WOW! I just a memory come flooding back. My mother had a 1981 Chevy Chevette.
It was a total piece of crap. She traded it in on an 82 Oldsmobile Omega.
This would have been about 1984 or 85. The dealership had this beautiful
108/109 that was dark green. I was about 11 years old and I knew then it was
the one I wanted her to get. But, it was a 1969 and the salesman said the
price was $6900. At the time, the Oldsmobile Omega was about $2800 so there
was no chance my Mom was buying it. I don’t remember which model it was. But,
I still remember the front of that car and how cool I thought it was.

If it starts reasonably well you can probably ignore the glow plugs for the
moment.
Setting the valves is a really easy zen kind of project that you should
probably do. If for no other reason than once its done you'll know its done.
The engine will probably be quieter and you'll get the opportunity to replace
the valve cover seal.
I was amazed the first time I set the valves "Thats it?" For some reason I'd
built it up in my mind. Its way easier than I expected and made a big
difference.

How much land do you need to cover with solar panels to make a reasonably
useful amount of hydrogen? When you turn solar power into hydrogen you throw

power houses.Shoot electric cars with lithium batteries make more sense than
hydrogen. Do you know how much hydrogen has to be pressurized to be a
reasonable motor fuel? You'd be driving around with a bomb...

And a further failure mode is an ALDA that is broken / leaks off the boost so

The pollution would be generated in producing the acres and acres of solar
panels that would be needed to produce enough useful electricity to produce
enough hydrogen so that one could drive 300 or more miles per week.

And then there is the business case which would probably show the cost per mile
driven to be about fifty times the cost of an equivalent internal combustion
engine vehicle. Thus the expression "A fool and his money are soon parted."

My advice is to connect the hydraulic lines ( hand tight) while the
mounting screws are very lose. Also, expect to get some oil on you.

On the driver's side firewall there is a switchover valve inline in the
tube that goes from the manifold to the ALDA. Make sure the rubber bits
that connect the hard lines to the switchover valve are airtight.
Otherwise the ALDA will not see the boost pressure and will not inject
enough fuel.

Ahh. Ok. Well, that is one of the parts under the hood that is all shiny and

am not sure at this point there is any reason he will lie to me. I have
already bought the car. He said he replaced the glow plugs this spring and
the nuts do look like new (or at least clean). He also said he had the valves
adjusted.

Thanks. I think it is definitely worth what I paid. If the question is
whether I would have paid $3,000 for one that had working a/c and great paint
and was cleaner with working odometer and gauges, then I would have opted for
the better one.

If I can’t find a shop here in Memphis that works on these old diesels, I may
have to figure out whether I have the time (and patience) to work on it. I’m
still a little surprised that two different shops that advertise as a Mercedes
repair shop, will not work on these old diesels.I didn’t specifically ask
them. But, I did ask my former BMW Mechanic where to go and he told me don’t
go to these other two places because they refuse to work on old diesels.

It sounds to be like you've gotten a very good deal for $1000. I can hardly buy
a car that runs and drives for $2,000 anymore. $1500 cars used to be my stock
in trade but these days those cars are just junk.

If its reasonably rust free your car is worth $2,000 here easy. The problems
you've reported are all relatively minor. Fix the most important ones (oil
pressure gauge) and then pick away at the little ones while you enjoy the car.

BUT, I take your point. I have no illusions about this car. I only paid

Well maybe I am misunderstanding.

Imagine standing in front of the car. On the left side is the air cleaner.
Near the back of the valve cover is a clear (ish) line that goes onto a nipple.
That line stretches over to the firewall on the other side and it goes to a
place where a bunch of other lines go. I disconnected it at the back of the
valve cover where it goes onto a small nipple . This is where the banjo bolt

bolt and cleaning it out.

The boost line often plugs up at the fitting on the back of the intake
manifold. There's a banjo bolt there which you should remove, clean, etc. If it
plugs there, the rest of the line will look relatively clean (because it is!).
You definitely need to disconnect it to clean it.

Yeah! Dump that 123 for a quick profit and get Dan and Jaime to find you
a finny or a ponton!

Or go for broke and get something bigger. I think I recall that you are

I was going to say a BLACK Mercedes, but maybe in Memphis, it would be
better if it was a WHITE Mercedes just because of the heat.

The boost line often plugs up at the fitting on the back of the intake
manifold. There's a banjo bolt there which you should remove, clean, etc. If it
plugs there, the rest of the line will look relatively clean (because it is!).
You definitely need to disconnect it to clean it.

It sounds to be like you've gotten a very good deal for $1000. I can hardly
buy a car that runs and drives for $2,000 anymore. $1500 cars used to be my
stock in trade but these days those cars are just junk.
If its reasonably rust free your car is worth $2,000 here easy. The problems
you've reported are all relatively minor. Fix the most important ones (oil
pressure gauge) and then pick away at the little ones while you enjoy the car.

The US headlights would have been required to import back in the day. It
has those aftermarket wheels where the chrome peels off around the rim,
leaking air on a regular basis. My SLC had those when I bought it - not
cool. Of course, it shouldn't be too hard to find the proper bundts for it.

Re: [MBZ] I'm pretty sure this is more entertaining ...

2019-10-03 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
That’s how I was describing the difference between the M119 and M120 to the
eldest boy the other day. I was telling him about that really nice S600 that’s
for sale nearby, and he was wondering why it would be any better than an S500
as far as performance.

We were on the interstate at the time, and I asked him if he remembers the get
up and go from a stop his former S420 had.

 “Yup.”

“OK, so we're going 70 mph. Think about that sort of performance when you put
your foot into the car at 70 mph. That’s the difference.”

I drove the SL600 the other evening.  It was a bit cooler and it was

like a turbine and it feels *really" good, then when it hits 4000rpm it
is like a supercharger kicks in and speed just builds and builds...  I
left my driveway and hit 80 before I really realized it, I even

We told them to stuff it.

Re: [MBZ] 123 Diesel Plan of attack

2019-10-03 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Looks like a good plan, though I think I'd swap 6 and 7 - the vacuum system
also controls parts of the ACC system - it will be easier to determine what
fixes what if the vents flaps are working.
Regarding #11 - a different cluster doesn't mean that it's odometer is
working either - the plastic gears slipping or breaking is a common issue.
Probably more effective to just fix yours. (The odometer died in the 300D
2.5T about 30 miles south of Wichita when I bought it from you).

Re: [MBZ] 1985 300TD Accumulators

2019-10-03 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Compressed gas cylinders can be shipped, but they're ORM-D material so you
can't ship them on airplanes. No hazmat fees, just need to label the box on 3
sides "ORM-D compressed gas", same as a can of pepper spray, refrigerant or a
box of CO2 cartridges.

Loaded small arms ammunition is ORM-D cartridges.
Loose gunpowder and primers are hazmat, UPS charges a hefty fee for that stuff.

Tom Hansen quoted $232.00 per accumulator for OEM.  eBay has some
aftermarket listed for around $160.00 for a pair of them.
