As in: WAIT

Well, anyone who knows her knows how well _that_ flies.
Obviously I'll need the code, but I don't have it, and I
just pulled the radio today and it's not written on it.
(Which is what I'd do if I had it. And I need to rig it
up on the bench so it can run the 24 hours or whatever it
needs in order to start listening to the keypad again.)

It's a Becker BE 1480 out of a 1991 560 SEL. Serial A 9532117,
car's VIN is WDB CA39E9LA 555472, if that helps. Anybody
out there hooked up with the code chart?

The local dealer was sold and has been moved and I've never
been to the new location. More to the point, I somehow doubt
there's anybody still there who remembers me. That's what
I'll pursue if I have to, but talk about a PITA, especially
for a cassette deck! We'll eventually get a CD player, but
not for a little while and I'm very fussy about what goes
in there. No stinking light shows, for example.

Windows Vista, as well as Windows 7, will have the same networking
quirks when talking to Windows XP. This is due to Microsoft changing
the way the Windows network talks slightly with each revision. Mainly
to keep the Open Source SaMBa from being able to automatically connect
to the newest Windows networks without additional code. SaMBa runs on
*NIX systems like Linux and Solaris.

I know you said W7 is more like Vista - does that mean its nothing like

Wow, that's purty. But the usual problem I have with cheap watches
with metal bands is that they irritate my skin something fierce, I
suppose due to some toxic process having been used to plate the steel.
Have been told the same thing by lady friends about stainless steel
earrings, and that you have to look for the ones that say they are
hypoallergenic. Of course some metal bands you can swap for leather,
but not all.

They now have some kind of online based, desktop look client ala

The new integrated text editor Windows Mail uses needs more resources
than the default editor in either OE 6 or Outlook Professional 2003.
With Outlook Pro you can use Microsoft Word as the text editor for

I have had my hatch latch out a dozen times

The vacuum servo is attached to the hatch by two screws, and the
rod snap attaches to the latch mechanism.

You will have to take the door panel off to get down to it.
That means removing the bottom trim, the top trim, and then the
panel. The servo is on the port side of the latch mechanism,
mounted at an angle.

If you do choose to take the latch out, it comes out the hole

[MBZ] Diesel finback buyer's advice?

2009-05-17 Thread Alex Chamberlain
Might be looking at a '64 190D (seller calls it a 190Dc, but I never
heard that designation before). Four on the tree, new clutch master

I'm sure these rust like crazy, but where in particular?

Anything else to look out for, besides other drivers giving me the

I just did that last weekend, the switches were amazingly goobered up
with 25 yr of crud. Turned out I had one bad motor AND a broken plastic
slide, so ended up taking the door apart and swapping all that too. I
took some pics of the switches apart, let me know if he needs any
assistance, I can send the pics along with a bit of explanation. The
driver's side switch with the lockout is somewhat more complicated,
there is the little bit in there that allows for the lockout to stay
locked out, gotta watch for it as it is tiny tiny. Get some kind of
electrical contact cleaner and some swabs, and some very fine sandpaper
or something like that to scrape the corrosion off the contacts. I put
it all on a white sheet of paper, makes it easy to see the tiny bits. A
tiny dab of vaseline or white grease will help hold the little balls and
springs in while reassembling.

While the door panel was off I cleaned a seat switch -- that was like
the window switch turned to 11. But it works really nicely now, before
it was hit or miss.

Wilton sent the recipe for getting the console panel off and the
switches out, it is easy once you know how.

[MBZ] E63

Stopped by the bike shop this aft, next door is mexican restaurant.
Came out and an E63 was parked next to my truck, somebody in the Mex
place. Daughter said, Look at that Benz pimpmobile. It had some kind
of pimp rims on it, but I think they might be AMG -- kinda thin spoke
looking things, blacked out some with the aluminum showing some too.
The car was nice but the rims did not do it any favors. Might have been
a Mexican pimp driving it, don't know if he had any jos with him or not.

Actually, the 190D is not bad. The engine is essentially the same one that
came in the later diesels.

The 180D is another story - it has the same engine that came in the 170

I've never owned a V12. I don't think running one could ever be cheap, but
as for the car, I think both the engine and chassis are pretty well sorted
out. If the standard V12, not the AMG version, I'm not sure the performance
over the V8 is really all that great, unless he has his heart set on one.
Bit more refined maybe. If he wants the performance, there seems to be lots
of SL55s on the market now too. Again, none of these cars will ever be
cheap to run, but sometimes, you just have to spend the money and enjoy. ;-)

As my mother always tells me, this life isn't a practice run! ;-)

I didn't see anything about the radiation levels nor safety in his
 article.

