Make sure the belt rollers, guides , tensioners are working properly. Make
sure the roller is perpendicular to the engine and not canted - if it's
cocked it is on the way out - quickly . The parts are cheap though and easy
to fix.
The elctrical problem is probably due to the battery being low - the belt is
probaboy ot driving the PS or alt.
It should be obvious in the light -

 HI Folks,

 Needing some guidance.

A 1987 MB 300SDL I sold about two months ago pulled into my driveway this
evening. It was experiencing a major challenge. NO dash lights were
working, every idiot light was on, no courtesy lights would operate, head
and tail lights were Ok but dim. It also was extremely difficult to steer
 as if no power steering???

These are friends of mine and this is his wife's car, of course she was
freaking out. I loaned her my Coupe to get home in and told her I would
look at her SDL in the light of tomorrow.

I was thinking/wondering, with the power steering so bad is the belt that
feeds the power steering pump also connected with/to the alternator?

I am searching for a common denominator as the wife says that everything
 was
fine until about three/five miles ago.

Re: [MBZ] how the world has changed

2007-12-28 Thread LarryT
It was a different time place. I spent my young years 5-12 in a small
town in SC - Would ride a bus to school (driven by high school students!!! -
some only 16 yrs old) with the high school kids - would walk to my
elementary school next to the HS.

After school I took my BB gun, met my best friend and spent as much time as
possible in the woods around our houses - the small town was firmly in the
country. Now, my daughter won't let our G'Son shoot my old BB gun in the
backyard - but I'm working on her ;-) On Saturday's my Mom or my friends
mom would drop us at the theater (there was only 1)to see the movies -
usually a Western double feature. This was by ourselves at ages 8-12 IIRC.

When I was 13 we moved to Hampton Va - a pretty large city com[pared to our
previous location but not really a *big* city like NY or Phil. The downtown
part was mostly old and run down with no reason to go there as the malls had
all we needed - and we shopped at the air force base mostly anyway. I
stayed there until after HS - hitchhiking when I needed to get somewhere and
the bus wasn;t handy or I didn;t have the money.

After being married at 18 (wife 17) we moved to La then Tx in 1973 or 74.
WHile I worked (at a oil refinery - back when we used to build them) my
wife would take the 3 kids to the beach (near Sabine Pass in east Tx) on the
Gulf of Mex - she;'d be completely by herself with not another soul on the
beach for miles. Often she wouldn;t see another person during the 2-3 hours
she stayed.

That scares the hell out of me now! No way would she or I see her take 3
kids aged 2-5 to a deserted beach!! She was 22 by then and while she may
have been in danger we didn;t think so. AS someone said, things were
different then - or maybe we didn;t hear about crime like we do now.?

Also, I wouldn;t have wanted my kids to hitchhike anywhere --

So I think we did a lot of things in the 60s and 70s we wouldn;t dream of
doing in the 80s, 90s or 00s. Can it really be that people are worse now?
Seems like there must have always been Bad people. I know the education
system is worse and could explain why but I can't think of what would turn
part of the populaton into homicidal maniacs where they were not before.

Maybe I'm just not thinking hard enough.

I taught in a local (rural/suburban) high school last
semester, and to say that things are adversarial when
it comes to students and parents is putting it mildly.

I had a kid who was from a very well known and
prominent cattle ranching family. It's clear that the
student in question was not going to college and most
likely would live out their life on the ranch, taken
care of by mom and dad until they cacked and left he
 and his siblings the ranch.

They would come in to class on a daily basis and
either be disruptive or just put their head on his
desk (I'm not going to work today.) While that was
probably the best thing, since having them sleep kept
them from being disruptive, it set a precedent that
would cause me problems with other students.

I would take them out of class, call mom, and explain
the situation. Mom would talk to them, they would be
compliant, and the next day the cycle would repeat
 itself.

Back in the day, if our teacher called home like this
we would probably expect a major @ss-kicking. In this
day in age it's clear that for most kids there are no
expectations of civility or respect, nor are there
consequences for such behaviors. I think that's the
one thing that p#sses me off the most as a teacher.
If I expect my students to comply with the rules and
they don't, there is little or nothing I can do about
it, and if I do, I risk getting a nasty phone call
from home. So I tolerate it, unless I get an
administrator that I know will back me up.

Jeez Dave - Maybe you have a car *I* can buy from you? Maybe you can
finance it and make the payments for me, too?
;-)

The sad part about your friends is their willingness to take advantage of
you. I bet the woman heard the noise but had no incentive to get it checked
as long as she could get where she wanted to go. Only then did she think
something might be wrong - that needs *you* to fix.

