Of course, compared to an '85 Civic, any MB would serve you well. But
you have to remember that your survival is mostly determined by the
design of the thing you run into. Here's an illustration of what happens

Here (VA), the homeschooling orgaization provides many outside opportunities
for choldren to interact with others. ALso, my Daughter keeps our g-son
involved with numerous activties at the local YMCA. He probably has more
friends whole homeschooling that he would during public school. Between
school, soccer, baseball, piano, basketball, drama classes, and more, his
time is full of children who can be friends and adults who can be role
models. I hope to convince my daughter that me teaching him how to shoot
would be a positive thing. I fear the propaganda she was exposed to for
years in public school has provided a false image of shooting, guns and
shooting sports. But that's another topic.

In short, my G son is very well rounded with many children around his own
age to interact with as well as adults who can help him grow.

But everything depends on the child and parents.

you wrote:oldest is seven and has the diction of a three year old

Hmm - maybe your BIL thinks he can do a better job than was done by previous
schooling? I guess that was public ed?

Anyway -- homeschooling requires a few things to succeed. First, one or
both parents must have the time determination to hold regular classes with
structured class work. Second, the child/children must be willing to listen
to a parent and absorb the info without special help the parent may be
unable to provide. Some children crave structure - it's born into them just
as wildness is born into others. One type will work with homeschooling and
the other will prove difficult. Also, the parent doing the teaching must be
able to be firm enough to command respect and concentration during the hours
of schooling.

My daughter is very structured - always was - from being age 1 yr and up she
was fascinated by things concerning schooling, education, - even office
equipment - all got her attention.Give her an adding machine and she'd
be occupied for hours on end. Our sons OTOH, had short attention spans and
little use for school unless forced to. My youngest went to Catholic school
for a while and 1st thing he did when getting home was his homework - no
playing, tv or dinner got in his way. The reason? He feared the Nuns who
taught the classes. When he transferred to public school his grades dropped
like a rock - because the teachers didn't seem concerned if he did his work
or not. No homework? no problem - you get a zero. Once we figured out
what was going on we made sure he feared us as he had the Nuns. And his
grades improved.

Anyway - not every child nor every parent is made for homeschooling. BTW,
home schooling has gone on for years - there are many children growing up
on cruising sailboats that spend their time on the open ocean and in ports
all over the world - in addition to the education they get by traveling the
parents generally teach according to a subscription they buy that provides
all classroom materials enabling the parents to open their book and teach
without additional preparation. Also, many children of parents who work in
remote areas of the world that do not have the luxury of a company or govt
school must teach their children themselves or send them to private school.

I agree with Don.

Child Services (DHR in Alabama) is the most over worked government
organization in any state. The problem is that the workers have to
obtain unrefutable evidence then they have to present the evidence to a
Judge the judge has to issue a court order to have the child or
children removed. All of this is necessary because of our lawsuit happy
society. The Chld Services workers have to protect themselves from being
sued by the parents of the children they are trying to protect.

Based on Kaleb's his Wive's comments on the kid's overall condition,
Kaleb's new family are a likely good example of the system failing.
It's possible that the family had been investigated but Child Services
could not put together enough evidence to convince a judge to issue a
court order. But it's just as likely that they were never investigated
because of the work load most Child Services must carry.

My Niece was removed from her Mother 4 years too late - She was 13 years
old. Kaleb's new family are younger and they have a chance to make a
 difference.

There's a fellow on Mercedesshop who put a 5sp OD in a 190 turbo. He
got 39mpg on an extended trip at 75-80. I read things on the net like
this that give me the impression the W124 might have less aero drag
than the W201. The overdrive and lack of torque converter should have
gotten the 190D owner more than 2 mpg. (unless Don's tires are undersized
and his ODO reads high)

Yeah. I forgot to repeat what I wrote in an earlier post: that she
thinks the 126s are too big. I have one, a 300SD. She's driven it,
and doesn't like to.

