[MBZ] Oil Analysis

2010-04-06 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
Larry,

Are you still offering a discount on your 3-pack or 4-pack of oil
testing kits? Does your lab provide the soot load for those of us with
compression ignition?

Thanks,
Max

There's a ~3/4" drain in each of those wells - with a rubber boot to
keep stuff from the road coming in through them They'd drain water
though - as long as leaves, maps, gloves, etc aren't covering them.

YMMV

I am in Atlanta now with the 240D. Everything went perfect until I got to
the hotel where we are staying for the ball game. I shut the car off and
came back out after registering and the car was completely dead. Nothing was
powering on. It turns out I missed tightning one nut. The one on the battery
cable. It was about 1.1/2" from the battery. I stuck it on and the car
started right up. I had to laugh.

[MBZ] Another Oil Thread

2010-04-06 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
Dieselvolk,

Just got back on Saturday from a business trip to New England and back,
drove my '87 wagon and put on about 1700 miles. It's now time for an
oil change, but I cannot find Mobil 1 15W-40 or 0w-40 at the usual
places. Where are folks getting their M1 these days?

Also, during the homebound leg, the low oil light came on for a few
minutes, so I checked the level during the next rest stop, and after
only sitting for about 10 minutes, the oil registered at the midway
point on the dipstick (normal point for the low oil level light to start
activating on my car). I was surprised that it (Mobil 1 15w-40) had
drained back into the oil sump so quickly!

Does anyone else find that their M1 drains back quickly in OM60x engines
vs.OM61x? Marshall used to say that one must wait 6 to 8 hours to get
an accurate oil reading using M1 in an OM61x engine, and I guess I
assumed that the same applied to an OM60x engine.

Very respectfully,
/s/

Oil level lights are notoriously inaccurate. Circuit has sensor, some type of
timer relay etc.

M1 oil is like lemon juice when hot. About 90% will be in the pan after 5
minutes, the last teacup full will be tenacious and take many hours to drain to
the pan. That is why I usually change my oil stone cold on all my cars.

YMMV

15w-50? I checked both of our Mt. P Wal-Mart locations a couple weeks
ago, no joy, so maybe I need to cross over to your side of the creeks.
Rather irritating, sometimes Mt. P Wal-Mart's have diesel rated M1 in
stock and I'll buy up all they have on the shelf (all 2 or 3 bottles)
and then six months later they'll be out of stock for weeks and weeks.
I've mentioned it to the workers and even a manager and the reply is
always "it should come in on the next truck" but maybe someone else is
buying all that up before I get there.

My oil level sensor has been pretty consistent, when the level reaches
the mid-way point on the stick it will start activating (stay on for a
minute or two), and when it finally comes on and stays on the level is
all the way down to the bottom mark or 'add' mark. It takes a month or
so (1500 miles or more) to drop to the 'add' mark and so I now just add
a quart when it starts to blink.

I used to only change my M1 oil on stone cold engines, but now I'm
beginning to wonder if that is really necessary on OM60x engines.

I got 15W-40 at autozone last week. I usually check oil in the 60x engines
first thing in the morning, but don't see that much difference after 1/2 an
hour after running, but haven't studied it closely.

On Mon, Apr 5, 2010 at 3:40 PM, Rusty Cullens wrote:

> If you have 3 feet of water in there it will come out somewhere, trust me.

Nah, it isn't 3 feet. When I bought the car, the trunk was leaking. The
service shop says it was the broken antenna, that water was coming in there.
So they've broken off the remainder of the antenna and sealed it off with a
putty/tape like substance. There isn't any noticeable rust in the trunk, so
my belief is that the leak is recent, and hasn't been happening a real long
time. There is rust in other body panels, so I know she has been outside a
good portion of her life.

My brother and I took after the trunk with a shop wet/dry vac and got up a
good amount of the "stored" water that was in the spare tire section. I have
noticed water in the deck lid, though. I open the trunk, and water sloshes
out. The service shop says that the remaining water is evaporating from
heat, rising to the deck lid, condensing, rolling down the lid into the
front of it, then when I open it falls back out and the cycle pretty much
repeats. The trunk has not once been completely dry since I've owned the
car.

