If I were looking for a brand new truck it would be the new body silverado that
came out for 14. Very very nice truck, worlds ahead of ford or dodge at the

As they say in the car business, you are in the new car business to be in the
used car business. In other words, there are very little margins on new cars. A
dealer may make a few hundred on a new car. They hope to get good trades to
make the real money on. Plus there is the service business and the finance. On
the used cars there are most often very large margins. Most dealers are going
to make 2-4k per copy, plus they would get another trade usually to make money
on, plus they make money on the back in in the F&I. Maybe many many years ago
there were large margins on new cars but that simply is not the case these days.

My question exactly.

Unless someone is a movie star or head of state, I can't see how owning
their former car has a lot of value. What are you going to do, put a
magnetic sign on the side and advertise that it was previously owned by
xx?

Unless you're a superfan, I fail to see the value.

IIRC, the V8 has more torque, which is what a truck needs. The STX is a
step up from the base - I got the base short cab, long bed, with added
electric windows and locks and running boards. I did have to order it -
there were none that met my specs in OK.

2014-07-27 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Time is valuable. Right now the bed has to come off again, its rusted all
around the patches I put in. Then the gas tank has to be dropped, the mid cross
member reinforced and a new rear gas tank strap holder made and installed since
the original is riveted in place and can't be bought. So I spend 3 days welding
it back up and what have I gained? A new lease on a truck thats essentially
worthless.

The Ranger is also too small for us, when we travel we have to take a big
plastic tote in the bed. A midsize truck like my Dakota would be optimal but
there just aren't any we like. We tried the Tacoma and Frontier and didn't like
either. I find the ergonomics of the Frontier terrible, it aggravates my right
knee but that seems to be a common Nissan thing, they never let the front seats
go back far enough for me.

Plus for what you'd pay for a Tacoma or Frontier you can have an F150 and the
Ford gets better mileage than the Nissan and only 1 mpg worse than the Toyota
which has a 4 cylinder engine. The Toyota has lower cargo capacity, lower
towing capacity, its got a C channel frame where the Ford (and the Nissan
interestingly) have box frame which flexes less. There apparently is a reason
the F150 is the best selling truck in the US...

Used truck prices are stupid right now. 4 years old you're looking at $20-24k,
for $4,000 more I can buy brand new.
Toyota is the worst, 8 years old is $16-18k. I think few people were buying new
from say 2008 to about 2012 so there just isn't that much inventory in used
trucks. When I bought my Dakota there were a bunch of used trucks, same when I
bought my Ranger. Now every dealership has a few but not that many.

I just looked and our local dealer (the one we tried today was just over the
border in NH) has nearly the same truck for $33,000. Seems like if he's got it
for $3k less than the other guy he ought to meet my $25k price. I should ask
$22k... I'll have to run over and try one tomorrow so when the NH guy calls I
can tell him I drove another one (same color even) and want the better price.

I want to drive the v6 too, it gets 2mpg better and costs $1000 less. This is
the 3.7l na, not the eco boost which adds another $1000.
They say the v6 is 302hp, the turbo adds 63hp. The 5.0 v8 is 360hp.

302hp seems like plenty. My Dakota had like 210hp with a 5.2l v8, Ranger is
something like 205hp with a 4l v6. I drove a Chevy last year with their 4.3l v6
and although towing a 240D I had to keep it in 3rd coming up the highway I
think that was just a factor of too high gears for the job. It wasn't really
working that hard.

[MBZ] OT: How is this game played exactly?

2014-07-27 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Trip #3 to try out new trucks took us to a Mazda dealership that had a 2010
Chevy Silverado and 2010 Ford 150. We decided we liked the Ford better but it
was a crew cab (and $28k).

We don't need a crew cab full size so we decided to go over to the Ford dealer
who actually persuaded us that it made more sense to look at a new truck than
used. We drove a 2014 F150 STX access cab, which is I guess pretty much the
base model, cloth seats, rubber floor mat, 5.0l v8. Its still pretty fancy,
6spd auto, satellite radio, AC blows ice cold :) 4wd with electronic locking
rear diff.

