Any conductive substance. So the head of the detector only
detects when it's moving. Iron is high resistance, so it is a
"low" reading. Copper and silver are low resistance, so they have
a "high" reading.

VM = Virtual Machine. Virtualbox has a free version. VMWare has

The only MSWin installs I have are on a guest. None of my Mac

Dragon is now owned by a different company: Nuance.

[MBZ] 1993 400E Stuff

2018-02-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
So I’ve finished an exhaustive review with the owner of the issues/fixes this
car needs. I’ve created a list of the bad and the good:

The bad:

Lower engine harness needs rebuilding
ASR light is on
Hood ornament (missing)
Headlight wipers (missing?)
Hood pad (gone!)
Cowl/lower windshield seal (degraded)
Third brake light (missing?)
Driver’s seat leather (bolster worn)
Left rear quarter clear coat peeling
Rear windows non-functional (one dead, the other with a broken regulator)
Sunroof adjustment (left rear corner is low but seals)
Headliner sagging in rear
Radio volume control is intermittent
Inside rear view mirror dimming tab is broken off
Distributor insulator on right distributor is cracked/chipped

The good:

Southern car, no rust or corrosion
Body is very straight, never been wrecked or damaged
Nearly new tires
Full suspension rebuild w/shocks/struts/tie rod ends/all links and bushings (OE
parts) last year (about 2k ago)
Upper harness replaced
Timing chain and guides replaced 15k ago
Brakes replaced (all) around 10k ago
Full documentation on repairs and maintenance from date of original
delivery/purchase
Dealer and independent shop maintained on MB service schedule for the entire
life of the car

None of this is significant, just a laundry list of almost all Martha sorts of
things. I’m sure there’s more that I’ll find once it arrives and I can give it
a serious once-over, but all in all it’s just a lot of piddly stuff. The bones
sounds pretty good and the provenance is spectacular. I saw the pile of
paperwork that comes with the car and it’s astonishing. They have a full set
of paper service manuals for it as well. Dang. I can’t wait to see the VMI on
this car….

Let the fun begin!

find little bits of corroded metal and get all excited. Sometimes I think
they've got to be pulling my leg, it'll be a washer or bushing or something and
the guy is convinced its part of a Tiger tank or something.
I've only watched a couple videos, can't get that excited about it...

Be careful where you scrape. Federal lands are a no-no, especially National
Parks. Former business buddy and long time 220D owner was a hard core Civil War
reenactment buff that lived in MD. He would scrape areas immediately outside
of the parks and battlefields, especially creek and river beds/banks. Amazing
stuff he found, like lead shot, buttons, belt buckles, etc.

You see lots of bluehairs on the beaches around here early in the morning
looking for lost stuff. They have a loosely knit fraternity of sorts that will
purposefully search for stuff people lost in an effort to find and return it.
That’s pretty cool.

Re: [MBZ] OT metal detectors

2018-02-03 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Welcome to geezerhood! I've seen the geezers in FL scraping the things
along the beach looking for dubloons or something.

I saw part of some show where yurpeens were scrounging around for 70 yr
old wah artifacts. Stuff I would have said was scrap at beast, they
saiid was collectible. Needed knowledge of stuff way beyond anything
normal to identify junk as something that may have value to someone.

So my dad has been prodding me for like 2 years to get a metal
detector. Use his money to buy me one. Birthdays, Christmases. Like
constantly. I resisted a long time. He’s 88 and basically just watches
tv all day. I guess he watches one of those shows or something. So I
finally gave in to his suggestions and got one.

I was just out by the garage checking it out and in about 2 minutes
found a screw and a hose clip/ holder buried in the sand. I was
getting other hits on stuff I couldn’t see but I must have been moving
it around as when I would scrape the dirt whatever it was would move
too. Rust bits or something like that maybe. I have to learn all the
settings and sensitivity and such.

Looks like it might be fun. There was a Waaa battle right on/near
my property so there might be some artifacts around. That could be fun.

Anyone else do this?

[MBZ] 124 cab

2018-02-03 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Just got done looking at the car. I looks a lot better than expected. It’s got
about 120k miles. The Garnett red paint is good. The trunk repair looks good,
can’t even tell there was damage. The seats have typical cracked leather. It
will need the top fixed and replaced at some point as the roof is frayed pretty
good with loose threads. The 104 engine looks very clean with no leaking oil
out the head. He seems very interested in an even swap for the 240d.

Boot between throttle body and lower intake, seals between upper and
lower intake, injector seals.

Minor leaks result in major running issues, less so with K-jet than
D-jet. D-Jet goes way rich with intake manifold leaks.

I did all that with the M117 in the SLC many years ago - lots of hard
rubber parts to replace with the two part induction system. It made the
difference between running and not running.

#4 as well.
I think the last time I watched a Superbowl was 1976. It was in a motel room
in Alamogordo NM along with a NC-141 test aircrew from WPAFB who got stuck in
"town" because the test schedule slipped. Alamogordo wasn't much then, maybe
now too. I don't recall if Addison was part of that deployment.