So my thought was, is it sealed so well that this water has no where else to
go.

However, I've not noticed any drains. I'll have to make time to try to
locate the ones mentioned here. Greg says he clears his with a chopstick? So
they can't be very large, right? There are small depressions behind the
wheel wells where water sits. We had shop vac'd those out too, as they had
some standing water in them. So the drains should be in those areas, or
somewhere under the spare tire?

Re: [MBZ] 240D Transmission issue

2010-04-06 Thread Ed Booher
I have recently purchased a 240D (W123 1983) and have noticed that the car
is very hard to get moving after sitting a long time, like first thing in
the morning. I can get her started, and she'll idle, but as soon as I apply
load (shift the transmission into gear) she pretty much dies. Now, the key
for the manual choke broke off, and I've got the thing twisted as far as I
believe I can counter clockwise. It's hard to move it to the left though, so
not sure, turn clockwise far easier.

However, after I get her convinced to move anymore than about 100 feet.
She's fine. Stop at signs and lights under load and start back up again
without any real problem. She idles real rough while at stop, in gear
though. But she's my first diesel so I might just not be used to the engine
characteristics.

Any ideas?

I have enough trouble finding quantities of M1 "Turbo Diesel Truck" 15W-40 or
regular M1 20W-50 that I've just started using Delo. I buy it in 6 gallon

No, all he needs to do is wire a normally-closed microswitch in series
with the down switch. When the window hits the microswitch, it will open
and unground the motor wire, just like releasing the console switch does.

And, as has already been stated, permanently lock the window
in the down position. The motor only has two wires, just like
a light bulb. If you disconnect one wire to a light bulb, will
it light up again when you switch polarity to the other wire?
No, it will not.

How about wood blocks in the bottoms of the doors.

That will still have the problem of motor torque twisting things.

My recollection is that the down stop should be a separate stop
against the arm, and that's often out of place. It should not be
putting side force on the slider.

The ONLY problem with the design is that the casting is a bit
too flimsy for the material it is made out of. It warps with
time, and usually cracks when you try to bend it back. The
motor is stall current limited, it doesn't need any more complexity.
It's pretty reliable as-is. The switches get dirty, or the castings
break. Those are the big problems.

I would guess bad fuel supply? Have you replaced both your fuel filters?
If you have black slime in the small filter (probably you can see it in the
engine bay, little clear thing) you need some biocide posthaste. Try a
marina or the internets...

Failing that you might have an air leak in your fuel lines. Make sure the
hand pump (driver's side of engine) is screwed down tightly, too. You
might try wiping down the (probably cloth-covered) injection lines running
between cylinders with a paper towel one night, then checking after you've
gotten to work to see if they are oozing.

Per Marshall, I always start the 300D with the accelerator halfway down.

Good news is, my 300D started that way - worse, really, it stalled out on
the interstate after the first trip to work - and now is running pretty
well. :) Until last week I carried an extra 5gal of diesel in the trunk so
I could run an emergency tank if it came to that...

You can adjust the resting idle slightly, depending which accelerator
linkage you have. On mine there is a nylon nut to the left of the IP link
that can twist in or out. You probably don't need to go there yet but it
might take out some roughness in the interim.

It's never going to be soft but it shouldn't sound discontinuous. ...
Still strikes me as fuel but that's just what I've dealt with recently.

Congrats on the purchase, you'll love it eventually. :)

Oil level lights are notoriously inaccurate. Circuit has sensor, some
type of timer relay etc.

M1 oil is like lemon juice when hot. About 90% will be in the pan after
5 minutes, the last teacup full will be tenacious and take many hours to
drain to the pan. That is why I usually change my oil stone cold on all
my cars.

I have enough trouble finding quantities of M1 "Turbo Diesel Truck"
15W-40 or regular M1 20W-50 that I've just started using Delo. I buy it
in 6 gallon cases at Sam's Club for about what one change of M1 would
cost me.

I appreciate the advantages of M1 but I'm not going to drive all over
town trying to find it.

Re: [MBZ] 240D Transmission issue

2010-04-06 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
I think you need to fix that manual idle adjustment (chokes are for
gassers, you're a Compression Ignition Man now!) as well as catch-up on
things like valve adjustments, Italian tune-ups, check the timing chain
stretch, fresh fuel filters/air filter, etc etc.