You indeed did not see anything about radiation safety, but he did mention
levels. He says, Plated cathodes read about 2000-3000 CPM [counts per
minute] on a pancake GM tube, indicating that the black deposit is indeed
the intended UO2. He also says of his black bottom-slag, Strongly
radioactive (a couple chunks read 150 kCPM on a pancake GM tube). He
indeed doesn't mention the amount of material in Curies -- one can convert
counts per minute to curies, but I forget the factor.

At work, our radiation control technicians (RCTs) rub sampling patches
(swipes) over things we want to get out of radiological areas and release
things if the swipes are below 1000 DPM/100 cm^2 (disintegrations --
counts -- per minute with the area having been swiped being 100 cm^2). If
it's higher, we get to clean the part we want to take out some more and
repeat the test.

Sounds cool, but what to do with the results? Make a reactor for the
 Delorean?

You're right. What indeed does one do with the results. Natural uranium
won't make a reactor, so you'll have to enrich it some to do that. And
then you're REALLY talking about radiation levels ...

[MBZ] 126 still hard to beat

'Took the 91 350SDL on 520-mile trip yesterday and today. Mileage sorta
disappointing, but that 126 is one fine driving/riding machine. Fill-up at 417

Charlotte, NC); rest of it 70 mph on interstate hiway, 'cept 20 minutes or so
sitting in traffic creeping to a NASCAR race (others going to race, not I).
The mileage figure is suspect, anyway, cause SWMBO did the before and after

Re: [MBZ] 126 still hard to beat

2009-05-17 Thread Rich Thomas
Only 70? OK I think I understand. I have noticed driving from SC to NC
to VA that the nannying gets more and more the further north you go,
north of VA it is full-on. Speed limits drop in NC. At the border
going into VA on I95 there are like 6 signs promising all kinds of evil
if you speed, don't wear a seatbelt or helmet, if you don't use your
lights and wipers, and other stuff, and the speed limit drops again.
{Oh yeah, and one that says Welcome to Virginia! Unh huh} I don't
know, I wonder sometimes if the War of Northern Aggression had the wrong
winner. I sometimes wonder how people tolerate that kind of stuff.

Rant off... You are right about the 126, even my wife noticed. I told
her after we got her SD, that when you get on the highway you will
notice that the faster you go, the better the car rides and handles,
like it is glued to the pavement. She came back from some road trip to
Columbia or somewhere, and said, You were right! It does ride much
better. Now for her to notice that... it's gotta be good. I don't
know if the SDL would be noticeably different, but the 126 is a fine
road machine. Maybe when you get tired of yours, or don't feel like
driving it any more, you can send it down to a more civilized locale for
some extended comparison testing?

[MBZ] Nissens radiators not as good as Behr

2009-05-17 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Got my Nissens from Rusty, spent today trying to install it in my E300.
Not quite an exact fit, had to do some okie engineering on it. For some
reason, it has the tab deal that runs along the length up and down on
the drivers side of the radiator. The Behr does not have this. It got
in the way of the radiator fitting good so I had to cut it off. It also
does not have the metal reinforced neck like the behr.

[MBZ] Using a 603 fan/clutch on a 606

2009-05-17 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
This 606 Im working on that was wrecked in the front has the plastic
fan. The clutch is damaged and I have several 603 clutches with metal
fans available. I dont see any reason why that would not work, does
anybody else?

The top support is ugly as hell on the car, I got it banged back pretty
close to position but thinking about just swapping in one from a parts
car. Does this piece have to be cut out and welded in? Looks like the
front fenders would have to come off also.

[MBZ] W107/W108 electric window regulators/rails - maintenance?

2009-05-17 Thread David Bruckmann
Gang,

Noticing that the electric windows are painfully slow, especially the rears on
the SLC. I'm not using them because I'm worried about the effect on the
motor/regulator gears.

Are the vertical guide rails the place to dab a little lubricant, or is there
something else that's likely to be binding? Is the MB sunroof slide paste the
appropriate thing to use for this? It seems to work well on sunroofs!

Only 70? OK I think I understand. I have noticed driving from SC to NC
to VA that the nannying gets more and more the further north you go, north
of VA it is full-on. Speed limits drop in NC. At the border going into
VA on I95 there are like 6 signs promising all kinds of evil if you speed,
don't wear a seatbelt or helmet, if you don't use your lights and wipers,
and other stuff, and the speed limit drops again. {Oh yeah, and one that
says Welcome to Virginia! Unh huh} I don't know, I wonder sometimes if
the War of Northern Aggression had the wrong winner. I sometimes wonder
how people tolerate that kind of stuff.

