The AK-47 and AK-74 (like M-1 Garand, M-14, piston ARs, and many others) has an 
operating rod that runs from the bolt carrier to a piston somewhere near to the 
muzzle.  So the hot combustion gas acts on this piston, many inches forward of 
the bolt carrier.  So a piston rifle bolt carrier stays clean(er) and cool 
(er).  A true AR bolt carrier is literally washed in hot combustion gas with 
each shot.  They even make special tools to chip the carbon off the AR bolt 
carrier.  Even so, some ARs have run thousands of rounds without stoppage and 
have never been cleaned.

The AK is also built to much looser clearances so it is less vulnerable to sand 
and dirt fouling but also less accurate.   

Better is another matter.  All things being equal, a piston gun is heavier and 
more complex.  Also, the finish on an AK is rough (sharp edges) and hard in 
ungloved hands.  An AR is much smoother.

The real beauty of the AR-15 is simplicity, ease of cleaning (except maybe the 
bolt carrier), and standardization.  In theory mil-spec AR parts from and 
builder should interchange.  With quality (clean) ammo and lubrication (bolt 
carrier) they are very reliable.  Very few special tools are needed to assemble 
or maintain an AR.

High rate fire can make a barrel very hot, even glow in low light, soften 
rather than melt.  That's why many heavy machine guns are water-cooled and good 
light machine guns have quick-change barrels.  A hot barrel will erode quickly 
from the combustion gasses, resulting in loss of accuracy and muzzle velocity.

The M-16/AR-15 use direct impingement where some combustion gas from the barrel 
is piped directly to the bolt carrier; this is what pushes the bolt carrier 
back to cycle the action after each shot (eject the spent shell casing and load 
the next round).  As a consequence, the bolt carrier will also get hot and 
dirty, which can cause a jam, especially if it is not kept well lubricated.  
Still, most jams are magazine-related; high-capacity (greater than 30-40 
rounds) AR magazines are not reliable.

"perfecting " their technique. There's lots of info on the internet, so no,
I don't find a need for conspiracy theories.

I felt the blast from about a mile and a half away. My photo lab processed
the film from some of the first responders. One of my friends was the Doc
who amputated a woman's leg to pull her out of the ruble (he also set my
daughter's broken arm).

I didn't know anyone killed that day, but my kids had friends in school who
did lose parents. This one event does touch personal nerve endings.

Someone here posted a link that then led me to find this - a clamp on meter
that measures DC current. It's finicky about wire placement for accuracy,
but it does indicate the presence of flowing electrons, which is what I
needed most - is that device (aircraft encoding altimeter) drawing current
or not? Maybe not good for mounting in the dahs, but good for trouble
shooting. It's not cheap, cheap, but reasonable for the capability, at
least I think so.

I nearly did myself in with a taco a couple weeks ago. Apparently the name 
translates into "hot peppers with hotter peppers." I couldn't identify all of 
them but there was one dried red one that DESTROYED me.Normally hot food

The one time I was involved, it was just weird. He got in the car, drove 10 
miles to the medical complex, parked the car, came back an hour later and it 
wouldn't crank. Half an hour later, I show up, he's hungry, I take him to 
Burger King, we come back to his car, I open the trunk, he says 'let me try it 
before you get the cables', and it fires right up. 

My Cruze includes start-stop technology, with a pressure accumulator in the 
transmission and specially coated engine bearings. (I'd rather have an electric 
oil pump or an accumulator for the engine oil)
If the battery isn't full, it won't shut the engine off when you come to a 
stop. (remember the hall effect ammeter coil on the negative battery cable?)
If the battery's full, it stops the engine when the car stops, and it starts 
and the transmission is ready to go in the time it takes to move your foot from 
the brake to the accelerator. 
Everybody who's driven a start-stop German car says Chevy is much better. 
Flaws include a two minute time limit on start-stop, so it's happy to stop for 
2 seconds at a stop sign, but if you sit for more than two minutes at a RR 
crossing it restarts, and the fact that it starts if you take the car out of 
Drive. I roll into a parking space with the engine running, it stops when the 
car stops, then restarts when I put it in park, then stops when I turn the 
ignition off. I've found a workaround for that last infuriating restart, I turn 
the ignition off, then I put the transmission in park, and that way it doesn't 
start the engine while I'm reaching for the 'off' button. 

If I buy a custom tune, I'll just have them put a 2 second delay on the shift 
lever restart, and maybe a 3 second delay on stopping in the first place so it 
doesn't shut off for rural stop signs with no cross traffic present.

A buddy sent me a msg saying that girl who has the maybe Edizzel for sale

it offline (and movies too) and it is just sorta "borrowed" I guess.


My daughter unit got me listening to podcasts, there is an infinite 
variety of stuff out there for free, including back programs of radio 
shows.  Some have a bit of commercial sponsorship but it is not really 
intrusive.  I recently listened to Crime Town about Providence RI, which 
was excellent as I recall Buddy Cianci and his shenanigans, and S-Town 
about this small town in Alabama, which is excellent but might not be to 
all tastes.  Or local paper has a weekly podcast about the restaurant 
scene in town, I downloaded a whole bunch of them and listened to them 
all on my road trip in August.

Yuk!

For best life, a battery should not regularly be allowed to go below
about 13.2 V while on charge.

Sounds like Nissan needs to rethink its algorithm; battery life is more
important than a gallon of gasoline saved. And so is being able to start
the car on demand.

