yes, in RTW, They are not only smart enough to do that , but they can
actually push a clutch and shift gears. That is why a 240D 3.0 is the
most desirable 123.

Anyone remember when drivers were smart enough to adjust their own
temperature, actually move a lever to cause defrost or floor heat?

Ahhh so that's why they call them "the good old days". hmmm

True story.
In my experience the servo did a surprisingly good job, until it started to
leak coolant. An impressive concept (all mechanical) but poor implementation.
Unfortunately, the plastic shell and a seal were prone to leaks and cracking,
critical parts were not replaceable. Jim Cathy compiled a great deal of ACCII
data on his website for anyone interested:

I am not sugessting you commit fraud but when you are ready to insure this car
it would only cost your deductible to have the rear glass replaced. Ron Courcy.

Having owned a 116 for over 20 years, I respectfully disagree on several
counts. The interior in the 126 tears and breaks down more than the 116. The
plastic around the sides hides rust and cheapens the look of a classic vehicle.
The front headlights/park lights look too Japanese. And having driven both, I

Over an earlier 617 powered 126? More power, about the same or better mileage,
no valve adjustments needed, belt easier to mess with than the multiple belts
on the 617, starts easier in cold weather, the car has updated trim that is
nicer.

Sure that is a possibility but by now they have all pretty much been fixed. The
original 14 heads are ok as long as you don’t get them hot, but that pretty
much goes for any of the revisions either, don’t get them hot. My daily, well
weekend, driver has a 14 head but Curley has it rebuilt I believe when he had
it.

Re: [MBZ] OT: New gun

2018-03-04 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
It definitely came from the primer end (the wet powder gun is an inline not a
sidelock) as the powder closest to the bullet was dry while the powder closest
to the primer was wet. I made a blog entry on it:
http://curtsotherblog.blogspot.com/
which was interestingly one of my most controversial blog posts when I put it
on Facebook. I got a lot of guys who claimed I didn't know what I was doing,
none of them actually have a CVA Buckhorn though. I've got an idea that
somebody could make a rubber plug to go over the breech plug in the gun to seal
the primer in better but in the end its just a cheap plastic stocked gun that I
never really loved. The TC Renegade I bought to replace it has classic lines,
nice wood and a larger diameter bore for bigger bullets and thus more powder, I
just like it better. Typical story, the Renegade is what I should have gotten
in the first place...

Re: [MBZ] OT: New gun

2018-03-04 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Hi Larry,

CVA is an interesting company, they rode the black powder revival of the late
'70s producing a number of different variants. They went bankrupt in the late
'90s and reformed under the name Black Powder Industries (BPI) which is owned
by Dakar of Spain who made a lot of the CVA guns.

Unfortunately they're kind of low end, in my shopping I was looking
specifically for a TC because of their better reputation. I would have taken a
CVA if I'd found one but I'd have wanted it in the $1500-$200 range and since I
could get a TC for that price...
I looked around Gun Broker and it looks like the CVA Hawkens (Mountain Rifle is
one name they used) are running $200-$400. I've got an over and under .50
caliber that I overpaid for at $450.

As for shooting your gun you can make it kick as much as you want ;)
The nice thing about a muzzle loader is that since you're hand loading you can
tailor each load. BP is usually measured volumetricly, I'd start with 40 grains
(which is really 40 grains equivalent) and work up from there if required. That
should be a nice light load which ought to be good to about 50 yards with a
round ball. Track of the Wolf can set you up with measures, balls and patches
if you don't already have them.

One thing I do prefer from CVA is their powder flask as I've written about:
http://curtsotherblog.blogspot.com/2017/10/powder-flasks.html although I see
the Amazon link is now re-labled BPI...

was a gun I always wanted and I guess I talked about it a lot.  Anyway,
I really like it but have never fired it.  I suspect it works as it
should though.  I need  to take it to the range one of these days to see
how it shoots ;-)  Since it's a Black Powder gun I am hoping the recoil
is mild - had to stop shooting my M-1 Garand because of the shock it
gave my shoulder.

I should probably trim my collection a bit.  Based on the previous post
I guess it's safe to assume the value of a 50 Hawken by CV is in the
$300-$500 range?

There were several of the Hawkens at the show in the $300-$500 range. For a
hunting gun I think the Renegade is as good a gun or better since its plain
Jane aspect won't be damaged in the field.
Its sad that TC doesn't make traditional rifles anymore but I guess the market

I know that the later HVAC ACC II systems are designed to default to
defrost with any major fault of the control system, so I'd be
suspicious of the main push button unit in the dash, but that may not
be the case for this system. Somewhere I have a schematic for this system.

[MBZ] Nice 116

2018-03-04 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Well, I'll try to relate to my experience:

I asked him about the heat and A/C.
He said the A/C doesn't work.
This could be one or more of several things: fuses, compressor, low on
Freon, or the servo.<<<
He started the car and said that
the heat had defrost only.
This could simply be a fuse, I've had that or one of the vac modules, don't
really need to pull the dash. When the system fails, it defaults to
defrost just like the new cars as you need defrost at least to see to
drive.<<<
He said the engine runs great,
but puts out black smoke when it's cold.
This is usually the valve adjustment or the IP or the glow plugs not
getting hot enough. Not a big concern.
He said he never paid attention to the fuel mileage.
I always got around 24 around town and 28-30 on the highway. Great highway
car! <
He said he put in a used transmission after replacing the seals.
He said it works well.

The tranny can go bad on these. I ran mine with a flair between 3-4 for
over 12 years. Finally stopped shifting out of 1st. I put in a used with
95K on it and it's fine now. The original went about 420,000 miles.<

The servo can be a PITA. I got rebuilt ones from George Murphy. I've
gone through several over the 20+ years. I got so I could replace it in less
than 30 minutes, simple job. I don't drive mine much these days and basically
have it in storage. I'll need a new compressor when a start driving again.
I'll probably buy one of the eBay kits and have my Indie do the job.

Hope this helps. The car looks pretty good on the surface. Offer maybe $2500,
these old girls are becoming scarce.

Best wishes,

Roger

Re: [MBZ] 400E Fun -- Costco Michelins

2018-03-04 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
These Michelins now on the SD are Brit-made so not-quite-yurpeen.

I’m starting to think the left front suspension has gone wonky. I rebuilt the
suspension maybe 4 or 5 years ago and got it aligned. I’m wondering if the
rubber bits in the control arms have squeezed or deteriorated or something
letting the tire wobble a bit which caused the edge wear and belt delamination
at the edges. Or if the eccentric bolt loosened. I vaguely remember they didn’t
get one properly tightened in the initial alignment so I guess that is possible
and the camber is out of whack. That would probably need to be checked in an
alignment.

The servo does everything. It controls the coolant flow, it turns the
compressor on and off, it controls the vacuum to the flaps. It and the cc amp
control control the whole system.

I know that the later HVAC ACC II systems are designed to default to defrost
with any major fault of the control system, so I'd be suspicious of the main
push button unit in the dash, but that may not be the case for this system.
Somewhere I have a schematic for this system.
