We're showing 9 degrees a few miles down the road from you. When I lived in
Western NY that was relatively warm for
this time of year, but after almost 12 years down South, this is, as you say,
damn cold!

I have a 500 already, really need that faster bus and large drive
capability.

Color classic is $150, complete, last week when I was there.  Kicking
myself, because I was picking them up at the Goodwill for $10 a decade
ago and thinking I was hot stuff selling on eBay for $75.

Re: [MBZ] Low temp starting

2009-01-16 Thread Curt Raymond
Hi Dimitri,

Boston, I didn't know you were in Boston, are you always in Boston?

It has been cold but I don't want to hear bitterly from Boston... I work in
Tewksbury but live about 50 miles west, its always ~10 degrees warmer in Tewks
than at home and the radio says its warmer in Boston still...

My cars get a bottle of Diesel Kleen every fall to clean out any water and help
prevent gelling. When I first got my 190D it would start and run but wouldn't
make any power. I let it idle for an hour and then it was fine... I went
directly to a gas station and left the car running while I fueled up, then went
to Autozone and again left it running while I got a can of Diesel Suppliment
(which is supposed to have better anti-gel properties) and put in the whole can
(supposed to treat 250 gallons) never had an issue again.

Well,
I had similar problem this am with a 240D which I just bought.? I don't
know the car yet so I'm not sure how low the fuel gauge will go before
the tank is empty and I don't even know if the yellow reserve fuel
light works.? Well, it was a bitter cold morning here in Boston and the
car started just fine.? After a couple of minutes it lost power and
stalled on a highway entrance ramp.? THe gauge read low but not
completely empty so I suspected gelled fuel.? The highway authority
forced me to have the car towed free of charge to the next exit for
safety reasons.? There MB roadside assistance came and poured in a
couple of gallons of diesel.? The car eventually started and ran.? I
then proceeded to the nearest gas station and filled up.? Then I went
to Autozone and bought some of that Diesel 911 and poured it into
tank.? Car was OK for the rest of the day.?? I'll see what happens
tomorrow am.

Curt, that 190D should have a fuel heater. Idling should feed enough warm fuel
back to the tank to warm things up nicely. I think it would be fun to get an
extra sensor for the outside temp display and set it up to switch between
outdoor temp and fuel tank temp.

[MBZ] a guy trys hard NOT to sell a car

2009-01-16 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Find a car I want to buy on craigslist. Its a long ways away, about 10
hours, but if its decent its worth it. Its got 1 crappy pic and very
little description. So I email the guy and ask him if he has any
additional pics he can email and if it leaks or burns anything. He
replies back saying it leaks and burns everything, its an old diesel.
No mention of pics. Ok, so I email him back and basically say, OK, no
pics, how is the body, interior etc, any rust issues? Coming a long way
and want to get more info before coming to get it. He replies back t
his morning that I should not bother coming to get it, he is sure he
will have it sold to somebody local pretty soon. WOW, Ok, that beats all
I have ever saw. Why do people list something then do not try very hard
at all to sell it?

Anyway, if somebody is near this car and wants to look at it for me and
possibly take it to their place till I can get there to get it let me
know. Or, if somebody else wants it I guess thats OK too, after all, I
am supposed to be on a buying freeze.

This workhorse gets 40 plus miles per gallon. It's well used (265,000+
miles) but starts every time and runs like a tank. The AC's on the blink
but the power sunroof works and power windows work. Has power locks,
leather seats, new Pioneer stereo/CD. Automatic. Good cheap
transportation -- on the highway it runs smooth and fast and sips at the
fuel. It's been in the family for a long time but it was time for
something newer. Look now it won't stay on market long.

It all depends on the provenance and the paperwork/photos. I am not a fan
of the 116 cars, as I find their interiors seem flimsy - thin leather and
wood, balky controls, etc. Also, they really do stink of old car smell after
10 yrs.

I have been out of town this week and have not caught up on my DVR of the
ongoing Barrett Jackson Auction. But, I did see a 1977 450SEL (NOT with the
6.9) WITH ONLY 77,000 MILES that belonged to Doris Day. It sold for only
$7,700. The announcers commented that they thought that was a steal for
 the
buyer. While it is certainly not a normal Barrett Jackson car, it was
interesting to see it. Nice car.

Chris

I purchased a video (VHS) Transmission Rebuild, Mercedes 722.315 Auto, by
D.T. Charnews, 2004.