It sounds like these people are financially challenged - else you wouldn't
have given them such a great deal (I would have loved that 300SDL on those
terms!!) ;-) but I can work on it myself -

Anyway - glad the fix will be straightforward - even a generic shop should
be able to handle it -

Not in Florida. As an administrator (principal) the
best you could possibly do is in the high 70's, and
that's if you started out really early in your career.
North of the Mason-Dixon Line you can make in the low
100's, but those jobs are hard to come by.

Also, what's your opinion of school uniforms -
 doesn;t it level the playing
field and remove some of the competition about who
 has the best shoes or
 newest clothes?

I have mixed emotions about the uniform thing. The
school I work at has a uniform policy, but it's fairly
easy to get around, mainly because it's a Title 1
school and one of the workarounds is not having the
ability to buy uniforms. Ironically, I have seen kids
come in with NBA jerseys that cost more than what I
make in a day, yet they can't buy uniforms? In theory
it's a good idea, in practice it's really up to how
strictly the rules are enforced.

re the kids from the cattle family - I knew a family

 expectations.

These people are not highly educated but they are very
successful and recognize the value of an education.
Interestingly, their other kids are/were good students
and are or will attend college. This one is the
problem child of the family, hence the lowered
expectations, I believe.

There's some strange people out there -

Definitely. The demographics for this school are
really bizarre. I had classes with poor (white) kids,
hispanic gang-bangers, upscale party girls with boob
jobs (at 17!) and middle eastern immigrant kids who
kicked ass academically. That's all in one class. Go
figure.

Hell I would have made a deal like that with you :) It had to have been
very loud but you know how some women are, they dont pay attention. I cant
believe the compressor pulley locked up. If the compressor itself locked up
the klima relay would have kicked it out, unless somebody had it wired up to
run all the time because something in the system was bad, then the clutch
would have stayed kicked in and melted the belt. Otherwise the pulley
itself would have locked up but I dont think I have ever seen that happen.

them worthy of owning a Mercedes? I am beginning to wonder if perhaps they
would not have been happier with a dependable/beat up looking pick up?

So far this year I have lost my shirt selling Mercedes vehicles. Mostly to
people I knew some on EBay and no one ever seems happy with their purchases.
It seems the harder I work to help someone else the more it comes back to
bite me in the A! I have a 300D manual right now a beautiful Dark Brick
Red color it has some challenges all minor. I sold that one on EBay for a
$2,000.00 loss, allowed the guy to store it here and agreed to just take
interest free payments until it was all paid for. Six months later the guy
is behind - tells me he never wanted the vehicle and know wants all his
money back

Can't wait to get rid of the rest of the Mercedes I am gong to sell and just
keep the ones I am going to, and be done with the headache/losses! I HATE

You on the other hand are probably screwed, particularly when they find

Re: [MBZ] 1987 300SDL

2007-12-28 Thread Dave H...
Kaleb,

This couple was very knowledgeable prior to buying this vehicle that the AC
did not work properly (not cold enough).

After talking with the wife, at length last night, it turns out that the car
was putting out exorbitant heat last week - so much so that they had to
drive with the windows and sun roof open. Who in their right minds would
continue to drive an automobile like that without trying to determine what
the cause of this error was? When I looked at the climate control lever
last night it was set on cool Minimum.

I had a similar occurrence with my ladies 84 300DT last summer. Anyone
could hear that compressor pulley making the belt squeal. Solution?
Simple - Don't turn on the AC until I could have it properly serviced.
Surely this compressor/compressor pulley did not lock down all at once for
the first time

Have I mentioned how frustrated I am with selling vehicles to friend's and
them clearly knowing no warranty was either expressed or implied and then
demanding that I fix a problem? I had already split the cost of repairing
the starter solenoid with them after they had the car two weeks.

Hell I would have made a deal like that with you :) It had to have been
very loud but you know how some women are, they dont pay attention. I
 cant
believe the compressor pulley locked up. If the compressor itself locked
 up
the klima relay would have kicked it out, unless somebody had it wired up
 to
run all the time because something in the system was bad, then the clutch
would have stayed kicked in and melted the belt. Otherwise the pulley
itself would have locked up but I dont think I have ever seen that happen.

Well everyone of you hit it right on the head.

I found a flashlight (Not a small deed in and of itself in this house)
 :)
 Went out and looked.

