[MBZ] What Have I Done?
Where is the crank position sensor on that car? If you unplugged it the ignition will be dead since it's waiting for the position sensor signal. I think it is on the backside of the engine up against the top end of the transmission. I did unplug this from the back thinking it would need to be disconnected to remove the transmission but it didn't so I reconnected it. I don't see how I could have damaged it... I removed the small allen bolt and lifted the plastic connection off. Underneath I noticed a small flat key that fits into the plastic connection. When putting it back together I made sure the flat key fit correctly in the plastic connection and installed the allen bolt. This may be my problem but it seemed that I reinstalled the same way it was removed. How could I test to see if I have messed this sensor up? [MBZ] Dang. It was one of the 'good' fuses.
I know this has happened to others, but what a pain. My dash gauges all went dead [oil, fuel, tach, speedo, odo, plus blinkers and brakes]. I check each fuse, spraying with cleaner and twisting, then put a continuity tester on all of them, all were good. I finally gave up and took it to my nephew's shop. He discovered it was a fuse that had corroded most of the contact point, so it still showed continuity and power on testing, but being a 30 amp with all the turn signals, gauges and brakes on it the bad spots stopped enough of the power that they didn't work, though it tested good. If it is an electrical problem, CHANGE THE FUSES [where have we heard that before], even if they are 'good'. BillR -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Re: [MBZ] Dang. It was one of the 'good' fuses.
He discovered it was a fuse that had corroded most of the contact point, so it still showed continuity and power on testing, but being a 30 amp with all the turn signals, gauges and brakes on it the bad spots stopped enough of the power that they didn't work, though it tested good. --- In such cases I like to use a Dremel wire brush to clean up the contacts in the fuse block too. -- Jim --- Since the porcelain bodies of the fuse are still good, it would seem that the fusible metal strips would be available someplace without buying the whole fuse? P.S. What's a brand/source for an infrared thermometer? Flukes are available for around $100 but I seem to remember a discussion about cheaper ones that also worked well. There's a lot of myths and mis-information about Mercedes diesels. Marshall could cut through all of that junk, because his knowledge was from firsthand experience, critical thinking, and performing experiments on his own cars. I don't know where I'd be maintaining my 190DT without being able to search Marshalls posts. [MBZ] W126 Bmupers and Chrome.
Hi, What's the market for front and rear bumper covers and Chrome for a 1990 W126. Seems the paint job I had a few years ago failed and I'm getting a free repaint, including addtional rust repair, which was guaranteed, and the option of replacing the bumper covers and/or chrome, now that they're showing serious rust.Still got to pay for them, though. I understand they rust alot and are hard to get apart. Anything else to look out for? Re: [MBZ] Dang. It was one of the 'good' fuses.
I've been known to replace them with a strip of aluminum foil in an emergency. The strip needs to be wider to blow at the same level of current draw, since the foil is so thin. Even better is just taking a handful of spares from a junkyard. I like to coat the ends in di-electric grease, which seems to eliminate corrosion issues permanently. A friend who lives about 3 blocks from my house said he saw hail stones as big as oranges in his back yard. His Town Car was exposed and got damaged which does not please him as he has it advertised for sale right now. I also hear that we did not get the worst of it. [MBZ] Power antenna relay on 1985 300CD?
