* I have a 1992 300SD/S350 W140 with 1999 Factory crated "Zero" time
engine. It works like a swiss watch...What can I say? Yes I had the wireing
harness replaced but the cost on a Diesel was only a couple hundred bucks if I
remember correctly. I think the wireing harness for the W140 gasser was
something like $1200.

Re: [MBZ] Report-back on engine lurch-restraint struts

2010-07-22 Thread Euan

Rolf

Yes, this is idle vibration. Tail-pipe is a blur unless I crank the
idle-speed nob up to full.

And yes, this is a RHD Euro wagon, and therefore non-turbo.

Engine mounts have been changed many times. Not so sure about the
trannie mounts though. Must check that.

Cheers

Euan

I think you have other issues. All the engine mounts been replaced
(including trans)? I forgot about your 5speed, this is a euro right? I
know that as of 83 they still were lacking the extra sound deadening
that the turbos had. This is idle vibration?

Euan wrote:
I undertook to report back on the fitting of engine-lurch struts to

Short answer: I don't know yet. But I will if you guys can help me
with one last question.

Getting the struts on was murder. Took several trips to the tool shop
for wrenches small enough to work in the space available at the top
end of the struts. However, they're fitted now, and I'm a little
lighter in the knuckle-skin department.

Started the engine and discovered, or should I say, rediscovered, an
increased degree of engine vibration in the passenger cabin. Not
intolerable but definitely noticeable. I'd forgotten how much less
was transmitted with the struts removed. No lurch on shut-off though.
I think I'd rather have less vibration.

I'd cranked the securing nuts on the struts down to the limit of
their travel. I'm wondering if perhaps I should back them off so that
the rubber bushes are under less compression and can absorb more of
the vibration. What do you think? Is it necessary to tighten the nuts
as far as they will go? Or will that simply reduce the effectiveness
of the struts?

Re: [MBZ] Report-back on engine lurch-restraint struts

2010-07-22 Thread Dieselhead
My memory is fuzzy on this, but i recall the struts have Nylock nuts.
They should compress the rubber to some extent, but should not be run
to the end of the threads. I am sure there is a spec, but i'd guess
3-4 turns after snug would be enough. Too tight, and they will
transmit vibration.

Unless you know the motor mounts and trans mount are new, they are
probably the problem. It might be just one, but it is beast to
replace all at once.

variety used in the 617's instead of the normal 60x due to the sixes of
elements that are available...

Re: [MBZ] Report-back on engine lurch-restraint struts

2010-07-22 Thread Rolf Martin-Hoster
I think you have other issues. All the engine mounts been replaced
(including trans)? I forgot about your 5speed, this is a euro right? I
know that as of 83 they still were lacking the extra sound deadening
that the turbos had. This is idle vibration?

Euan wrote:
I undertook to report back on the fitting of engine-lurch struts to my
1985 300TD. Did they reduce the exhaust vibration problem which has
bedevilled me since my indie removed my old worn-out struts long ago?

Short answer: I don't know yet. But I will if you guys can help me
with one last question.

Getting the struts on was murder. Took several trips to the tool shop
for wrenches small enough to work in the space available at the top
end of the struts. However, they're fitted now, and I'm a little
lighter in the knuckle-skin department.

Started the engine and discovered, or should I say, rediscovered, an
increased degree of engine vibration in the passenger cabin. Not
intolerable but definitely noticeable. I'd forgotten how much less was
transmitted with the struts removed. No lurch on shut-off though. I
think I'd rather have less vibration.

I'd cranked the securing nuts on the struts down to the limit of their
travel. I'm wondering if perhaps I should back them off so that the
rubber bushes are under less compression and can absorb more of the
vibration. What do you think? Is it necessary to tighten the nuts as
far as they will go? Or will that simply reduce the effectiveness of
the struts?

Grateful as ever for your advice

Cheers

Marshall always said the factory replacement engines were good. If you

Oil pressure switches are readily available. Despite some otherwise
(IMHO) questionable engineering, VW engines actually do this well. They
have an idle pressure circuit and a high pressure circuit. If pressure
is too low at idle, a red lamp illuminates on the dash. If pressure is
too low above 1800 RPM or so, the red lamp blinks and a really attention
getting, raspy buzzer sounds. You cannot ignore it.

