My Cruze had a fantastic method of increasing wear and tear.
It shuts down when you come to a complete stop with the brake lights on
and the car in gear. For bonus stupidity points, it restarts when you
take it out of gear.

Imagine the brilliance of this:
1. Pull into parking space and stop.
2. Engine shuts down.
3. Put gear selector in park.
4. Engine starts up.
5. Turn ignition off.
6. Engine shuts down.

So to counteract that, I'd kill the ignition before putting it in park.
That confused it and made it beep at me when I got out and shut the
door.

So finally I gave up on the whole start-stop function.
1. Start engine.
2. Place gear selector in manual.
3. Hit the gear up button 5 times to select M6.
When in 'manual' mode, start-stop doesn't engage. And in this particular
car, manual mode just allows you to select a maximum gear. In my mom's
Malibu, manual is truly manual, if you select M3 it starts out in third.

Re: [MBZ] PC

2023-09-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
For a desktop machine I'd go with something like this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/175874607658?hash=item28f2f18a2a:g:T9EAAOSwkwNk8HHB=enc%3AAQAI0FOsKwtEQnKBXTX%2BPQptGXq1l4%2FhmNsQzAnJTMJFwkKCP29Oi4k4WMHZaMlqj%2BUo3mGDbClGcnLxUxUBicauQGvy596OAt31SFCLIvzhrRNCqFf%2FdrxC7gDnkKtoCUXp6e%2B%2F0veOEUhJriSbegQfJiPxa1n%2FaitqJSJIIX3U%2B8wLdO9J9sIajWIQp5hAm95EA7scTe7yhvtwqdyprc9IUnbb30M43H7d2Y3cgBKgWF1w8wim6NsuIbZ3oAVVRzw2s98nExo7t2bUpWJFbUMioJI%3D%7Ctkp%3ABFBMtOfyrtVi

32GB RAM, the only thing I don't like is that its only a quad core processor.
Probably plenty for a normal person looking to just do some regular computing.
There are a bunch of them on eBay, some with more processor, less/more RAM,
bigger/smaller drives. Pick one that fits your budget.

For reference until last spring Angie's business ran on an HP XW8200 from
pre-2005, as in I don't really remember how old it was but it can't be newer
than that. I remember getting my boss to buy it. It was the first machine I
ever used with SATA as standard. Cost around $3500 as I recall.

Desktop or laptop? What do you want to do on it? Web surfing, email, gaming,
streaming?

Most consumer systems are commodities, clustered around common configurations.
What you want to use it for really determines what to buy.

Installed SSD back in machine, same thing. Also, I have noticed that even

Back to SSD, tried connecting it to a laptop and it shows the drive which

Point of the post. Thinking it’s time for a new system. Should I just

Re: [MBZ] PC

2023-09-18 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
My wife has the Costco M1 MBP, I'm keeping an eye on it. She's been happy so
far,
she bought it after her MBP (Intel, hot) fried its GPU. (A not-uncommon event
for a
certain vintage MBP, and the big reason my son's college MBP was the 13" model,
which doesn't have a separate GPU. Longer battery life, cooler, and less
likely to
break. But not so good for games, and old enough not to be a particular theft
target.
Aww, too bad little baby's school computer sucks for games. Yeah, that was no
accident on my part...)

> to jump to 16GB would have nearly doubled the price.

Yes, ouch. 16GB is a bare minimum, yet is the HW maximum. That's not
attractive.

> application memory warning, which the OS handles quite well, so they clearly
> anticipated the issue.

I imagine. I can see Apple's HW guys going "you ain't gonna see anything more
than 16GB for
awhile, if ever", and the SW guys getting serious about more efficient and
effective use of RAM.

> I run (ran) VirtualBox for my EPC and WIS. They don’t have a solid release

This requires QEMU-like technology doesn't it? Currently all other VM
environments are just
mapping environments, relying on the native CPU to do all the heavy lifting.
NFG for cross-
architecture emulation.

