2009-01-07 Thread Kevin Kraly

All you are doing is hooking the end of the cable over a little rod thing.

Do you have to put it in the hole, catch the rod by feel and then tug on it
to make sure it's in place before locking it in on top? I think this would
definitely be a job worth doing on my W126 to put it right. It's had shift
timing problems since I bought it.

http://technorati.com/posts/NBMPEEukX%2BFGiVkxhFAj7r%2BYWjEmOFqedKUdUAW9s%2BE%3D
Robert Maddox is a builder and seller of real pulse jet engines with powers
up to 1000 pounds... and if that's not a cool enough hobby, he's also bolted
one to a bicycle. The 50-ish pounds of thrust developed by the engine could
push the bike up to 75 MPH, which would be a real bone-shaker of a ride. And
a deafening one too: the pulse jet engine makes a frightening racket, and
its humming sound earned the 2nd World War cruise-missile V1s which used
similar engines the nicknames buzzbomb and doodlebug. You can hear and see
the results of this DIY craziness in the video.

..
During WW-2 a kid in my 3000 population home town bought two of the little
"buzzbomb" engines designed to be built into model airplanes and fastened
them to his bike. Getting up enough bike speed to start the engines was the
big problem but once started, they would wake up every dog in town and you
could hear them running a mile away. He said he had to turn off the fuel
supply to stop because the old fashioned "coaster brake" on his bike
wouldn't do it with the engines running.

The visibility I find fine in driving, but I am tall and I think the narrow
windows probably work better for me than a shorter person. Parking lots at
night and/or in rain or snow mean you drive it like a van when backing up -
use the (excellent) mirrors as well as looking behind. The mirrors are the
best of any car I have ever driven, obviously developed to balance off the
narrow windows.

I really, really liked the Forester and came within a hair of buying one. I
was actually on the way to drive another one when I decided to visit a
dealer with a pile of ex-lease Chryslers on his lot for cheap. That was
that.

For a 2005 American car my Mag is in incredible shape. Would pass for brand
new to most people. Either Chrysler has improved its interior materials
vastly, or Chrysler corporate leasing spends major dollars on refurbishing
its returns before cycling them through the auction. The leather seats are
unmarked and uncreased, everything looks and works as new save a few
scratches on the chrome surround of the gear selector. Even the cargo area
is pristine.

Well stated and I agree completely. Another reason is that certain items just
aren't worth doing if it's going to turn into an ordeal.

When I had my 300D, I changed the trans fluid once which was quite enough.
Red fluid on me, on my clothes and the driveway with the car up on stands which
of course meant dragging the jack out and lifting both sides first. And then
there was the one time I changed the fuel filter on one of the 190Es. The
damned thing is located, with the pump, under a panel forward of the LR wheel.
Multiple wrenches required plus pinching off the lines (almost, as it turned
out)
and then trying to avoid the gas running down my arms.

I vowed after those two projects that somebody else would be taking care of
them in the future. I've had a bit of experience disassembling entire cars for
restoration and putting them back together 4-5 years later but some stuff I
just won't do anymore.

Snook is right.

Re: [MBZ] So I end up buying a 2005 Dodge Magnum

2009-01-07 Thread Gary Hurst
back in the day, i was a strong believer in "you gotta fix your own car."
after many many minor injuries and many broken parts (including setting a
buick on fire), i concluded that i'm just too old for this shit and started
paying people to do it for me.

i used to also believe in being my own electrician, plumber, heating/ac guy,
etc. i would spend days sorting out the problem, hurting myself and
breaking things all throughout the process. and then after investing 30 or
so hours of labor and half fixing the problem, I proudly proclaimed myself
the manly man.

nowadays, i call "big john" from irish electric. he is a master
electrician, both in fact and certification. "big john" figures out and
repairs in 15 minutes what took me 30 hours, does it better than i did it
and doesn't break anything.

do i today feel less manly? sure. do i today feel more practical and
intelligent? absolutely!