They don't have a pressure gauge though, so if the alarm goes off you
have no means to verify whether the oil pressure is really low or the
switch is faulty (a common problem).

Probably okay, but I'm not sure I'd have known then if the springs were
intact. Interior is tan, darkish if I remember right, so it might dye
okay. Will check springs in the morning.

Re: [MBZ] Its worse than that he's dead Jim.

2010-07-22 Thread R A Bennell
Generally, I think an oil pressure warning lamp is switched on by completing
the circuit to ground. If pressure
drops the circuit is completed and the light comes on. Would work the same with
a buzzer and one could easily have
both. I'm getting old and hard of hearing though. Sometimes my cell phone rings
and between the noise of the
vehicle and the radio or whatever, I may not hear the cell phone ring. I like
the vibrater doodad as if it is in my
pocket I feel it before it rings.

Well, it is probably the difference between French and German
sensibilities. My understanding is that the German mentality regards
cars is that you should know what you are doing, and should pay
attention at all times to the operation of said vehicle, and should
become aware when the car is not performing appropriately, and act
accordingly if ist nicht in ordnung. (the French approach is probably
exactly the opposite, laissez faire, non?, though I cannot verify that
from any direct experience)

How might one wire a lamp? A switch that is open by the voltage of the
proper reading, which then closes if the voltage drops below whatever
threshold? Do we have any idea what voltages correspond to the various
oil pressure readings on the gauge? I guess a simple circuit of some
kind, with an LED or something that comes on?

[MBZ] Report-back on engine lurch-restraint struts

2010-07-22 Thread Euan
I undertook to report back on the fitting of engine-lurch struts to my
1985 300TD. Did they reduce the exhaust vibration problem which has
bedevilled me since my indie removed my old worn-out struts long ago?

Short answer: I don't know yet. But I will if you guys can help me with
one last question.

Getting the struts on was murder. Took several trips to the tool shop
for wrenches small enough to work in the space available at the top end
of the struts. However, they're fitted now, and I'm a little lighter in
the knuckle-skin department.

Is it necessary to tighten the nuts as far
as they will go? Or will that simply reduce the effectiveness of the struts?

Grateful as ever for your advice

Cheers

I never did it, but I had plans to install a large red light on the dash in one
of my trucks. I even bought the
light and probably still have it. It is just one of the red marker lights sold
for trailer side markers. I just
thought that a big light would be more noticeable than the gauge or small dash
light. Might scare you if it went on
in the dark.

I've always thought that for oil pressure, an audible alarm should accompany
the gauge. Most people (maybe trained
pilots excepted) do not check that continually, and it doesn't take long for a
running engine with zero oil
pressure to damage itself.

[MBZ] Diesel Idyll

2010-07-22 Thread Frederick W Moir

Hi, All.
Today was a splendid day. Warm with a cool breeze under shady maples.
So, time to prevent my pistons from melting on my latest 190DT. Got out
the bits and pieces and then spent an hour taking off the
f...@#!!**&8^!*&ing verdammt fuse box cover.
Cleaned off the crud and replaced them all. Parts from Rusty of course.
Only took about 15 mins. to put said cover back on.
Q. How does one take off the hood release cable without removing that
one nut that holds the whole car together? The front radiator support
etc. must come off for the front end release assy., just can't find the
other end under the hood. (Please don't tell me it's under the fuse box!)

I agree - the black interior is a turn-off. Sheepskins might make it

acceptable though.

I measured the inside temp at the console with the IR thermometer last
Sunday in both the black 124 and the white 124, both of which had been
sitting in the sun all day - around 4PM. The temp in both of them was
137F.
Surprised me! I was sure that the black car would be hotter. It does
have

tinted windows, and the white car doesn't, I don't know it that makes a
difference or not. Htey were parked at 90 degrees to each other, so it
wasn't a really good test, but interesting that both temps were same!
The door facing West on the black car was 165F.

[MBZ] Its worse than that he's dead Jim.

2010-07-22 Thread Curt Raymond
Just got home from NYC and ran to the garage to do the triage on Hammie.
As I got near the front I knew it was going to be worse than I feared, oil on
the ground, oil on the grill, oil on the hood. My wife had made it sound better
than it is.