Its yours (free) if you want it. The guy looks like he is working in his
basement and films bits and pieces as he goes through the rebuild. It would
have been real helpful to me, but of course I have to be led around by the
hand on most things.

Maybe someone else can chime in, I'm sure my lead for buying it came from
one of these lists.

Thanks
Harry

Re: [MBZ] TRAILER block heater for Chris

2009-01-16 Thread MG
Yeah that is the intended use. My Grandfather drove a standard 5 ton box
truck in Germany. He usually pulled a two axle trailer with the
steerable front axle. In some of the places he went, the only way to
easily get the trailer in was to hook it to the hitch on the front of
the truck. Backing up one of those trailers is a whole nuther level of
hard. I don't have any problems with regular trailers but I still
haven't gotten very good with the three axle front steering trailer that
I made. Gonna take a lot more practice there.

I think people use the front receiver mount because they find it easier
to maneuver a trailer driving forward
rather than trying to back up. I have never tried it myself and it does
not sound like it would be that much
better. I suppose it might give a tighter turning circle given the
front wheels of the vehicle would turn quicker
than the back end. Sort of the reverse of a boat which essentially
steers from the back rather than the front as
with a car.

Looked on CL in KC today for a trans tech advertising on the side - I found one

$350 SD), but it will be worth it.

Need to post some pics of that. Need to rearrange my garage into trans shop

BTW, I am looking for a used transmission table/transmission workbench. Search
ebay if you don't know what that is. If anyone has one for sale or sees one for

Curt, that 190D should have a fuel heater. Idling should feed enough warm fuel
back to the tank to warm things up nicely. I think it would be fun to get an
extra sensor for the outside temp display and set it up to switch between
outdoor temp and fuel tank temp.

any trans (various pics, etc). Will have my Bavarian friend Paul price all the
MB trans tools I need. Might be cheaper to buy them in Germany and ship them
here than buy them from an importer...should probably check ebay.de for
Getriebe Werkzeug Mercedes - transmission tool Mercedes. Need to get tranny
lube gel too - parts installation lubricant.

i also had gear when i lived cold climates. i had $200 long underwear and

temparatures and not being cold and they were wearing large winter coats and
freezing. i would tell them that it was all just a matter of getting used
to it but it was nothing other than the quality of the cold weather gear.

i would impress the russians when i was there by standing in ice water to
show them the resolve of the american. i had waterproof thermal boots.
they had boots that looked a little like mine, but where just junk. none of
the locals could beat me in a contest of ice water standing.

but as i now live in a climate where it is in the 50s on a typical winter
day, i don't have any gear at all so 20 degrees below freezing is just
killer for me now

I used to wear shorts and sandals at Michigan State unless I was leaving the
dorm, I was used to living in a 65 degree house in the winter. A friend and I
would go to the movies in a neighboring dorm dressed like that (the classrooms
we used for movie night got quite warm with a few hundred bodies in them).
So we'd be calmly walking along in shorts and sandals, sometimes it might be
0-10 degrees F on a clear night, and see what comments it would draw. Most
common was Where are you guys from, Alaska or something? I always let Stan
answer that one: Coastal Texas, actually. Sure, it was a bit nippy walking
around like that, but it was only a 100yd walk, as opposed to two hours in a
packed auditorium holding a winter coat in your lap.

I can't speak for Maine, but there are states out there that do not require a
title on vehicles older than a certain age.  When it's that old, all you need
is a bill of sale.

And there are always the folks in Alabama/Mississippi (wherever it is) that
will title the vehicle for you - that's what I had to do for the 1962 300SE.

MA for most of my adult life and never titled a vehicle in Maine.

That said I don't think thats true but my parents have had all new cars since
1984 so I don't have a frame of reference... You might try checking around

Is it true that Maine does not require a title on a car that is over 15
years old?  If so, what do they need to register it?  Just a bill of
sale?  Once you do that do they then give you a title and registration?

not everyone wants to make any effort to sell a car; some just want
someone to buy it without asking questions, and that's obviously not the

This workhorse gets 40 plus miles per gallon. It's well used (265,000+
miles) but starts every time and runs like a tank. The AC's on the
blink but the power sunroof works and power windows work. Has power
locks, leather seats, new Pioneer stereo/CD. Automatic. Good cheap
transportation -- on the highway it runs smooth and fast and sips at
the fuel. It's been in the family for a long time but it was time for
something newer. Look now it won't stay on market long.

dont forget all the special tools you will need

Not sure how many special tools you'll need- the only one I can remember is
a 3/4 drive 1 3/16 socket (12 point) that worked quite nicely on the output
shaft nut. Already had that, thanks to my Dad who used to use it on olde
Beetle rear hubs. Was the first time I'd used that, though!

