Then go there in winter or winter/spring and see what it’s like. Like
November—April. Cold, damp cold, nasty, snow, slush, mud, sleet, rain, wind.
Lovely weather.

Nice in late spring to fall. Maybe think about 2 places, be snowbirds

Re: [MBZ] A Short New England Trip

2022-09-27 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
I’ve flown in to Portland Jetport a couple of time. I remember it being nice
and easy.

I reckon I need to make some kind of loose itinerary. We don’t necessarily
want to see/do touristy things, but we do want to “leaf peep” if Mother Nature
complies, do coastal Maine, do a non-Maine beach, and whatever else will give
Mrs. Bob a good taste of New England. She informed me today Manchester was
rated as 24th best place to retire by some website, right behind Ann Arbor ,
MI.

A neighbor mentioned an eight day bus tour they went one right before Covid.
Started in Boston and spent eight days wandering around CT, VT, ME, CT and they
said it was awesome (full disclosure, they are much less adventurous and active
than we two are).

Mrs. Bob is getting slightly excited about this trip. She has adamantly
maintained we need to take trips to places that are on our list of potential
places to live in retirement to check them out because she is really serious
about moving out of the Hubs of Hell when our elder care days are o’er.

Jean Parker Shepherd Jr. (July 26, 1921 – October 16, 1999), often
referred to by the nickname Shep,[1] was an American storyteller,
humorist, radio and TV personality, writer, and actor. With a career that

Both. My Dad was an executive vice president for the commercial lending
division of General Motors until the summer of 1969. “Yellow Motors Credit” as
it was known then. And later an executive VP of commercial lending at
Merchant’s Bank in Indianapolis.

Sanibel was a bit of a hole back then, sort of shabby. The locals didn’t want
anyone on the island, and they kept people off by charging (at the time)
exorbitant tolls to cross the bridge from Ft. Myers. Sort of like what Key West
was at the time, too. Locals who didn’t want the touristas around, somewhat
shabby, nothing of any real interest or attractiveness that would draw them,
either. About the only thing Sanibel was known for at the time was being a
great place for shelling.

Gene Shepard lived there. We used to run into him at the general store on
Captiva, but I didn’t know the guy from Adam at the time. My folks told me who
it was some years later, but I remember the guy. It wasn’t until I was a
teenager that I read any of his books, and this predated the Christmas Story
movie by decades.

It was a very low key sort of place at the time.

Hard telling - it’s mainly served by Southwest as I recall, so I would think
they would be the best carrier to use for it. They used to have a direct form

Still a great airport to get around the area with.

Not so much big cities…autumn leaves, the beach, smaller town life.

Re: [MBZ] A Short New England Trip

2022-09-27 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Manchester (MHT), Hartford (BDL), Providence(PVD) and Portland(PWM) are all
fine airports.

Manchester used to have a direct to PHX but I don't think that exists anymore.

If you’re going anywhere in New England, Manchester is by far one of the best
airports to fly into. Easy to get in/out of, more or less centrally located,
etc., etc. I wish it had been a choice when I traveled to the Bawstun area on
business. Any chance to miss Logan is a good one. I can always remember driving
through the Sumner tunnel while talking to my sister in law (who lived in
Haverhill) whenever I went there - you would always lose cell service, of
course. I am pretty sure they have a cell in the tunnel nowadays, though.

Sure you spelled that right? When I search for it Google corrects it to
“Skiatook”, which is pretty close to Okie Acres.

[MBZ] Amarillo is a real sh*t hole town

2022-09-27 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Arrive at my first hotel yesterday and check in. Go to my room. It’s a handicap
room. That’s odd, I always book a suite. Go back to from desk, inform them I
think they gave me the wrong room. They moved me to a suite. Later on, front
desk calls asking my name. I tell them they say thanks. A few minutes later,
they call back asking for my reservation number. Wtf? I have over 100 nights
this year and this is a first. They then ask me to come to front desk. At this
point I’m getting pissed. This was just after returning from the nightmare at
the Big Texan. Apparently they checked me in under somebody else, so I had
their room which apparently is why they first sent me to a handicap room. Geez.

Get to my next hotel tonight on west side of Amarillo. Upon entering my room, I
find an old boy just sitting on the couch in my room. Wtf? I say excuse me I
guess I have the wrong room. Nope, it was the maintenance guy taking a break in
MY ROOM. Of course the room smells like ass. I checked to see if it appeared
the bed had been slept in or the toilet had recently been crapped in but
everything else appeared to be in order so I decided not to raise hell about
that.

Pulled chair out to sit down and do some work. A crap load of either toenail or
fingernail clipping was laying in the chair. The room otherwise was not cleaned
all that well but bed appears to be fine. I have had nothing but bad like in
this crappy town.

