Re: [MBZ] 240D or 300D available?

2007-11-14 Thread Timothy Robinson
I've got four 300D W123s. My intention this summer was to buy one and use it
to commute to the summer contract. Working seven days per, every time I
found a vehicle it got away from me. I wound up getting more aggressive and
(long story) wound up with four I bought on "good faith" (gentleman's
agreement, word as bond... yada yada)

Original intention was to convert one vehicle to a two tank system and burn
WVO that I have a sweet deal on.

The plan changed and I decided to put the mileage on a Camry which will be
out of lease in about a year. It's my mom's car and as she only logs a
couple of thousand miles per year, it just made sense to get the mileage out
of the lease (32 mpg).

As season is over I've just managed to collect the vehicles I bought and
start going through each. Ironic, the roughest one with the highest mileage
is the one I'm partial to. (1985 300D 322K navy/palamino)

My "criteria" on all of the cars was "if the interior looks like you let the
dogs chew on it don't tell me how the car is in great shape mechanically!"
Chances are if it looks abused it was.

Anyway, I listed one of the cars locally only after I asked the indy to go
over it thoroughly, new motor mounts, new exhaust, new fuel lines, a/c
service, new boots on the rear axle; If I were a car dealer I'd go broke!

I got responses from "kids" who had heard one can just pour some old fryer
oil in a Benz and never have another care. I refused to sell.

I'll probably have to make myself sell a few of the cars to afford a little
cosmetic work on the others.

If anyone's close to Asheville, NC and APPRECIATES (respects) the W123,
you're welcome to look or make an offer.

Re: [MBZ] Just another struggling little German company...

2007-11-14 Thread E M
It may very well happen Larry. :-) Another SC. One owner car, Targe, all
original with 58,000 miles. Being all original, may be picking your brain on
a few updates. Want to use it for daily transport, so looking at a few
things, like SSI heat exchangers. Just had a full service and the top
rebuilt. I do know the car and drive it from time to time. Goes like the
hammers!! More stable on the road at 100 with the top off than a Boxster
with the top down. :-)

My thinking is, to enjoy dedicated cars, like a 911 sports car, and a benz
for real comfort for another 10 years or so. Then, I plan to down size and
move more towards a all in one car, like a M5. Four sets, good trunk and an
engine to to go out and tickle Ferraris with. ;-)

I'll keep you updated Larry.

Re: [MBZ] 240D or 300D available?

2007-11-14 Thread Scott Ritchey
David,

Pretty much everything works except the cruise is very jerky (not sure why).
Electric antenna inop. AC is still R12 and hasn't been charged in 3 years
but still blows cold. ACC functions. Pale blue outside, dark blue inside.
Tires are good. Inside doesn't look bad when it's swept out. Outside is not
pretty, cosmetic rust and it really needs repaint. But a good pro paint job
would cost a lot more than the car.

This is a car for a DYI person. It was my daily driver until I retired in
2005. Sluggish (only 75 HP) in town but loves to cruise on the freeway.

Car was bought and driven in Alabama and Northwest FL until I moved to NC in
2005.

I agreed previously to sell back to PO for $1500 (then he died suddenly of a
heart attack at age 52) so that price is OK with me.

You can see that several things underneath have been painted black,
including the muffler and tailpipe, and parts of the floorboard.
Strange that they would bill it as so pristine if someone felt the
need to spray paint the underpinnings.

Re: [MBZ] 107 fuel system

2007-11-14 Thread Peter Frederick
One or two electric fuel pumps under the car at the rear. Fuel filter
is adjacent, as is the pressure accumulator. Fuel pump relay is in the
kick panel on the passenger side, I believe, but I don't know which one
it is. May be behind the battery in that car like the W126. there is
a tank screen as well, but they very rarely plug up on a gasser unless
it's been sitting a long time -- stuff doesn't grow in gasoline like it
does in diesel fuel.

You should find the relay and jumper it to run the pump and see if that
cures the problem for a short while. If it does, replace the relay.
You should also check the current draw -- a bad pump will roast a
relay, and a new one won't last long, either.

