Re: [MBZ] 95 diesel wagon

2019-07-07 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
This is actually a really good starting point for a 606 swap, but it would
be a huge step backward for me. I am pretty close to bolting an entire
shelf of v8 driveline and Finnish induction and fuel injection stuff into
my 87 wagon. Just need to figure out why my metric 10mm iso bubble flare
tool will not work on 3/8" stainless tubing! The OD is nearly identical,
but the tool die will not grab the 3/8" tubing. It is the oil supply line
for the turbos.

Re: [MBZ] Mobil Oil, engineering the finest non-answers ever read by man...

2019-07-07 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I was unimpressed with Valvoline in my Dodge Ram. Around 4,000 miles the
lifters would start to tick. Change the oil and it went away. With M1 it
doesn't tick even at 10,000 miles. That's with 5w20...
My VWs both get Lubrimoly, 5w40 for the Golf and 10w30 for my Jetta. VW is very
stringent in it's oil standards...
I wonder what's in Amsoil these days. I see it in more stores.

One would sort of guess that generic house brand full synthetic from
Wal-Mart or other similar vendors might be about as good and is a lot
less expensive.

I think someone on the list suggested buying synthetic oil from places
that sell to farmers as big farm equipment is not cheap to buy or repair
and the farm suppliers likely do not want to get a reputation for
selling poor quality oil.

What is the consensus?  Am I wasting money by paying for Mobil 1? Is a
lot of the price related to hype that no longer is valid?
I am using it in my wife's Honda Accord and my F150. Both  vehicles are
obviously gas engines. They both call for 5-20  and I try not to exceed
5K miles before changing oil.
I have never used synthetic in the old Mercedes diesel because I put
very few miles on it in an average year and try to make sure I change it
annually.

What would that involve?  She is taking it to shop Tuesday to get it
looked over.  I suggested first thing was to change the fluid and
filter, sent her that info.  I'll see what the shop says and try to
convince her easy things first.  She now has all this anxiety over it so
I have to overcome that.

Nissan did extend the warranty on these transmissions to 120kmi and 10yr
I think, her car is an 08 and has 150kmi so past both those.  They also
reflashed the control computers to do something with engine braking and
downshifting or something, I should find out if this car had that done,
or the tranny replaced.

One of the most popular Mercedes ever made I bought it to fix it up it
doesn't work I never got a chance to fix it up!! I don't know what is
wrong with it has 150,000 MI it does Crank! I don't think it will run
down the road very far! it needs to be fixed up! it is a fixer upper
I will trade this car for any car or small truck "that runs" and will
get me around I don't care what it looks like as long as it runs fairly
good. Or $3, 500. Year 2000 Mercedes SLK230 hardtop convertible. I
bought this car to fix up for my granddaughter, I was in a car wreck and
lost the only vehicle I had to get a round. That's why I'm willing to
trade it. It will take $300 to get the title

[MBZ] IAAI auctions

2019-07-07 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

Sunday evening fun...

So I thought I finally got set up with IAAI to bid on cars at auction
after putting in all my info and paying $200.  They screwed around the
other day finalizing it and I missed an E500 that I thought might be a
good deal to get some bits for this one I have, the suspension looked to
be sitting OK and the fender and doors I need were OK and would be a
color match.  It sold for $525, no telling what bidding would have gone
to but I was thinking my max would be $600.  Anyway...

This car was in NC, public can buy cars there but here in SC you need a
dealer or salvage license.  So that's a good deal.

So I'm looking at cars today, there is an 03 E500 like this one I have,
different color though, and anyone can bid on it it says.
https://www.iaai.com/Vehicle?itemID=32073516=12=True\.

it's kinda buggered up interior wise,, won't start, looks like someone
started to strip it or something so maybe it would go cheepcheep.  The
left front fender is smashed though, I need that, but it is sitting OK
and has pimp wheels that are probably worth something too.

But there is a notice that says "You cannot Bid/Buy.
- You are either a guest buyer or the status of your account does not
permit you to buy."

I sent them a msg which they might answer in a week, and it takes
forever to get through on the phone, to find out exactly what it is I
signed up for.

There's another one that doesn't have a sale date specified yet but the
metal looks OK and it is not collapsed.

