Re: [MBZ] OT: Audi S4
Frequent issues are: -crumbling suspension rubber, especially in the back, will cause extremely squirrelly handling (just like a W201/W124 when the rubber wears out) -N75 boost control valve failure -wiring, wiring, wiring. Relays are located, among other places, in driver's kickplate area, which can get wet if the windshield has been badly replaced/sealed, or if there's a lot of condensation -rubber intake plumbing gets brittle and breaks, causing air metering issues, boost cutoff, and stalling. -the medusa-like coolant hose with the integrated Y-junction tends to fail. It is expensive. -check for a recall on fuel lines to/from inline filter (they run near the turbo, and I guess there have been a few flamethrowers as a result) -heater fan motor bearings and brushes -climate control def/foot flap motor failure can be a pain because of the labour required to get to it -trim strips on body tend to corrode and eject themselves On the other hand: The people who have this car are obsessed with it. It is VERY fast, solid, and retains the quirkiness of the 5 cylinder engine with modern updates (eg. LH- instead of KE-jetronic fuel injection) http://www.s-cars.org/ and a buyer's guide... http://web.archive.org/web/20040730172050/www.urs4.com/S4S6/S4S6_buyers_guide.html On Jan 8, 2008 2:24 PM, Zeitgeist [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm considering picking up a '93 Audi 100 S4 as my winter rig (230 hp 20v 2.3L five cylinder w/AWD). There are still applications where Fiber Channel is king. It gives you a level of determinism you simply can't get from Ethernet. Sure, some kids in cities don't have the opportunity to target shoot plink those in the country do - but there are places the parents could take them so they could shoot them and learn something that will stay with them their whole life. Re: [MBZ] OT: Fibre channel?
Reminds me of the Token Ring days. Using a switching infrastructure removes the collision delays of Ethernet. If it's that critical, bump it up to Gigabit or 10Gb and the benefits of Fibre disappear. [MBZ] 123 coupe electrical confusion
I agree with Jim Cathey, as I recently performed the aluminum foil treatment of the light piping channels for the instrument cluster suggested by Craig McCluckey and my dash lights are indeed bright enough to dim approximately 1/3 of the way and are still brighter than they were prior to the aluminum foil treatment. On another subject, my turn signals and 4way flahers were behaving really weird and Jim C. suggested off-list that this could be caused by dirty contacts in the 4way flasher switch. Well, success, success, I removed the 4way flasher switch, opened it up and the contacts were rather ugly looking, so I cleaned 'em with a Scotch-Brite, applied a small amount of conductive grease to all the contacts as well as the connecting pins, and reassembled the switch and all is working correctly again. Oh man I did one of those in the 123, I am guessing it is generally a similar PITA. I can't help you specifically on the 126, but what I did was study the pics well (such as it was with the CD manual) and get all that in my head so what I felt with my finger(s) could be translated against what I saw. Being blind could probably help in this case, what with enhanced fingers sensing being your mechanism for seeing. As I recall I could sorta see the element but not at the same time as contorting myself to touch it with one hand/ finger or get a wrench on the bolts, so it was mostly all by feel. The union controls the state legislature - Take a look at - at some of the problems outlined at http://www.city-journal.org/html/7_2_how_teachers.html The current contract between the Board of Education and the UFT can best be described as a we-don't-do-windows document. Among the tasks that principals are forbidden to require of teachers under the contract: attending more than one staff meeting per month after school hours, walking the children to a school bus, patrolling the hallways or the lunchroom or the schoolyard, covering an extra class in an emergency, attending a lunchtime staff meeting, or coming in a few days prior to the opening of school each September to do some planning. And disciplinary action - what a joke The contract makes it almost insurmountably difficult for a principal even to begin the process of charging a teacher with incompetence under the union-written state education law. Every time the principal wants to record a negative evaluation in the teacher's personnel file, the teacher can contest that single entry through three separate grievance procedures, leading all the way up to the Board of Education. Even after the Board has upheld the principal, the teacher, with the help of the union, can go to arbitration to contest the single negative entry. The process is so tortuous that most principals don't even bother trying; they accept it as a fact of school life that a certain number of incompetent teachers must be carried on the payroll. and He told me that in the case of one totally dysfunctional teacher, he has spent close to 100 hours out of the building over the past two years in grievance sessions at the district office, at the Board of Education, and at arbitration sessions. Although every one of his negative evaluations has eventually been upheld, he still must go through the process for another year before this one employee might have to face formal disciplinary charges-a process that could take several more years The above is from just one of many articles about the power abuses of *our* public education system. It's truely an embarassment to see what this has done to countless students. Hopefully public outrage will force Germany to change its laws about home schooling at some point. Re: [MBZ] OT:Education
Part of their deal is that parent(s) have some degree of participation too, whether single, multiple, various combinations of mommies/daddies, whatever. That is one element of success. Another is discipline -- peer, school, and self-imposed in a positive way. Kids learn to learn and behave and succeed and derive satisfaction and pride in that. There is no mystery to successfully educating (not teaching), if that is what the purpose is. If it is featherbedding and protecting your job, then that is what is achieved. Read Thomas Friedman's book The World is Flat to find out the price of the demise of the education system and parental (and even governmental, which is really our own) responsibility in the US. There are Indian and Chinese children whose achievements far exceed most of our children's. A lot of Indian and Chinese children. A whole lot of them. Many of them are being educated at our elite universities and institutions, and going back home (though most of them would like to stay and enjoy the business potential of our society but we lump them in with the hordes of uneducated people coming across the southern border). While I do not agree with some of what he says in his book, he is a very smart guy and has a lot of interesting ideas that will make YOU think. Read that now (it's an easy read) while listening to the presidential rhetoric, and decide whether you want Change You Can Count On, 35 Years Of Advocating For Change, I Am Going To Change Washington, or The Change You Want, and see how much change you can spare for the next generation that will kick our collective asses unless we all get our act together pretty fast. Think about which one might kick some ass now rather than triangulating to make fat ones fatter. The sad thing is we have no one to blame but ourselves and our prosperous laziness (where poor people are fat and rich people are skinny -- huh? ya think the third world might be wanting some of that?) that has allowed us to focus on second and third-order issues instead of the ones that will really matter. The 200D is NOT a 123. It is a 110. The Hydropneumatic compensator was first used in the 112 300SE, then made it into some 111s. The diff in a 110 is the same. It would fit in my 200D, IF I had ever found one.We are talking 60-68 here, not 80s. Airbags are NOT air shocks. Re: [MBZ] Vacuum elements in a 85 300SD (126 chassis) - any oneelse been here ???
You need to remove the center dash vent and pull the duct off behind it. If it's like the W124, the wheel that operates the damper inside is held in place with an allen head screw, accessable from the passenger compartment through the louvers. The vent itself is probably held in with spring clips or by a screw on the side visible when you open the glove box. The vacuum servo is the INSIDE the air box. Re: [MBZ] W108 hydropneumatic compensator - useless trivia
call Airlift in Detriot and order the airbags then. Same ones that fit the 110 should work in the 123. It is not a big deal. If not, Airlift can tell you what works. Or you can measure the ID of the springs and you need a bag 6-8 long. Drill a hole at the spring center of the Lower control arm on each side for the air hose.