Rant off... You are right about the 126, even my wife noticed. I told her
after we got her SD, that when you get on the highway you will notice that
the faster you go, the better the car rides and handles, like it is glued
to the pavement. She came back from some road trip to Columbia or
somewhere, and said, You were right! It does ride much better. Now for
her to notice that... it's gotta be good. I don't know if the SDL would
be noticeably different, but the 126 is a fine road machine. Maybe when
you get tired of yours, or don't feel like driving it any more, you can
send it down to a more civilized locale for some extended comparison
testing?

at 417 miles showed ~21.5 mpg (~25% of it stop-and-go back and forth
here-and-yon in Charlotte, NC); rest of it 70 mph on interstate hiway,
'cept 20 minutes or so sitting in traffic creeping to a NASCAR race
(others going to race, not I). The mileage figure is suspect, anyway,
cause SWMBO did the before and after fueling, and I did not observe the

anyway.   ;

If the standard V12, not the AMG version, I'm not sure the performance
over the V8 is really all that great, unless he has his heart set on

Bit more refined maybe. If he wants the performance, there seems to
be lots

of SL55s on the market now too.

He's looking at any newer SL that's not black/gray/silver,
which means that he has to look hard. Wants a performing
hardtop convertible that actually has trunk space, and the
MB is one of the only. I think this SL600 is just the latest
one he's run across.

I've been thinking about that ESQ in today's sale. I think I'd rather have an
ESQ Octane ana/digi model though. (But the Centurion is a lot more attractive
than the Octane)

I've also been considering the Citizen Eco-Drive. A basic watch is only $67 at
Amazon. Chronos seem to start around $130, and I don't think there's a model
with a digital chrono inset display.

Invictas and Lucien Picards have quite a range of prices, several models seem to
be well under $100 on the internet, including some Picards with $500 list prices.

Replace the window channels. They are worn and too large, allowing
the window to cock in the channel.

This will definitely hasten the death of the regulator, which is an
absolute certainty anyway, they are REALLY flimsy.

Some dry silicone lubricant in the channel will help, but not much.

Only 70? OK I think I understand. I have noticed driving from SC to
NC to VA that the nannying gets more and more the further north you
go, north of VA it is full-on. Speed limits drop in NC. At the
border going into VA on I95 there are like 6 signs promising all
kinds of evil if you speed, don't wear a seatbelt or helmet, if you
don't use your lights and wipers, and other stuff, and the speed
limit drops again. {Oh yeah, and one that says Welcome to
Virginia! Unh huh} I don't know, I wonder sometimes if the War of
Northern Aggression had the wrong winner. I sometimes wonder how
people tolerate that kind of stuff.

Rant off... You are right about the 126, even my wife noticed. I
told her after we got her SD, that when you get on the highway you
will notice that the faster you go, the better the car rides and
handles, like it is glued to the pavement. She came back from some
road trip to Columbia or somewhere, and said, You were right! It
does ride much better. Now for her to notice that... it's gotta be
good. I don't know if the SDL would be noticeably different, but the
126 is a fine road machine. Maybe when you get tired of yours, or
don't feel like driving it any more, you can send it down to a more
civilized locale for some extended comparison testing?

it 70 mph on interstate hiway, 'cept 20 minutes or so sitting in
traffic creeping to a NASCAR race (others going to race, not I).
The mileage figure is suspect, anyway, cause SWMBO did the before

Obviously, I wasn't terribly serious about checking it, anyway.

the figure that is thrown about by nissens is 30% stronger. i've never
heard of a nissens neck breaking and even the original unreinforced behr
necks take many years to break. i'm not sure that comparing new behr with
reinforced neck and nissens with unreinforced is all that meaningful as
neither shows any tendency to break.

it's like the guys who have to have the brass reinforced inline fuel
filters. i mean, if you find them cool, buy em, but it's not like a cheaper
unreinforced hengst or bosch is going to break on you anyway. it is pretty
comical how a guy must have brass and then on the same order will buy a
super cheap chinese control arm. who is he trying to kid?

Re: [MBZ] Diesel finback buyer's advice?

2009-05-17 Thread Loren Faeth

I am not sure what the first 190D was.
The Ponton was a 190Db with the small b to separate it from the prior 190D
the 110 was Designated 190Dc to differentiate it from the two prior models.

Rust starts in the dead space behind the front inner fender
liiner. IF you buy the car, remove the liner and clean out and
repair first. Next is in front of the rear wheels. When rust starts
in the front or rear, then the rockers go. If the rockers are rusty,
you can bet the front is in bad shape, and the rear doglegs will be
close behind. When the rockers are gone, the doors don't close.
The fenders hold crud on top of the headlight buckets, and rust out
the fender behind the chrome ring. Look for putty here. Check the
bottoms of the doors. rust in doors will show up on the door bottoms first.