Sat down to do the numbers, they're giving a base price of $36,600 and the
first deal came down to $30,000 which with taxes and fees is something like
$33k. That includes $500 for our ranger plus something like $2,000 in loyalty
money. I decided we couldn't pay that much and he came back with "Well what
would close the deal today?" So I said $25,000. They came back with $28,000.

We left saying we still wanted to try the Dodge. I expect they'll call this
week at least to thank us for going in but I'm wondering if they'll except my
offer. They tried to tell us that when the 2015s come out (with the new
aluminum body panels) that the 2014s will get scarce and they'll stop the
incentives. That seems to not make sense to me, surely the 2014s get cheaper.

I'm also seeing it. Weirder still the iOS7 mail app lists all the emails as

show "x via Mercedes" which is much preferred because some folks don't sign
their messages and those who don't I can't identify. I asked a kid at the Apple

had been many fixes in iOS7 but didn't know if that had caused it or what to do.

My question exactly.

Unless someone is a movie star or head of state, I can't see how owning their

Unless you're a superfan, I fail to see the value.

I just had my Hoppy Brown Ale I made 3 weeks ago. I found in the fridge a
coupla packets of hops I had brought from Houston (we moved here 6 years ago,
it was from 2005!) and threw that in, along with a package of whole hops I did
not use in the last batch of bells two hearted IPA clone, and whatever the
recipe called for. It was quite bitter but sorta mellowed out, maybe I got used
to it. Probably not my best batch but drinkable Experimentation!

I got my daughter a brew kit for her birthday, it had a basic brown ale kit
included, she decided to throw in some extra hops and it turned out quite well,
better than my experiment! She is hooked now it was so good!

Re: [MBZ] Today's cheap home brew Find

2014-07-27 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes

Lol, I've been home brewing for a couple decades now.

You can indeed make decent beer at much less cost that the main line
brews bought at the liquor store, and you can make things that were
once unobtainable.

In the last twenty years, the quality of microbrewery beer has
increased quite a bit, but I still don't like super hoppy beer, so I
make the stuff I do like, such as the recent Honey Blonde Ale that is
getting rave reviews -- with honey from my own hives to boot.

It's a great hobby, and not all that expensive once you get the basic
gear.

Re: [MBZ] Today's cheap home brew Find

2014-07-27 Thread Hendrik and Fay via Mercedes
Yeah you do save money in the long run, sometimes you can find compete
kits second hand, being sold by someone who either got the kit as an
unwanted present or did a couple of brews and did not like the taste
because they don't know what they are doing.
Retail price on a Coopers kit is 80-90 AUD and you get one can and
converter with it. Everything there to get you started but the Coopers
can is not grade 1 gear.
That will brew 22 litres. The cheapest half decent beer you can buy here
is about 40 AUD for 12 litres. So essentially the first brew is a break
even proposition. Then you go and buy a decent can and converter, which
will be round about 30 bucks, you can go real cheap in the supermarket
and use sugar but the result will be not so good.
I work on about AU$1 per 750ml bottle, that works out at 12 bucks a
carton (24 stubbies) which is about a third of the cost of store bought
beer. As said if you really cheap out you can get the price per 750 down
to 60 cents or so but the stuff is ordinary.
Sure there are other bits that make life easier, such as bottle draining
tree, capper, heaters, etc but in the long term you will save money and
quality ingredients will make a pretty good beer.
Bottles are another expense, I have round about 150 or so glass bottles.
You can get PET ones but they are not suitable for long term storage.
There is also the kegging option but the draw back there is start up
cost and the on going cost of CO2 gas, which has gotten pricey.
You also need a dedicated space for your 'brewery' the vats need to be
in the 18-24C range and the bottles are best stored between 13-20C.
Brewing in the house is not so good, as the missus will complain about
the smell.

Hendrik
Who is off today to get some more ingredients, might make a ginger beer,
another brown ale and a lager (I have three vats). I like to mix the
brown ale and lager together to get a lagery ale.