I would also replace the check valve in the pump, although that usually
only ibad when you have a hard start problem.

[MBZ] 107 fuel system

2007-11-14 Thread Loren Faeth

>Subject car is 85 380SL

Has symptoms of fuel starvation. My thoughts are fuel filter or fuel
pump in the process of dying.

AFIK, this car has an electric fuel pump in the rear. I assume there
is a fuel filter somewhere around the engine. DO these have a tank
strainer as in Diesels?

Any other ideas or suggestions. Winter cold is blowing in here, so I
want to limit my time outside int he weather as much as possible byt
figuring out what and where to check before I go out.

Thanks, And forgive me as I am an old Dieselhead. These gasser

Re: [MBZ] Porsche scraping along

2007-11-14 Thread E M
Na, I read other posts besides my own, I just try to avoid reading yours
whenever possible.

Defects are largely based on what people bring back and complain about.
It's as much to do with owner expectations, as it is about a quality
product. Most guys how guy a new S Class are probably going to be a little
pickier than a guy who buys a Camry.

As for the 993 being a zero defects car, it was far from that. If you think
it is, go and buy the best one you can find and live with it for awhile.
Blow an engine up a newer porsche, under warranty, and they won't even try
to rebuild it, they'll just plug a new one in.. Nothing wrong with a
Boxster, I've spend lots of time in them, but many of the parts look like
they were supplied by IKEA, and some of the engineering, is just, well,
crap!

Porsche is making lots of money and stying healthy. Good for them, just
means I'll be more likely to be able to get factory parts of my old beaters
in the years to come.

As for Mercedes, the new S550 also came out with near zero defects. Having
said that, most are probably leased for 3-4 years, so if dumping the car in
a few years, maybe the driver doesn't look as close as the guy 20 years ago
who wrote out the big cheque, and planned to live with the car for 15 years
or 400,000 kms does. Lets see what the near zero defect S looks like in 10
years.

Re: [MBZ] OT Welding Bicycle CroMoly Frames

2007-11-14 Thread Zoltan Finks
Yeah, I drilled through the frame and installed the two stainless
plates with fasteners running all the way through. The metal was
pretty thin, but I assumed it was the normal thickness.

No epoxy involved - didn't think of it.

Just hacksawed the plates to size and shape and made the appropriate
holes and figured out how to fit the fasteners in there. A couple of
them have almost zero clearance. Have to admit that I used some
washers as spacers as well.

Used a dremel tool to remove sharp edges from the plates.

Great to have the bike back in service and for almost no money.

THey probably came from Houston or from northerners who moved
there. Both of my Dallas cars, 81 240D and 87 300D were sold new at
Autohaus, Dallas and have carfax records showing they lived in
Dallas. No rust, at least when they came north.

There are rusty cars here - we're half way to Wichita, KS. When I was

Yeah, but a buzzer would be a nice backup. Do you keep an eye glued
to the oil pressure every second?

My '91 VW did not have a pressure gauge, but it had an idiot light

was running. I activated it once or twice banking hard on highway
exit ramps, and it was impossible to miss.

Re: [MBZ] OT - 6.2 diesel suburban gotchas

2007-11-14 Thread Loren Faeth
Put a real fuel filter/water separator on it. You can buy the Roosa
Master filter pair from a tractor salvage yard. Most John Deere
Diesels from 4020 on have them. Most of the problems of the GM
diesel stem from water in the fuel/plugged filter. The factory put
on an itty bitty filter, not much more than the MB see-thru
prefilter, that passes ALL water through to the nozzles, where it ruins them.

Side benefits of the Master filters: They are see thru; you can buy
replacements lotsa places, including every JD dealer in the
country. If you are stranded, you have about a 50/50 chance of the
nearest farm having spares; they filter out finer particles than the
MB OEM filters.

Yes, this is apparently why the kids' idea of a classic muscle car in
Minnesota is a mid-80's Cutlass or Monte Carlo. Had to laugh when I
moved into the neighborhood with my '68 Coronet.

Not sure of the boundaries, though, Rick.