If you are bored, lookup Shatook, OK on the map. I flew out to Amarillo
yesterday, drove there and back today, and fly back home tomorrow. Amarillo is
the closest other place I go to that town. Next time I will probably just drive
it and hit them on the way back. You have not seen desolate until you have
driven around the Texas panhandle or far western Oklahoma.

Looks like the crosshairs are no longer centered on Tampa.

 Key Points
 1. Landfall has been shifted southward to near Port Charlotte tomorrow
 afternoon.
 2. The threat of significant wind and a large storm surge into Tampa has
 diminished.
 3. Hurricane threat and storm surge threat has increased considerably for
 Ft. Myers.
 Our Forecast
A reconnaissance plane investigating Ian is finding that the hurricane is
quickly regaining its strength now that the center is back over water.
Some additional strengthening is likely over the next 24 hours prior to
the center moving ashore tomorrow afternoon.
Ian has been tracking east of this morning's forecast. On its current
heading, the center will move inland west of Port Charlotte in about 24
hours. The farther south landfall means that little weakening is expected
prior to landfall. We have shifted the landfall point southward to Port
Charlotte in this advisory. The farther south landfall means that Ian's
center will likely emerge into the Atlantic near Daytona Beach early
Friday morning. It may have time to intensify some prior to moving inland
on the middle Georgia coast Friday afternoon. We do not think that Ian
will regain hurricane strength during that short period in the Atlantic,
but that cannot be ruled out. Once inland into Georgia and South Carolina,
Ian should quickly weaken to a remnant low by Saturday.
Ian's slow movement near landfall on Thursday will result in prolonged
strong wind and very heavy rainfall for the Florida Peninsula. By the time
Ian moves northward into Georgia, however, it should have ingested plenty
of dry air, resulting in significantly lower rainfall amounts over Georgia
and the Carolinas on Friday and Saturday.

Having spent a fair amount of time at my parent’s former house on Sanibel, if
Ian goes over Sanibel and Captiva there won’t be much left when it’s gone. My
folks owned a place on Sanibel from the late 1960s until the early 80s. They
bailed because it was getting too commercialized - in other words, they were
letting too many people over the bridge. Lots of great memories from there. We
would fly down on the weekends in the winter, we probably spent about half of
the weekends in the wintertime down there. From Indy to Talladega for a bio
break then across the Gulf to Sanibel. There was a grass airstrip in the middle
of the island, and we would just taxi down the road and park the Beechcraft in
front of the house.

I think the house was about 10-12 feet above sea level, so it would be
inundated by this I suspect.

Re: [MBZ] Bullseye

2022-09-27 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Maybe.

Ian is going to sit out in the Gulf right along the coast and “churn” for at
least 24 hours with CAT3 (or higher) winds. While storm surges might not be as
bad, damage from high winds will be much worse. We’ll have much higher rainfall
since the north side of the hurricane will make landfall near us, as the west
and north sides of the eye wall generate far more rain, as much as 20” (or
more.)

Again, all storms “wobble”, so you’ve got to respect the cone. We’ve seen some
pretty wild last minute changes before, so nothing is a sure thing until just
before it happens.

Re: [MBZ] Bullseye

2022-09-27 Thread mitch--- via Mercedes

Looks like the crosshairs are no longer centered on Tampa.

Key Points
1. Landfall has been shifted southward to near Port Charlotte tomorrow
afternoon.
2. The threat of significant wind and a large storm surge into Tampa has
diminished.
3. Hurricane threat and storm surge threat has increased considerably
for Ft. Myers.

Our Forecast
A reconnaissance plane investigating Ian is finding that the hurricane
is quickly regaining its strength now that the center is back over
water. Some additional strengthening is likely over the next 24 hours
prior to the center moving ashore tomorrow afternoon.
Ian has been tracking east of this morning's forecast. On its current
heading, the center will move inland west of Port Charlotte in about 24
hours. The farther south landfall means that little weakening is
expected prior to landfall. We have shifted the landfall point southward
to Port Charlotte in this advisory. The farther south landfall means
that Ian's center will likely emerge into the Atlantic near Daytona
Beach early Friday morning. It may have time to intensify some prior to
moving inland on the middle Georgia coast Friday afternoon. We do not
think that Ian will regain hurricane strength during that short period
in the Atlantic, but that cannot be ruled out. Once inland into Georgia
and South Carolina, Ian should quickly weaken to a remnant low by
Saturday.
Ian's slow movement near landfall on Thursday will result in prolonged
strong wind and very heavy rainfall for the Florida Peninsula. By the
time Ian moves northward into Georgia, however, it should have ingested
plenty of dry air, resulting in significantly lower rainfall amounts
over Georgia and the Carolinas on Friday and Saturday.