I have to agree with snook here. in the end, if you can fix your car and
enjoy doing it and it doesn't hurt you too badly and you don't spend
important time on it you should be spending on other things, then more power
to you as you are the manly man! if, however, you can't meet the above
criteria it might just make more sense to hire someone to do it for you and

Re: [MBZ] Curt's 190D Wiper

2009-01-07 Thread OK Don
We did a CLA on my son's -87 300D - read the same instruactions about
some clips to remove the cover, that weren't there. We ended up taking
the whole wiper assembly, motor and all out of the car. Turn it over,
and you can get to the many screws that hold the cover on. Take the
cover off, and you can easily clean out all the old, hard grease,
replace with nice new grease, re-assemble, find that the wiper is off
15 or 20 degrees, hitting one side of the windshield frame, take it
out again, get it right the third time or so. You get pretty good at
removing the assembly by the time you're done.
MARK the position of the parts on the shafts BEFORE removing them!

I take no offense to the statement. Simple economics, if you earn more than
it cost to pay someone to do a job you're not interested in doing, why not?
If you like to tinker, and enjoy changing oil, as many of us do, that's a
different story. If you're not all that interesting in changing oil, and
you're giving up an hours worth of work at $200 to mess about and save $20,
it becomes a bit of a false economy.

There's a difference between a hobby and chore. Hard to put a monetary
value on a hobby, but it's easy to put one on a chore.

No issue but a strange oil filter error that a fresh filter solved. I

I have had the transmission filter replaced which also solved the pan
leak (new gasket) but that falls under normal care. Fresh plugs, and
injectors after 50k on the clock. Then I had the O2 error, which is
fixed by replacing them. Nothing else has happened. Kid barfs and
barfs in it, so it stinks, but that is not mechanical, except for the
kid.

It is standard 4 banger without SC, which was only an option after
1993. I do not notice much lag or resistance, though mileage is at
best 22 highway. Has the towing package, so stays within temp up
grades and is able to haul loads to the dump just fine.

Good to know, Clay. My P.O. shows highway mileage maximum of 25+ mpg
or so, average highway more like 22-23, so my guess is the AWD does
make a bit of difference that way, but not much. Mine does not have a
tow package, so I'll need to add a trans cooler and a trans fluid temp
gauge before I do any serious towing. He just changed the oil, but
from next change on it gets M1. Good to know about the filter error,
I'll keep a spare filter and an oil change kit aboard for the first
couple long trips after the M1 goes in, just in case.

I kinda wondered how VW would fare with these at a "VW premium" pricepoint

Done already I'm afraid. Had the wiper off this summer when the windshield was

Lubricate the sliding pin on the wiper arm with some nice synthetic
grease.  Works wonders.

You don't need to remove anything, but do put a towel under the arm
-- switch on the wiper and then turn the ignition off.  Manually move
the wiper to the most extended position, then wipe a small amount of
synthetic grease on the pin with your finger.  Don't get any on the
windshield, of course.  Doesn't take much, and this usually does all
the free-ing up you need.

If, however, the wiper has been dragging for a long time, the motor
is probably overheated and the gears are worn, alas.

Good rundown on what's out there.  We went through a similar search last
year.  SWMBO insisted on a wagon but didn't like the looks of the Magnum so
I never drove it. How do you find visibility (CU criticized it)?  We
eventually went with the Outback but it IS cramped, at least compared to the
Sable wagon it replaced (but we are smallish).  Only scheduled MX to date.
MPG (25.? actual) probably suffers from AWD.  Visibility out the back is
poor, my main complaint.

Well worth watching & checking the links on the

Please take the time after the show and look around check

This is a tribute to the Gray Eagles (WWII pilots) was in
conjunction with an air show in Ohio called "The Final Roundup."
Which was the last large gathering of the remaining P-51 Mustang
fighters used during WWII. There were about 120 of the
fighters there all of them in flying condition, of course. The flyover seen
at
the end of the video is composed entirely of P51s spelling out the number
51..

It was an event that may never be seen again.

Re: [MBZ] O/T BAck up Harddrive

2009-01-07 Thread Loren Faeth
If you choose to backup all, it does. You can choose to backup
whatever you want backed up. in general, you are wasting space to
back up the OS and software. You want to back up your files and
folders and the system state.

When your HD bombs, you put in a new one, install the os, then
restore from BU. It puts everything back where it was. If you back
up the OS, and then restore that, you will have problems unless you
replace the HD with the exact same size/model. Besides, you want
to always start with a clean install.

