Hey, if any of you up here in the NW are interested in a cheap W201, I've
taken a quick look at this one. It's beat, but can probably be had for way
less than the asking price. I have pics of the (trashed) grey tex interior,
if anyone cares to see them. It doesn't currently run, but I think it just
needs the battery charged. Trans apparently slips and it probably needs a
headgasket. It's owned by a very nice young single mother, and I promised
her I'd post here to help advertise on her behalf (no affiliation).

Bob, and all
Yea, I was parked with my ML's rear hatch facing the sun and I think the
heat blew the gas out of the struts that keep the hatch open, Two days ago
they
worked fine. Today the hatch dropped like a rock! Usually, they first show
weakness when the cold weather hits, when the gas contracts a little.

My daughter's college commencement was held mid afternoon at the new Marriot
in Scottsdale. It was 113 degrees when we left! About 3000 people (500
graduates) in one room! The air conditioning was perfect! No drafts, no
overheating. Amazing! The PA system was pretty good too, and the traffic
control
couldn't have been better.

The main ballroom subdivides into 3 quite large rooms in the middle, and
rolling walls create 4 more nice meeting rooms on each end of the main room.
So
if you have need of convention space that is well sorted out, put them on
your short list of places to consider.

We came out the wrong door and didn't get any cake though, bummer!

Don,

The price is right, barring any surprises--see below. I would say you have

That would be the era of the rotting underhood wiring harness, probably
medium expensive on that model. Maybe 2K with labor. Also, make sure the AC

After the Fiero came out, I figured that just about any FWD angine/trans/

a Ford GT40 or Lambo Miura replicar with a hopped up VW TDI in it?
The most interesting conversion I ever saw on the market was called

I drove a semi for years and in most of the country, so long as you paid
the ticket , it didn';t go on your record, but if you fought it, win or
loose, it would show up. That little system kept the kangaroo courts of
the country in fat buisness for years, usually the town got a small bit
and the cop and the JP split the rest. I know at one point i think I
bought a steak dinner for every cop in east texas ( never once was I

accepted it as a cost of doing buisness , it's pretty funny, the cops
carry a glove box full of blank Comchecks and other money transfer
checks so you can pay them right in the car. Had one in Arkansas even
had the nerve to show me how he rigged the rader to read whatever he
wanted..while I was filling out the check)
But now days with the computers everything shows up on a record and can
effect not only insurance rates but things as crazy as employability.
You might want to consider a trip to Jeff city , not to fight it ( that
just get's them mad when you try to mess with their money ) but in many
areas if you do go to court and beg , they won't put it on your record
if you pay on the spot. ( that's funny, if they get their money right
away, you are a good driver, but it they have to wait for their money,
you are a bad driver and a public safety hazard and should be penilized
by your insurance co with years of increased rates, and your driving
record should have a mark on it putting you that much closer to having
your license taken away, because people who don't pay right away should
not be allowed on the road )

I think that's the problem - and the starter for the OM61xs are on the

The shift linkage cable for the OM60x transmission is in the passenger's

Just depends on how many miles are on it, what kind of shape its in etc.
You will have some expensive computer boxes on that car for the engine
that can fail. Its also only going to get 20 tops highway miles if you
keep your foot out of it. Oh, and you have to burn premium in it.
Otherwise, they are nice cars but have the typical 124 stuff like
evaporator leaks, and the degrading wiring harness, which with the v8

The interesting thing to note is that the Fiero was a quick engineer
vehicle. It was literally a Front wheel drive car, turned completely
around before the body panels were placed. I'm not sure about after
they became popular and stuck around for a few years, but I know the
early models even have *steering knuckles* that are welded (I think to
the sub frame, it's been many many years) so the rear wheels don't

effect not only insurance rates but things as crazy as employability.

The battery was moved to the trunk to make room for the ACC servo
(that we all love).

I disagree. Our '76 SL, for example has the rear battery and
no ACC at all. I maintain that the battery was driven to the
rear by the underhood heat issues of the early underhood
catalytic converters (in 75 and 76). Early SL's have the
battery under the hood in that spot. I don't know that much
about SLC's except that they are fat SL's. (Well, long and
tall anyhow.) I would think that underhood they would be
identical to the same-year SL's.

