[MBZ] Tires?
I know this subject is almost as contentious as oil, but I have a set of wheels for the SL500, factory wheels from a 2000-2001 SL500. They are 17 x 8.25 245/45R17 wheels with the proper (ET 34) offset for my model year. My stock wheels are 16 12 hole alloys (ET 34) that have been chromed and are badly pitted on the rim surface where the holes are located. I'm not looking to spend a fortune on tires, nor am I hung up about a certain brand. Believe it or not, I've had really good luck with BF Goodrich tires for a few years, and I'm prone to go this route on these as well. On average the ones I've bought have cost me in the $125-$150/each range. I would be curious as to the collective wisdom of the list on other potential brands. Also, do they have to be Z rated? I'm seeing a lot of other speed ratings for this size of tire, but no Zs. Many people - low budget students for example - want temporary or part time work. Wouldn't we as a society be better off to encourage people to better themselves in this way rather than settle into a living wage sort of dead end job? Sent my '80 240D off to Yuma last night. The fellow wanted a project. The was pulling it home to Yuma (about 160 miles from my house) with a clapped early 80's Astro van and a car trailer that looks like Columbus brought it over. Of course the 240D, which had been sitting since before Thanksgiving, started right up. Bless its heart. So now, for the first time since 1983, I am without a W123 in the drive. I can't seem to convince my neighbor he needs to give his 1960 190SL garage queen so I reckon I will have to keep my eye peeled for something I can have as a true projectsomething I will not have to rely on daily to get me to the old nuclear plant. Now you'll be able to find something a little newer than a W123 to putter around with. Re: [MBZ] OT - Alone again
Went to the PO this morning to pick up a set of cast aluminum oil tubes for one of my M119 engines. These were typically made of plastic and have a nasty habit of the end caps popping off, causing oil pressure to drop on one or more lifters. MB made cast aluminum ones for a couple of years, but they're scarce as hen's teeth. Buddied up with a guy over in Cocoa Beach that trolls the local PPs for them, puts them in the ultrasonic cleaner and puts new O rings on them. Been waiting for a set for months and just got the call from him last week. Score! Went under the S500 to try and identify the slow leak, more like seepage, of PS fluid. Figured one of the hoses had gotten porous from age and temps, but no such thing - thank goodness, as the PS lines on the W140 are near impossible to replace in frame. The WIS says to drop the steering gear to get them out. Anyway, it turns out my seepage is coming from a stubby little low pressure line that runs between the bottom of the PS reservoir and the top of the pump. It's all of maybe 2 in length, but it's buried underneath the reservoir. Close inspection shows that the pump has to come out to replace it, unless the top tube can be pressed out of the casting it's in according to the diagrams in the EPC. The bottom clamp on it was loose, and I was able to get a 1/4 drive with a universal on the clamp and tighten it. I'm hoping that's the end of that. Cleaned the interior out and gave the car a good washing. I'll be handing the keys over to the youngest tonight or tomorrow, in order to keep the love flowing for MB products in the family. Not to argue... At least not with any facts or logic. Lack of access to education and health care is not ethnic in origin. No, but it IS cultural in origin. Look at medical volunteers going into some countries to provide vaccinations and being killed for their efforts at charitable work. Look at cultures that kill girls if they try to become educated. Look at cultural values among some subculture groups in the US where violence and the degradation of women is promoted in their songs, or the adulation of criminals by Mexico's Narcocorridos. Yep We do not have Volksmarch or all the other individual group activities. Not a great population chasing divergent team sports either. Soccer of nothing. No baseball, rugby, basketball, monkey crap. You pretty much play soccer nine month of the year, and then in winter play it on ice. Society also is more linked than North America. Very much a homogeneous ethnic group, viable smaller towns and villages intermixed between the very large metropolitan areas, mass transit and higher speed rail so you do not need a car to get around. Mate that to having thousands of years of your family planted under your feet, and you can get some messed up failed artist to get you goose stepping. The socialist also make their kids attend school six out of seven days. We should make our children attend educational institutions instead of just warehousing them for 180 days then letting them loose during the hottest month of the year. There is a bunch of poverty in socialist nations. Re: [MBZ] 85 people own half the worlds wealth
