I get about 23 in mixed use (probably about 60% highway, 40% city

I believe the M104's in the 1993 and up do a little better mileage
wise than the M103 models.

my understanding is that social security is not run though in any
meaningful way. the money is taken by force and then spent by the
government on unrelated projects. then you eventually get back far far less
than you would had you invested it in any other program and eat cat food
while fighting not to be dispossessed.

I can't provide you with a car fax, but I can tell you these are great
cars. They have the 3800 engine (which is the best engine GM ever made).
Lots of power for a large car, and VERY good fuel economy. When I had my
Olds 88, it could get over 30 mpg. I think in 94 they were slightly
larger than the earlier models, so you can probably get 28-30.

You will have to replace the alternator about every 50,000 miles and the
water pump every 60-75,000. You should service the transmission every
50,000 miles. But, other than that it will be a great car.

The alternator and water pump are easy repairs (if I can do them, then
they can't be too hard)

Wow, Fibre Channel is still around? Last I heard about it was at a place I
used to work where some engineers were involved in a top-secret project to
build some kind of FC switch with an embedded TCP stack and web server for
remote administration---a big deal in the late '90s! The company closed its
doors a few years later, so I figure my NDA has long since expired. I'm out
of the loop now on SAN stuff, but since this was about 10 years ago, I would
have assumed the technology had been replaced by something newer, faster,
etc.

Yeah, I think you are OK there. Like Ethernet, as long as you have physical
plug-to-socket compatibility, everything works but the speed is limited to
the lowest common denominator of the hardware.

I suspect counseling and drugs are cheaper than a jail cell even with
 housing and food subsidies.

And a jail cell certainly isn't going to solve the actual problem!
Counseling and drugs might cost more up front, but they can be offset by
the person hopefully becoming a productive member of society.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Audi S4

2008-01-09 Thread David Bruckmann
Frequent issues are:

-crumbling suspension rubber, especially in the back, will cause extremely
squirrelly handling (just like a W201/W124 when the rubber wears out)

-N75 boost control valve failure

-wiring, wiring, wiring. Relays are located, among other places, in driver's
kickplate area, which can get wet if the windshield has been badly
replaced/sealed, or if there's a lot of condensation

-rubber intake plumbing gets brittle and breaks, causing air metering issues,
boost cutoff, and stalling.

-the medusa-like coolant hose with the integrated Y-junction tends to fail. It
is expensive.

-check for a recall on fuel lines to/from inline filter (they run near the
turbo, and I guess there have been a few flamethrowers as a result)

-heater fan motor bearings and brushes

-climate control def/foot flap motor failure can be a pain because of the
labour required to get to it

-trim strips on body tend to corrode and eject themselves

On the other hand:

The people who have this car are obsessed with it. It is VERY fast, solid, and
retains the quirkiness of the 5 cylinder engine with modern updates (eg. LH-
instead of KE-jetronic fuel injection)

[MBZ] W108 hydropneumatic compensator - useless trivia

2008-01-09 Thread David Bruckmann
Perusal of the service manuals reveals that, when new, the compensator carries
a 75 bar nitrogen charge. This further supports my theory that these devices
fail because the gas leaks out and causes consequential damage.

Does anyone have one of these lying around so you can take some pictures of the
outside surfaces. I'm sure there's a charging port/screw somewhere on the body.

I think the better approach would be to pass a law prohibiting children
from touching weapons unless an adult is around to supervise. That
would fix the problem right there.

Reminds me of the Token Ring days.
Using a switching infrastructure removes the collision delays of
Ethernet. If it's that critical, bump it up to Gigabit or 10Gb and the
benefits of Fibre disappear.
Plus, most of the 4Gb Fibre vendors are running iFCP so packets go
through the TCP stack anyway.

[MBZ] 123 coupe electrical confusion

2008-01-09 Thread Glenn Brown
I agree with Jim Cathey, as I recently performed the aluminum foil treatment
of the light piping channels for the instrument cluster suggested by Craig
McCluckey and my dash lights are indeed bright enough to dim approximately
1/3 of the way and are still brighter than they were prior to the aluminum
foil treatment.
On another subject, my turn signals and 4way flahers were behaving really
weird and Jim C. suggested off-list that this could be caused by dirty
contacts in the 4way flasher switch. Well, success, success, I removed the
4way flasher switch, opened it up and the contacts were rather ugly looking,
so I cleaned 'em with a Scotch-Brite, applied a small amount of conductive
grease to all the contacts as well as the connecting pins, and reassembled
the switch and all is working correctly again.
Thanx Jim.

