Yes, they were originally powered by 2 4-71 Detroit Diesels, but they were
later repowered with a "Screamin' Jimmy" 8V-71. Those weren't known for
sipping fuel, but they sure have a nice sound! The big, modern Detroit
Diesel Series 60 engines sure do make crazy power and run quietly.

Yeah well in this nanny state the fella is probably in jail for cruelty
to cats.
On a related note the local council has decided that we have to register
our cats http://www.mitchamcouncil.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=1176
I was in at the council the other day to pay the 500 bucks so they can
tell me to remove my truck from my property and I told the lady behind
the counter that I was there to register my 300 cats, she just sorta
looked at me with that look that only government employees can come up
with, anyway so I ask her if there had been anyone in to register their
cats, she reckoned 500-600 people had done the right thing and she
mentioned that a council on Kangaroo Island and some councils in the
states have cat registrations, which I think is just a big fat revenue
raising exercise and more draconian big brother hates you sorta stuff.

When I last commuted, it was 180 miles a day. I drove it in a
W123. First a turbo, then a 240 with a manual transmission. I
fueled every day. It's just part of the trip. But I don't like
the diminishing options when the tank gets much below 1/2 full.

I too think it's a fine commuter car. Cheap to buy, cheap to
insure, cheap to license, cheap to run. While there are
certainly cars that travel more miles per gallon of fuel, that
is not the only factor I look at.

House I grew up in had a septic tank, and a separate drain for the grey water.
We lived on a hill side, drain left the basement toward down hill until it came
out of the hill side, about 75 feet from the house but only about 25 feet from
the well that supplied our fresh water.

The septic tank and field went off at a 90 degree from the grey water drain and
well.

[MBZ] Ignition Switch replacement 91 300D W124

2011-06-24 Thread Larry
Hi Gang -
Just rec’d a new Ign. Sw. with Key from Rusty and after reading the WSM I
thought I knew how to replace it!

Bt, Wrong. I was able to remove the surrounding trim but rubber boot was a
challenge. There’s no way it’s coming off.

The WSM says to remove the trim with a small screw driver but it’s more than
that. It’s more of a rubber boot that extends from the keyhole to the tumbler
housing. The WSM makes it look like the boot is just around the key hole.
Maybe the manual is for a earlier/later model?

Anyway, I put the surround back in place and I’m pretty sure the tumbler assy.
will last for a while.

Any ideas?

Thx

Re: [MBZ] safety

2011-06-24 Thread Curt Raymond
You obviously don't drive very far...

With a 115 mile a day commute 26mpg doesn't cut it. Its not the cost that
bothers me its having to stop and tank up... With the 190D I stop 3 times every
2 weeks for about 12 gallons. This car is doing ~35mpg, the '85 5spd did more
like 38. The problem is we're still in the learning about each other phase
(I've only put just under 10,000 miles on) so stuff is still breaking. I'm
starting to get ahead of the curve though so we're getting more trouble free
driving after each repair.

The issue is I've got a ton of projects and not a ton of time. The 240D needs
(NEEDS!) fuel lines which considering it MUST ferry me to the airport on Sunday
(off to Argentina no less) will be addressed tomorrow. Until the 190D went down
today I was probably going to do those lines tomorrow, now I have no choice.

My '83 300D is probably the best commuter vehicle I've ever owned. It's
fully depreciated, insurance and registration is cheap, fuel economy is
decent, and it's reliable.

If an LN9000 can match bumpers with a 911, why can't a F250?

And an F250 will be scrunched by a Kenworth and the Kenworth will be splatted

I'm of the opinion that fullsize pickups have gotten stupid big lately. The

Yes - search engines are my friends (though I use Google sparingly). I did
find some good advice and publications on the care and feeding of septic
systems, but for some reason, I value to experience and knowledge of this
group more ---

We're moving to an airpark about 35 miles North of here - on the other side
of OKC. I need the space to build an airplane, so the hanger that's behind
the house will come in handy, and the runway that the hanger sits on will be
very convenient for using the airplane when I get it ready to fly! Oh, yes -
the house is larger than this one also - another plus (keeps the wife
happy).

[MBZ] 190D Adventure!

2011-06-24 Thread Curt Raymond
Leaving home this morning I noticed the starter on my 190D sounded odd, kind of
slow like. I didn't pay much attention but when I left work the engine turned
over once and then refused to turn again. I borrowed a boost pack which did
nothing, it claimed the battery had 12.8v.