I prefer to put the OS and software on C:\ and put all data on
d:\ That way I back up D: and System state and I am done. I do it
the same on all computers. At times, you can reinstall the OS on C:
and not bother the data on D: It DOES NOT work if you have converted
your HD from a basic disk to a dynamic disk. The only way to restore
a dynamic disk is to wipe the entire physical drive. The safest way
is to install a PCI drive controller card and a second HD for your
data. That way, if the problem wipes out the HD controller,
generally all drives have to be wiped. With the second controller,
you might loose your OS or your Data but not both. But, I never do
that. Sometimes I use 2 drives and sometimes only one with 2
partitions. But I have never had the luxury of a second drive
controller. (except in some servers built with IDE OS drives and SCSI
data drives.)

with that, you can schedule it to backup every night while you
sleep, or once a week or whatever you want. DO back up "system
state" as that will help to recover if you have a hard drive failure.
Most USB drives also come with some form of backup software. I
prefer to let the builtin backup do the work, as it stays the same
regardless of what/where i backup to.

Re: [MBZ] PREVIA AWD

2009-01-07 Thread Redghost
When I got the van it has 101k on the clock already. New tires and
fresh filters before I took it for a two week road trip through CA.
No issue but a strange oil filter error that a fresh filter solved. I
think all the crap was dislodged when I put M1 in.

I replaced the powersupply in my main PC yesterday as it was making noise when
I powered the system up.

Turns out the noise (which sounds for the whole world like a bad fan bearing)
is from the cdrom drive... Fortunately I have a spare.

The replaced power supply can go back to the machine it came from. This machine
had one fail some time ago, I pulled the PS out of the other machine for this
one.

The cable connects inside the tranny. You have to drop the pan to connect
the tranny end.

By the way, this brings up another issue with living with older MBs as daily
transport. The first cable the shop got was the wrong one.

This happened over and over and over to me with this w126. They ask for the
VIN and I still got the wrong parts over and over.

Also just as a point of interest, WorldPac has delisted (or are showing
permanent backorder on) a LOT of parts in Canada that are still available
stateside. So I was running into problems in that department too.

For example, I had to buy my rear subframe bushings off eBay. Or pay almost
$400 at the local dealer.

2009-01-07 Thread Peter Frederick
Lubricate the sliding pin on the wiper arm with some nice synthetic
grease. Works wonders.

You don't need to remove anything, but do put a towel under the arm
-- switch on the wiper and then turn the ignition off. Manually move
the wiper to the most extended position, then wipe a small amount of
synthetic grease on the pin with your finger. Don't get any on the
windshield, of course. Doesn't take much, and this usually does all
the free-ing up you need.

If, however, the wiper has been dragging for a long time, the motor
is probably overheated and the gears are worn, alas.

It's definitely a maintenance job that needs to be done now and then,
even if the factory didn't anticipate it. I was really disappointed
with the sluggish action of my '87s monowiper during consistently
below-freezing weather the past few weeks here in Oregon---I imagine
the old grease in there must be congealing like bacon fat in the

As with many things, some kind of synthetic lubricant with a flatter
viscosity-temperature curve would be a definite improvement.

Ford Ranger (what I set out to buy): not enough headroom, BUMMER
Subaru Forester: pricey for what you get, slightly cramped for me
Subaru Outback: nice once I folded myself in two to get into it
Volkswagen Passat: put me to sleep in 5 minutes
Scion Van: kewl but unbearably cheap inside and you can hear every
suspension movement every moment you drive
Mazda 5: too cramped
Volvo xc70: WOW best seats of any car anywhere, decent handling, scary
repair stories so I ran away
300e: they are all scary movie time up here now, no decent ones left
300td: only decent one I have seen for months blew up (no joke) the day
before I was to go see it
Nissan Rogue: too cramped, nice package tho
Dodge Caliber: Drove it as a rental for 3 weeks while I shopped. CVT sounds
like a roto rooter half the time. Huge inside but I got tired of banging my
head every time I got in, really quick.

You can start the flames now ;).

Most Oz MB's are tex or leather, then along came the peasant mobile

it spread across to the 124.
I have nothing much against fabric interiors, specially on a hot day but

OH YEAH. VW still seems to do it as a regular biz practice.