[MBZ] Vacuum elements in a 85 300SD (126 chassis ) - any one else been here ???

2008-01-09 Thread George Larribeau
Trying to remove Vacuum element for Center Nozzle

I know it leaks, I have a hand vacuum pump and a gauge.

(so do a few others but this one is being the most difficult to get to.

I have the center console removed (what a mess)

Instruction 83-665

Refers to removing shutter center and loosen air connection hose to necessary
extent in 83-150.

Now 83-150 has me totally confused.

83-150 covers RR Venetian blind and RR of frame.

Which is it?

What is shutter center referred to in the instruction 83-665 (vacuum
elements, where I started)

Got a bit lost.

used to work where some engineers were involved in a top-secret

 closed its
doors a few years later, so I figure my NDA has long since
 expired. I'm out
of the loop now on SAN stuff, but since this was about 10 years
 ago, I would
have assumed the technology had been replaced by something newer,
 faster,
 etc.

Yeah, I think you are OK there. Like Ethernet, as long as you have
 physical
plug-to-socket compatibility, everything works but the speed is
 limited to
the lowest common denominator of the hardware.

Re: [MBZ] OT:Education

2008-01-09 Thread Rich Thomas
A buddy of mine works in a corporate capacity for an extremely
successful charter school (operated under the public school system)
operator that takes children who come from the lowest performing public
schools in the worst neighborhoods -- they are not skimming high
achievers or privileged kids, quite the opposite. He says there is no
mystery to their success (90% graduation, a large fraction of that goes
on to college), they just execute well against their well-publicized
plan and objectives . One of the main points he made was that if their
teachers are not performing (against well-known criteria that they
commit to when they sign on) they get 2 counseling sessions then they
are gone if they need a 3rd. No teachers union BS. It works extremely
well -- the teachers they have are high-performing, love their jobs, and
are 110% committed to their children. He points that out as one of the
key differences between their org and the public school organization.
(Their overhead is also minimal, and it is run like a good lean
corporation with excellent committed people.) There are some
children/families who cannot succeed no matter what, these are the
unfortunate few that they have to let go despite their best efforts to
help them succeed.

There is no mystery to educating children, either in the public or
private sector, if educating children is the main objective. He can
tell some amazing stories about having to deal with the school district
admin org (huge and dysfunctional with VERY highly-paid people, many of
whom are at best marginally competent) when trying to spend money well
(they get a fixed per-student payment, same as the public schools, their
allocations are different). They also have significant expansion plans,
but as you can imagine run up against strong entrenched interests that
impedes their planned future successes. He quit a successful career in
the tech sector to go back to school for a grad education degree (at a
very prestigiou$ university), after an MBA some years ago, paid his own
freight, and took a large pay cut to give back to society. He is
quite conservative, but also extremely progressive!

Oh man I did one of those in the 123, I am guessing it is generally a
similar PITA. I can't help you specifically on the 126, but what I did
was study the pics well (such as it was with the CD manual) and get all
that in my head so what I felt with my finger(s) could be translated
against what I saw. Being blind could probably help in this case, what
with enhanced fingers sensing being your mechanism for seeing. As I
recall I could sorta see the element but not at the same time as
contorting myself to touch it with one hand/ finger or get a wrench on
the bolts, so it was mostly all by feel.

Ah feel yer payane!

While we are talking M1, a fella on the OZBENZ site posted a PDF of an

To cut a long story short M1 did not do that well, especially when

Take a look at - at some of the problems outlined at
 http://www.city-journal.org/html/7_2_how_teachers.html
The current contract between the Board of Education and the UFT can best
be described as a we-don't-do-windows document. Among the tasks that
principals are forbidden to require of teachers under the contract:
attending more than one staff meeting per month after school hours,
 walking
the children to a school bus, patrolling the hallways or the lunchroom or
the schoolyard, covering an extra class in an emergency, attending a
lunchtime staff meeting, or coming in a few days prior to the opening of
school each September to do some planning.