So I figure the starter has packed in. I borrowed a strap and convinced my
friend to tow start my car with his Infinity G35x. He was very uncomfortable
with this idea especially when I admitted that I'd never bump started an
automatic transmission car before. I came through in the end though, we got it
up around 20mph, I put 'er in gear and nothing happened, I brought it down to 3
and within maybe 20 feet the engine was running. Worst part was untying the
borrowed strap.

The car has been delivered to my Indy, tomorrow I'm going to buy 3 proper tow
straps, 1 to go in my car, 1 for the Infinity (everybody should have a tow
strap) and one for the guy we borrowed a tie down strap from.

Its always an adventure.

Funny I have the opposite reaction, I prefer a smaller car. For regular
commuting I prefer my 190D to my 240D.
For camping the trunk space in the 240D wins out hands down...

Once my current 190D runs its course I'm thinking about a Ford Fiesta. Better
mileage, cheaper fuel, essentially no effort to keep running. I'll probably
keep an old diesel MB around but for a primary commuter its kind of a PITA to
have an older car.

That stuff can work if the leak is slow enough that you only need to
recharge once a year. If you are losing the charge in days or weeks,
the leak is probably too big for a stop-leak product to work.

I don't recall exactly what brand it is but it is a 42 foot diesel

Geoff was holding the speed down around 60 mph when he drove but a
friend who went along to help, drove the Chicago to Minneapolis leg
while Geoff slept. He only knows how fast they were going because he
checked the GPS after the fact. He was not truly thrilled that his

My friend Geoff, that I referred to earlier about buying the
motorhome in the south last winter and driving it home To Canada,
said that he was impressed with the mileage.
I am going by memory here and my recollection might not be exactly
correct but essentially it is that on the leg from Chicago to
Minneapolis in December or January of this past winter, it did
better than 10 mpg (US gallon - not Imperial) at 85 mph while
dragging his PT Cruiser behind on a dolly.
I don't recall exactly what brand it is but it is a 42 foot diesel
pusher with an 8 point something liter Cummins diesel. Essentially
a Greyhound bus with furniture.

Geoff was holding the speed down around 60 mph when he drove but a
friend who went along to help, drove the Chicago to Minneapolis leg
while Geoff slept. He only knows how fast they were going because
he checked the GPS after the fact. He was not truly thrilled that
his helper had driven that fast in winter, towing a car etc.

2011-06-24 Thread G Mann
As long as your leach lines and the leach field of the septic system are not
clogged with roots or "biological waste"... eh... the septic system
should be happy with household water volume.

I would suggest that you quickly go buy some enzyme to put into the septic
system. Only takes a few spoonfuls in each toilet to start the little bugs
and they grow and eat what is sent down the pipes. It will make your septic
tank last a long time between pump outs and save you a bunch of trouble.

If the tank hasn't been pumped out for 5 years, and it was a family of 4,
strongly suggest a call to your local guy who does septic pump outs and
start "clean" if there is such a thing in septic world.

Conversely, many states won't allow passengers in a moving

The stuff in a septic tank is blackwater.

You can also install a "sludgehammer" which will change the breakdown of
your septic goo to a much cleaner aerobic decomposition and lessen the
possibility of your blackwater recycling system crapping up your

I -hated- the LATCH in our Fords. It was weak, couldn't tighten it to
my satisfaction, and all around not that useful. If you have a
carrier then take the base, put your knee into it, and tighten the
belt - you'll get it such that it won't move without the car, and the
strength of the belt is much more than the little LATCH strings on the
carseat offer.

I did get such that I had the middle belt to an appropriate length in
the Volvo, and just put a lot of force into the seat - but it is a lot
easier with a base, easier enough that I plan to buy one again this
time around.

Anyway, the benefit of LATCH is that it is easier to move around, but
moreso that it is dummy-proof; if you are sufficiently able to figure
out what the dummy might be doing wrong, and avoid it, then it's not
necessarily incrementally useful. :)

What do you think should go in there?
I'm thinking the 617.95x from an 84 300SD. (we pulled it yesterday in
the middle of a thunderstorm, felt like I jumped in a pool with cloths
on. Was better than when I pulled my engine in 4 inches of snow one

My friend Geoff, that I referred to earlier about buying the motorhome in
the south last winter and driving it home To Canada, said that he was
impressed with the mileage.
I am going by memory here and my recollection might not be exactly correct
but essentially it is that on the leg from Chicago to Minneapolis in
December or January of this past winter, it did better than 10 mpg (US
gallon - not Imperial) at 85 mph while dragging his PT Cruiser behind on a
dolly.
I don't recall exactly what brand it is but it is a 42 foot diesel pusher
with an 8 point something liter Cummins diesel. Essentially a Greyhound
bus with furniture.

