Re: [MBZ] OT: Electrical question

2021-06-07 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I wonder how old the rest of the plumbing is? Those galvanized fittings
look like new (at least on the outside). We find that the current crop
of galvanized fittings that come from the far east don't last long on
our setup out at the lake.

On 6/6/2021 7:33 AM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote:

IIRC I've already told you guys about our plans to rebuild the house up north.
We just returned from a 2 week trip up there. On this trip I wanted to spend
time evaluating the house and making a plan of attack. One of the things I
looked at was the water
system.https://photos.app.goo.gl/UPi2hLpSjBRTs65U6That's the pump and pressure
tank. That pump is at least 40 years old, maybe more:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/zyNUxCMYGi4eTMnv7
https://photos.app.goo.gl/6KqRFghXQA2DUe5P9This is the electric that controls the pump,
the one that actually runs the pump is the rear one, the front one is the pump for the
cistern. The "soft water system" as the previous owner says. That system is all
disconnected and hasn't been used in years.
It's hard to tell from the picture but the switch is about 8 FEET off the
ground. I can just reach it if I stand on the platform the pump is on. You can
also see that the switched being used is nestled right in the pipes...
Obviously a stupid location.
I'd like to move the whole dang thing down about 4 feet and out from the wall
about 2 feet which would put it about 2 feet above the pump and maybe a foot in
front of it. Do any of you geniuses see a reason I shouldn't? I'm going to
eliminate the soft water wiring entirely, we don't need it...
The pump works, in the third picture its turned off but I pushed the lever up
and the pump started. It built about 55# of pressure and shut off. When the
pressure gets down to about 10# it turns back on. We've got another pump so
if/when this one fails I can just swap over. It's loud but I can't complain
about it otherwise...

Re: [MBZ] OT: Pressure washer

2021-06-07 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
You might want to reconsider taking the paint off with the pressure
washer. Is it lead paint? I was involved in a case where the painters
had to re-landscape a whole yard because they stripped off old paint
with a pressure washer and contaminated the whole area with lead.

On 6/6/2021 2:12 PM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote:

Another "exciting" story from our trip. I hauled home Dad's pressure washer yesterday.
Its a Troy Bilt 2700psi with a 175cc Briggs "Commercial" engine on it.
As with everything that sits in my dad's shed I had to evict a mouse nest. Then
put new o-rings in the sprayer part. Amazingly my Harbor Freight o-ring set had
some to fit. Also amazingly a generic hose washer with some sil-glide brake
lube sealed nicely, no leaks on either side.
The engine obviously wasn't stored well, no fuel flow at all. I had to take the
gas line off and blow carb cleaner through the inlet. The needle was covered in
a tar like substance. I didn't know gas in anything could smell worse than from
an old snowmobile. I don't remember when he got the sprayer but I don't think
dad has ever run it, so its probably sat 5 years or more.
The dang thing is so safety-ficated it's terrible to work on, plastic covers over the
carb, no choke control "it's automatic!", no fuel shut off... I got it so it'll
pop if I squirt some carb cleaner into it but it won't stay going. Of course you have to
have water in the pump all the time which is a PITA. Tomorrow I'll see if I can come up
with a fuel shut off so I don't have to lose all the gas every time I do anything. I
think it's not flowing gas into the carb again.
Oh well, ideally I'll get it going and use it to take the paint off the house before we paint it in
July. Its got a variety of nozzles from "delicate" for things you don't want to ruin to
"sandblaster" for things you do...

Re: [MBZ] Did I get the deal of the century? 642 rod knocking magically cured?

2021-06-07 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I have zero tech information of this particular engine, but, like many late
version diesel engines, it has computer controlled injectors, which use
high pressure oil controlled by an electrical device, controlled by an
engine computer. IF that is the system, in principle, this car uses, I
posit as follows:

Oil change place put in wrong oil, or failed to seal up the oil system
somehow. Owner drove the car till low oil, or improper oil, caused it to
run "weird" and he stopped, heard knocking, and checked oil. Scared the
hell out of him because it sounds really bad, so he put it in the "wait for
Kaleb to buy list" then came Kaleb.

My thoughts... One or more injectors seized internally due to lack of high
pressure oil to open and close injector, or wrong oil... The term is, I
believe, "Stiction" [likely wrong spelling ] ... regardless, the end result
is that injector[s] are no longer firing "in time" as ordered by computer..
thus, making a huge knock sound, because the engine is running "out of
time"..
Big scary sound goes away suddenly because the injector[s] that were "stuck
for lack of lubrication" finally got oil enough to open and close, more or
less when they should.

Following this line of thought, the oil change guy used 20W0 gas engine
oil, it got sucked out because it was the wrong oil, guy put the right oil
in to replace the empty dipstick, but never ran the car. Kaleb ran it
longer than he did, so it finally got enough oil to the high pressure oil
pump to run the injectors, and noise went away...
Maybe but... the damage is done to injectors which seized internally.

Can't really tell from the pic of the panel. If it is just the pads you
have to use the computer to disable the SBC so it won't go crazy when
you mess with them, so that can get a bit spendy without the majik box.
Would not be a bad deal at all for $3500 or less -- I'd probably push to
more like $3k promising dire costs for dealing with it, see what else
the nannies are saying.  car looks pretty nice and the 03 has a 722.6 so
better than the 722.9

That is because shipping from China is subsidized by the USPS.
Also known as our tax dollars.

YOu buy the car online, fly to Japan, drive it around seeing the sights,
park it in a long term lot, fly home. Six months later, go back to visit
and have your car waiting for you (with a dead battery). Perhaps rent it
out to other tourists, like an Air B&B for cars ---

2021-06-07 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I replaced a water heater that died (the day before I got hit by a truck while
riding my bike, a cold shower DID NOT feel good) that had one of those remote
control devices on it, wired into the power lines to the WH. I deleted it as it
never seemed to do anything although I guess it might be hard to tell given
timing and use and capacity of the WH.

I opened up the device and it was some simple thing with a coupla relays and
small circuit board.

2021-06-07 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
The wife had let the GL sit for about a week  because it had a flat
while I was out of town.  Actually it probably only was sitting for
maybe 4 days.  Battery was too low to start it.  I noticed before that
it seems like it turns over slower than I think it should.  I hooked my
small hand held jump box up to it and it cranked right over and fired
up.  She then drove it around with no issues.  It has since been sitting
for a week and same thing, wont start.  I figured battery is dying so I
went to pull it and date on battery is 12/20, so its brand new.  I have
it on the charger now so I am guessing something is draining it.  Or
perhaps it is weak even though its new.

Also, last time she drove it she says she got a airmatic warning
message.  WTF?  Literally everything is new.  I checked codes and it
comes back as compressor run time too long or something like that.
Battery voltage was still too low but I ran the test and compressor did
not build enough pressure.  Result is to replace the compressor.  I am
going to rerun the test after I got a full charge on the battery.  It
has an Arnott compressor which I believe is liftetime warranty.  I would
imagine that is just for the owner that put it in?