You will need an assortment of internal/external ring pliers and an
assortment of pics (think dental instruments). Used some pipe fittings to
compress the ~ 16 springs that are part of the front pump. While this was
all on a 722.4xx box I don't think the .3xx is much different, other than in
how the governor locking mechanism works- a rotating paw in the .3xx, an
internal clip on the .4xx

There are special tools to establish proper gaps in each of the clutch
packs. The new friction discs are a set thickness but you set the exact gap
by replacing the steels- these are available in variable thicknesses. On
mine the B3 discs (reverse) were the most worn. In that set there was
perceptable wear in the steels- of the total increase in gap of the whole
set about 15% was due to wear of the steels. But since there was no
excessive discoloration of the steel I reused them. My thought was that OK
this time the tranny may only go another 200k instead of the 300k it went
the first time. And there was a differance- reverse took about a half
second to engage instead of being nearly instantaneous. But given that it
USED to take 3-5 seconds I was OK with that!

I wore the wrong neck warmer so there was one cold spot just under my chin.
With the correct one I have to keep my helmet open a little to cool off.

Re: [MBZ] transmission repair factory PDF

2009-01-16 Thread Christopher McCann
I've got almost all that already. There is a very nice spring compressor that
you can buy which looks really handy.

Yes, the 722.4 and .3 are very similar. They are covered in the same ASTG
rebuild manual that I bought...
http://www.atsg.biz/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?search=actioncategory=EIMPkeywords=allpricecode=passsubnum=

So, you obviously rebuilt a 722.4 - did you have any trans rebuilding
experience before you did it? Did you use a manual to guide you through? If so,
which one?

It's amazing that the clutch disks last as long as they do. Now that I have a
bit of a clue how the automatic trans works, I've changed my view on them a
bit. They don't really break at 200,000 miles the wear pieces just wear out.
Of course, the hard parts can break, but that is not usually the case, it seems.

hi Peter!

sounds great in theory, but i've found 4 cyls under the hood of too

i suppose they could have been swaps, but i can't imagine anyone
going to the trouble to make a swap that seems to be going in the wrong
direction. (i know of some turbo 617s that have been swapped in, and
that's much closer to my ideal vehicle.)

all 6 cylinder models, ranging from '97 to '00, with anywhere from

$7000-11,000, asking. One I'm looking at is from a small dealer, with
100,000 kms on it. It's an '00 and he's asking $10,500 with a one year,
12,000kms warranty included. Not sure what I'll offer yet, but it seems

As someone who almost went to grad school to study 20th-century
metaphysics and philosophy of mind, I can't let this go by without
comment. Tyler, you've already strayed in this discussion far out of
physics per se into philosophy of science, not that there's anything
wrong with that! However, the formalist point of view you're
advocating (that scientific theories do not describe real entities but
rather models consistent with repeatable observation) certainly cannot
be generalized in the way you just have without opening the door to an
awfully thorny can of metaphysical worms (mixed metaphor very much
intentional!). You're glossing over centuries of debate, going back
at least to the Enlightenment empiricists (Locke, Hume, Berkeley) in
the 17th century, through Wittgenstein in the mid-20th, and beyond.

I for one am not at all prepared to abandon wholesale the ontological
distinctions among reality, my perceptions of it, and my mental
constructs resulting therefrom; I find those distinctions useful,
congenial, and well-founded. Many of our perceptions do form patterns
to which it is convenient to give names; but let us not confuse the
pattern with the thing perceived, lest we put the ontological cart
before the horse and begin to think that patterns we have invented out
of whole cloth are themselves as real as the perceived ones or the
things themselves. For example, I would argue (1) that the computer
on which I'm typing this is a real, physical entity; (2) that the
computational process going on which puts letters on the screen as I
type is not an entity at all, but solely a convenient way to group
some of my perceptions (and those of the programmers who wrote the
software); and (3) that the numerals on the clock at the bottom of the
screen represent real but nonphysical entities, the natural numbers,
which (just like the laptop) exist independently of my perception of
them---but all three of those assertions are debatable and have been
debated by philosophers in recent memory.