Geoff was holding the speed down around 60 mph when he drove but a friend
who went along to help, drove the Chicago to Minneapolis leg while Geoff
slept. He only knows how fast they were going because he checked the GPS
after the fact. He was not truly thrilled that his helper had driven that
fast in winter, towing a car etc.

Google!

There is a fair amount of information on the net.

This is something that appeals to me as well. My thoughts were more in
terms of filtering water from the shower and re-using it to flush
toilets. We live in a city that meters and sells us water and charges us
sewer rates as well based upon water consumption. I could save $$ if I
re-cycled the cleaner water.

However, my reading of the subject on the net sort of caused me to hold
off as the issue of filtering seemed like it might be difficult or
expensive. The water can become "rancid" (not sure if that would be the
correct term). My basic thought was a swimming pool filter but that was
about as far as I got before I backed off. I also suspect that this sort
of thing would not meet plumbing codes although I see items in the local
papers touting the idea so it might come to pass that it is OK before long.

I hope others come up with more interesting comments than I have and
will be happy to read along.

Re: [MBZ] Ot motorhomes

2011-06-24 Thread drcscruggs
Well, I think the benefit of the motorhome over the truck camper combo is that
the trip there in the motorhome is better. If one is going to be at one spot
for a longer time then I really believe that a truck trailer is better. But,
if one is going to be some where for only a day or two then a motorhome is
pretty much ready to go in a moments notice. Also the frige is full
(hopefully) and the bed is there for passengers to rest while the on the road.
It beats the heck out of trying to sleep in an auto. To get better mileage
then you almost have to have a smaller diesel motorhome. The 30+ foot jobs by
in large are not going to get over 10mpg. The smaller ones can. You basicly
have a house going down the highway. The bigger the house, the heavier and
hence less mpg.

That's true, but 15 versus 7 mpg should heavily bias the decision toward

It's too bad straight propane doesn't work as well as
propane+isobutane according to Jim's experiments. If the former were
the case I bet you could find the parts at McMaster or somewhere to
make an adapter to hook a 1 lb propane bottle directly to the center
connection on the A/C gauge set. That would be a nice tidy solution.

Or just order some ES-12 and be done with it.

truck and a pop-up tent
trailer, as opposed to using a class c motor home he picked up for cheap. He
explained that when you get to
the place where you are going to camp, it is truly a pain to pack up the motor

Sounds about right.

A friend has bought 2 motorhomes in 2 years, both from down south -
North or South Carolina and Florida if I recall.

The first was similar to what you describe. 454 Chevy. He drove it home
to Winnipeg without much trouble except for some alternator issues.
They used it last summer and decided it was a good addition to the
family toys.

So, this year he bought another one. Still looking to sell the first
one. That big gas V8 probably scares most folks away.

The new one, is a 42 footer with a 8 point something liter Cummins
diesel pusher.

He drove it home from down south in December or January and said it did
much better on fuel.

If you plan to travel with one, buy a diesel!

Definitely.

These things were not designed to be thrifty when it comes to fuel.

As others have said, if you are serious about this, look for a diesel.

Another consideration would be to fond a diesel bus shell and finish (pimp) out

Going through my old boxes, I came across this device that appears to be a
diminutive automotive fire extinguisher with mounting bracket, possibly a
rechargeable one. See the attached picture. One of you "senior" guys recognize
this? It looks too small to be of value in a real fire. When I turn the knob, I
hear hissing. Given that it is made of brass, it must be from years ago. Would
look good in my 240D, maybe? Can someone provide facts about this thing and
how/when it was used? Doesn't look like it would come from Pep Boys or other
discount store. More about the old boxes in a later submission.

I also had a 5.9 cummins 1993 gulfstream. It had 190 hp and it got about the
same mileage. It was woefully underpowered. I also had the 4 speed
transmission vs the 6 speed. I had a fried that had 5.9 cummins that had 230
hp with the 6 speed transmission and it got better mileage and had improved
performance. The 454 is probably better in some ways than the 190 cummins in
my opinion (tho it was a pusher and hence quieter). I would prefer the 230 tho
over the 454. The 454 is a good gas motorhome. I think for the dollar and
value it would be great. I agree that the gas mileage difference is not much
different (if any). Again, it comes down to how fast you go. With the 190 you
can not go over about 60-65 and hard to maintain even 55 over modest hills.

