Sorry, Wilton, it is not a drain vent. It's a vacuum breaker in the drain

Kaleb,
If you've got in cleaned out and working, I would recommend changing the drain
as others have suggested and leave the DW alone. Return the Bosch and use the
money on your true love, your MB cars. Again, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Or in this case, replace it.

[MBZ] Yes, even more on the latest dishwasher saga

2016-04-06 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Last night ran empty load with baking soda and vinegar. Today went to Walmart
and bought dishwasher magic and ran that. When it was done the washer was
noticeably cleaner. Ran the load of glasses that have been thru the washer at
least 5-6 times as well as a few other dishes. The load just got done and they
are absolutely sparking clean. Unbelievable. So now I have this brand new Bosch
sitting outside in the suburban new in the box. Do I try to return it? Go ahead
and install it and keep the maytag as backup in case the one on the rental
quits, which it is about 6 or more years old now. I knew as soon as I pulled
the trigger on a new one this would happen. Oh yea I did add a little bit of
this detergent booster I found at Walmart as well which I suspect is high
priced citric acid.

Re: [MBZ] Yet even more dishwasher talk

2016-04-06 Thread WILTON via Mercedes
The "contraption" you mentioned may be a vent, or air admittance valve,
which is often used in lieu of a vent pipe or stack that otherwise may need
to protrude through the roof (usually). Vent to atmosphere is necessary to
allow the system to drain properly and to prevent the water from being
sucked (siphoned) out the trap. When venting a sink drain (not DW drain)
through the roof is not practical or too costly, an air admittance (one-way)
valve can be installed in a short stack usually up under the cabinet near
the sink to let air in but does not allow flow out.

Wilton,
In looking again at my connection, my under sink drain does have some
contraption plumbed in after the trap which could be an anti siphon vent.
My DW drain comes into the drain just after the two sink bowls and just
before the trap. The plumber used a downward pointing "Y" connector which
helps prevent any sink material from getting into the DW line and also
provides somewhat of a more forceful water flow from the DW into the sink
drain and trap, possibly helping to keep the trap cleaner (never had a
kitchen sick clog). It looks funny to me (I'm not a plumber and I didn't
stay in a Holiday Inn last night), but again, it sure seems to work fine.

Kaleb,
I have a 1980 300SD. It currently has around 425,000 miles. I had the tranny
replaced with a used one. Had problems until I determined it was the vacuum
module on top of the IP. So I just bypassed it and now it shifts fine (a little
firm, but ok for me). Other than the tranny, this car is all original (well I
did replace the seats and pads about 15 years ago). It rides and handles better
than most new cars. It's getting old enough that it starts slow when the temp
gets below 30 degrees. It's a pleasure to drive. It mostly sits in the garage
these days and gets out once or twice a month to charge the battery and
circulate the oil, grease, etc. Those were the days of all metal and almost no
plastic. You really feel secure in that car.
Best Wishes,

Wilton,
In looking again at my connection, my under sink drain does have some
contraption plumbed in after the trap which could be an anti siphon vent. My DW
drain comes into the drain just after the two sink bowls and just before the
trap. The plumber used a downward pointing "Y" connector which helps prevent
any sink material from getting into the DW line and also provides somewhat of a
more forceful water flow from the DW into the sink drain and trap, possibly
helping to keep the trap cleaner (never had a kitchen sick clog). It looks
funny to me (I'm not a plumber and I didn't stay in a Holiday Inn last night),
but again, it sure seems to work fine.

Curt,
I think mine was a GE, at least I use GE filters, which you can buy in various
types (taste, particulate, etc.). I had it installed inline before the main
water line gets to anything, thus the whole house is filtered. I also have a
filter in my refrig for water and ice. Since it's now just my wife and I (girls
are gone), I only change the filters about once per year. The whole house
filter has a clear housing so it's easy to visually check.

Maybe the W116 cars are getting more interesting, but I do not think they are
going to command his price. Fix the seat, and maybe. There are too many
common parts with a R107 that get stripped at PnP or go into an SD, not a

had my 300TD. I should have bought it, the 116 is a glorious car to drive...

If you look at the photo I sent earlier, it looks like I could just swap
the section where the dishwasher drain goes into to the section right
above the trap, just swap those 2 sections of pipe. This would lower the
level of the trap a bit. Not sure that it would matter though.