[MBZ] W116 adjustment of power windows

2022-09-27 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
Good afternoon,

I'm noticing on my W116 that the power windows, particularly the front
passenger-side, "twist" as the are raised/lowered. Meaning the window tips
forward during raising and backward during lowering.

Is there some kind of adjustment of the vertical rails in the door? I see
there's inboard/outboard adjustment for the vertical rail, but I don't see
a fore-aft adjustment.

Or, put another way, how do I get the window to stop twisting like that.

Thanks,

D.

PS: the genuine front driver's side regulator is NLA, passenger side is
still out there but I assume not for long. My replacement aftermarket
lifter for the driver's side lasted about two weeks.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Dinner

2022-09-27 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Ding, Randy gets the award!

Canada goose shot last Saturday.

The meat is way more like red meat then any other poultry. Angie sears it in a
cast iron pan and then finishes it in the oven. These breasts were from an
older goose so they were kinda tough. We should have pounded them a little
before cooking.

A lot of people don't like the flavor of goose but it's because they overcook
it. These were a little more rare than we normally do but it's much better to
go a little rare than to ruin the meat.

A few weeks ago I put a bunch of goose legs in the slow cooker and made tacos.
The meat gets really tender after 4 hours simmering.

I suspect that’s the case.

I know that one of the early years (and Kleb can probably identify it) has no
lock cylinder on the driver’s door, just the IR receiver for the remote. That
means if the driver’s side door handle fails, the only way you can get in and
out of the car (lock/unlock) is with the hard key in the passenger door.

I know because I looked at one of these a few years ago and that was an issue.

I’m preparing for some fun car seeking next week, maybe even over the weekend.
Not only will there be hurricane cars, but people will be needing cash for
repairs. I’ve already got my eye on a couple FB marketplace opportunities for
exploitation. Show up with a roll of dead presidents and people are likely to
deal.

No wild boar in MA. Interestingly NH has some but they're all escaped domestic
pigs. To hunt them you need a pig farmer to claim they were his and then give

Re: [MBZ] Bullseye

2022-09-27 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I like that!

Yeah, there’s only so much you can do. If my sister in law was home we would
button the place up, pack up things and head over there (she lives on the east
coast over by West Palm) since they won’t get any of the storm. Then it’s just
a matter of getting back after the storm to assess the damage.

The models are rarely “exactly” right, and a shift of a few degrees of the path
in one direction or another can make a substantial difference in how bad things
get, so I’m not ready to freak out just yet. As a long time local weather
forecaster that has a list of rules says about safety during a hurricane, the
last rule being “Rule #7 - Don’t freak out unless I’m freaking out.” It’s so
well known around here that a local brewery has a “Rule #7” beer.

The models are now showing a slight shift to the south of us, and that’s god
news for us, sort of. If we end up on the north side of the eye we’ll get more
wind, but it will be of lower velocity since the eye may be farther away.
Again, this stuff is all pure speculation until a few hours before landfall.

Lets give the game one more day, I'm not surprised nobody has gotten this one
yet.

I'll give 2 hints, one is that I shot the critter here in MA. That rules out
elk, moose, caribou, bison, etc.
The second hint is that none of the guesses so far are even in the ballpark.

Re: [MBZ] Bullseye

2022-09-27 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I went out yesterday morning to top off the fuel in both cars and to get some
additional bottled water. It was quite busy, but not too crazy. For grins I
filled up a spare propane cylinder, and business at the hardware store was
quite brisk, they were on their second refill of their 2000 gallon tank that
day.

The locals, that is, those of us who have been here for a while, are already
prepared. The “new” people here are the ones freaking out and getting all
crazy, mainly because they either haven’t prepared in advance and/or are
whipped into a frenzy by the media, or both.

Depending on how close the eye wall gets to us, we could see sustained winds
well above 100-120 mph for a period of time. The farther we are from the eye
the better.

I’ll be putting up storm panels on the windows this morning, then I’m pretty
much done. At this point we’ve got a couple weeks of power, food and water, so
we’re good as long as the structure survives. I’ve got to get the chainsaw out
and check it, and I’ve got a number of tarps in the event there is any roof
damage. If we can keep the envelope of the house intact it’s all good.

Our utilities are underground and fed off loop feeders, so there will have to
be some pretty severe damage to the infrastructure to take us completely
offline.

Gotta get some breakfast and get to work before the fun begins..

Somewhere around 40-50 I think.
Cruze has bearings sized for 153hp. And it gets 50mpg at a steady 55mph,
in a car considerably wider and 50% heavier than a first gen Rabbit. I
think a 4sp Rabbit got about 50 highway, on fuel with a higher energy