The hose that connected the two oil cooler hoses gave up the ghost, split right
in half actually. Apparently I had treated it too roughly last weekend in my
abortive oil cooler replacement. Worse the replacement oil cooler has arrived,
its on my kitchen table...

Engine is tight, I put a wrench on the PS belt and can spin the belt right
around the main pulley, hit the key and the starter clunks but nothing else. I
didn't want to do more and get greasy with the clothes I have on.

He was a good friend for 7 years but this is it, off to that great highway in
the sky.

On a positive note the registration for the Red 190D arrived so I'm off to the
registry.

Well, if the evaporator ever fails, you can check for a date stamp on it when
you remove it and see if it's as old as the car.

I wouldn't believe anyone (with the possible exception of someone on this
list) who said that their '87 300D was "like new." They ALL have AC
wonkiness (who pulls the dash and does the evaporator and replaces all the
vacuum pods, except Wilton or Peter F.?), shifting issues (ditto for the
rest of the vacuum system), and suspensions in need of a total rebuild.

Just figure you're going to be spending $3,000 or the equivalent in your
own

labor to be getting those problems squared away on any car you buy; try to
find a car with good cosmetics, unless you are good at doing paint and
upholstery yourself; and adjust the price you're willing to pay
accordingly.

I know some here will disagree with me, but 124s are not like the 123s
you're used to, Rolf... they are far more complicated, high-strung, and
sensitive to correct maintenance, and you should assume, unless there is
hard evidence to the contrary, that anyone selling one is doing so because
they're in over their head and are tired of shelling out $500 a pop to fix
every little thing that breaks.

It does have
tinted windows, and the white car doesn't, I don't know it that makes a
difference or not. Htey were parked at 90 degrees to each other, so it
wasn't a really good test, but interesting that both temps were same!
The door facing West on the black car was 165F.

Re: [MBZ] 1976 M-B 450SL

2010-07-22 Thread R A Bennell
So how does one get the thing to re-set? I have been driving around with the
red light on for a year or more since
I bled the rear brakes. I assume that it was activated either because the fluid
got low while we were pumping it
through, or the diffference in pressure, front to rear, was triggered by the
bleed screw being opened.

This is on my 76 115 300D of course.

Dear mystery lister -
It seems that you may have a brake fluid leak around the brake switch on top
of the brake fluid reservoir. If that is so, you generally just have to
replace the little rubber cover on the switch. Most of the later systems the
switch is not even replaceable.

This one?

*I wouldn't call that a perfect car. He doesn't mention any work on the
rear suspension, just the front (and that's the easy end). Or whether the
EGR works and the crossover pipe is clean (remember, no way to disable the
EGR on a 2.5 Turbo without extensive modification). R134a conversion is a
red flag; get ready for that evaporator to blow at the higher pressures.
(I guess I forgot to mention fragile, expensive-to-fix A/C compared to a
123's [that stupid Nippondenso compressor]).

Don't get me wrong, I *love* 124s, but they are not cheap or reliable
compared to 123s, and there's just no such thing as a perfect one out
there---any seller who tells you so is lying or just ignorant of the car's
needs. I learned a lot of these lessons the hard way. For example, there
is no way to tell whether the ACC is working correctly in a 124 without a
minimum of several hours' testing by the book. Even better is to drive the
car for a day in varying temperature and humidity conditions---the system's
behavior is *that* subtle compared to a 123. You don't realize how it is
supposed to work until you've driven a car where it's all sorted out. Same
with the rear suspension. A 124 doesn't feel like any previous Mercedes
when the rear end is working right. Until you've driven one that is 100%
rebuilt, you have no standard of comparison.*

That car's riding a lot lower than stock---if it has the Sportline
suspension option it's worth quite a bit more than average, but not $11K. I
don't see the Sportline badges behind the front wheels, so unless it was
repainted and the badges weren't put back on, I'd assume the worst, namely
that the stock springs were cut.

(That reminds me that I have a set of NOS H&R lowering springs for a 124
around here somewhere that I don't think I'm ever going to use... I like the
combination of Comfort shocks, stock springs, and 500E sway bars on my 300D,
and my 300E has 500E wheels on it which barely clear the fenders as it is.