It appears as though the AC Compressor locked down and actually melted
 the
 serpentine belt.

I have seen belts break but never one melt (I had it replaced
 approximately
7 months ago) but melt it certainly did.

How in the heck she could have been driving the vehicle and not heard the
belt screeching is way beyond me.

Now he, the husband, wants to know when I can have it repaired? Told him
flat out nope not going to happen - but I can recommend a good shop for
 this
 non technical work.

Sold him the car at a loss to make his wife happy and I am financing it
 for
him, interest free - repair it as well? I don't think so!

Sometimes a friendship can be pushed to far.

an 8=12k automatic raise IIRC) Principals start a bit under a top

As a teacher friend told me, try getting a copy of a 1960's school

leaps and bounds in the last 30-40 years. In 1975, my local schools
had three principals, one superindendent, and a teacher worked
2 hours a day as athletic director. Since then, enrollment has
gone up 15-20%, we have four principals and I don't know how
many assistant principals, the athletic director has been a full

--- Kaleb C. Striplin, work [EMAIL PROTECTED]
wrote:

Problem is, the way things are today that they
 probably wouldnt back you up.

That's the real root of the issue. At the high school
I was teaching at there is a very clearly defined
dress code (a district-wide one, for that matter.)
You would have these teenage girls come in with their
boobs about to pop out of their blouses, yet nothing
would be said about it. If you as a teacher, turned
them in, and you were a male teacher, you couldn't
specify what their dress code violation was, as it
would imply that you were looking at their boobs.
That meant that if you tried to enforce the rules, you
were in trouble. All you could do was send them to
the office with a note about checking the dress code
and nothing more.

That way, if someone accused you of staring at their
chest, you could just say that a student complained,
you didn't know what the reason was, so you sent them
down.

As a result, the dress code was rarely ever enforced,
since it was more trouble to do so, or you could risk
some sort of backlash from turning the student in.

There are other schools in the district where dress
code violations are not tolerated - period. That's
because the principal has dictated that they will be
enforced. In the case of my school it wasn't, and as
a result, the parents would complain if they got
called about their kid's clothing (consider that Mom
Dad sent them to school that way, too.)

This is a good example of how the principal can make
or break you without any direct interaction...

I am learning - SLOW but learning. :)

Two nights ago sold a 68 280SE to a local person. This time a full contract

Loan at 12% interest, three calendar days late a $50.00 penalty, non payment
for thirty days automatic repossession. I have a lien on the title and he
must provide proof of insurance with me as the lien holder being the primary

Yep, IMO used car salesmen get a bad rep from everyone - no matter what
 they
do they get blamed - no matter how hard they try to make the customer
 happy
 they still get blamed.

Dude! You gotta stop making interest free loans - that costs you money -
and you need paper saying if they want out or don;t make payments the
ownership stays with *you* as being the sole owner. The registration can
stay in your name as long as they have insurance, pay the
 title/registration
fees and make all payments as agreeed. Then, if they stop sending you
 money
or making payments, it will be easy to get the vehicle back - relatively
 speaking of course.

There are ways but at some point the friendship will become strained -
 which
is better than destroying it they way they have been treating you.

They want a business warranty while having a friends loan. You in deep
 do-doo. ;-)

In he future, if someone wants to buy a car you own, put it in an
 impartial
parties hands and let them sell it to them. I bet your friends walks
 away.

 Take care -

get the feeling that some people just don't possess something making
them worthy of owning a Mercedes? I am beginning to wonder if perhaps
 they
would not have been happier with a dependable/beat up looking pick up?

So far this year I have lost my shirt selling Mercedes vehicles. Mostly
 to
people I knew some on EBay and no one ever seems happy with their
 purchases.
It seems the harder I work to help someone else the more it comes back to
bite me in the A! I have a 300D manual right now a beautiful Dark Brick
Red color it has some challenges all minor. I sold that one on EBay for
 a
$2,000.00 loss, allowed the guy to store it here and agreed to just take
interest free payments until it was all paid for. Six months later the

Speaking of the Superintendent position - here in Chesterfield County Va
there have been some controversaries when a Super was released - when
actually they were fired for cause. Yet the board voted to pay the
contract - sometimes amounting to millions of $$'s/

When it happened the 2nd or 3rd time the citizens raised so much cain that
they found a reason to stop making payments/

I wonder if this happens in other areas?

Teachers around here (Michigan) seem to make $40k-100k depending
on district, experience, and education. (master's degree is about
an 8=12k automatic raise IIRC) Principals start a bit under a top
teacher, and then go up to $150k or so. The real money is in the
 Superintendent's wages.