Re: [MBZ] physics and such

I wouldn't be surprised to find BOTH engines sheared off; they're usually
(often, anyway) held on by only two bolts/pins (one on top toward the front,
one toward the rear) that shear before tearing a wing off. This was the
case with ones that I used to be intimate with, anyway - B-47's and B-52's
and others that I've seen in photos. Shearing the engines off helps keep it
from flipping up and over, etc. If right engine is still on it or held on a
little longer may be what made the aircraft turn sharply to the right after
it hit the water. Better for the engines to shear off than to cause
more/bigger problems.

BTW, remember the engine sheared off the aircraft crashed on the ground
several days ago? They actually shear fairly easily - the pins/bolts I'm
talking about easily carry the weight of the engine and impart thrust to the
aircraft, but are relatively weak to sudden impact shear forces.

Is there anything built into the fuel system to stop or slow fuel flow in
the even of an engine being sheared off?

Ed
300E

2009/1/16 Wilton Strickland wilt...@nc.rr.com

I wouldn't be surprised to find BOTH engines sheared off; they're usually
(often, anyway) held on by only two bolts/pins (one on top toward the
 front,
one toward the rear) that shear before tearing a wing off. This was the
case with ones that I used to be intimate with, anyway - B-47's and
 B-52's
and others that I've seen in photos. Shearing the engines off helps keep
 it
from flipping up and over, etc. If right engine is still on it or held on
 a
little longer may be what made the aircraft turn sharply to the right after
it hit the water. Better for the engines to shear off than to cause
 more/bigger problems.

BTW, remember the engine sheared off the aircraft crashed on the ground
several days ago? They actually shear fairly easily - the pins/bolts I'm
talking about easily carry the weight of the engine and impart thrust to
 the

yea, things are expensive.

Which is strange considering the price of diesel is half of what it was,
that was the reason everything at the groc store got jacked up. When
are they going to start lower the prices of food back down?

Filled up my 100 gal tank on the trunk today at 2.03. Gas just went up
to 1.69 so I figured diesel would probably go up too. Why the heck is
gas going up, oil has been dropping.

PDF has no native way to deal with images. It typically uses

With ghostscript to do the PDF creating, there are options for

$ ps2pdf -dPDFSETTINGS=/prepress in.ps out.pdf
Choices - in ascending quality and size are:

PDF is a poor choice if it's just a scanned image anyway. Better
to just distribute the image!

Anyway, PDFs don't have to have crummy images - they just
usually do!

I also loved the comment about how they were slip up because something
about Regina got them before the grandmother in ME who supposedly wanted
them could, basically screwed her out of getting them. Well first of
all the grandmother there did not want them. If she did want them she
would not have been able to get them. There was nobody in the state of

Re: [MBZ] physics and such

2009-01-16 Thread Wilton Strickland
There are always the firewall shutoff valves actuated by quick-reaction T
handles to stop all flow - fuel, hyd, oil, etc., to the engine ('cept a bit
for lub while windmilling). These are usually located in the strut or wing
directly above the engine; 'don't remember any auto or spring-loaded shutoff
to stop flow for sheared engine - may be such by now - stuff I dealt with
was from 50's, but a lot of it is still flying.

Is there anything built into the fuel system to stop or slow fuel flow in

 2009/1/16 Wilton Strickland wilt...@nc.rr.com

I wouldn't be surprised to find BOTH engines sheared off; they're
usually
(often, anyway) held on by only two bolts/pins (one on top toward the
  front,
one toward the rear) that shear before tearing a wing off. This was the
case with ones that I used to be intimate with, anyway - B-47's and
  B-52's
and others that I've seen in photos. Shearing the engines off helps
keep
  it
from flipping up and over, etc. If right engine is still on it or held
on
  a
little longer may be what made the aircraft turn sharply to the right
after
it hit the water. Better for the engines to shear off than to cause
  more/bigger problems.

BTW, remember the engine sheared off the aircraft crashed on the ground
several days ago? They actually shear fairly easily - the pins/bolts
I'm
talking about easily carry the weight of the engine and impart thrust to
  the
aircraft, but are relatively weak to sudden impact shear forces.

expect this used car dealer to be sandwiched between a PayDay Loan outfit

get the vehicle from someone on this list or even a real dealer.

Here's another question Wilton, what type of oil do the engines on a BUFF
use? How many gallons are allotted per engine, and how often is the oil
changed ? Still amazes me how old some of those birds are, and they just
keep on flying.

My great Grandfather was a mechanical engineer, and I was down having a look
at one of the old steam engines he helped design, while it was being
restored. I was watching one guy pack grease into one of the wheel
bearings! Was about as liquid as cold road tar. lol I can't remember the