> these last Mac Pros like ours are still quite strong when it comes to the

Arguably the best machines they've ever made. In terms of capability,
expandability, and
effective longevity. I'm sure I'll miss mine, when the time inevitably comes.

> I’ve got the VESA adapters for them [30" Cinema], which are now pretty much
> unobtanium.

You referring to Apple's mDP-DDVI adapters? I have three. The last one was
for my son's
13" schoolwork MBP, so he could drive the big monitor when at home. Since he
dropped out
he rarely uses the laptop, the monitor's connected directly to his Windows PC
for gaming.
(He upgraded recently, from a MP 5,2 that booted to Windows 10, to some used
gaming PC.)

He likes that just fine!

It comes installed on the HD from the seller. I clone it to the SSD, make sure
it boots, then format the HD. I use AOMEI Backupper for the cloning. YMMV. FYI
- Curt turned me on to the HP workstations.

I suppose I could 'force' work to provide a VM farm, and the 4 developers
could share it, and whatever feeble chromebook you wanted to carry around
would be all you'd need. But, that's money to be sure, and now I need
continuous
connectivity in order to do anything. Timesharing big iron again? Not really
what
I'd prefer. I prefer local development resources, and only connecting, through
whatever tin cans and string are necessary and available, when transmitting
final results.

My boss is using Starlink. It works beautifully. Except when it doesn't. Not
really to my taste. My 802.11-whatever is a lot slower, but more reliable and
predictable. Sometimes my boss calls me, and has me apply the changes
he made, because he can't get a full upload done from where/when he is.

At least he’s predictable!

I got my Maverick in the spring, and the next winter I hit a patch of ice on a
curve in our street and slammed into a very large oak tree. Totaled the car.
After a few months to recover financially I “graduated” to a Beetle
convertible. A few years later I got my Mom’s hand-me-down 1970-1/2 Ford Pinto
hatchback in bright orange. Drove the Pinto for several years and then sold it.

Ford stood me up on the recall for the gas tank “shield”, causing me to lose a
whole day of work sitting around waiting for them to install the part, which no
one was able to find. I refused to go back, and they were so rabid about that
recall that they eventually had the car flat bedded to the dealer and back to
my house when it was done.

Jerks.

Re: [MBZ] PC

2023-09-18 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Correct on the M1/M2 Minis. Mine is a refurb with 8 cores, 8GB of RAM, and a
512GB SSD. Not my ideal setup, especially coming from a machine that had pretty
much unlimited (128GB) RAM, but I was balancing a price/performance approach.
It cost me around $650 and to jump to 16GB would have nearly doubled the price.

I’ve had one instance where I got an application memory warning, which the OS
handles quite well, so they clearly anticipated the issue. I started running
the activity monitor and keeping half an eye on it to see who the hogs were.
Mainly Safari. So I’ve changed my browsing habits a little, but it hasn’t been
an inconvenience.

I run (ran) VirtualBox for my EPC and WIS. They don’t have a solid release for
Apple silicon yet, so I use my 13” MacBook Air to run it when I have to look
something up. A bit of an inconvenience, but it’s not like I’m in the EPC every
day, either.

I’m all about keeping legacy hardware running when possible, especially when
it’s something as powerful as a Mac Pro, but I couldn’t deal with some of the
issues I was having and still consider it a viable platform for work. It’s a
bummer because these last Mac Pros like ours are still quite strong when it
comes to the hardware.

"My name is Dan, and I’m a 30" Apple Cinema Display hoarder."

I have six of them. Four in Florida and two in Arizona, with two of the FL ones
being backups. I see them come up on Craigslist around here on occasion and
they’re usually priced reasonably. I’ve been giving serious thought as to how I
could set four of them up together. I’ve got the VESA adapters for them, which
are now pretty much unobtanium.

I've got an M1 Macbook Pro. Gotta say it's 100% improved from the previous
generation.

