[MBZ] Interesting tidbit

2021-02-12 Thread Craig via Mercedes
One of the pieces of literature I got from O'Reilly Auto Parts recently
is a brochure highlighting Dorman's "OE Fix" series of parts, which are
re-engineered to solve problems with factory parts.

In that brochure, I learned the differential covers for Toyota 4Runner,
FJ Cruiser, Tacoma, and Tundra vehicles are welded in place. The problem
with the factory parts is they are made of thin-gauge stamped steel,
which lets rust eat away faster than other areas.

Their fix was to make a replacement cover with thicker steel -- not what
I would consider a lifetime fix, but since there were no replacement
covers available before they introduced their part, I guess it's an
improvement.

I do, though, find it amazing any manufacturer would weld differential
covers in place!

Don't forget to put the go pedal to the floor and crank until it starts or
quits. My 83 240D would start pretty well down to about -10F. That first winter
I drove that car we had a week of -20F every frickin night. That was when I
figured out that a 400W inverter would power the block heater...
Interestingly the Pisten Bully starting procedure is copied from MB which is
unsurprising I suppose with an MB engine. The ASV is strange and starts harder
if I hold the go pedal but it does want to be held at high idle for a minute or
two right after starting.

[MBZ] 240D cold weather starting

2021-02-12 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
My $400 240D I bought has been sitting outside not started for over a week. It
is currently 13 outside and for grins I wanted to see if it would start. I did
not figure it would but I glowed it once then as soon as light went out I
started cranking it. It started hitting and slowest all cylinder started
firing. Amazing.

Re: [MBZ] OT heat pump aux heat

2021-02-12 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
After going to Lowe’s last night, 2 farm stores, a hardware store today, and
finally a 2nd Lowe’s I was finally able to find a breaker. I finished
installing it a little while ago then cranked up the thermostat so the aux heat
would kick in. I let it run for about 20-30 minutes and it didn’t trip.
Hopefully problem solved.

Re: [MBZ] OT heat pump aux heat

2021-02-12 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
If you were to plot the current draw vs. time on the resistance heater,
I bet it's quite a bit higher in the first few seconds and drops off as
the elements heat up.

Maybe put in a "slow trip" breaker designed for loads that have an
initial surge of current close to the limit, but then drop off. They
will still trip on a prolonged overload or short.

My local locksmith was able to make a duplicate key for my Focus,
including the RFID programming, the caveat being that he needed the
original key to "clone" the RFID chip from.

If I hadn't had the original, he'd have had to get the key pattern and
the RFID data from Ford, and I don't know what that would entail. I
might have had to go to a Ford dealer and pay $$$.

Interestingly my Nissan doesn't have RFID in the ignition at all, and
it's newer than the Focus. I'm using a plain jane metal duplicate key on
it, as the boys have lost all the originals.

2021-02-12 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
We stopped one night when the weather was getting bad out in the middle of
nowhere West Texas in some little town with one diner and this little notel
motel. I swear by the time I got checked in I had heard the girl’s whole life
story, the history of the town, and everything about her dog. It was like $35
for the night and the food at the diner was fresh and made right there. It was
actually quite pleasant. Nothing around but cotton fields and prairie.i believe
that is Llano Estacado country out there.

Re: [MBZ] OT heat pump aux heat

2021-02-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’m confident out payback would have been 5-7 years at most. The original owner
cheaped out on the HVAC in the place, as it was really undersized. As a result
if was horribly inefficient and expensive. A lot of stratification between
floors, poor distribution, etc., all resulted in gas (heating) bills of $200+
in the dead of winter, and nearly as much additional for electricity when
cooling in the summer.

The actual price for the whole system would have been around $18k, but Federal
and state spiffs would have made it about $11k out of pocket. Indiana had a
really good energy creedit setup for geothermal at the time. As I mentioned,
you even got a credit on your property taxes for it, too.

The regional differences are interesting, I've never lived anywhere that didn't
have hydronic heat. The apartment we lived in had natural gas but everywhere
else has been oil.Our new farmhouse is oil fired hot air. If I were going to
live in it in the winter I would explore converting to hydronic.

Re: [MBZ] OT heat pump aux heat

2021-02-12 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Our geothermal heat pump has been doing fine so far - it's 12°F here now -
hasn't turned on the resistive strips yet. It's supposed to get to -7
Monday so that will be a real test. The house is a "modular home", code for
a gussy'd up double wide, 1600 sq. ft., and leaky.

Re: [MBZ] Made it back with the CD

2021-02-12 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Driving back all the way from west Texas, it was not too bad out west as nobody
is out there so not much traffic. When I got back to Oklahoma and the
interstate speed limit is 75 normal speed 80, myself and most people were
driving about 60-65, with semis just flying by. I guess they did not realize
they were basically driving on a layer of ice for the most part. Of course saw
lots of Texas and Florida plates flying past as well. Saw several semis and
cars off the side of the road upside down. No pileups though.

Re: [MBZ] OT heat pump aux heat

2021-02-12 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Our wood stove is a Jotul 118 which is a big stove, it'll accept 24" wood.
It's in the basement which is usually considered a negative but our house is
small enough (just over 900sqft) that it heats the whole place pretty well
although the bedroom stays pretty cool. I set the oil burner thermostat at 62
and then use wood to bring the house to 69-70 all day. Its back down to 62 by
morning but I can have it back up to temp within 2 hours.
This week I've been teaching, for that I sit on our enclosed porch and run one
of those oil filled electric heater. There is hydronic out here but the circuit
is shut off. I figure for only 5-6 hours a day it doesn't make sense to run the
oil heat. With the door open the heat from the rest of the house gets in too.
Usually start the electric heat 2-3 hours before class and shut it off 1 hour
before class ends. Figure less than $1 a day...

We have a Jotul wood insert which is outstanding.  Its been cold, under
freezing for a few days for the most part.  I heat with my minisplits and
the wood insert, but the large 3 zone split stopped working earlier this
week.  This meant we were running with one 12k split on one end of the
house and the wood stove.  Still managed to keep the living room in the low
70s.  It would fall into the 60s overnight after the insert started to burn
low.

The failure of the Fujitsu was interesting... I self installed, so assumed
no warranty.  Initially the failure showed on the indoor units as no
communication to the outdoor.  The outdoor unit showed no power to the main
board, but was supplying power to the indoor units.  I found a blown fuse
on one power supply board, soldered on.  I ordered a new fuse from
McMaster, checked the obvious places I could for a short, then soldered it
in when it arrived.  The unit powered up then, but wouldn't heat and gave a
code for the outdoor unit fan after a while, which wasn't spinning.  More
testing showed 400V DC (!) to the fan connector and open circuit on the fan
motor.  I ordered up a new fan and installed it yesterday and all is good
now.

Cost me about $300 to fix.  If I did it by the service manual, I would have
had to replace the power supply board, the main control board, and the
fan.  Probably would have been a $2000 repair if I called someone.

But its a nice reminder how powerful the Jotul insert is.  Worst case, I
can run the oil fired steam heat still, but it generally costs a fortune.

[MBZ] oel filters

2021-02-12 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I ordered 4 Mann oel filters from FCEuro for the 05E320 and 05ML500 and
they are the same filters.  Even with shipping they were cheaper than
Amazon and a bit more than half what Advance Auto would charge locally
even with the discounts. And they have "free" replacements if you send
them back.  I don't know what it would cost to send back a nasty old
filter but there you go.  Maybe those post office flat rate boxes are
cheap?  I should check it out when I get around to changing them again.

I probably should have thought about other stuff I needed to save the
shipping but my brain is too lazy this morning.