So to reiterate, the criteria are:
• old and cute: square classic shape, hubcaps painted body color.
* Not too big--123 sized. 126s are too big
*Not too small--201s are too small
* Not too new--124s look too generic
* Gasser

She may have to settle for a 617 in a 123. I think the cuteness
factor of a 300CD would win her over, or maybe a TD--she likes
wagons, and as a jr. high science teacher who does lots of hands-on
experiments, she loads her saab wagon up frequently. I think if I
always did the fill-ups, had a block heater installed, and maybe even
got some earlier wheels and hubcaps and had them painted, she'd be
happy.

How cold are we talking about? Cold means very different things to different
people.

I just bought another Group 49 from Autozone to put in my 190D and it seems
fine, we've hit -3F since I've had it and there have been no issues.
I put another battery just like it in the '83 240D 2 years ago and it was good
at -10F, below that without the block heater that car was iffy to start no
matter what.

Hi, all -

It is another cold winter here in northeastern New Mexico, and the
battery on the wife's 300CD has again taken a crap. It shows as fully
charged when I hook up the charger, but there are no cold cranking amps
and it won't turn the engine over fast enough to get it going.

So now I must ask - last year, the same thing happened and I went to
Auto Zone and bought what I was told was their best for cold cranking
amps. Their best turned out to be garbage. What do you all recommend
 for
the best, no holds barred get it started in the winter battery?

Anything designed after the 126 gets that reaction. So, I'm enjoying

If the battery gets sulfated from storage, you won't get any amps to
speak of, but the voltage can be quite high after you recharge.

Does the car overcharge the battery?

But slow and thirsty (if FI), or thirsty and cranky (if carbed).

I find it ironic and a little sad that the 124 is dismissed as too generic
by the lady in question and so many others. It was such a distinctive shape
in 1985. The only reason it looks like every other '90s car now is that
every other carmaker took styling cues from it. Same for the 201---anyone
remember the first Mazda Protege? And the Audi 5000---another great '80s
design diminished by Ford's crude aping of it with the first Taurus.

This is true. 111 bodies starting in 59 and 110 bodies starting in

first generation crumple zones. I think the 59 Tom refers to is a Ponton.

Two of my family members have walked away from hits that could have
been fatal in a lesser car.

Not to put a damper on things, but despite its size the W201 is a much
safer car than a W123. The W123 was the last MB that was not
specifically designed for offset frontal impact (that started with the
126 and 201). The 123 also doesn't have seatbelt pre-tensioners,
airbags, or ABS. And you can forget the 115. Those cars predate the
construction of MB's crash engineering facility (1968), so a lot of the
safety engineering was done under pretty primitive conditions.

Your best bet might be a W124. The size feels like a W123 but the crash
performance is as good as a W126.

Of course, compared to an '85 Civic, any MB would serve you well. But
you have to remember that your survival is mostly determined by the
design of the thing you run into. Here's an illustration of what happens
to a safe big old car that hits a safe small new car:

I agree the 190 would be perfect for my wife, who is rather petite.
However, she was involved in a terrible accident in a civic once that
had her sleeping on a board and in physical therapy for 6 months
after being hit so hard by a drunk that it knocked the earings out of
her pierced ears. She wants something more substantial feeling,
whether or not the 201 is statistically safer than a 123.. She also
likes the classic square vintage mbz look, and thinks the newer ones
are far too generic. And she doesn't want a diesel for her own car,
and frankly, as many short trips as she drives, a diesel doesn't make
a lot of sense for her.

Thanks again, all. I'll let you know what turns up. Meanwhile, if
anyone has anything else to offer--a 115 with a known good blower
motor, for instance, or a finny in great shape for cheap, let me
 know! :-)

Saab 99/900 are pretty safe cars for their age. Right up there with MBZ
and Volvo from the '70's. I'm not so sure about the crash ratings on
 the
earlier cars (92, 95, 96), but if she wants old, small, funky, and
 wagon,
a Saab 95 would do it. She might really like a Saab 99 three door

Re: [MBZ] OT:Unified Germany - I thought the communists lost

2008-01-08 Thread LarryT
Hi Mitch -
You don't have to convince me -- I have to convince my daughter! All
the years of propaganda beaten into her by her so-called teachers failed to
mention what might happen when a very inquisitive little boy (my g'son to a
T) finds a gun somewhere - in the street, in someones house or his dads
closet - they *must* know how to either 1. leave it alone or 2., Unload
it - and really know when it's unloaded as the 10 yr olds friend seemed to
know.

