used, for up-top on the IP is the
Aneroid altitude compensator, which, even if removed would not gain visual
access.

This is worrying me greatly, and any help and comment is most appreciated!!

Curt,

Yo surely have every reason to keep the woman and leave the house! She
sounds great!
Would you consider paying up for an Arizona rust free sun yellow 116 diesel
that looks great, runs great, and has had many, many things rebuilt or

additional work but who knows! I think it is worth $4500. The engine has
about
20,000 miles on a serious rebuild that should run for a long time. I have
receipts for new parts and machine work totaling over $2700, I did all the
labor. Same with the AC, the driveshaft, motor mounts, etc., etc, etc. The
palomino gold interior looks really good and the seats have been removed and
renovated, with new horsehair pads in back. Front and back bumper skins and
rubber replaced, new headlight surrounds (with spare Euro headlights. The 100
watt US headlights may be the best you will have ever seen and I can't justify
changing to the Euros).

No trailer hitch though! And it is not clear if you were thinking diesel

I am getting past the point where I can keep maintaining my fleet, and must
consider parting with my baby.

not worked since I got the car. After I plugged it in as soon as I started
the car it ran for about 15 seconds and then stopped. I noticed that it had
blown a fuse. Other point of interest is that on the repair information from
previous owner it says "conversion to r134a, wire aux fan to run
constantly". The car has always run under 100 degrees so it has not
overheated and does
not run hot. Is that normal for the fan to run as soon as you start the car
?

I know that I need to check the schematic to see that the wiring has not
been altered and I imagine I should check to see that the aux fan switch is
working.

Dan,

With any performance limited AC unit, some gain can be made by running the
aux fan as soon as the car is started. R134 would fit that category. Here,
in Phoenix, I run the aux fan continuously, whenever the key is on, to try
and get the most out of my 300SD's AC. You merely have to run a jumper from
the temp sensor wire to ground to do this. Or unplug the sensor wire and
ground it on a small stud or such. The temp sensor on mine is on top of the
thermostat housing and is connected by a single wire, brown, I think.

Why you blew a fuse is a different animal. It could be the fuse holder has
been overheated so many times that heat build up at that point is excessive.
Also, the aux fan is paired with another big load, either the AC clutch, or
the AC fan, and the combined load is too much for the factory fuse. There is
a service bulletin out for your car, and many others including my 98 ML, to
switch these loads to a separately added in line fuse with more ampacity.
Try a new fuse and run your aux fan with the AC for a few minutes, then put
your finger on each end of the fuse holder to see if it is getting really hot.

Wet your finger first! This will tell you that you should install the TSB or
fix the overload, whatever it is.

Keep us informed.

I've experienced the neck snapping acceleration of both. Dead bugs

[MBZ] Aux Cooling Fan - Short

2006-05-22 Thread dieselbenz24
Hello All,

I noticed that my auxillary cooling fan was not plugged in the other day and
wanted to get that fixed. The fan has never been plugged in and the AC has not
worked since I got the car. After I plugged it in as soon as I started the car
it ran for about 15 seconds and then stopped. I noticed that it had blown a
fuse. Other point of interest is that on the repair information from previous
owner it says "conversion to r134a, wire aux fan to run constantly". The car
has always run under 100 degrees so it has not overheated and does not run hot.
Is that normal for the fan to run as soon as you start the car ?

I know that I need to check the schematic to see that the wiring has not been
altered and I imagine I should check to see that the aux fan switch is working.

Any other insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan Elliott

Re: [MBZ] ACC Issues with 300SD

2006-05-22 Thread Jim Cathey

With the ignition switched on (Accessory setting) the
fan will work perfectly normal from highest to lowest
speed. With the car on the fan stops working.
Pushing the defrost button or any number of buttons
and changing fuses results makes no difference.

