I've been sorta shopping for a new truck, the tin worm is getting into ours,
and I noticed that lots of them have that now. Our 2010 RAM doesn't but the
2015s do.
I'm also skeptical of them on the one hand but on the other hand you don't have

This is why most people just buy a new car and make the payments. They
cannot or will not do the work themselves and cars have become better
but much more complicated. Many parts, if they are available have become
silly expensive.

New sportline springs and spring pads are hundreds of dollars. Swaybar

and leaking; they were about 1300 for the parts alone. I had previously put
rebuilt aluminum brembo 500e front and 300mm 600sl rear vented calipers,

I even got OE diff mounts from overseas as they are backordered for the v8
cars. Rear wheel bearings had already been done thankfully, so I didnt have
to buy that tool or tackle the job, but I would have if they had not been
done. Necessary? For peace of mind, yes. What is that worth?

OE door seals for the car are over a grand alone.

Multifunction stalk switch. Ignition tumbler. Over 100 each oe, excluding
labor.

New headlights (old plastic housing tabs had broken off), magnetti marelli,
euro style, 450. No labor included.

New dash was $250 and a lot of labor, with all the hvac pods at hundreds of
dollars, new climate control unit, evap, compressor, dryer, hoses.

Swapped a black leather interior in; 800 for the donor 95 wagon. Imagine
paying that labor in DC or any other major city.

You can argue that none of it needed to be done, but when the subframe
starts banging on the underside of the car taking off from stoplights, and
the ball joints on the shocks are creaking, it is time. And after pulling
the subframe out, there is no way I am putting it back with any old stuff
on it. I am not driving a car with a cracked dash, creaky suspension or a
subframe that provides automatic 4 wheel steering. The ignition tumbler has
to work well, the brakes have to be brakey, and it should steer like new.

This doesnt include the 500sl junkyard diff and side bearings and seals,
plus labor. I swapped a wavetrac lsd carrier in, which was over a grand for
the part. I was quoted 2700 for that job alone from Leistung. That's why it
happened on my bench. My old diff was spewing metal fragments into the
fluid and had far too much play. It was also 185mm rather than 210.

Anyway for the 123 mentioned, the axle shafts, rebuilt steering box, and
nla sls struts weren't mentioned. And the tranny sounded kind of hinky.

I am at a point where I sort of want things maintained like a certified
aircraft. I am not driving them and waiting for something to fail. If you
want new car type performance, a lot of stuff has to be made new. For the
daily drivers, I pay someone to do it. For the hobby cars I tackle it as
time allows.

So how does this feature work?

Are the parking brakes normally on with no electrical power (fail safe)
and then must be turned off by an electrical signal to a solenoid or some
such?

What happens when the electrical signal or power to the electric parking
brakes fails? Are the parking brakes slammed on immediately?

(Note: That is how the emergency/parking air brakes on heavy trucks
works. If the gladhand on the red air line comes off the trailer, the
trailer brakes are slammed on -- which is why you have seen a sudden
appearance of two pairs of black skid marks on the road and why it is
so important truckers make sure their gladhands do not come off.)

Having trailer brakes slammed on is bad enough, what happens when the
rear brakes of a car or truck are slammed on? Would you Joe-average-driver
be able to handle the situation?

[MBZ] Still hate Toyota?

2019-11-01 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
While Toyota was an industry leader in hybrid vehicles in the 2000s with
the popular Prius, the company has lagged in developing fully electric
vehicles in recent years, focusing instead on churning out gas-guzzling
trucks, Hecht added.

Toyota this week* filed a motion to intervene on behalf of the Trump
administration in the case Environmental Defense Fund v. Chao, which
centers on whether California should have the ability to set tougher
greenhouse gas emissions standards for cars than the federal government.*

In particular, the automaker said it supports the administration's argument
that California is preempted from setting the tailpipe standards by the
1975 Energy Policy and Conservation Act, which gives that power solely to
the Transportation Department.

"This statement is Toyota trying to do damage control and change the
narrative, when really they are siding with the White House on attacking
California and lowering emissions standards," Baker-Branstetter said.

The electric parking brakes in our Subaru have no automatic function - if
you don't turn them on, they stay off, no matter what. If you turn them on,
you HAVE to release them before you can drive the car. No, shifting
into/out of gear makes no difference - they work just like manual brakes.

Brazing diesel tanks is not safe, either. I've done it, and it sucks.
My secret was to stuff a hose from the exhaust pipe of the lawn mower

ones coming out the pinholes would light like little candles. Scary.

2019-11-01 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
DC area got another 1.5" of rain last night plus high winds and a power
outage on my street caused by a blown buried transformer buried in my front
yard. It took several crews a couple hours to disconnect and retrieve the
old transformer and install an above ground box for easier access in case
of future needs. The crew chief told me that these are a lot safer for the
crews - fire hazard is reduced.

I really like the current GM Small Gas Engine. (1.4L in 2016+ Cruze, 1.5L in
2016+ Malibu, and some 3 cyl variants that I don't think are sold here) Light,
efficient, and the turbo versions are over 100hp/liter.

If I were to do some drivetrain swaps, I'd do OM602 turbo in 2.3-16 chassis or
I'd get a 1989-1994 Metro and stick the front subframe/suspension/drivetrain
from a Cruze/Malibu in the back of it.
I'd like a fun car, under 2000lb and without power steering.

I changed a 240D with an automatic transmission
to a 300D (NA) with a manual transmission

when I was in grad school and the automatic transmission broke most
severely deep inside. I decided to change the vehicle instead of
spending $2500 on a rebuilt transmission.