As a teacher friend told me, try getting a copy of a 1960's school
district budget. See what percentage of the total is non-teaching
payroll and benefits. Then get the current budget, calculate the
same percentage, and compare the two. Useless payroll has grown by
leaps and bounds in the last 30-40 years. In 1975, my local schools
had three principals, one superindendent, and a teacher worked
2 hours a day as athletic director. Since then, enrollment has
gone up 15-20%, we have four principals and I don't know how
many assistant principals, the athletic director has been a full
time job for at least 15 years and I think he has a secretary now, ...

Kaleb,

This couple was very knowledgeable prior to buying this vehicle that
 the AC
did not work properly (not cold enough).

After talking with the wife, at length last night, it turns out that
 the car
was putting out exorbitant heat last week - so much so that they had to

drive with the windows and sun roof open. Who in their right minds
 would
continue to drive an automobile like that without trying to determine
 what
the cause of this error was? When I looked at the climate control
 lever
last night it was set on cool Minimum.

I had a similar occurrence with my ladies 84 300DT last summer. Anyone

could hear that compressor pulley making the belt squeal. Solution?
Simple - Don't turn on the AC until I could have it properly serviced.

Surely this compressor/compressor pulley did not lock down all at once
 for
the first time

Have I mentioned how frustrated I am with selling vehicles to friend's
 and
them clearly knowing no warranty was either expressed or implied and
 then
demanding that I fix a problem? I had already split the cost of
 repairing
the starter solenoid with them after they had the car two weeks.

A car deal gone south can hurt a friendship in a hurry.

I sold a 1978 Olds Cutlass to my Sister In-law 3 months later, I got
 a
call. She litterally screamed at me through the phone. The car was at a
local garage with 2 blow head gaskets she accused me of selling her a
 lemon.

I asked what happen and she stated that the red Hot light came on. I
asked what she did next and she stated that she drove it (17 miles) to
 a
friends house. And why? Because her friend had a phone she could use -
 this was pre-cell phone.

As it turns out, the radiator spring a leak the coolent ran low. This
was 100% her fault but if you ask her today, 20 years later, she will
still tell you that I sold her a lemon. At least I didn't finance the
 car.

You on the other hand are probably screwed, particularly when they find
out the compressor replacement cost possibly the head replacement
cost. They can't afford either. If they could then you would not be
 financing the car.

The guy where I work who does that stuff seems to usually buy from
newegg.

Myself I would not bother just buy a Dell off the shelf and be done
with it. Unless you are needing high-end components or just like to
tinker you won't save enough to be worth your time.

If your PC is really old and you just want to jump a few years forward
check out a used PC, you can get them for next to nothing, maybe pop a
new hard drive in if the current one is too small or questionable.

I use http://www.pricewatch.com/ and Google shopping
(http://www.google.com/prdhp?hl=entab=wf) to find stuff. Pricewatch
includes shipping in the price comparison, google does not. Vendors
have to pay for placement in Pricewatch, Google is free once they work
out the details of the data feed.

The Asus M2A-VM HDMI motherboard is priced right at $80 from Amazon, a
matching AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4800+ 2.5GHz processor is $100,
Kingston has 2 gig of ECC DDR2 800 Ram for $60.
That will give you a barebones system that will output 1080p HDMI to
your new TV. You will need a copy of CyberLink Power DVD Ultra to play
HD-DVD and Blu-Ray movies - plus a HD reader of course. You can get a
copy of XP Media Center Edition cheap off eBay, or go for Vista
Ultimate - and turn it into a Tivo-like recorder. If you have cable,
you can get the ATI CableCard USB HDTV box for $300 and watch and
record HD TV. Add a TV Tuner and/or HDTV tuner to get on-air
broadcasts.
XP Media Center Edition limits you to 4 tuners, Vista only does 2.
500Gb Sata drives are $90.

I happen to be putting one of these together this week.

When I built my own PC (2003, pre-Mac) I used newegg - best service, one
source for all my parts, good reputation, and I got free shipping at the
time. Plus they source their memory from Crucial (Micron) which is one of
the better memory suppliers. I didn't want to futz around with multiple
stores shipping at different times and I built my computer for ~$400 with
excellent components. Still runs today; it's now my parents' computer.

The guy where I work who does that stuff seems to usually buy from
 newegg.

Myself I would not bother just buy a Dell off the shelf and be done
with it. Unless you are needing high-end components or just like to
tinker you won't save enough to be worth your time.