Rough idle at stop could be normal, could be injectors, could be idle
speed, could be motor mounts, or combination of all the above.

I have recently purchased a 240D (W123 1983) and have noticed that the
car is very hard to get moving after sitting a long time, like first
thing in the morning. I can get her started, and she'll idle, but as
soon as I apply load (shift the transmission into gear) she pretty much
dies. Now, the key for the manual choke broke off, and I've got the
thing twisted as far as I believe I can counter clockwise. It's hard to
move it to the left though, so not sure, turn clockwise far easier.

However, after I get her convinced to move anymore than about 100 feet.
She's fine. Stop at signs and lights under load and start back up again
without any real problem. She idles real rough while at stop, in gear
though. But she's my first diesel so I might just not be used to the
engine characteristics.

Any ideas?

My oil level sensor has been pretty consistent, when the level reaches
the mid-way point on the stick it will start activating (stay on for a
minute or two), and when it finally comes on and stays on the level is
all the way down to the bottom mark or 'add' mark. It takes a month or
so (1500 miles or more) to drop to the 'add' mark and so I now just add
a quart when it starts to blink.

I used to only change my M1 oil on stone cold engines, but now I'm
beginning to wonder if that is really necessary on OM60x engines.

M1 oil is like lemon juice when hot. About 90% will be in the pan after

Dieselvolk,

Just got back on Saturday from a business trip to New England and back,
drove my '87 wagon and put on about 1700 miles. It's now time for an oil
change, but I cannot find Mobil 1 15W-40 or 0w-40 at the usual places.

Does anyone else find that their M1 drains back quickly in OM60x engines
vs.OM61x? Marshall used to say that one must wait 6 to 8 hours to get an
accurate oil reading using M1 in an OM61x engine, and I guess I assumed
that the same applied to an OM60x engine.

[MBZ] Runaway Diesel! Or How I Survived A Stuck Throttle

2010-04-06 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
Dieselvolk,

You may remember a couple weeks ago I 'fixed' my cruise control. During
a test drive, on a long steep downhill, she stopped responding to CC
stalk inputs and kept accelerating. I stepped on the brakes, thinking
that would cancel the tempomat, but when I let off the car picked up
speed again. I thought about shutting off the engine with the key, and
shifting to neutral, but that was too easy. Tested the accel pedal with
my foot, felt a 'click' as the linkage un-jammed itself, and normal
operation was restored.

There's too much slop in the linkage, I think those plastic ends on the
control rods are the major cause, so I need to order some replacement
bits...

Did you call the highway patrol and get them to come and get in front of
you to slow you down while going off, then call all the lamestream TV

Assuming homokinetic axle, inside boot 126 350 03 37 = $45 wholesale,
outside can/boot kit = 126 350 02 37 = $66 wholesale. Dealer cost is
lower, Rusty may be able to get you better prices or not. I'm using the
2009-10 price list from Dave M's website, I think a newer price list is
out now so the prices may be up 10% or so.

[MBZ] W123 Seat Springs

2010-04-06 Thread Tim C
I think I popped one of my seat springs the other day, very possibly
the first. The seat always had a good bounce to it, and in particular
both sides were pretty well supported. However, I have a tendency to
plop down into the seat, and it gave way a bit more than usual, and is
not very supportive on the door side now.

My seat has been stuck in the full-back position, so I need to take it
out anyway. However, I have a few questions:
1) Am I going to do any further damage by continuing to use the seat?
As in, are the other springs under significantly more tension because
the one is gone? Or will I be okay if I sit more to the center of the
car?
1a) If the springs are indeed more likely to break, is there
something I can do? Bricks under the seat or something?

2) Would I be able to swap passenger with driver seat bottom?

3) Can I fix / replace an individual spring? I've seen a picture of
the seat bottom, but haven't ever had one in hand, so it's hard to
tell if there's a connection point somewhere. I don't have a welder
yet.

4) Will I be able to remove the seat without access to the back? Or
do I need to convince it to slide so I can unbolt the back somewhere?

Thanks in advance for any answers or pointers!