Re: [MBZ] ebay

2019-07-07 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
In Georgia, yet another greedy politician state, they passed a law last year
that if you have more than $500,000 per year in internet sales, you are
required to collect tax on those sales. It's just more greedy political stuff.
We need to all stop carping about this stuff and start voting these greedy
joke politicians out of office, regardless of which party they represent. None
of them care about you and me, the taxpayers, it's become about getting more
money to spend at the federal, state, and local levels. Most of these tax
dollars do little good for the average taxpayer. Again, stop carping and VOTE.

Re: [MBZ] How to get off buggered up torx bolt?

2019-07-07 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
You might want to do a "Practice weld" of a nut and a bolt in a vice to get
a feel for welder heat setting and just how it works.
You will find the weld is nicely encapsulated inside the nut and contained
in the thread area, so you don't get splatter or sparks in surrounding
area... if you press the nut into position with the pliers firm and smooth,
then insert the wire into the thread hole and cover the thread hole with
the gas cup. I trim the wire to protrude about 1/4 inch, so when I pull the
trigger, the wire comes out, gas and fire comes on, and it makes the weld.
If you watch the nut heat up as the weld happens, you'll get a good feel
for when you have enough weld...

Disengage pliers and welder, quench the weld with water you should be
good.

Re: [MBZ] How to get off buggered up torx bolt?

2019-07-07 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
"IF" you have a wire feed welder, and IF you have access room to try this
trick, I've used it to great success for the "Impossible bolt removal"
Your mileage may vary, depending on how much access you have to make it all
work.

So:
Select a nut that will fit over the head of the bolt / screw head/ broken
stud/ etc. with the nut thread area within the margins of the outside
diameter of the bolt to be taken off. Hold the nut in place with pliers,
against the messed up head that will no longer hold a tool to remove it. I
find plain steel nuts work best, not galvanized.
While holding the nut in position, insert the wire feed into the thread
hole and energize the welder, welding the nut to the offending broken
bolt... While the nut and weld are hot and red, quench the weld with water.
This cools the bolt and the weld, while helping break any rust bond the
bolt has, and shrinking the broken bolt just a bit in it's hole...

You now have a hex nut to put a tool on, welded to the damaged "special
fitting head" that failed to hold the "special tool", and you can apply
considerable more force to break loose the damaged bolt.

You needed a new special bolt anyway, so it's a win/win/win Done and
dusted
Of course, use care to weld the sacrificial nut to the damaged bolt, not
the surrounding material. Most wire feed wire has a yield strength of
around 80,000 PSI, so if you get 1/4 inch of weld surface, you win the day.

Re: [MBZ] ebay

2019-07-07 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
It's complicated. But eBay will now collect sales tax, even between private
sellers and buyers.
One ASSUMES that the greedy States, having crafted these near-attainder bills
specifically for
eBay and Amazon, are watching them VERY closely.

Amazon has two operating modes. Where Amazon itself is the seller, via its
widespread shipping
centers, sales tax does apply. When it only hosts the listing, which is
actually sold and shipped from
a vendor, only now is it also collecting sales tax. Just like eBay.

I've had good luck with using the correct size socket.
A slightly smaller (larger for external) one will fit and work, but if

Good point.
The drive stub is longer than the bolt, right?
So if you can pull the whole axle, you should be able to lift the joint over
the bolt.

Is it torx (internal star) or e-socket (external star)?
I've had good luck with using the correct size socket.
A slightly smaller (larger for external) one will fit and work, but if one bolt
is too tight, it will bugger the star up. Heading to HF later to get a new set,
myself.

I'm not sure the bolt extractor will work on those.

The axle should compress enough, if you cut off the bolt head.

Open the differential and pull off the clip so you can take the whole stub out?

The way the bolts are in relation to the axle boot near it it is difficult to
get a good solid grip on the without it slipping. If not very careful you will
round it off. Any idea on how to proceed? I’m not sure I can just try cutting

I figured it was the seller's responsibility to tax every state they have a

If you list something for sale, what options do they give you for charging tax?

worthy investment.

Are the w124 lights on the wagon not the same as those that would have come on

give a modicum on protection. Installation is much the same as application of

Might also be buyer location, though now the state of washington is no longer
honoring purchasers from locals without sales taxes. Used to be you could show
your ID and the merchant would not collect tax. This year you pay the tax and
have to keep your sales papers so you can ask for a reimbursement