I am getting no power to the power antenna on the 1985 300CD. The radio works and I swapped out the antenna switches - no effect. All other electrical functions are good, so it isn't a fuse. The schematic shows an antenna motor/relay downstream of the fuse box but I can't find this part on ebay or in any of the online catalogs, let alone deduce where to find it in the car! Re: [MBZ] electric cars - was Cash for clunkers hits home
R A Bennell wrote: No one seems to make any comments on these issues. It is all about the environment and the utopian dream that we can carry on without polluting anything. Nothing practical ever mentioned. Unless the electric generating is pollution-free, the pollution is just moved. Now, in the LA CA bowl, there is some merit to that. Otherwise, the typical modern automobile engine is way cleaner than the coal fired electric plant. Now if we could get some fusion plants online Also have to wonder what happens when a couple of hundred thousand people plug their car in at night. Does the power go off all over or just in some areas? Do you have to shut off your house AC so you can charge up the family buggy? Actually, if there are only plugged in a night, it could be _helpful_. One of the challenges of electric generating is coping with peak load. It takes days for a coal-fired plant to turn on. That is of no use when we need more generating capacity for the 6PM peak. Nuclear fission is even slower, I think.. (Don't know about fusion - still very new). Natural gas can come on line in a hour, as I recall. So coal and fission are used for baseline. Wind is - well, variable. But I'd guess that if you really had more capacity than load those windmill generators can turn on and off fairly quickly. Anyway, if we can shift _any_ energy use to the deep off-peak time, then more of the higher-efficiency, slow-start generators can supply the power. Out here in the country, the electric company gives away dusk-to-dawn lights (but the user pays for the electricity) to help create some load during the night. I'm guessing it's less important now than when the program started in the days before air-conditioning. --Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

What's a brand/source for an infrared thermometer? Flukes are available for around $100 but I seem to remember a discussion about cheaper ones that also worked well. The good ones have the option to change the emissivity setting. I have a cheap one, a Raytech minitemp that is preset to 0.95 emissivity only. That means if what I'm pointing it at is not flat black (to IR), the reading could be off. A laser guide point can be helpful. Mine does not have that feature - but I'm usually looking for either the warmest or the coldest temp so I just move it around until I see a peak or dip. Mine can switch from F to C with a slide switch next to the battery. Oh, distance to spot ratio is another variable. Many of the small ones are like 4:1 - which means if you want to measure a small spot you have to get the thermometer close. My Raytech is 10:1, which is pretty decent in my experience. --Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com -- OK Don Pair of W124 300D 2.5 Turbos -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [MBZ] Repair advice needed
My grand marquis is overheating. I was on the highway and when I accelerated hard it starting pinging and then I noticed it was getting hot. I turned on the heat to see if I could cut down on the temp. Well, it wasn't blowing hot air so I thought it was the thermostat. I just replaced it and it is still getting into the red. In fact, it is getting hot enough it is steaming up. So here's my question: what else could it be? I thought it might be the radiator and the side by the thermostat is very hot and the other side is pretty cool. Does that sound like the radiator? Re: [MBZ] Repair advice needed
My 94 was a pain to bleed all of the air out of if you followed the factory procedure. Going old school of letting it open the thermostat, run for a while to get the air out, and topping it off worked. The 4.6 seems to have a propensity for holding air pockets in the coolant quite well, and for its first few years, had a propensity for cracking heads. What a fun combination. :-/ My 94 had its original radiator when it was sold with over 260k original miles. Donald Snook wrote: My grand marquis is overheating. My first thought when turning the heat on doesn't work is uh-oh, I'm out of coolant That would also explain the radiator being cold on the outlet side, too little coolant flow. Let's take lack of coolant flow as a given. I can come up with three explanations. I'm thinking it's either your WP, coolant level, or t-stat. But if your t-stat were stuck shut with good water pump and coolant level, the heat should be able to melt your dashboard. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

[MBZ] 380 SL
I just picked up the 380SL from the paint repair guy. Looks pretty good for $300. No, the new paint is not perfect, but neither is the part he didn't do. For that money I got the trunk lid and horse collar repainted, the rust behind the fuel door repaired (glass) and repainted, the hood blister repainted, and the peeling paint on the driver's door repainted. And there's a bit of leftover color-matched (no code) paint to use as touch-up. (It was $65 for the pint.) This guy specializes in good-enough paint repair, works out of his garage in 'felony flats'. The trunk is nice and shiny now, the car really looks pretty good overall. Just need to install the new soft top, and deal with the one head gasket. (I hope, I hope!) Then I either sell it, or send it off to Arizona with my snowbird father. Re: [MBZ] Dang. It was one of the 'good' fuses.
Grretings and Salutations, All. In the U.K. in the '60's you could, indeed, get a box of metal form fuses to replace the burned through part on the ceramic body. Long gone now, of course. Just like the early days, a fuse kit was a card with several gauges of wire, a glass tube, some metal end caps and a file-cum-glass cutter thing. Roll your own! God, I'm gettin' olde.