Re: [MBZ] Okie 450SLC Frankenbenz

2006-06-04 Thread OK Don

Could be. However, the changes introduced in '77 are listed as -
 * Catalytic converters moved downstream. Catalytic converters
moved back beneath the floor
   * Climate-control system introduced (Type 1)
   * Battery moved to trunk

I would think that if ACC was offered as an option, and required
moving the battery to the trunk, that they'd install the battery in
the trunk for all the 107s regardless whether ACC was
ordered/installed or not.

Probably an combination of both. Moving the battery to get away from
the heat doesn't make sense at the same time that the cat was moved to
reduce the heat.

We all know that MB does not make changes only at the beginning of a
new model year, so it's likely that the changes listed as occurring in
'77 didn't happen all at once.

Does your '76 still have the CATs under the exhaust manifolds?

Yes - under the hood the SL and SLC are the same - I did not find a
single instance of documentation that discriminated between the two
while rebuilding and replacing the engine in my SLC.

FYI - I now have a '76 block and heads, with most everything else
being '78 in a '78 chassis.

I never owned a new car- but I've had 16 used ones. If I had a new one
I wouldn't be rigging a piece of string to my shutoff valve and feeding
it through the radiator grill so that I can shut the car off without
opening the hood (my shutoff valve is spoiled.)

But new cars are no fun, they just smell nice for a year or so. I had
the satisfaction of changing my idler pulley and shock yesterday. Now I
wouldn't be doing that on a new one!

Also, buying used ones has been much cheaper for me over the years- and
has allowed this poor man to drive some very nice cars, albeit broken in.

Several people on another list have complained to Mercedes about the
skinnerbox.steaky.org and mb.braingears sites and after several
reminders from the whistle blowers, Mercedes has threatened legal
action. This has resulted in the steaky site being closed. I expect
that braingears will give up as well.

Terrible shame. All manufacturer's service information SHOULD be freely
accessible over the internet to owners AND mechanics.

Re: [MBZ] Porsche in PnP

2006-06-04 Thread Mitch Haley

The interesting thing to note is that the Fiero was a quick
 engineer vehicle.

Lots of parts bin engineering in that one. Pontiac wanted
a plastic 2-seat sports car to compete with the Corvette,
but could never gain approval from GM for that. So they
came up with a sporty commuter car, with Chevette front
suspension and X-body front end moved to the rear. The way
I remember it, they still had tie rods on the steering
knuckles for toe adjustment, but I'm not certain.

 What is reasonable anymore?

A local dealer advertised a Hyundai Accent for $6500
after a $5000 rebate last week, that seemed reasonable to
me. (the last new car I bought was about $4800 before taxes)

Re: [MBZ] '88 126 Hesitation Problems and Intermittent Hard Start

2006-06-04 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Sounds like the throttle position sensor to me on the hesitation. As
for the idle deal, sounds like you are talking about the idle air valve
that you had replaced.

Mark E. Peneguy wrote:

Friends:

Recently, I started having a problem with hesitation when I accelerate
from a dead stop. Once the car is in motion, everything is smooth, as
it should be.

I don't have a clue as to what may be causing the problem. I have had a
few things worked on lately, including a tune-up, with new spark plug
wires and distributor, cap and rotor, etc., which seems to rule out
those things as the issues.

The only thing that I know made a difference in the idle, and I assumed
might be part of the hesitation problem, as the hesitation showed up not
too long afterwards, was a part (wish I could identify it for you) that
reduced the idle from 1,000 to 1,100 rpm at idle in park, to 550-600 rpm
at idle in park. This part plugs in just under the air cleaner housing
in the front, top part of the engine, if that helps identify what it
might be. The engine idles smoothly when in park, neutral or in gear
(runs about 450 rpm in gear at a stop and there is no tremble).

My second problem is an intermittent hard starting problem (the starter
was replaced not too long ago and the problem just manifested itself).
Sometimes, I turn the key and it starts right up, like it always used
to. Now, though, if it doesn't start immediately, I turn the key and it
cranks for a few seconds before it finally starts. The last time that
happened, I saw smoke come out from the rear of the car (couldn't tell
what color, due to the ambient light). That was the first time I've
ever noticed smoke come from the tailpipe in the 13 years I've owned the
car.

My trusted mechanic closed shop and is leaving the N.O. area since
Katrina. So, I will be trying out a new mechanic to have this resolved
(wish I was mechanically inclined!). I would like to have an idea of
what I may be looking at before I go to a new guy.

Any thoughts any of you may have shall be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Mark
