Today the hatch dropped like a rock! Usually, they first show weakness when the cold weather hits, when the gas contracts a little. Just depends on how many miles are on it, what kind of shape its in etc. You will have some expensive computer boxes on that car for the engine that can fail. Its also only going to get 20 tops highway miles if you keep your foot out of it. Oh, and you have to burn premium in it. Otherwise, they are nice cars but have the typical 124 stuff like evaporator leaks, and the degrading wiring harness, which with the v8 will be EXPENSIVE to replace. Re: [MBZ] Okie 450SLC Frankenbenz
The battery was moved to the trunk to make room for the ACC servo (that we all love). I disagree. Our '76 SL, for example has the rear battery and no ACC at all. I maintain that the battery was driven to the rear by the underhood heat issues of the early underhood catalytic converters (in 75 and 76). Early SL's have the battery under the hood in that spot. I don't know that much about SLC's except that they are fat SL's. (Well, long and tall anyhow.) I would think that underhood they would be identical to the same-year SL's. -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] Okie 450SLC Frankenbenz
Could be. However, the changes introduced in '77 are listed as - * Catalytic converters moved downstream. Catalytic converters moved back beneath the floor * Climate-control system introduced (Type 1) * Battery moved to trunk I would think that if ACC was offered as an option, and required moving the battery to the trunk, that they'd install the battery in the trunk for all the 107s regardless whether ACC was ordered/installed or not. Probably an combination of both. Moving the battery to get away from the heat doesn't make sense at the same time that the cat was moved to reduce the heat. We all know that MB does not make changes only at the beginning of a new model year, so it's likely that the changes listed as occurring in '77 didn't happen all at once. Does your '76 still have the CATs under the exhaust manifolds? Yes - under the hood the SL and SLC are the same - I did not find a single instance of documentation that discriminated between the two while rebuilding and replacing the engine in my SLC. FYI - I now have a '76 block and heads, with most everything else being '78 in a '78 chassis. I never owned a new car- but I've had 16 used ones. If I had a new one I wouldn't be rigging a piece of string to my shutoff valve and feeding it through the radiator grill so that I can shut the car off without opening the hood (my shutoff valve is spoiled.) But new cars are no fun, they just smell nice for a year or so. I had the satisfaction of changing my idler pulley and shock yesterday. Now I wouldn't be doing that on a new one! Re: [MBZ] Porsche in PnP
The interesting thing to note is that the Fiero was a quick engineer vehicle. Lots of parts bin engineering in that one. Pontiac wanted a plastic 2-seat sports car to compete with the Corvette, but could never gain approval from GM for that. So they came up with a sporty commuter car, with Chevette front suspension and X-body front end moved to the rear. The way I remember it, they still had tie rods on the steering knuckles for toe adjustment, but I'm not certain. Mitch

Re: [MBZ] '88 126 Hesitation Problems and Intermittent Hard Start
Sounds like the throttle position sensor to me on the hesitation. As for the idle deal, sounds like you are talking about the idle air valve that you had replaced. Mark E. Peneguy wrote: Friends: Recently, I started having a problem with hesitation when I accelerate from a dead stop. Once the car is in motion, everything is smooth, as it should be. I don't have a clue as to what may be causing the problem. I have had a few things worked on lately, including a tune-up, with new spark plug wires and distributor, cap and rotor, etc., which seems to rule out those things as the issues. The only thing that I know made a difference in the idle, and I assumed might be part of the hesitation problem, as the hesitation showed up not too long afterwards, was a part (wish I could identify it for you) that reduced the idle from 1,000 to 1,100 rpm at idle in park, to 550-600 rpm at idle in park. This part plugs in just under the air cleaner housing in the front, top part of the engine, if that helps identify what it might be. The engine idles smoothly when in park, neutral or in gear (runs about 450 rpm in gear at a stop and there is no tremble). My second problem is an intermittent hard starting problem (the starter was replaced not too long ago and the problem just manifested itself). Sometimes, I turn the key and it starts right up, like it always used to. Now, though, if it doesn't start immediately, I turn the key and it cranks for a few seconds before it finally starts. The last time that happened, I saw smoke come out from the rear of the car (couldn't tell what color, due to the ambient light). That was the first time I've ever noticed smoke come from the tailpipe in the 13 years I've owned the car. My trusted mechanic closed shop and is leaving the N.O. area since Katrina. So, I will be trying out a new mechanic to have this resolved (wish I was mechanically inclined!). I would like to have an idea of what I may be looking at before I go to a new guy.