Do you actually save money, or just do it because you are more independent

of you made great suggestions, which I do appreciate but none of which I
followed. I quickly learned that I could paint it, anyway, by keeping roller
wet and not rolling it back and forth - don't make more than one repeat pass
until the surface has dried. After a coat of paint has dried on it, I could
easily roll paint it at will.  Try not to make ANY repeat pass while it's wet;
can repeat lightly if it's done immediately, before the paint soaks though to
the mating surface and causes the stippling to separate from the ceiling. I
was able to camouflage/re-stipple small areas where I had "lost" stippling by
putting globs of caulking on end of a broomstick and touching it to the
ceiling. I can tell the difference, but I know where to look.

Owned the house for 34 years; had one tenant for 33 years.

Other than "Atomic City" and the main road being "Trinity" (as in the
location of the first nuclear test), there isn't that much "nuclear", is
there?

Nice place. I enjoyed my visits there, especially the fact that everything is

Wholesale price is where a dealer buys a car from another dealer wholesale, or
more specifically a wholesaler goes to franchise store and buys their trades
and sells them wholesale to another independent store. Trade in price is when a
customer is trading in their car for another car either at a franchise store or
independent. The wholesale price is usually more than the trade amount.

I've never found this to make much difference. I've also tried cleaning
the socket and pins with contact cleaner, nothing really seems to work
long term. Maybe a contact enhancer like Stabilant would help.

[MBZ] S-class auto park

2014-07-27 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes

MBUSA have posted a vid on FB of an S-class parallel parking itself.

In a tight spot? No longer. Thanks to available Parktronic with
Active Park Assist, the S-Class lessens the worry of finding,
entering, and exiting parking spaces -- whether parallel or
perpendicular. Using advanced ultrasonic sensors, the S-Class is
able to park itself upon the driver's command, without any human
input. See it in action in this video.

I guess it kinda goes with their target demographic, at least from what
I see around here.

Ethanol can cause trouble with some rubber seals and plastic parts,

Re: [MBZ] OT-ish Trans flush.

2014-07-27 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
If you take a neglected tranny with ancient non-synthetic oil in it
and flush it with fresh synthetic fluid, it's possible to remove
enough varnish from the valve body that shifting problems arise.

Also, in the 70's, synthetic oils didn't have enough seal swelling
material in them, and rubber seals saturated with mineral oils could
shrink when the fluid was changed, resulting in failure. This
particular issue was addressed when I was in high school, shouldn't be
a problem now.

The only other issue would be a bunch of scale collected all of the
the tranny that comes loose with the synthetic, clogging the filter
and causing issues. Easily addressed by changing the filter again.

Otherwise, if the dirt and varnish is all that keeps the tranny
working, it's shot anyway.

ethanol is often blamed for causing the needle valve to stick - it

I finally really needed the chain saw, so installed the new carb on it, but

Re: [MBZ] OT-ish Trans flush.

2014-07-27 Thread LarryT via Mercedes
i agree completely. I can only add that the logic of changing the
fluid in a transmission is akin to changing the oil in an engine. No one
ever suggests that replacing the oil in an engine is a bad thing. I
fail to see how doing the same to a transmission could cause damage.

re the people who claim their transmission failed after a flush - IMO
their tranny probably was failing and that caused them to have a flush
done - that's like having a heart attack and dieing while medics try to
shock the heart back into life - then blaming the shock for the death.

BTW, On a vehicle without a drain plug on the TC, flushing is the only
way to get all the old trans juice out.

LarryT

On 7/26/2014 5:30 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote:

I take exception to this statement.

If flushing were such a bad thing, there would be literally tens of thousands
of failed transmissions out there.

I hear talk of "fluid shock" on occasion as well, and find this just as bogus. That is
described as the condition where one drains and refills a transmission and the lack of
"dirty" fluid full of old material causes the transmission or valve body to fail.

Think about this logically:

Dealers, indies and others have historically drained and replaced fluid in
slushboxes for years. If there was the potential for damage or failure be
replacing the fluid or flushing there's no way they would be doing it, for fear
of having to buy the customer a new transmission.

I've had a couple of non-MB transmissions flushed by competent independent
mechanics. The last one was the wife's 2005 Mazda 6, which was flushed at the
factory interval of 75k.

It's worked perfectly since it was done.

Some claim that by flushing or doing a complete drain and refill you take friction
material that was floating around in the system and "helping" the clutches and
bands to continue working.