I listen to "traffic and weather on the eights" and a bit of news every day. A

I don't know how the amp meter that I put in the TD works but 
there is a device between the negative battery post and the body 
and off that is a very small wire that goes to an electronic amp 
meter which reads out amps being used as the starter turns but 
after that it always reads 0. Never shows a charge though the 
battery is being charged. The voltage meter part of it will show 
anywhere from 11-14.4 volts depending on what is on and if the 
motor is running or not. Sometimes with the lights, wipers, radio 
and AC on it will only show about 13.5 or so which I think is to 
be expected.

A current transformer is for AC only!
Automotive electrical systems are 12 V DC.



A pretty common approach to reading and displaying high currents
without having to put the ammeter in series.  In generator instrument
panels it was common to have an ammeter that was 0-5 amps with CTs of
250:1 or 500:1 driving it.  That way you could display output current
and have low current in the instrument panel.

Just don’t ever run a CT in a circuit with the secondary open.  It will
destroy it.

I just did all the pods in the dash of my 83 TD last week. Took a 
few hours. I just bought the rubber cups and rebuilt the pods 
that were in there. It was very easy, well other then getting 
them out and then in again. replacing the rubbers was a cinch and 
cheap too.

I'm thinking somebody didn't want it after her husband died. She's probably

Probably runs and drives, but since they cleaned/enhanced it, the listing says 
enhanced instead of runs and drives guarantee. If it didn't run and drive, I'd 
assume they would list damage - mechanical.

final bid price around $2000, which is about $2800 out the door plus towing 
charges and restoration.

There are a number of anti-anxiety medications... 

alprazolam (Xanax) 
clonazepam (Klonopin) 
diazepam (Valium) 
lorazepam (Ativan) 
oxazepam (Serax)

...that are most often prescribed. Librium (chlordiazepoxide), which is seldom 
prescribed anymore, would cause bizarre and even criminal behaviour when mixed 
with alcohol. I'm not sure about the current medications.

I know Valium and Xanax are benzodiazepines and the others probably are as well.
 
Also, a person with psychotic tendencies (genes?) can have a "psychotic break" 
and do things they wouldn't normally do.

Considering his long history of very normal behaviour, however, I'm leaning 
more toward the old standby, "Look for the money", so I think OK Don might be 
on the right track.

If he owed the hotels casino a large amount of money, couldn't pay it, and knew 
the hotel casinos owners would eventually "punish" him;
shooting up a venue on their property might have been his way of getting 
revenge "in advance" since he figured he was going to die or be seriously 
injured anyway, but who knows? It may have been a situation no one has thought 
of.

[MBZ] News Sources (Was Vegas)

I've decided to start looking at BBC's website for online news, they tend
to be a little more sober and it is interesting to get their take on U.S.
news.  It's also easy for me to spot their biases, as I subscribed to The
Economist for many years and learned a great deal about spotting the Brit's
bias against American conservative views.

A commonality amongst mass shooters has been SSRI use. I'm sure they work very 
well in some people, in others, not so much. In particular, males under the age 
of 30 or so (because their brains are still developing?). The youth aspect 
doesn't apply here, but perhaps SSRI's do...

Wilton's clutch was damaged in the collision and has too much play at the
tips of the fan blades.  When I checked it two days after install, it was
moving around enough that I thought the bolt had come loose and was backing
out, so I put the wrench back on it but found it nice and tight.  I'm
thinking I should just pull that fan/clutch off before it lets go
catastrophically and takes out the radiator.

My understanding is that no one has successfully replace a bearing in a fan
clutch, but maybe that could be done?

Good idea on the DOT 5 silicone brake fluid flush, don't think I have any
on the shelf so I'll pick up a can. It may be tough to make sure I get it
all out, but worth a try.

Why not refill Wilton's clutch instead?
Anyway, if I thought it was contaminated, I'd fill and drain it multiple times 
with DOT 5 silicone brake fluid, until you think it's pretty clean inside, then 
fill with the expensive silicone oil.

Last night after I'd had enough fun putting the Infiniti dash back together
(dash is still out, but is the next item on the list of steps), I took a
look at the old fan clutch removed from my '87 wagon to see about refilling
the oil.

The front of the clutch was caked with oil and dirt, no surprise as
obviously the oil had leaked out AND my engine has an oil leak somewhere in
front.  I cleaned all that off, and found that the bi-metal spring and the
pin it moves were both missing, and of course dirt has now contaminated the
oil passages inside.  How much, I don't know.  I stopped at that point, but
after thinking about it I have nothing to loose by attempting a re-fill.
I'll take off the bi-metal spring and pin from the clutch that came from
Wilton's 300D and use those.

GM now includes them as standard equipment. 
The computer tracks the amps in and out of the battery and manages charging to 
minimize fuel consumption. 
Nissan does something similar too, but I don't know if they monitor current. 
It's weird to hook up my Scangauge to a friend's 2013 Sentra and watch the 
voltage vary from the high 11s to the low 14s. And it's infuriating when, about 
once a year, it decides that it let the battery get too low and refuses to 
engage the starter. One time it did it on a Sunday night as he was leaving a 
ballpark in a bad neighborhood at 10pm. Took him over an hour to get a tow 
truck to jump start it, so he was there long after the safety of the crowd 
dissipated. He was not pleased. He bought a jump pack and put it in the trunk 
after that one. Another time he called me from the Dr's office to jump his car, 
and when I got there it changed its mind and decided to start. I think it was 
only a few months old that time.

For a car ammeter, you either have to wire in a series (or shunt) ammeter,
or use a clamp-on DC ammeter.  (Hall effect, not a transformer.)  These are
not particularly cheap.  Great to have as test equipment, though.