It does work here, just not on a nationwide system. WE have corporate socialism, where we pay or allow large companies to harbor profits or produce at a reduced capital expenditure. Individual socialist pogroms are rampant. Osamacare is just the newest form. Social Security, welfare, WIC, unemployment, ghetto housing, Section 8, medicare, bussing, public schools, NPR, PBS, school lunch programs. All incredible drains on the economy, and less able to control funds than hot water through a colander. Our taxes and levies fund behemoth administrative centers that consume the bulk of funds instead of making sure the money goes to schooling. There are more paper pushers than actual workers on most government projects. We have allowed for inefficiencies of scale to creep in so that more employment takes place with out having a statistically significant increase in productivity. Financial institutions pay out obscene C level salaries, while the men in the trenches are struggling to make enough to feed themselves, let alone a family. Many companies are weaseling employees out of hours to reduce the need to pay benefits. The policy has become that you will not schedule any employee more than 24.99 hours a week at the risk of losing your own bonus. This allows your company to off load benefits to the socialists, and you get accolades for putting far more workers on the payroll than you actually need were they full time. So, the little ants work 4.5 hour shifts, no breaks, and need to be around to cover 20hr daily shifts. Five employees to do the work of 2.5 people. Work the guy to the limit, they will only make $980 in a month in Seattle. Poverty level for a family of four. If you can get a second job with 24 hours a week, you could almost have $1900. I am not sure you get much osamacare for your $23k income. In Amerika, socialist policy is meant to keep the populace down and demotivated. Why even bother to better yourself, if you can get limited access to meeting your basic needs? It may suck to stand in line at the food bank, shop at goodwill, and not be able to pay for your smokes, but you get a roof, some food, a few shots, and if you actually hold a job, the chance to subsist on SS when you get to be 67. clay On Jan 25, 2014, at 2:12 PM, Curt Raymond wrote: But the point at the beginning was that socialism in the US can't work wasn't it? It is learned helplessness. We are training them to be docile and obedient. Idle hands are the Devil's playground. We should instead be gathering these indolent folk and putting them to good use in work camps. Help them to find meaning in life by working hard and having an ownership stake in their productivity. I have yet to find a person who poured sweat and tears into a project that does not beam with pride when they speak of their involvement. Building dams, highways, lodges in national parks, improving the nation in some manner will give them a stake in the success of America. They have ownership interests and take offense at their efforts coming to nothing. Most of the WPA folks are long dead, but when they talked of their work, there was pride and a sense of belonging when they visited a location they had toiled day at night to improve. If they did not go off to WWII, they worked at shipyards or other needed industries. Today there is nothing in which to take pride, since we no longer make anything. Just 22 years ago, we produced 40% of our own clothing internally. Today, we make two percent of the things we wear. We will ship our food to a foreign shore for processing because we have regulated ourselves out of the industry. We no longer have a stake in our own health and wellbeing. No idea where our consumer goods come from, other than wally world. clay On Jan 25, 2014, at 2:58 PM, Greg Fiorentino wrote: The vast majority of the freeloaders I've had to deal with are white of Western European ancestry. Re: [MBZ] 85 people own half the worlds wealth
We must remember that communism/socialism/liberalism/and other -isms that declare all men as being equal and entitled to equal shares of the benefits of the society in which they live; (whether they earned them or not); are historically very young social/political systems, and we have no way of knowing if they are going to persist or become footnotes of history. In fact, while Sweden and other Nordic states have been classic demonstrations of successful socialism in the past, they are currently moving away from being all encompassing socialist states. Gerry From: www.thelocal.se: The Nordic model, known for high taxes and its cradle-to-grave welfare system, is getting a radical makeover as nations find themselves cash-strapped. During the post-war period, the Scandinavian economies became famous for a softer version of capitalism that placed more importance on social equality than other western nations, such as Britain and the United States, did. Then came globalization and an ideological shift to the right has led to a scaling back of the public sector. In Sweden, visitors are sometimes surprised to learn about year-long waiting times for cancer patients, rioting in low-income neighbourhoods and train derailments amid lagging infrastructure investment. The generosity of the system has declined, said Gothenburg University politics professor Jonas Hinnfors. Much of this already started changing in the 1980s and especially in the 1990s. In the wake of a banking crisis in the early nineties, Stockholm scrapped housing subsidies, reformed the pension system and slashed the healthcare budget. A voucher-based system that allows publicly funded, privately managed free schools to compete with state schools was introduced, and has drawn attention from right-wing politicians elsewhere, including Britain's Conservative Party. In 2006, conservative Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt's government accelerated the pace of