Bogus.

Most of that material, not all, ends up in the filter.

I had the discussion about "fluid shock", which is the procedure you recommend
to prevent such a condition, with a 20+ year MB line mechanic at my local dealership. He
said that in his tenure he has never heard of such a thing, and that they regularly drain
and refill transmissions all the time without ever encountering a failure.

He thought it was funny.

Just my $0.02.

[MBZ] Strange Finds

2014-07-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Worked on the R129 this morning to see why the headlight washers were
nonfunctional. Been this way since I got the car, but not something I've had
time to investigate. Had the passenger side headlight out to get at the wiper
motor. It's toast, which explains why if it's powered up both wipers run and
the washer pump runs continuously. Whatever.

Put new grommets on both washer pumps in the washer fluid reservoir as well,
since once was seeping.

Anyway, I noticed two strange things when I was working in this area:

1.) The washer line going to the pump for the windshield had two wires embedded
in the line itself. They were very small wires, maybe 16-18 gauge stranded,
and were molded into the clear line with the woven fabric that you would
normally see for washer fluid line. They exited the end of the line at the
pump and were connected together with heat shrink tubing covering them. They
don't appear to go anywhere.

2.) In the same general area, I found a cable that had a two pin connector on
the end that was about 1/4" round with two very, very small sockets in it. It
also had a barrel with an O-ring on it as if to seal the connector when it's
plugged in to the matching connector.

I'm wondering if these might be for the washer fluid heaters on the hood. It's
quite possible the doofus that did the repairs on teh car when it was hit in
the front just clipped these off not realizing they were something important.

???

I'm not sure why the system is rejecting your address. I have added
you to the whitelist - see if you can post now.

Also, I can tell you that you were being bounced in the past when you
sent messages out to the list with it being part of a BCC distribution
list. The list software won't accept group message like this, as this
is a typical means of sending spam. I do recall seeing some of your
posts with non-subject matter sent out to a BCC list in the bit bucket.

I assume 40k is to prevent digest quoting or hostile script attachments.

Re: [MBZ] W123 parts

2014-07-27 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Kelley Blue Book on-line is a good resource -- they list a 1987 300E
as retailing between $4000 and $9500 depending on condition, and in a
case of accident damage they owe you the RETAIL (replacement) cost,
not the WHOLESALE (trade-in) value of the car, since their insured
damaged YOUR car through no fault of your own.

They try that dodge too. Offered me $1500 for my 300D eight years ago
when some dimbulb ran a stop light and totaled it. I laughed, retail
was 4-6 and it has gone UP since then -- highly desirable car and
limited supply.

Most auto adjusters are clueless about the value of a Benz, they
rarely encounter one, it's almost exclusively Detroit of Japanese
disposable cars.

And I guess most people don't care if they are getting screwed, or
they would do something about it.

Agreed. As we've all heard of or dealt with similar situations over the years,
it's crazy to accept their initial offer. Do your due diligence and find as
much supporting documentation that you can. We have so many great resources
available to us today that it's crazy to accept their offer unless you know
it's fair. They're going to go to the books, which often have limited or no
information, making their offers ridiculously low. What they won't tell you is
that Black Book values are often well above what they will offer - you can get
Black Book values from your bank or credit union. BB used to be "Cars of
Particular Interest", a great resource I used to subscribe to when they used to
offer the service to consumers. It's based on wholesale auction data, so it's
very relevant and accurate.

If you have proof of sales that support your numbers they're going to push back
a lot less, so it appears.

Their biggest concern is closing out the claim and getting it off the books.
In other words, how little will it take to make you go away?

Re: [MBZ] Today's CL Finderer

2014-07-27 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Did some research on BW and found that this is not an uncommon problem for the
722.3/4/5 transmissions. Seems that they use a combination of vacuum and
throttle position to delay upshifts (sound familiar, diesel owners?) There is
a vacuum valve and relay that do this, and one or both are often the culprit
along with possibly breaks or leaks in the related vacuum lines.

With this in mind I think I'll have a look see today if I can track down the
seller.

Yeah, I'm not real clear on the change where they went to the 722.6 tranny.

I wonder if it shifts manually... That would be a giveaway.