If your PC is really old and you just want to jump a few years forward
check out a used PC, you can get them for next to nothing, maybe pop a
new hard drive in if the current one is too small or questionable.

not at all. i'm on an einstein kick lately and that man is the genuine
blood article.

it's actually any easy line to follow. albert has 3 known children, but
only 1 lives to have children. that one has 3 children, one died in infancy
in 1938, one is adopted (who makes claims to being actually albert's
illegitimate child, but this claim cannot be substantiated) and is still
alive and the third is the pictured dr einstein. so dr einstein, md, and
his 3 children are the only living legitimate blood descendents to the
famous dr albert einstein.

put the hair on him though and the resemblance is pretty clear, huh?

Their prices are reasonable. You can do better from wierd Eddie's internet

Really the best deal in my mind is to buy a Dell or HP or something, its hard

Teachers around here (Michigan) seem to make $40k-100k depending
on district, experience, and education. (master's degree is about
an 8=12k automatic raise IIRC) Principals start a bit under a top
teacher, and then go up to $150k or so. The real money is in the
 Superintendent's wages.

As a teacher friend told me, try getting a copy of a 1960's school
district budget. See what percentage of the total is non-teaching
payroll and benefits. Then get the current budget, calculate the
same percentage, and compare the two. Useless payroll has grown by
leaps and bounds in the last 30-40 years. In 1975, my local
 schools
had three principals, one superindendent, and a teacher worked
2 hours a day as athletic director. Since then, enrollment has
gone up 15-20%, we have four principals and I don't know how
many assistant principals, the athletic director has been a full
time job for at least 15 years and I think he has a secretary now,

When I built my own PC (2003, pre-Mac) I used newegg - best service,
 one
source for all my parts, good reputation, and I got free shipping at
 the
time. Plus they source their memory from Crucial (Micron) which is one
 of
the better memory suppliers. I didn't want to futz around with
 multiple
stores shipping at different times and I built my computer for ~$400
 with
excellent components. Still runs today; it's now my parents' computer.

If you want a Maxtor 80GB 7200 RPM hard drive, I have a brand-new one
 under
my bed that never been used. Make me an offer.

See I dont really need to upgrade everything. When I do upgrade I just
 buy
the board etc and swap over my hard drive, cd drives etc
One other question, Im trying to remember the windows command that
 brings
up the options to check what programs load when it starts up. I have a

computer at work that is VERY slow and want to manually select or
 deselect
which programs load at startup. There is some command that you run
 that
brings up a window that lists everything that loads and you can
 unselect
what you dont want to load.

Re: [MBZ] how the world has changed

2007-12-28 Thread LWB250
I'm lucky to work for a principal who is very hands
off unless you need her. She's also someone who you
know will back you up, no matter what, as long as you
arrived at the decision you made in a logical manner.

There are too many administrators, who, faced with an
angry parent, will cave in to avoid a confrontation or
to have a conflict escalated to a higher authority.
Parents know this, so if they take someone on they
know to expect to get their way in many cases. This
leaves you, the teacher in question, looking like an
ass, not to mention swinging in the wind in a
figurative sense. Your authority is now compromised,
meaning you have lost control of your classroom.

It's a sad thing, and even more so, it's sad because
it's not the kids, it the parents.

I'm still willing to help list members with their Mercedes providing they
are stopping by to learn something.

If you do a valve adjustment on someone's car, you'll be doing it forever,
but if you teach them how to do it, you **SHOULDN'T*** have to do it ever
again. There was a neighbor kid who always had trouble tuning his RC car
engine to run properly, so I thought I'd just tune it for him. Every few
days, he would come to me and complain that it wasn't running right. Even
when I explained to him how to do it, he would end up messing with it and it
wouldn't run at all. I ended up selling him one of my cars, and that one
never did run right once he started tweaking the settings. I think both of
them are reduced to parts now or have been forgotten.