Very respectfully,

came back out after registering and the car was completely dead. Nothing was

powering on. It turns out I missed tightning one nut. The one on the battery

cable. It was about 1.1/2" from the battery. I stuck it on and the car
started right up. I had to laugh.

Re: [MBZ] W123 Trunk Seal

All of the above, theres 3 drains in the trunk, one in each wheel well and one

2010-04-06 Thread Dieselhead
Sounds to me like your Idle speed is too slow. WHen ever you want to
crank the idle speed adjustment up (CCW), your foot should be off the
pedal so the little knob does not have to fight the return springs.

THe starting habit should be: Sit in the seat, close the door, Floor
the throttle (halfway will do), wind up the idle adjustment, turn the
key to glow, fasten your seat belt, hit the starter. After it
starts, let it run with a foot assisted high idle (1000 to 1200 PRM)
for 20-30 seconds, then take your foot off and let it run on the idle
stop.

At this point, it may be ready to back off the idle speed adjustment.
THen shift into gear and go.

I believe you should adjust the idle speed higher. If your car has a
tach, it should idle around 650 rpm or so. (none of my 4 cyls had a
tach, so I always do it by ear.) I am not sure what the book says
for idle speed, but it will be in the range of 650. There are two
ways to adjust the idle speed. One is on the main linkage, there is
a stop set screw. The other is with the idle speed adjustment.

THe linkage stop should be set for about 650 with the engine warm in
warm weather. THen, fix your idle adjustment and set it so that the
end at the throttle linkage is snug, but does not pull the throttle
off the idle stop (under the same warm engine conditions) THat is
with the adjuster out all the way (CW)

THen get in the car, rev the engine up to 1500-2000 rpm and crank the
idle stop all the way. take your foot off the throttle. The engine
should run at 1200 to 1500 RPM (very fast idle). Dial the idle speed
adjuster back ccw until you get a good idle speed.

In the mean time, until you get your adjuster fixed, set the idle
speed stop so the engine runs a little faster, and consider letting
the engine warm up a minute or so before you take off. that will
help a lot with your condition.

Happy Dieselling!

Any ideas?

Re: [MBZ] W123 Seat Springs

2010-04-06 Thread Dieselhead
1. As Jim C can attest, the broken spring can go through the seat
cover and grab SWMBO's new dress. Not a happy situation. Not a good
thing to have the spring grab SWMBO's behind in any case.

2. Yes, find a passenger seat form a junkyard and put that on yours.

3. Someone repaired a spring with a cable crimp clamp type of thing.
or a piece or tubing etc. Welding is not recommended because of the
temper.

4. Unbolt the seat from the car, pull it out. There are 3 bolts on
each side to release the bottom from the frame/slides. you do have
to be able to move the slides to get to all the bolts.

I think I popped one of my seat springs the other day, very possibly

Re: [MBZ] Runaway Diesel! Or How I Survived A Stuck Throttle

2010-04-06 Thread Dieselhead
It is good form to always replace the prastic ends with the steel
ones anytime you get a new MB Diesel. Even though it is a PITA on OM
603s.

Much better to have that PITA in a controlled environment at a
controlled time rather than having one pop off in a snowstorm on an
interstate 1000 miles from nowhere.

I actually started composing the email in my head and worrying about how
much the new control rod ends would cost...

Did you call the highway patrol and get them to come and get in front of
you to slow you down while going off, then call all the lamestream TV

Dude, you could have a new CDI in the driveway!

 Dieselvolk,

You may remember a couple weeks ago I 'fixed' my cruise control.
During a test drive, on a long steep downhill, she stopped responding

to CC stalk inputs and kept accelerating. I stepped on the brakes,
thinking that would cancel the tempomat, but when I let off the car
picked up speed again. I thought about shutting off the engine with
the key, and shifting to neutral, but that was too easy. Tested the
accel pedal with my foot, felt a 'click' as the linkage un-jammed
itself, and normal operation was restored.

There's too much slop in the linkage, I think those plastic ends on
the control rods are the major cause, so I need to order some
 replacement bits...

[MBZ] What happened? Just a coincidence?