To me, getting a bb gun when between 6 10 is a right of passage just
like getting your 1st pocket knife. Sure, some kids in cities don't have
the opportunity to target shoot plink those in the country do - but there
are places the parents could take them so they could shoot them and learn
something that will stay with them their whole life. When they graduate to
a .22 or shotgun they will know what the power of a gun really is. Seeing
it on TV is not convincing no matter how much fake blood they throw around.

You're 100% correct -- a child who isn;t taght the proper way to respect
a firearm is an accidnt waiting to happen. Now, there;s going to be some on
this list who will say I didn;t have training and I didn;t get shot.
Count yourself lucky. Frtunately, gun accidents among children under 14 is
incredibly low - the anti gun people claim a incredibly high number which
can only be justified when Children are defined as being up to 24 years
old which includes those who participate in gangs and drugs - both very
dangerous activities - because the real stat is fewer children are killed by
guns than drown in bath tubs every year. I wonder why we don't hear a cry
to ban bath tubs?

Anyway -- I see your point -- ;-)

WOW! 37.4 mpg is very good! I assume it's a Turbo? The best my '91
 300D
 2.5T has gotten since I
bought it in Feb 06 has been around 32 or 33 mpg.

You need to keep that 300D in great condition!! It's a keeper!

Re: [MBZ] OT:Unified Germany - I thought the communists lost

I think the better approach would be to pass a law prohibiting children
from touching weapons unless an adult is around to supervise. That
would fix the problem right there.

If you don't teach him, he's just another statistic waiting to happen.
Here's an example that really happened: 10 year old gets permission to
go home with a latchkey after school. Latchkey goes to parents bedroom,
comes out with a loaded 12ga. Visiting kid unloads it and puts it on the
parent's bed with the action open. Do you want your grandson to be like
the visitor in this story, or the poor kid in the morgue?

[MBZ] cruise control amp

2008-01-08 Thread hans hansel
I took the advice from this group and pulled the cruise control amp from my
84 300d. Tried applying heat to all the solder connections on the back of
the board, but I learned that I'm not as good with a soldering iron as I
thought. I wound up about halfway through before I melted my fingers.

I reinstalled the amp and it hold cruise for about a minute, then
disengages. The accelerate function works ok.

So now I'm looking for a replacement 13 pin amp, part #7932.

Anyone got any ideas where I can find one?

[MBZ] Has anybody ever

2008-01-08 Thread Curt Raymond
I know you lot are bad ones to ask to talk me out of something so...
The trans in my Dakota is probably not long for this world, its working
adequately for now but who knows about the future. I could probably put in a
used one for $1200 or so.
But
Theres an auction place not far from work that has an '01 Ford F150 4x4 that
appears to have been used as a chase vehicle (white, low end, and has the
lights on top) that didn't sell in the last auction. The next is tomorrow night.
Now its way high miles (like 190,000) but I'm thinking as a chase vehicle most
of that would be relatively low speed highway stuff.

Anyway I'm gonna go give it a look tomorrow, if its in decent shape I figure to
put $1500 on it. I'll keep my Dakota for the moment to see how things shape up.
At that price if it pukes I'm not out so much and maybe I can sell some parts
to recoup some of my investment.

Opinions?

oil leak where if I went above 60MPH oil poured out... Normally I get

2008-01-08 Thread RELNGSON
There were a very few 230s imported by MBNA in the '70s; they are very
rare.  Imagine the performance of an NA 300D with none of the advantages
 of a 300D. .

Yes, I remember this and the story at the time was they were only marketed in
the eastern part of the country where there were no real hills to climb.
Having owned a 300D, I wouldn't use the word performance too much in
discussions
of it.