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 24, Issue 74

2007-11-14 Thread Bill Ringgold
I do wish my air direction problems had cleared up, but they got worse. Mine
went from me being able to trick it part of the time so it would blow into the
cabin to full-time windscreen. Seems an expensive repair, also. I suspect
much of that is labor, but I can't work with my head lower than my heart
[life-long condition] so I don't think I can try that repair. I thought you
could get to it by taking out the glove box, but Rusty said no to that one.
I've got to replace the AC compressor once more so will wait until Spring when
the temperatures make it a necessity. I can survive the Winter with a noisy AC
and a cold windshield.
The transmission shift problems are related to the vacuum, but it was not
right before the vac pump was replaced, so it getting worse after was not a
surprise. It is too slow to change gears, and occasionally makes the 2-3 & 3-4
shifts on top of each other. Might need to take that to a Mb transmission
place rather than my usual Indy. I trust him completely, but he told me up
front he was no expert on MB transmissions. He had cleared up the problems
when another shop [out of town engine failure] messed it up, but might not have
the experience to do this.

Bill:

Interesting your vac pump and mine failed at exactly the same milage.
Sorry to hear your heater stuff ain't working better--mine cleared
right up.

My trans shifts exactly the same now as it did before the pump
replacement, incidently. Not sure whether the shop recalibrated it or
not--they didn't mention doing so.

I have had the trans shift hard after a trans service, but that time
the shop inadvertantly disconnected a vacuum line entirely. Perhaps
the same thing happened to yours.

Good luck!

I feel for you - I'm from just South of Buffalo NY, where "on quite nights,

There is a strip that runs across the US. The northern boundary is somewhere
around the center of Tennessee & extends due East & West and the southern
boundary is South, probably 100 miles from the coast.

Re: [MBZ] Repair of leaking door actuator

On my '81 SD I replaced the door lock actuators a few months ago. The German

release the rod.

I have also noticed that the oblong ones, as used in
single-line systems, often fail at that exposed boot
and not inside. But the older round ones are prone
to the internal diaphragms failing.

Cool. I was wondering about that. I've been wanting to meet this
German Shepherd I see in this yard that barks a lot but looks so
lonely. I think I'll just go ahead and pet him like I've been wanting
to. Thanks Gary.

Re: [MBZ] 126 Gasser

2007-11-14 Thread LarryT
Hi Kaleb,
that does sound impressive - what kind of mgp's does it get?

You know? there's so many people who have no knowledge of what a MB costs of
how much more life is left in them when they hit the used car market.
Someone who buys a newish Accord for $12k could have that SEL for $2500 and
put $5K aside in a savings account in case it needs something in the future.
Then they'd have a REAL car.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel in the sky

2007-11-14 Thread LarryT
Howdy -
When was the old line of Skyhawks discontinued? Whe I was in flight
school we had a BBQ on the beach for the school - several people had their
own planes (not students) and flew the rest to the beach - my wife & I got
into a Cessna210 for a total of 4 people - I was skinny back then but we
were still regular sized people - I think the 210 might have been called a
Skylane (?) and the way that thing took off almost fully loaded really
impressed me - rolled down the r'way and pilot pulled back on the wheel and
we went UP. Very impressive to see and feel how much power that plane had.

Climbed like a "homesick angel" as they say. It moved to the top of my
list of planes I wanted. Along with a 172RG and a 310 twin (getting
unrealistic I admit) -

Anyway - I haven't looked at Cessna website in a long time - will check
out the new Skyhawks - they sound pretty impressive.

Re: [MBZ] OT - 6.2 diesel suburban gotchas

2007-11-14 Thread Curt Raymond

And drank more fuel in accordance.
The 6.2 made just shy of 150hp IIRC which as far as I'm concerned is plenty
unless I'm working with really heavy loads, I'm not in a hurry.

I'd like to transplant one into an S-truck. My '88 S15 had the little 2.8l v6
which made IIRC around 100hp and drove somewhat like a 240D (although it'd
chirp the tires in 1st).
A bit more power would be nice and I imagine the fuel economy would be good in
a light chassis like that.

