I have an Echo 2-stroke weedeater and I replaced the carb with a Chinese
knock-off after it wouldn't run right. Been OK so far. Cheaper to just replace
it than mess with it. The quality of the replacement didn't seem noticably
different from the original.

Thanks. What's with materials failures on newer MB engines? The balance shaft
gears on M272, and apparently the cam sprocket on M271.

Am I wrong or did this kind of stuff tend to be overbuilt if anytning on the
older engines?

Re: [MBZ] bent pulley on mower

2022-09-07 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Actually, the pulley is a top pulley that connects the top belt to the
engine, and a bottom pulley that runs the blades.  It is the top pulley
that is bent and apparently it is an assembly that appears to cost close
to $300.  In other words, I really need to try to get this one bent back
into closer to flat position.

I’m still on the hunt for a good quality metal cabinet for the Flagstaff garage
with no success.

Oldest son (who is out for some R&R) went with me on my weekly trip to NAU’s
surplus shop in hopes they might have something. Lots of nice industrial
strength metal shelving units, but no doors on them. They also had a lot of
really heavy duty lateral file cabinets, the tall ones that are about 5’ 6”
high, but that’s a less than ideal approach, even if they’re only $35/each.

I had hoped that maybe Costco would have something, but their choices for
garage storage are pretty pathetic. I guess the old rich white people that
frequent Costco don’t have a need for such things. Sam’s has some, but they’re
pretty pricey.

I’ll just keep hunting…

Upon further review, avoid like the plague, unless you are up to rebuild the
front of the engine.

This guy thinks are vacuum hoses that fail and that causes the computer to
retard the camshaft timing. Which in turn causes timing gear issues.

You’d have to scan it to figure out exactly what the issue is. Some mech might
have just said this, or the seller doesn’t really understand. A scanner is an

Anyone know if a "camshaft sensor" (possibly crankshaft sensor?) is am involved

In addition, I don't see the gauge of steel listed on their webpages.

Re: [MBZ] Tool Boxes

2022-09-07 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
In this case they were gift gift cards, so I didn’t have a choice of stores.

The HD in Flagstaff kicks some serious ass, I love it. Always well stocked,
staffed, and never crowded. The ones in Florida, at least the ones around my
house there, suck big time. Dirty, poorly stocked and staffed, always crowded
and difficult to get in/out of.

In Florida the Lowes is right across the street from the HD, and a lot easier
to get in/out of and well stocked/staffed.

No Lowe’s in Flagstaff. Two HDs in a city of 76k people, though, and they’re
only about 10 minutes apart if you have to go to the other one, which I’ve only
done once. Demographics for a Lowe’s in Flagstaff don’t work out, closest one
is in Prescott, about a 90 minute drive.

Interesting,

I accidentally ordered some stuff to the wrong Home Depot awhile ago, had
bought it on gift cards. I canceled the order and they promptly issued me a new
gift card via email. Process took about 15 minutes.

I don't really like either Lowes or HD but of the two I prefer HD.

Something to note if you’re a Lowe’s shopper - if you use a gift card to buy
something for pickup at the store, and the order gets cancelled as mine did, if
you don’t physically go to the store where the pickup was scheduled for within
24 hours of the cancellation your gift card balance will be refunded through
another gift card that has to be mailed to you from corporate. That means your
funds are unavailable for a week or two.

I found this out the hard way when I saw a roll around box at a nearby Lowe’s
in Indiana and ordered it for pickup. Apparently when they went to pull the
order the one they had in stock was damaged, so they cancelled my order. When I
found another a few days later and went to another Lowe’s with gift card in
hand, they wouldn’t honor it. It took a phone call to corporate to figure out
what was going on.

Lesson learned.

Did you know the Quinn brand tools are identical to the lower cost Pittsburg
pro line, just different labels and a higher price tag. Next time you are in
there take a look at the socket and ratchets and compare, you will see what I

Re: [MBZ] Tool Boxes

2022-09-07 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
And I encountered the same issues you had with availability. It was hit or miss
for some time, I think I got my top box in FL and the bottom roll around cart
in Indiana.

I have a Craftsman "ball bearing" cabinet I bought on sale back in 2010 or
so and its been excellent, stands up to frequent use and full drawers.