reform, tightening the criteria for unemployment benefits and sick pay while lowering taxes. Income tax in Sweden is now lower than in France, Belgium and Denmark, and public spending as a share of GDP has declined from a record 71.0 percent in 1993 to 53.3 percent last year. Once the darling of progressives, Sweden has become a model for free-market-leaning thinkers including British weekly The Economist, which last year hailed the scaled-down Nordic model as the next supermodel. They offer a blueprint of how to reform the public sector, making the state far more efficient, it wrote. This month, the Wall Street Journal praised tax cuts and entitlement reforms in Sweden and Denmark that are now discomfiting their big-government admirers overseas. Although polls show strong support among Swedes for the income tax cuts of the past few years, the leftist opposition looks set to win this year's general election. The Social Democrats, in power for much of last century, have been boosted by a string of scandals in private elderly care homes involving degrading treatment of their residents, and by plummeting school results in international rankings. Critics wonder, however, how the workers party will inance an improvement of public services, having already pledged to keep the popular income tax cuts. If Sweden is the Nordic country to have gone the furthest in shrinking its welfare state, Denmark has moved the fastest. When her Social Democratic government took power in 2011, there was little to suggest Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt would make any dramatic changes to the country's cherished welfare state -- funded by the world's highest tax burden. After a centre-right government had raised the retirement age and reduced the unemployment benefits period from four to two years, Gucci Helle -- as she is known among her detractors -- went on to cut corporate taxes to 22 percent from 25 percent. Other reforms have included requiring young people on benefits to undertake training, and withdrawing student aid to those taking too long to finish their studies. It has left her deeply unpopular in some quarters. At last year's May Day speeches, she was met by jeers as audience members sprayed her with a water pistol, threw tomatoes at her, and even flashed their buttocks. For some of Thorning-Schmidt's allies -- notably the leftist Red Green Alliance -- the reforms have been too much to stomach, and in November her minority government had to seek support from the main opposition parties to pass this year's budget. Denmark has been spurred into action by a persistently sluggish economy since a housing bubble imploded in 2007, leading to anaemic household spending. Among Danes there is also a sense that the welfare state was ballooning out of control. In 2011, a TV report aiming to show what life was like for the poor in Denmark visited the home of a single mother on benefits, whose disposable income turned out to be 15,728

Re: [MBZ] 85 people own half the worlds wealth
Makes sveenen hardly the socialist utopia it is touted to be. That must be why Garrison Keeler moved back to the US of A. In 2011, a TV report aiming to show what life

Re: [MBZ] 85 people own half the worlds wealth and 90% of the people
Well is it good? I personally don't think concentration of wealth to that degree is. Where are the jobs? A that's right the Waltons are opening another wallymart on the corner and Microcrap is rolling out another buggy pile of junk to keep it's code slaves busy patching up. The problem is a l lot of the middle sized companies are gone, swallowed up by the big fish, stripped down and production shipped OS, just so some person gets another few million to put on the big pile they already have. But hey they have no obligation to provide decent jobs, so that's alright, they have an obligation under the mantra of 'greed is good' to make money for themselves. However I hope that they have at least an understanding that desperate people do desperate things. Some will say that the world has become a plutocracy since these wealthy people meet in Davos yearly and plan the worlds direction. Is that necessarily bad? Historically, the world has seen many plutocracies large and small. Some are of great value to the citizens in their realm such as was the plutocracy that controlled Venice, the richest city in Europe during the Middle Ages. It's citizens prospered due to the decisions of the wealthy families of Venice. Currently the U.S. has the most billionaires and the U.S. is the most prosperous nation on earth. Barring bad luck, we Americans prosper according to our ambitions, abilities, wisdom, and intelligence. I was born in 1929 and I've seen the U.S. grow from a time when many thought it was doomed, to the richest and most powerful nation on earth, and many of the people who saved it were wealthy or those who sought wealth. Great leaders come in all sizes, shapes, temperaments, and ambitions; and they often become wealthy. As long as a nation such as the US remains a democracy, wealthy people who become a threat can be suppressed; one way or another. (End of rant) Gerry Only the socialist/(whatever name they want) think it is bad. They try to use that to rile up the populace. The ruskie revolution shows the template. They got two sides fighting, let them wear down, then came in and wiped out the remnants of both sides. Mao the murderer did the same. Allies vs the Axis. One point though.