Disconnect (and plug) the vacuum hose to the IP shutoff
pod. Then turn off the car (which will stay running)
and turn it back on. Is the ACC fine then? That would
indicate that the ignition switch is going bad, if the
trip to the Start position is what makes the ACC crap
out. One can also try teasing the key to see if you
can make the ACC symptoms change, but I like the
vacuum hose trick, which gives you full mobility
to play with on the switch.

The alternative diagnosis is that the motion and
vibration of the moving vehicle is what's taking out
the ACC, which might point towards bad solder joints
inside the pushbutton array, of which I have had
plenty. That repair, at least, is cheap. If you
are handy and can solder.

after 25 years or so, the ACC units become rather temperamental (i'm talking
about the horizontal pushbutton units by VDO, not the vertical button

they usually work great. I've rebuilt 3 like this with great success.

[MBZ] car won't start - bushings/neutral safety switch - TIP!

2006-05-22 Thread Christopher McCann
On two separate occassions lately, the 300TD did not start. I jumped it both
times and voila, it starts. Well, last time, I let it sit for a week before
digging into it and started it before I got to work (just to see) and it
started just fine! Hmm...

Problem - shifter bushings are loose and the neutral safety switch was not
doing it's thing. So when it didn't start this morning, I moved the shifter
lever around and it started just fine. Soultion: new shifter bushings,
obviously (they are loose)

Anyway, useful hint in case your car doesn't start someday.

[MBZ] '92 300TE: Any concerns specific to the engine on these?

2006-05-22 Thread Zeitgeist

Hey Volks, after two recent run-ins with other motorists/bicyclists
which required timely application of my TD's ABS to save my bacon,
I've decided it's time my wife had the same access to bacon-saving
technology as me. So, I'm considering a '92 300TE w/125k as a
suitable, if somewhat temporary replacement until I locate a '90-'93
300D. I'm fairly familiar with the T-model chassis, but I don't know
too much about the gasser engines (yeeech!) in these things. I
believe they run KE-Jetronic injection and are prone to valve stem
issues. What else should I be aware of with these (yeeech!) gasser
engines? Ignition system issues? Fuel mileage?

Interesting, so a mount can actually produce a hum? Must be a
resonating

vibration

Even a good differential (for example) has some noise associated
with it, and if the rubber mount is collapsed so there is metal-on-metal
contact that small noise will be coupled into the car's body. The
collapsed diff mount on the 240D, when replaced, _reduced_ the noise
but did not eliminate it.

Re: [MBZ] Noisy Diff

2006-05-22 Thread Jim Cathey

And something that comes on
ONLY at a narrow speed range is not likely a diff, I don't think.

I don't either. Ours seemed loudest at low speeds, because the
ambient noise was lower. Reminded me of a straight-cut gearbox
from an old school bus. (Of which I had some experience as a
kid.)

It surely can be differential related and if it is, it's more likely
than not a bad pinion bearing, resulting in varying gear lash.

I'm semi-convinced that the pinion bearing preload, which was
definitely too loose, could have been tightened to restore my
particular differential to service. But we'll probably never
know for sure.

Re: [MBZ] Noisy Diff

2006-05-22 Thread Dan Weeks
In my 82 300SD, it's mainly at low speeds, and is loudest at around
45 mph under light throttle. Goes away when throttle lifted. Audible
at highway speeds, but less so than at 45. Also, there's evident gear
lash. Mine is a confirmed worn R&P. I would not think those come on
suddenly--mine's been making the noise ever since I bought it 25k
miles ago, tho it may be getting worse. And something that comes on
ONLY at a narrow speed range is not likely a diff, I don't think.
Sounds like a sympathetic vibration. Try running at 67 in 3rd, and at
the same rpm you get at 67 in 4th in other gears and see if the noise
is there. If it's rpm related, not road speed related, it's not a
diff.

Those of you who have had a differential hum: Does it occur mainly at a
certain speed? Probably not, I know, but just making sure that what I heard
this weekend on the highway isn't a differential in disrepair. I know that
often if it is the diff., it will occur upon letting off the throttle? Our
noise occurred most often as I hit about 67 mph.