No, angled downslope as it is now, so the water doesn't hafta change
direction immediately after entering the drain - keep the flow going
downslope like it is now.

Anti-siphon vent is any type of air gap in the drain line; most of the
time (an exception could be having a sink and its drain filled with
water - blocked drain and sink full of water), an effective gap is
where the dishwasher drain is connected to the drain above the trap.
Some jurisdictions require an additional, physical break (gap) in the
dishwasher drain hose ABOVE the possible highest water level in the
kitchen sink (water can not siphon (nor run/drain) from the sink back
past the air gap). (See illustrations in Goggle's "images for

If you don't have either the gap or the up loop, you've been lucky. I

Wilton, it seems the up loop would serve the same purpose as the trap.
Again, since my unit works fine, I apparently don't need it.

2016-04-06 Thread WILTON via Mercedes
And I grew up in houses that had NO indoor plumbing. Little "outhouse" in
back yard was used "as necessary" and we took baths in a laundry tub in the
kitchen or a bedroom. I installed plumbing in that house for my mom in
1970, when I was 36.

Maybe I should just cut a hole in the floor and stick the hose down there
and just let it drain under the house. Many years ago we used to live in a
house in the country when I was a kid and the washing machine was on a
separate drain pipe that just went out back and drained into the pasture.

Re: [MBZ] Yet even more dishwasher talk

2016-04-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Thats how the washing machine at my parents house works except it drains into a
pipe that goes across the street and drains into a pasture. The pipe is clay
and occasionally they'll be taking hay off the pasture and crush the end of the
pipe. One year that made my parent's house flood really bad when the big spring
rains came. When the water subsided we couldn't find the pipe. Eventually Dad
poured a gallon of heavy cream down the drain, the cream was easy to find in
the pasture. About 20 years ago Dad got a section of iron pipe that would just
fit in the clay pipe, we shoved it up in there and haven't had trouble since.

Maybe I should just cut a hole in the floor and stick the hose down there and
just let it drain under the house. Many years ago we used to live in a house in
the country when I was a kid and the washing machine was on a separate drain
pipe that just went out back and drained into the pasture.

It is a vent thing that goes in the countertop and the drain goes up
through it to function as an anti-siphon one-way air valve to prevent
dirty water from being sucked back into the DW.  Had one in Houston,
never seen them anywhere else.  If the line is plumbed correctly there
should not be anything pulling back into the DW.

Air gaps are like antisiphon valves, determined by local codes.

Darned antisiphon valves are a requirement here, and they netball the kind that
if they are removed it trashes the fitting.

Anti-siphon vent is any type of air gap in the drain line; most of the
time (an exception could be having a sink and its drain filled with
water - blocked drain and sink full of water), an effective gap is where
the dishwasher drain is connected to the drain above the trap. Some

Re: [MBZ] Yet even more dishwasher talk

2016-04-06 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Maybe I should just cut a hole in the floor and stick the hose down there and
just let it drain under the house. Many years ago we used to live in a house in
the country when I was a kid and the washing machine was on a separate drain
pipe that just went out back and drained into the pasture.

Yep.

'Had a rental house about 30 years ago that had that problem. Tenants

had never said anything about problem with dishwasher. During my
inspection while they were moving, I opened the dishwasher and was "thrown"
backward gagging and gasping for air and nearly throwing up from the
terrible "state of affairs" inside washer. Garbage (kitchen drain pipe
stuff) had backed up into the washer and rotted. 'Had a helluva time
cleaning it, and, of course, plumbed the drain properly with an up loop to
underside of cabinet (well above sink drain level).

Well I will say this, in the other house that is now our rental property
the drain tube comes straight thru the side of the cabinet and runs up to
the disposal. Have not had these sorts of problems there. This one goes up
over the side wall of the cabinet and connects directly to the drain pipe
after the trap (which some say is ok others say no) close to the bottom of
the cabinet. It it quite a bit up loop I guess you would say since the
have it hooked into the drain down low instead of up high into a disposal
that we don't have.

Speaking of disposals, we had one in our other house on septic but there
is not one here. Wife wants one but I told her it would lead to having to
have the tank pumped more often.