In the trunk, check the drains from the hinge pockets. THey drain
into the rockers. I always pull them out and drain into the
wheelwell. Sometimes in marine climates, the drain wells rust
out. Check for rust in the trunk wells. Right side should have the
spare and the jack and jack handle, unless the jack was replaced with
a 220Sb jack (111) with the crank. It is great! the OE 110 jack is
a pos. Originally, there was a tool kit, but don't expect to see one
with the car 44 years later

SHould be an owners manual, a parts book and a service book with
tearout stickers as a minimum. You might find radio info or other
similar stuff.

While you have the trunk open, try packing in a whole trap drum
set. It fits, with room to spare.

Power should be comparable to a manual 240D. Better than a 240D auto.

Driving, the 110 in good trim is a joy. Steering is light and
responsive. It is the most stable of any car I have ever
driven. Compared to modern cars, you are sitting in a greenhouse,
with great visibility all around. The speedo is odd, but it is
lovable once you get used to it. There is a nylon bushing in the
gear shift lever (under the nut) that disintegrates every few years,
making sloppy shifting.

You can buy pencil glow plug conversion kits from Q. That makes the
glow faster, but not as fast as an OM 60x. You need to periodically
add oil to the IP, in the cap marked oel, there is a level plug.

Check the boot on the axle. Check/change the diff fluid. Change the
trans fluid. it is ATF, not grease! Yes, manual trans uses ATF.

Check the washer frog they are way cool! the ring around the frog
should activate the wiper. The intermittent wiper thing on the stalk
of newer cars is never as good as just catching the ring with your
left foot for a single flip of der drizzleflippen whenever you need it.

Other places to check for rust is the front bunper mounts and the
rear bumper mounts. Fronts go first where the brackets attach to a
hollow frame. The hollow frame rots off.

Chassis number should be 110.110.10.02 or maybe 110.110.10.019xxx
range, I think. (022xxx was a very early 66)

If you buy it, send pictures, especially one with you driving it
with a big grin on your face.

Good luck!

[MBZ] W107/W108 electric window regulators/rails - sprung?

2009-05-17 Thread Loren Faeth
I opened up the drivers door on the 85 380SL this weekend. Found
both bolts off the rear window bracket or the regulator. when the
window went down, the bracket slid down, vertical and acted as a stop
for the regulator. the rear bolt of the regulator to the door wasin
the uppermost position. (back of the window as high as it will go.

When I reinstalled the window, the rear of the window was way
high. I lowered it as far as it would go in the rear mount, then
lowered the regulator to the door as LOW as it would go, but the rear
of the window is still about 1/4 high.

I think the rear mount acting as a stop sprung the regulator,
although nothing was obvious. I tried springing it back with the
monster channel-locks, and I tried pushing the back of the window
down by hand, but the rear is still too high.

Q or Jabba want $300 for a new regulator, so I don't want to buy a
new one on a chance.

Anyone BTDT?

[MBZ] Brake booster/master 107

2009-05-17 Thread Loren Faeth

1985 380SL

Brakes are normal when you apply lightly. If you push hard, the
pedal takes a lot of pressure to stop the car.

No fade on the pedal, with engine running or not.

I pulled the vac hose at the booster. Vacuum present.

It does not act like a bad master to me, but either the fronts are
not braking, or the booster is a goner. Neither is a pleasant
thought () but the booster is worst. (almost $800)

While I was working on other things, I couldn't think of a sure way
to diagnose. Driving back home, I thought I should unhook the vacuum
hose at the booster and plug it, then drive and see if there is any change.

Any good way to diagnose if the problem is in the booster or master?

Re: [MBZ] W107/W108 electric window regulators/rails - maintenance?

2009-05-17 Thread Loren Faeth
The door regulators are pretty robust. Pull the panel. Snap clips
at rear and bottom, screw in the armrest. then bunp up on the bottom
of the door liner to get it loose.

check to see that the guide on the front of the window is riding on
the front slide correctly. check the rear guide.

If you take out all 4 bolts holding the window to the regulator, you
can slide the window up and down by hand to determine what is
binding. If the windows slides freely, then check the
regulator. look for worn teeth on the rack and the drive gear.

Sunroof gleitpaste should work ok. I like moly gun grease, as it
never hardens.

if you come in my gate, the german will just jump on you to frantically lick

shortcut between my subdivison and another one that is behind mine that is a