The Europeans really, really need to get their automotive act together soon
or they will lose what they still have of the north american market.

They make the best driving cars, but the headaches over the longer term just
aren't worth it.

To me, ownership of any post-w124 Benz as a used vehicle (not under a

It seems to have escaped your notice that the newest MBs use half the fuel

believe are manufactured from resources.

Now, if I lived in a hut out in the veldt someplace, I would want a basic

Yup, CO2 labels seem to be stuck everywhere, from car ads in the UK to the
back of cig packs.

I'm still not sure what CO2 is, but everyone keeps telling me I make it,
it's bad for me and the planet, and I should stop. I was then told, I could
buy a carbon credit, and my soul would be saved.

I don't know, I think everyone is wising up to the whole idea of buying

I concur. But carbon emissions in cars is becoming an issue with the
politicians. If you read most any car ad in a UK magazine, CO2 numbers are more
prominent than gas mileage because there is now a tax on it. Even Porsche has
just
announced that future engines will have greatly reduced CO2 output.

My new copy of Auto motor und Sport has a two page spread advertising the new
Audi Q5 and down at the bottom with the fuel economy numbers (3.0 diesel) it
says "Emission in g/km combined 175-199. Reading further, It reads "has the

I think that term has some effect on those who have never really been exposed
to the not-so-hot German engineering because I have spent good money on a
good bit of it, hidden in a Mercedes body.

In the olden days, German engineering could take the well earned credit for
the ME-262, the Bf109e, the V-1, the SSK and SSKL, the Porsche 356 and plenty
of other like examples. Problem is, a lot of their ideas were at the other end
of the scale, and the customers paid the price. A policy I have referred to as
"The Customer-Financed Field Testing Program".

Since when did the Pacifica have a box frame like the M did? No, it
was based purely on the Chrysler mini-van unibody construction.

Only shared designs were the Chysleler/Dodge sedans based on the old

cylinder tractor engine.

I've got some old Craftsman jack stands that my dad gave me , the type with
the pin that can be put into different holes for height adjustment. He's
got some 15 year old cheapies, the type that you lift up and they lock in

a lot easier to put into place under the car since you just lift them up

It seems to have escaped your notice that the newest MBs use half the fuel
the older ones did and require far fewer component replacements which I do
believe are manufactured from resources.

Now, if I lived in a hut out in the veldt someplace, I would want a basic
vehicle that I might be able revive on my own.

Probably a Land Cruiser.

Re: [MBZ] Snow Tires was Re: So I end up buying a 2005 Dodge Magnum

2009-01-07 Thread Kevin
The problem I had in that regard was finding a set that was both decent off
road AND was not load range C. Lots of 1/2 ton sport utilities use that tire
size.

My 05 dodge has load range E BFG All terrain KOs in that size, but even though
they have the snowflake rating, they're a bit hard for a place that sees a lot
of snow and ice. When I looked (a year and a half ago, I think), there were
exactly six load range E tires that size, and the BFG was the only one
that was both all terrain and not complete garbage. Hopefully you'll have
better luck.

Well I guess if you got to pay somebody to replace a shift cable on a
126 you probably should not own one.

The adjuster is broken on mine. The piece on the housing that threads in is
broken off, but there are threads further up. I was going to try to fix it
or modify it to make it work properly. The cable itself is fine. What is
involved in changing the cable?

That's what's going on with the '07 Dodge Ram. Anyone have any

Re: [MBZ] So I end up buying a 2005 Dodge Magnum

2009-01-07 Thread R A Bennell
I have several chunks of large square timber - 12X12 by 16 to 24 inches that I
keep in the garage and tuck under
the vehicle too along with the jack stands as a bit of a safety cushion if
things go bad.

One nice thing about 4X4 pickup trucks. Often sufficient room to crawl under
and do things without jacking it up.

Other things can happen too. I think I reported this incident on here a while
back. I was replacing the clutch in
our old 4Runner and went home one afternoon to work on it. No one else home. I
was putting stuff back together and
reached my arm up in over the tranny against the bottom of the cab floor. I got
my hand stuck and could not get it
back out. Had a bit of a panic attack as I wondered how in the heck I was going
to get back out of there. I did not
relish the idea of laying under the darned thing while my good wife loosened
the tranny cross member to lower it a
bit. That sounded risky to me. I sort of like being round rather than flat.