Re: [MBZ] Best battery for 300D

2008-01-08 Thread ernest breakfield
hi Lee!

why not let the Mercedes roadside service guys come out and test
your charging system (for free) and install a new MBZ battery if it's
necessary? doesn't cost much (if any) more than many other batteries, in
my experience, and will eliminate some of the variables. besides, that
way you get to let the MBZ tech wrestle with fitting the battery into
the tight squeeze that the CD has,... ;-)
but frankly, if her car is chewing up batteries in a year of
*normal* service, it sounds like there's other problems that you need to
identify and correct first,...

cheers!

What do you all recommend for
the best, no holds barred get it started in the winter battery?

to the odo on my friend's Toyota. (my odo had slipping gear syndrome)
We filled up at the same time, even though the SD had lots of fuel
left when the Corolla had to stop for gas.
A PO had put P225 x 80 x 14 tires on it, so it was geared a bit higher than
normal. I rarely drove over 80 on that trip, probably averaged low to mid
70's. Driving hundreds of miles without a cold start sure helps the mileage.
Mine might do 30mpg if I drove 60mph on those big tires for 500 miles nonstop.

I know you lot are bad ones to ask to talk me out of something so...
The trans in my Dakota is probably not long for this world, its working
adequately for now but who knows about the
future. I could probably put in a used one for $1200 or so.
But
Theres an auction place not far from work that has an '01 Ford F150 4x4 that
appears to have been used as a chase
vehicle (white, low end, and has the lights on top) that didn't sell in the
last auction. The next is tomorrow
night.
Now its way high miles (like 190,000) but I'm thinking as a chase vehicle most
of that would be relatively low
speed highway stuff.

Anyway I'm gonna go give it a look tomorrow, if its in decent shape I figure to
put $1500 on it. I'll keep my
Dakota for the moment to see how things shape up.
At that price if it pukes I'm not out so much and maybe I can sell some parts
to recoup some of my investment.

Opinions?

Here's an example that really happened: 10 year old gets permission to

Re: [MBZ] Fuel economy report

2008-01-08 Thread OK Don
OK - it's hard for me to beleive as well. Here's what I did -- new
Kuhmo tires - the right size, aired up to 2Lb. over spec., drove the
speed limit (shocking - but I did it this time), and used the GPS for
an odometer, since the one in the car doesn't work. Maybe the GPS
isn't right? Streets and Trips shows 914 miles for the trip, the GPS
recorded 455 miles for the first half of it, including finding out
that our exit was closed, and getting lost trying to find the motel.
The extra 97 miles were local exploring and a trip to work when we got
back before filling it the last time. So, the GPS distance seems
reasonable.
The previous trip where I measured mileage resulted in 33 mpg - that
was to Albuquerque with 3 and bags instead of 2 on this trip.

On Jan 8, 2008 8:11 AM, Mitch Haley [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 OK Don wrote:

Yup. I saw 37 mpg at the first fuel stop, and figured I hadn't filled
the tank, but it kept it the whole trip.

 Mitch.

M110 appeared in the 123 in both injected and POS Solex carb versions.

I'm trying to remember how the W114 worked. The 250 was either a 2.5L
M114 or a 2.8L M130, right? The 280 was M110.

Wasn't there a 230TE wagon in later years? I thought someone on here
 had one.

Yep, 1980-'86 (yes, 1986). Also a 230CE until '85. The 230CE
four-speed is my favorite Mercedes of the era. Simply wonderful car.

Re: [MBZ] 230/250

2008-01-08 Thread RELNGSON
I know you were referring to the 230, but there have been some comments
about the 250.  In later model 250's they had the 2.8 six cylinder
(M110?). they were actually pretty stout and had significant pickup.  I
agree they were very thirsty.  When the twin carbs were out of adjustment on
mine, I remember getting 9-10 mpg.

My first MB was a '72 250 2.8 and for the period it was a nice car. Looked
good, inside and out. Just about the right size. OK performance, certainly
nothing special but the fuel consumption was indeed godawful. Considering it's
weight, 2998 lbs (so said the manual), 12-14 mpg commuting with a best ever 17
point something highway was marginal then and out of the question these days.
The
next one, a '73 450SE, was only about 1 mpg less (summertime) and offered a
great deal more.

The 114 was typically an M130 around here. Good
engine, as long as you took care of the head every
100k or so.

I always back-fill the head through the upper radiator hose.