Re: [MBZ] WAS 1987 300SDL NOW helping with repairs

2007-12-28 Thread R A Bennell
The unfortunate thing is that some people really don't want to do anything for
themselves and will take advantage
of anyone who offers to assist. I have a nephew who is struggling somewhat. He
is now married and they have one
child. He never went to school beyond high school and has had difficulty
finding a job that will support them. He
has chosen somewhat wisely in that they now have a house. However they have no
vehicle and rely on the kindness of
various family members whenever there is a gathering. He buses it to work and
back. I had an old Ford sedan that no
one appeared willing to buy (ultimately did sell it for a whole lot less than I
had in it but that is another
story). In any event, I voiced the thought that we should give it to Matt to
help them out. My wise wife said we
should not as unfortunately, Matt is the type that will then expect me to
maintain or repair it forever and will
complain at every family function that we gave him a car that was junk. I took
her advice and did not offer it to
him. The result is that he is still without a car but could have driven that
old LTD for a long time with any sort
of minimal ongoing maintenance. It had a totally rebuilt 302 and AT. Was simple
enough not to have power windows or
locks etc - No AC and a solid frame so that rust in the body would not make it
unsafe for a long time. One of my
son's friends paid us $1G for it and has driven it for almost a year without
incident - even smacked the back of
another car hard enough to cause the poor kid some significant back discomfort
for a couple of weeks without doing
any damage to the LTD. Don't ask about the little Japanese import that he hit
from behind.

End of rant

Re: [MBZ] OT, computer supplies

2007-12-28 Thread Curt Raymond

I have a 2 year old Samsung 17 that is the best computer monitor I've ever had
hands down.
Its VERY bright, and has a matte screen so glare is not an issue. I've had to
turn the brightness down to something like 35%...

I'm now thinking of getting a 21 Samsung for my primary monitor and moving the
17 to my secondary system.

[MBZ] OT: Welding day

2007-12-28 Thread Curt Raymond
My dad said I couldn't consider myself a welder until I'd lit my pants on fire.

Check...

I managed to weld a piece of stovepipe around a perforated snowmobile muffler.
It looks AWFUL but I think it'll hold at least for a little while.
Based on today I might be ready to try a little sheetmetal on a car... I might
have to buy Dwights 240D just as a welding project... Where to get a microwave?
;)

Oh and for you amatuer welders out there: a self darkening welding helmet makes
ALL the difference in the world.

Well, the transmission, interior, and bumpers make it a pretty desirable
model to a number of people on the list. If the original purchaser does back
out, you shouldn't have any trouble selling it here.

I'd be very interested if you were physically close, and if I hadn't had a

I bet your friends walks
 away.

 Take care -

Re: [MBZ] Climate Control Failure Mode

2007-12-28 Thread Dave M.
Yikes, Casey. That's a scary photo. And I thought my 300E was bad!
What I did to clean the fins was use a shop vacuum, and a toothbrush,
to scrape and suck away as much as possible, without pushing it
further into the core. I then used a foaming evaporator cleaner from a
local HVAC supply store to attempt further cleaning. I rinsed it with
water from a garden sprayer tank... the liquid runs out the bottom
drain tubes onto the floor. While it looked a lot prettier afterwards,
I didn't notice any significant improvement in HVAC performance, but
mine wasn't nearly as bad as yours. Here are photos of my my evap
cleaning project - only one side was occluded on mine, though:

I used Nu-Calgon Evap Foam cleaner, roughly $10/can - here's a link:
http://tinyurl.com/cdddo

This is a good reason to use the filters that Aaron Lam obtained
through some contacts in Japan... it helps keep this crud out of your
evaporator. Bummer they're so expensive, and so hard to obtain. It's a
worse bummer that the factory didn't start using filters on the 124
chassis the until 1994 model year. And, worse yet, the factory setup
can't be retrofitted without replacing the *entire* HVAC box (i.e.,
gutting the entire car)... you can't just add the factory filters to
an 86-93 model.

I'll bet my heater/cooler output increases measurably after this little
 exercise.

some of you might be familiar with mike trei from his contributions to
the star magazine or from other publications he has written for. mike
lives in manhattan for about $400 a month in an apartment his family has
been in since the 1920s.

I have heard stories that the bureaucracy at schools is fat

Teachers around here (Michigan) seem to make $40k-100k
depending on district, experience, and education. (master's
degree is about an 8=12k automatic raise IIRC) Principals
start a bit under a top teacher, and then go up to $150k or
so. The real money is in the Superintendent's wages.

As a teacher friend told me, try getting a copy of a 1960's
school district budget. See what percentage of the total is
non-teaching payroll and benefits. Then get the current
budget, calculate the same percentage, and compare the two.
Useless payroll has grown by leaps and bounds in the last
30-40 years. In 1975, my local
 schools
had three principals, one superindendent, and a teacher worked
2 hours a day as athletic director. Since then, enrollment has

gone up 15-20%, we have four principals and I don't know how
many assistant principals, the athletic director has been a
full time job for at least 15 years and I think he has a
 secretary now,