In any event, I soon decided that if I got my hand in there, I should be able
to get it out and so I wiggled it
around and tried different approaches until I did get loose.

This is pretty interesting. It is a diesel. It is part Cadillac, part Truck,

Me too. I have some expensive but excellent quality USA-made
jackstands that are a very different design from the generic Chinese
ones, and seem much stronger. I bought them a few years ago from a
guy in New Jersey who sells primarily German tools and hop-up parts
for BMWs through his web site. Anybody know who I am talking about?
I can't find the site now.

There are a lot of these vids on youtube. Many use Garret turbos. This would
make a great science project provided there is plenty of adult

Well, in my opinion, I am glad you don't get to make the rules. Otherwise, I
would certainly not meet your requirements. I only do the work on my cars that
I want to do - otherwise, I pay someone with the skills, training and tools to
do the work. An oil change is the perfect example of this. I can change the
oil on my car, but why should I unless I really want to. By the time, I buy
the oil and the filter, I have spent almost as much as the oil change costs and
because I don't have a lift, it is much more difficult to do the oil change. I
guess that makes me lazy (or smart). My time is worth a whole lot more than
the $20 I would save in changing it myself. I do some things on my cars -
change spark plugs, belts, and sometimes I even replace a water pump or an
alternator. But, I do that because I enjoy doing it. I like the feeling of
accomplishment when I am done. I can also pay the guy at the car wash to wash
my car or a detail shop to wax it. But, I am picky when it comes to that and,
again, I enjoy doing the work. Based on the value of time, I should probably
pay the neighbor kid to mow my lawn, but I can use the exercise and I think I
do a better job.

By the way, ALL mechanical goods will reach a point where it makes more sense
to replace them, instead of to keep repairing them. Anything with moving parts
will eventually wear out.

Re: [MBZ] So I end up buying a 2005 Dodge Magnum

2009-01-07 Thread R A Bennell
I have been lucky with mine I guess. I got my 76 115 300D about 4 summers back
and have done almost nothing but
change the oil so far. I have collected some bits and pieces to do some work
but have yet to do it. I really want
to check the valve adjustment and I need to recharge the AC but other than that
it needs mostly finicky stuff. The
door locks are a bit intermittent. I took the radio (aftermarket) out and have
the hole in the dash to look at. A
new one on the shelf that I have yet to install.

Of course, in the time I have had it, I think I have only driven it something
like 8K miles so not exactly taxing
it either. Runs better now than when I got it. Italian tuneups work.

This is exactly why I moved away from old MBs.  I have neither the time nor
inclination (any more) to be spending a
portion of my weekend or evenings to work on a car, even though I have a place
to do it.

The day will come when I have the time and resources to tinker again, and when
that day comes, I'll find a nice
older MB to do it with.  Until then, it's strictly utilitarian stuff - get in,
turn the key and go.

Older MB's are obiously a hobby as much as a driver. Same would apply to an
older Chevy when it comes right down to
it.

Sometimes, people just get tired of the ongoing hassle of repairs and
maintenance and want a new vehicle that will
likely have no issues for a good while. Even a 5 year old north american
vehicle is likely to have a lot less
troubles than a 25 year old Mercedes. Even if the Mercedes was a top of the
line expensive vehicle and has service
records to show it was properly cared for.

It is easy to just buy or lease something new, drive it for a couple of years
and then do it again.  Much more
difficult to keep an old car going forward, especially if you care about the
old car and want it to last.

You talking about the control pressure cable? If so, that is about a 10
minute job max. That is crazy money.

Yeah, well in my case there is a slight problem in that I am phobic about
being under a car that is off the ground. If I can crawl underneath and work
with the car sitting on its tires that is ok, but jackstands forget it. I
don't even like going underneath a car on the hoist in my buddy's shop. I
may try again this summer using Rhino-ramps, for some reason seeing
something solid looks ok to me (as opposed to the steel-frame ramps I have

so to begin with I'm stuck using shops for at least five months a year, best

$440 for a shift cable replacement is not paying someone to do something
properly, it's flat out robbery. I almost fell on my butt when he handed me
the bill. This shop used to hire ex-dealer mechanics, which I understand