Oh, one CAN physically plumb it downstream of the trap - like somebody on
the list already said that he saw (in his own house? 'don't remember), but
it is "dangerous" to do so. For possible health and other reasons, the DW
drain should discharge ABOVE the trap + up loop and/or air gap.

addition, there must be an up-loop or an air-gap fitting between DW and
connection to drain pipe, even if the DW already has an up-loop on the
side

of the DW.

Re: [MBZ] Yet even more dishwasher talk

2016-04-06 Thread WILTON via Mercedes
The up loop to possible highest water level in the sink prevents water from
sink draining back into the washer in case of a defective (leaking) valve in
the dishwasher.

Anti-siphon vent is any type of air gap in the drain line; most of the time
(an exception could be having a sink and its drain filled with water -
blocked drain and sink full of water), an effective gap is where the
dishwasher drain is connected to the drain above the trap. Some
jurisdictions require an additional, physical break (gap) in the dishwasher
drain hose ABOVE the possible highest water level in the kitchen sink (water
can not siphon (nor run/drain) from the sink back past the air gap). (See
illustrations in Goggle's "images for plumbing dishwasher."

If you don't have either the gap or the up loop, you've been lucky. I hope
you continue to be so.

Rich, don't know what the anti siphon vent is. Everything works ok on mine

Wilton, it seems the up loop would serve the same purpose as the trap.
Again, since my unit works fine, I apparently don't need it.
As I've said before, I may have just been lucky. Or it could be that my
whole house water filter helps remove chemicals, etc. I know my commode
bowls stay pretty clean and my water heaters (have two) are past normal
expiration times and are still working fine. Just sayin..
Kaleb, let us know how your quest goes. This certainly is a perplexing

Yep.

'Had a rental house about 30 years ago that had that problem. Tenants had
never said anything about problem with dishwasher. During my inspection
while they were moving, I opened the dishwasher and was "thrown" backward
gagging and gasping for air and nearly throwing up from the terrible
"state of affairs" inside washer. Garbage (kitchen drain pipe stuff) had
backed up into the washer and rotted. 'Had a helluva time cleaning it,
and, of course, plumbed the drain properly with an up loop to underside of
cabinet (well above sink drain level).

Yep.

'Had a rental house about 30 years ago that had that problem. Tenants had
never said anything about problem with dishwasher. During my inspection
while they were moving, I opened the dishwasher and was "thrown" backward
gagging and gasping for air and nearly throwing up from the terrible "state
of affairs" inside washer. Garbage (kitchen drain pipe stuff) had backed up
into the washer and rotted. 'Had a helluva time cleaning it, and, of
course, plumbed the drain properly with an up loop to underside of cabinet
(well above sink drain level).

Looking at all the pictures on his website, 1978mercedes.weebly.com, you
can see that he really wants it to go high. Maybe the low initial, no

This all makes me think our DW install is the best possible system. We're
fortunate in that the DW sits directly over the drain pipe from the sink. So it
drains directly down into its own trap, the drain pipe is maybe 2 feet long.
The water feed pipe is also under the DW although just off to one side. Handy
layout our kitchen...

More on this drain hose routing. It appears it should have a high loop to
prevent back draining I guess, so that's fine. What is a concern now to me
is the way it is plumbed into the drain pipe. They have it connected to
the pipe after the trap, not before it on the sink side. We do not have a
garbage disposal which is where they normally attach to.

this could be an issue and if a hole needs to be cut in the side so the
house can come straight thru instead of up and over. I am going to get
some of that dishwasher magic cleaner and run it thru first and see what
happens and may even relocate the drain line before installing the Bosch.
I should be able to return it since it's still in the box. At the very
least I want to attempt to figure out the problem even if I do keep the

Its ok to plumb it in after the trap. The DW drain effectively has
its own trap/

I think you may have found your culprit: drain issue.

Get a copy of the installation instructions for your current dishwasher,
probably a download online, and find out how the drain is really supposed
to be installed / plumbed. You may need to have a plumber take a look.

Take the drain hose off the disposer, cut a hole in the lid of a 5
gal bucket, stick the hose in there. run a cycle. You can tell if
it is pumping out at full force. You might also check the disposer
to be sure it is not restricting the flow.

Btw I agree it seems like it's not draining properly or is somehow
not doing something but it seems like it's got to be in the big pump
assembly but it does not seem to be serviceable.