The cabin temp sensor (that is activated by air drawn past it along the
hose to the cabin temp sensor in the dash by venturi effect from the
blower) must have cabin air drawn past it by the blower to operate the
temperature controller that turns the monovalve and compressor on and
off. If air isn't drawn past the sensor, it measures the temperature of
the stagnant air being warmed/cooled by the dashboard assembly as cabin
temp and acts accordingly. That results in erratic temperature control
Of course, that should not be of any concern if the temp controller is
set at MAX or MIN.

Not sure what the spectrum of symptoms are when the temp control module
(not the push button controller) fails.

Not carrying any such in trunk. Hmm. Thanks for tips. Actually I kinda like
the smell, but the wife was dismayed by it as we packed for camping this
weekend. I guess I really don't want the sleeping bag and clothes to smell
like diesel either.

The caps on those bottles sometimes leak a little bit even when new, and
the
smell takes forever to disperse once it's into the trunk padding.

The condition of this example aside, I must say that that is an awesome

this thing? Pretty cool. Looks like leather interior?

Re: [MBZ] The wave

2006-05-22 Thread ernest breakfield
what i paid for what i'm riding has *zero* bearing on what my skin is
worth to me; i'll bleed just as much falling off of a $600 motorcycle as
off of a $16K motorcycle.

when people ask me what it costs to get into motorcycling, i find that
most are surprised when my first response is directed towards what it
costs to get get properly dressed to ride the most safely... and i find
it odd that most seem to think they can somehow justify putting off that
cost until after they've been riding longer; as if riding less protected
with the least experience is somehow going to be OK...?!

as for helmets; i hate them, but i've buried too many friends that have
come off of non-motorized wheels to believe that they're not beneficial.
i've even seen studies that imply that the forces suffered by a head
falling to the ground from off of a bicycle at most any speed are equal
to those encountered by dropping the head from the height of the average
male (about 6').

on the topic of the subject line; i don't generally initiate a wave in
urban areas unless we're sharing something more than just being there at
the same time (like maybe severe weather); but i find the farther i get
from civilization, the more likely this changes.

cheers!

I will gladly buy the coupe off of you for the princely sum of $1000.

Give her your coupe, until such time as it can be chased down and fixed.

Once it's under your care, wire a test lamp to the monovalve to see
if it's properly being operated by the ACC system. Has the PB array
been resoldered lately? Is the _other_ end of the foam hose properly
connected so that there is actually airflow through the sensor?

do you find it necessary to bleed before you believe that you *will*
bleed?

personally, i ride ATGATT (All The Gear All The Time) because i grew up
riding dirt bikes that way and saw how much good it does when (not *if*)
you come off... (and i've seen firsthand that it doesn't always have to
involve much speed to incur an injury.)
having the gear on has helped make the difference between gaining scars
and gaining just experience.

My 300CD has a hum that become noticeable at about 45 MPH. I believe it's
due to a bad diff mount (thanks Jim Cathey for your explanation of your
diagnosis on your 240D). It doesn't change with acceleration/deceleration,
and turning one way or the other doesn't affect it either. It's down the
list of repairs, but it's definitely something that needs to be done

Re: [MBZ] Trunk stank

2006-05-22 Thread kevin kraly
Something's definitely up. The problem I've been having with all but one of
my previously owned MB's and my current one as well is that everything in
the trunk is wet or smells musty from said moisture. Have you checked
around the tank/lines for fuel? Is the overflow line routed in such a way
that it's squirting a mist of diesel on the contents of your trunk every
time you fill up? Check the filler tube and the filler neck seal because
it's probably dried out and bearly hanging in there and fuel is getting in
that way.

Good luck!

Re: [MBZ] Trunk stank

Is this because the fuel seeps down outside of the filler tube or something?
For that matter, where does that little drain hole in the fuel filler area
lead? (besides to the ground)