The 6.5 engine in the later models (starting in 1992 IIRC) was a better
engine, produced more power and a turbocharged version was available.

Cheaper and more efficient, but less reliable and probably heavier than a
turboprop engine. IIRC from reading about the engines last year, they will
also burn regular diesel which is cheaper than Jet-A. I'm curious about the
origin of the engine. Is it a modified Mercedes auto engine I wonder?

It appears you are trying to do something with Gmail on-line, and there
is a lot of crap that is trying to load on your slow cnxn. Load
Thunderbird as an email client and do your mail off-line, or with the
sending/getting working in the background. Just leave Tbird running,
set to get mail when you start it and send it when you send it. Just
get your mail off the Gmail server, and send to it, do your
reading/replying/creating in Tbird.

Re: [MBZ] Porsche scraping along

Ed, this is what happens when all you read are your own posts.

As I posted some time back, more than twelve years ago Porsche openly hired a
Japanese consulting company to come in and redesign the factory (from the
"German" way of doing things) to lower costs and raise efficiency.

As a result, production cost of the 993 was cut by a third and soon after,
the first zero defects car was built in the company's history. And today,
Porsche's profit per unit is the highest in the industry, worldwide.

Which is also why I bought a new Mercedes instead of a Boxster or Cayman.

Actually I'm pretty sure that was replaced a year or so ago when I got

diesels are not as bad as their reputation especially the newer ones.
The GM engine will be very durable if you do things a Mercedes diesel
owner does, i.e. be diligent about fuel quality, fuel filter
replacement, FREQUENT coolant flushes, and oil change intervals
appropriate for the type of oil you are using.

I also remember the glow plug relay failing a lot.

I think Kaleb has (or had) one of these, so he can probably offer better
advice.

The 6.5 engine in the later models (starting in 1992 IIRC) was a better
engine, produced more power and a turbocharged version was available.

Domino's used to be not half bad, until they replaced their deck
 ovens
with automatic conveyorized ones. Easier (and safer) for the
 staff,
but makes a totally generic pizza.

Going to order from Rusty any time soon?
I got the 12,14,17mm hex bit socket set at Autozone for $10, made a note
of how far the 14mm went into a diff plug, and cut the shaft down to slightly
longer than the depth of the hole in the plug. Then I put the leftover
piece in a box end wrench to turn the tranny fill plug on my W201, which
I could not use any square drive tool/handle combo on.
Not familiar with your 124 diff clearance, but it can't be any worse than
the manny tranny on a 16v.

They're for it's training school. I wonder if these engines use the same
block/head as those in some Mercedes?:

"The engine is a two-liter adaptation of a Daimler automotive diesel that's
been re-engineered for aviation use. It's a dual overhead cam, in-line
four-cylinder engine that puts out 155 hp. It comes with full authority
digital engine control and is turbocharged. The liquid-cooled engine drives
a three-bladed, composite constant speed prop.snip"

soon, too. Who's interested? It has 282 k miles and some rust, but
drives great and the AC blows ICE COLD. (I just had to write that)

Could it be??? Is it True?? Are congratulation in order? Do you know who

Actually you're pretty lucky - most people are forced to spend big bucks for
a new Porsche -

Have you lined up a midwife? Natural birth or medicated?

Hmmm,... dare I ask? Boy or girl? I guess sometimes wearing protection is
not the preferred method.

2007-11-14 Thread Rich Thomas
I asked about this a couple weeks ago regarding snow tires, some said
the flat 15" rims off the SEL might conflict on the SD. I measured the
flat ones the other day, they had 4 3/4" offset from the inside face of
the center to the outer edge of the inner side (what is that, like
120mm?). Where do you measure to get the actual diameter? The largest
edge-edge dimension was about 16", the inside-inside dimension was about
15" which I guess is what they are.

If you get a lower profile tire you can get within 1-2% of the original
tire diameter with 15" wheels.

I have 15" wheels instead of bundts on my '79 300SD... looks much better
and no change in the speedometer.