2010-04-06 Thread harry watkins
86 300 SDL, just got off I-20 after 80 mile trip. I needed to change lanes and
at about 30 MPH I mashed down to engage the kick down switch. I immediately
lost the A/C and blower, the heater seemed to be wide open.

The kick down worked and nothing else changed. Stopping and restarting the
engine did not reset it, I had heard that is required some times.

Any ideas?

Thanks

The belt slipped, and the KLIMA relay did what it's supposed to? Don't have
any idea how to reset it, unless it's replacing the belt and verifying that
the compressor still turns freely.

86 300 SDL, just got off I-20 after 80 mile trip. I needed to change

The kick down worked and nothing else changed. Stopping and
restarting the engine did not reset it, I had heard that is required
some times.

Any ideas?

The kickdown solenoid is shorted, or the wiring to it is, and
when you powered it the fuse blew, said fuse being shared by
these other components? Just a guess.

Re: [MBZ] W123 Seat Springs

2010-04-06 Thread Jim Cathey

However, I have a tendency to plop down into the seat

Well quit it! My wife does this, it's extremely irritating...

1) Am I going to do any further damage by continuing to use the seat?

Yes. Other springs are under more stress, and the broken ends will
chew through the seat covers, the seat heating element (if any), your
clothes, and into your fundament. Wives are particularly noisy
when this occurs.

1a) If the springs are indeed more likely to break, is there
something I can do? Bricks under the seat or something?

Fix it.

2) Would I be able to swap passenger with driver seat bottom?

Yes. Often the easiest course. Best is another passenger seat
bottom from a junkyard. A pair of seats is $22 at our U-Pull.

3) Can I fix / replace an individual spring? I've seen a picture of
the seat bottom, but haven't ever had one in hand, so it's hard to
tell if there's a connection point somewhere. I don't have a welder
yet.

Yes. I've done so. I like to tack weld the ends together, then
splint the break in heavy sheet metal that I stitch up with the
welder. The repair is at full strength right away. (Welding springs
is bad because it wrecks the temper, which is what the splint is
for.)

New springs are superior, but not necessarily available or
cost-effective. Welded springs are better than nothing.

I've used rag-stuffed pants legs as bolsters under the
weakened springs on seats before.

4) Will I be able to remove the seat without access to the back? Or
do I need to convince it to slide so I can unbolt the back somewhere?

You usually have to be able to slide the seat in order to reach
all four bolts.

[MBZ] Used parts question

Is ther any chance of finding a good used double belt fan/water pump

Mine is wobbly (like someone that broke the tensioner on the

stretching/munching belts.

Also, is there any chance of finding a good intake u-tube with clamps

What would such things be worth, shipped to a residential 21209 address?

2010-04-06 Thread John Reames
Iirc the main diff between a wagon and a sedan engine is the head has
the fitment location for the hydraulic pump... The short blocks are
the same...

I think the only significant change through the years is that the 85
IP has some electric wires going into it and additional crap on the
turbo related to EGR, but the rest of the stuff is all bolt-on like
manifolds, switches/sensors, thermostat housings, engine mounts, etc.

You should be able to swap in a short block out of Amy turbo 617, and
a long block from any turbo wagon.

If you want a drop-in crate motor, without swapping around the IP and
mounts and turbochargers, then it should be from an 85 wagon...

Of course, you could swap the head onto an 85 sedan block, and not
have to swap the turbo and IP, etc... Maybe get the car a headjob
first;)

The hole for the centering nub for the torque convertor in the rear of the
crankshaft are different between the earlier engines and the '85. IIRC, the
'85 is larger. You'd have to use a TC from a pre-'85 engine if you swapped
in an earlier engine.

 bit
of effort to put back on the road. The engine runs and starts fine. The
 car
isn't registered or inspected. (I'm in south western PA near the
intersection if I-79 and I-76.) There is some mixing of the coolant and
 the
transmission fluid which I'm assuming is a problem in the radiator. The
 car
has the 3rd row seat and the interior is in fair shape, although the
driver's seat is a bit ripped up. It has a good fan clutch and a metal
 fan.
Sunroof doesn't work and neither does the A/C although the compressor
 isn't
seized. If I don't get any interest from the list, I'll try on craigslist
 or

 to
the scrap metal guy up the road and take whatever they give me there. I