At the risk of hijacking the thread (too late!) Sta-bil is filth and will,
left to its own devices gum up in about a year.
Seriously, leave a can of it on the shelf for a year and it'll develop
"clots"...

The marine Sta-bil doesn't do that (bought a bottle last year and left it at
camp as an experiment). I haven't tried it yet to see how it does
stabilizing the fuel though.

Best thing to do is run it out of fuel and store it empty, if you can't do
that put in 2oz of SeaFoam gas additive or the fuel stabilizer the POR15
people sell. Both are about 2x the price of Sta-bil but work very well.

All good points about "bigger is better" if you want to really peel paint
with it. I presently have a Honda powered [8 hp] one that puts out 3500
psi at the tip. It has the quick disconnect tip set which I find very handy
since it allows lots of variation in the washers use.

I also purchased a separate attachment for it that uses water pressure to
blast sand. Previous sand blasters I've had used air pressure and were
always over tasking the compressors. At 3500 PSI water pressure , not the
case. Talk about "power cleaning" !!!
Down to bare metal in seconds. Obviously, do not use it on sheet metal
parts.

In the past year of use, no problems with the engine or wash pump. I
suggest that for winter storage you want to use a product called Staybil in
the gas tank which keeps the fuel from turning to varnish, and make sure the
hoses and pump are drained of water if you are above the freeze line.

Bigger cost more money, so the question to be answered is "what do I really
want to use it for"... a smaller unit with 2000 PSI pressure will do a nice
job if you are only washing your car of hosing off the deck, but if you run
mud bogs and have sea gulls on the deck you will need more volume and
pressure, thus more cost.

mileage. This would would be fine though for smaller local trips I guess.

A class B Ford diesel or Sprinter would be ideal, but I doubt you'll find one in
the four digit price range unless you buy a used up cargo van and convert it to
MH. Seems like almost all the Ford Bs have 4.9s and all the Cs have V10s. A
friend of mine custom ordered a Ford class B 2-3 years ago and has toured the
USA and the southern half of Canada in it. She did not pay the extra $5k for the
diesel.

Re: [MBZ] Ot motorhomes

2011-06-24 Thread Dan Penoff
Definitely.

These things were not designed to be thrifty when it comes to fuel.

As others have said, if you are serious about this, look for a diesel.

Another consideration would be to fond a diesel bus shell and finish (pimp) out
the interior.

You have the room for one in your back yard

Re: [MBZ] Ot motorhomes

2011-06-24 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
On this motor home deal wife wanting to go to Maine to visit
family. Flights WAY too high right now so I told her only chance
was cross country drive in the car. Then I got to thinking about
just getting a RV of some sort. With a trailer we would just all
ride in the pickup stopping overnight, if it was a motor home, it
would probably be more comfortable. Then I did the math driving
this 454 mh assuming 7mpg, and its close to 2k in fuel just to
drive there and back. So I think that rules that out, I might as
well fly. Only chance on a mh would be to find a diesel one.
maybe even a class c that would probably get better mileage. This
would would be fine though for smaller local trips I guess.

it will get better mileage than if you drive 65-70 (as I did
often). I had very little problem with the 454. I did change
out the brakes and rotors on it and the parts were cheap. The
parts are pretty much one ton chevrolet truck parts. The air
conditioner never worked very well so, you need a generator to
make sure your roof air conditioners work. I think 2 AC's are
best (for southern climes). I do recommend that you have a
gasoline generator vs a propane generator. It is a pain to
have to do both propane and gasoline at the stops. I would
definately check out the engine/trans with someone as the cost
to exchange those out equal the cost of the motorhome. I
presently have a diesel and love it, but I did pay more than 5k
for it. For 5K you can have a lot of fun if you don't have
costly mechanical problems. I will say the 454 was a good runner.

Its a Winnebago, its got the big truck type tires on it like you
sould see on a school bus.

What's the chassis, is it Winnebago or is it Chevy P30?
I'm guessing it's a P30 bread van with a hugely extended frame

Didn't somebody here, like Poos, widely insult the overall
quality of Winnebago camper shells, interiors, etc?

Around here, you could probably sell a decent '94 Class A for
$5k after using it for the summer. (unless prices have suffered
since last year, fuel costs might scare away the buyers)