I've been researching more professional cabinets lately and have found
Lista, Vidmar, and Rousseau cabinets to be very nice. They're not cheap,
but still a fraction of what Snap On boxes cost, which seem to be more for
show than anything else. Its worth searching these names locally and see
what you find. Its all custom built, but you might find some really good
used pieces for a good price.

The prices of these have skyrocketed lately. A year or 2 ago you could buy a

I believe the Craftsman boxes I bought were their medium to high build - they
had a lower end offering that was black or a dark color of some sort. I didn’t
even look at them. Mine are the classic Craftsman red and black. Wheels are
substantial, ball bearing drawer slides, etc.

I have never owned a (commercial) roll around tool cart/chest, so this was a
first time purchase for me. I have a wooden roll around cart I built about 30
years ago that is still in service in FL and will certainly outlast me.

Re: [MBZ] Tool Boxes

2022-09-07 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
I bought a Craftsman top and bottom set at Lowes last year for most stock
of airplane parts so they aren't scattered all over the hangar. IIRC, it's
the 40" wide x 24" deep model. It has nice large wheels - bolted on.
I bought a Husky from HD this year to consolidate my mechanicing tools, the
fabrication tools are still in the odd collection of old boxes.
I compared Craftsman, Husky, and HF boxes. Note that they all have two or
three levels of build - I call then lite, med., and heavy duty. You have to
compare the similar builds, not a lite of one to a med. of the other.
HF did not have 24" deep drawers in the medium build boxes when I was
looking, and the Husky was about the same price with 24" deep drawers.
Also note that stock varies frequently these days, the box I wanted was not
available in OK when I was ready to pull the trigger. I waited about a
month, then one appeared at my local store. I quickly bought it on-line
with local pickup to lock it in. I had been looking at a different HF box
earlier, decided it might be "the one", but it is not even in their catalog
now.
Go and look at them all, decide what size and features you want, then go
home and build a spreadsheet and compare what's available.

The Harbor Freight toolboxes aren't bad these days. I have one that's about 20

All the reasons you pointed out are reasons to go with the HF boxes versus the
huskies from hd or whatever lowes carries.

The HF boxes are 14ga steel IIRC and have much better wheels actually bolted to
the frame. Most other boxes are 18ga and have the wheels riveted on. Do a
Google search and you will find a lot of videos showing the difference.

Re: [MBZ] Tool Boxes

2022-09-07 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Regardless of the brand name or the color, you are looking for just a few
items that make the box good quality.
1. Sheet metal gauge. For a good roll around box that will carry several
hundred pounds of steel tools [it adds up fast] you want at least 18 gauge
steel.
2. Drawers all have roller suspension, so the glide open and closed when
loaded with tools. Also, good boxes have little latches that latch the
individual drawer closed when you push it in. This keeps the drawers from
all coming open when you roll the box across the floor or driveway.
[instant wreck as the weighted drawers all slide out.
3. Capacity to hold your tools all in one place. [ I solve this problem by
having 4 boxes 40" wide X 20" deep X 5' tall [top + bottom boxes stacked]
All exactly alike, except for using my label maker to neatly identify what
is in each drawer, [get one, they are wonderful].
4. Wheels. Do NOT chince out on wheel quality. You want nice big, heavy
duty, easy to roll when box is loaded wheel sets with foot operated locks.
Wheels with grease zerks will make you happy also, tool boxes need
maintenance to keep serving you well, like greasing the drawer slides, also.
5. Locks.. good ones, you know why every time you buy more new tools.
6. My choice was to buy multiple boxes all exactly the same size, because
the all cover the same footprint when I roll them into the tool locker
[extra security for a sizable investment.] Your individual needs and choice
may vary.
Hope this is helpful.

Best for what, exactly? My brother, retired professional mechanic, swore
by his large Mac Tools boxes. I think he has three of them. They were
ex-pen-$$$ive. But they work well, are well warranted, and, most importantly
for him, were secure when locked. He had 10's of thousands of dollars into
his tools, and didn't want them walking away on him.

If I had such a box, that would not be such an issue. The house itself is
the security, vs a box that lived in a 'public' space like a commercial shop.

I saw that Harbor Freight was pushing boxes of this sort. I don't know
anything about them, really, except that they were a lot cheaper than
the pro gear.