I changed the differential, the half-shafts, the drive shaft, the
transmission, the flex plate to a flywheel with clutch, the engine,
the radiator, all four brake calipers, added a clutch pedal assembly
with master and slave cylinders, and probably other stuff I don't
remember at this moment.

2019-11-01 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I was telling Angie tonight I've just about finished my first two boxes of
steel shot 12ga shells. Last year I fired probably 25 shots and didn't hit
anything. This year is a bit better, 20 or so shots and I've bagged one duck
and two geese.
When you're as bad as I am a hit becomes a huge success.
When Angie and I first started dating and I taught her to shoot she was almost
immediately better with a shotgun than I was. That was a huge bruise to my 20
year old ego. Fortunately I'm much better with a pistol and especially a rifle
than I am with a shotgun...

Re: [MBZ] You dont find these no where!!!

2019-11-01 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Well, if we include brand X, in 1975 or so, I transplanted a frod 289
into my 170 C. I. U100 (Rag top/doors) Bronco.   Not a bolt in project.
required cutting, bending, fabricating, welding the body for clearance,
relocation of the footfeed, flame wrench to cut off the motor mount
horns from the frame, fabrication of new motor mounts, scrounging a left
exh. manifold that would work , and fabricating a custom exhaust, as
none of the V8 stock parts would fit in the 6 cyl body.   Yep, v8 got a
different body!

Same summer and more or less simultaneously, did a transplant in a
friend's 62 frod van.   Was supposed to be a simple engine transplant
from a 66 frod hangover van.  when we found different bellhousings
(different generations of frod drivetrains) we ended up transplanting
the whole 66 driveline, which involved cutting and fabricating on the
body also.  Quite a bit of flame wrench work.  When we got the engine
and trans in, we found neither driveshaft would work.  At that point it
was sinpler to cut out the rear ends and springs from both, and put the
66 driveshaft and rear ind into the 62.   THe 65up differential was much
more robust too.  the junky little falcon car spicer diff used 61-64 was
notorious for failure.

2019-11-01 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
In fairness, digital electronics systems aren't that easy to diagnose,
especially without the special (dealer) test equipment. Even with the test
equipment, many pros end up swapping the wrong part$ (or so I hear). There's
no substitute for experience.

The airbag light in my 08 Outback started coming on intermittently a year or so
ago. Not knowing how serious this was, I bought a iCarsoft unit (code reader).
The iCarsoft said the problem was the passenger airbag indicator: on-off LEDs
integrated in the map light assembly. Glad it wasn't a real problem like
actual air bags, sensors, or the computers.

Turns out this indicator fault is common problem and several folks on the
legacygt.com site had already isolated and fixed it. The fix was simple:
reflow the solder on a specific cracked solder joints on the tiny circuit board
that holds the LED lights.

and joe sixpack doesn't have the slightest idea how to diagnose or fix,
so he takes it to a stealer, who charges him thousands for swapping in
parts that weren't needed until they put in a new cluster if that is
where said board resides.    or $ to solve a problem that would
cost the mfgr 2¢ to have done right in the first place, or cost the
owner a quarter and some time.

Ah, sounds very familiar. I spliced the diff end of the MG drive shaft onto
the GM shaft to connect the tranny to the MG rear end. I did swap out the
MGA 4.30:1 diff for an MGB 3.90:1 diff for a higher top end. Welded up the
exhaust from the heads to the tail pipe, etc. No room for the starter
solenoid without cutting the frame, so I built a lever mechanism to engage
the starter, and a push button to spin it. Lots of other hacks that I don't
remember right now - took a year to complete (working and going to school).
The MG u-joint at the diff was the weak link in the system. I think I
replaced it a good half dozen times. Also went through several water pumps
- they couldn't take the rapid change in RPM ---

Re: [MBZ] You dont find these no where!!!

2019-11-01 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Speaking of transplants:  I always contended a 114/115 rear subframe
could be made to work in a 110/111 body.   I did end up with a 115
junker 12 years ago, but was not able to deal with getting the rear
subframe out.  Benefit, would be moving fmor a single (center) pivot
rear axle (Think 60 VW Bug) to fully independent rear suspension we know
and love on 123, 126, 116, 126, 107 etc, and newer.

since in the one track experience I had on the 200D, the rear axle
buckled under and rear-steered the car sideways, I've been very careful
about keeping the axle nearly straight and not corning too hard with a
light load.   On the track we had to remove everything from the trunk,
and that raised the rear of the car and make the rear axle halves slope
down to the wheel.  THat set up the physics that made the outside wheel
forced down and jacked up the rear of the car leading to the sideways on
the track situation.   With my toolbox and the jack, spare tire and
lugwrench in the trunk, the axle was more near straight, and the car
will corner well.    The "Track safety" regulations (nothing in the
trunk) led directly to creating an unsafe situation.   Fully independent
rear suspension would eliminate the problem that led to being crossways
in the track.

[MBZ] OT Anyone here ever been to the Wheels through Time museum in Maggie Valley NC?

2019-11-01 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
The wheels through time museum is heavily oriented to Hardly Davidson,
but still looks very interesting.   They are raffling off a 1936 Hardly
61 Knucklehead.  It was HD;s first attempt and OHV engines.   My dad had
one.  I have a copy of the picture where he won a hillclimb in 1941 on
it, competing with the top names in the country.   I also have a poster
for the hillclimb one of his old gang gave me at his funeral.  The
Hardly was sold soon after, and those funds and his winnings went toward
building a house for him and his new bride.    I've often wished he had
kept the old Hardly.

We are thinking of being out that way this winter, so the museum is a
possibility going out, or coming back.   Anywhere BUT on I-95!   Don't
wanna fall in with the wacko new yawkers and joisie crowd heading to
invade Flahduh.