And disciplinary action - what a joke

The contract makes it almost insurmountably difficult for a principal
 even
to begin the process of charging a teacher with incompetence under the
union-written state education law. Every time the principal wants to
 record
a negative evaluation in the teacher's personnel file, the teacher can
contest that single entry through three separate grievance procedures,
leading all the way up to the Board of Education. Even after the Board has
upheld the principal, the teacher, with the help of the union, can go to
arbitration to contest the single negative entry. The process is so
 tortuous
that most principals don't even bother trying; they accept it as a fact of
school life that a certain number of incompetent teachers must be carried
 on
 the payroll.

and He told me that in the case of one totally dysfunctional teacher, he
has spent close to 100 hours out of the building over the past two years
 in
grievance sessions at the district office, at the Board of Education, and
 at
arbitration sessions. Although every one of his negative evaluations has
eventually been upheld, he still must go through the process for another
year before this one employee might have to face formal disciplinary
charges-a process that could take several more years

The above is from just one of many articles about the power abuses of
 *our*
public education system. It's truely an embarassment to see what this
 has
done to countless students. Hopefully public outrage will force Germany
 to
change its laws about home schooling at some point.

Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT:Education

He is
quite conservative, but also extremely progressive!

yeah, i did the whole school thing too and what a total waste of time it
was. a friend of mine dropped out when he was 16 and took his GED and just
went to college. I tried the same thing and my confused euro immigrant dad

i've been looking at the courses at area colleges and many of them are on
the 5th or 6th grade level anyway. do you know that you can take pre

it is also interesting that homeschool students have relatively stringent
requirements to enter open enrollment state schools while regular students
are largely open enrollment.

I cannot, however, find information on how to enroll a 10 year old.

Well community colleges are for the community. I can't really fault
them for offering remedial courses for those who finally wake up and
realize they want to learn something.

Though likely you'd do just as well checking out a textbook at the
library and working through it on your own. If you have the self-

Probably the knob.

Re: [MBZ] OT:Education

2008-01-09 Thread Rich Thomas
Part of their deal is that parent(s) have some degree of participation
too, whether single, multiple, various combinations of mommies/daddies,
whatever. That is one element of success. Another is discipline --
peer, school, and self-imposed in a positive way. Kids learn to learn
and behave and succeed and derive satisfaction and pride in that.

There is no mystery to successfully educating (not teaching), if that is
what the purpose is. If it is featherbedding and protecting your job,
then that is what is achieved.

Read Thomas Friedman's book The World is Flat to find out the price of
the demise of the education system and parental (and even
governmental, which is really our own) responsibility in the US. There
are Indian and Chinese children whose achievements far exceed most of
our children's. A lot of Indian and Chinese children. A whole lot of
them. Many of them are being educated at our elite universities and
institutions, and going back home (though most of them would like to
stay and enjoy the business potential of our society but we lump them in
with the hordes of uneducated people coming across the southern
border). While I do not agree with some of what he says in his book, he
is a very smart guy and has a lot of interesting ideas that will make
YOU think.

Read that now (it's an easy read) while listening to the presidential
rhetoric, and decide whether you want Change You Can Count On, 35 Years
Of Advocating For Change, I Am Going To Change Washington, or The Change
You Want, and see how much change you can spare for the next generation
that will kick our collective asses unless we all get our act together
pretty fast. Think about which one might kick some ass now rather than
triangulating to make fat ones fatter. The sad thing is we have no one
to blame but ourselves and our prosperous laziness (where poor people
are fat and rich people are skinny -- huh? ya think the third world
might be wanting some of that?) that has allowed us to focus on second
and third-order issues instead of the ones that will really matter.

Y'all (mostly) are a pretty smart bunch, or you wouldn't be driving fine
automobiles.

--R (who can next expound on the state of biomedical research in our
country, and who is doing most of it, and where they will all be going
after they finish those stints, and then what they will do)

Hi Everyone,

Quick question, mobil 1 ATF synth is the right fluid for '88 300E with Auto

Absolutely, I use it in all my cars, including the 5 speed auto in my
ML320, which calls for the factory synthetic, whatever that is..

Now 83-150 has me totally confused.
83-150 covers RR Venetian blind and RR of frame.
 Which is it?

The 'blinds' are those little louvers in the air vents.

What is shutter center referred to in the instruction 83-665 (vacuum
 elements, where I started)

You need to remove the center dash vent and pull the duct off behind
it. If it's like the W124, the wheel that operates the damper inside
is held in place with an allen head screw, accessable from the
passenger compartment through the louvers. The vent itself is
probably held in with spring clips or by a screw on the side visible
when you open the glove box.

The vacuum servo is the INSIDE the air box.

I wasn't implying that a 220D was a W123, though it may have
sounded like it.

I was _complaining_ 'cause I want air bags but I have W123s.

call Airlift in Detriot and order the airbags then. Same ones that
fit the 110 should work in the 123. It is not a big deal. If not,
Airlift can tell you what works. Or you can measure the ID of the
springs and you need a bag 6-8 long. Drill a hole at the spring
center of the Lower control arm on each side for the air hose.