Before this I had a butterfly keyboard touchbar Mac. The first laptop I ever
got that wasn't as good as the computer it replaced. I'd had an early Retina
Macbook that was the bee's knees. I loved it. Sadly 5 years on the road
murdered the logic board.

16GB RAM, 10 cores, so not so great for VM support but I've got a VM farm with

Keyboards, displays, and mice also.  On the road I make do with the bare
laptop, but that's not very satisfactory, and drove the dock installations for
the places I was most likely to go.  I don't have a spare MBP, but am using
a mini as a backup for it.  It's fairly portable, to the dock-bearing locations
(home, camper, cabin) anyway, and vastly cheaper than a laptop.

So long as VMware (that runs on my MP) can run the latest Linux I have
access to 'current' browsers, and needn't be driven off of this hardware.
We're using 20.04 and 22.04 Ubuntu currently.

Part of my job is being on call, which means I need to be fairly close in time
to providing useful technical support.  (Translation: newly-fixed software.)
So, defense in depth is fully warranted.

2023-09-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
My dad's was a heap, barely ran at best.

The worst part is he sold it to get a Vega. This was when my mom drove a Pinto.

After the Pinto got wrecked they got a Lynx which was a Mercury badged Escort.
Dad replaced the Vega with a Tempo. The Lynx was rusted completely out within 5
years.

I've learned, whatever my dad think is a good car, is not a good car.

Re: [MBZ] PC

2023-09-18 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
The M1/M2 Apples look intriguing, but they really don't have enough
memory for (some of) what I do. With 12 cores and 48GB of RAM in
the MP I can simulate an entire Park at once, should I need to. I can
probably run 6-10 simultaneous VMs, which is more than enough. Need
even more VMs? Well, the MP can hold maybe 96GB of RAM if I need
it to. I doubt I ever shall.

Also, I need Intel Windows, because that's what the Park is using.
You can't do this via VM cross-architecture, not at this time. And it's
best if I'm running Intel Linux, since that is what the Park is using.
I can (and do) upload binaries I've tested at home directly to the Park.
So, Intel host hardware, no choice.

For _personal_ use an M1/M2 Mac would be just dandy, but I've already
got these MP, MBP and Mini Intel assets, and backups for same. No need
to waste money, or have to carry more crap around. The next Mac I buy
could well be M1/M2, but who knows when that might be?

We have four 30" Cinema displays here: one for each resident, with one
in reserve. They are very nice displays! Well worth preserving. Mine is
hooked to a 4-port KVM, and four source computers.

I have three OWC docks for my MBP, one in each of its stationary locations.
Keyboards, displays, and mice also. On the road I make do with the bare
laptop, but that's not very satisfactory, and drove the dock installations for
the places I was most likely to go. I don't have a spare MBP, but am using

Re: [MBZ] Many receipts, offers considered!

2023-09-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
My dad had a Maverick in the early '80s.

The new pickup thing could be the greatest car in the world. I'll NEVER have
one. I'd rather walk...

They get boatloads of money for licensing O365 and Azure. I can’t recall
exactly how many millions of dollars my employer pays them annually for our G5
and O365 instances, but it’s a lot. And even after this they’re still digging
for more, like charging for log transmission and retention, for example.

I see O365 and Azure as a Swiss Army knife. Sure, they can do a lot of
different things, but they don’t do any of them in an exemplary manner.

My PC appears to have crashed. This is a system I built probably 10 or
more years ago, maybe much longer. And over the years IIRC have upgraded
the MB. It had a 1.5tb HDD as well as a 1tb SSD. Over the last couple of
months I have noticed a high pitched whining sound. Seemed to start and
stop. This was coming from the SSD. It then got to where when booting the
cmos wouldn’t even see the SSD. System seemed to boot fine otherwise. At
one point in the last week system seems extremely slow to boot. I also
ordered a deal where you can plug in drive to a device that connects to
PC. With SSD connected I finally got it to recognize the drive but when
trying to access, sits there and then gives I/O error drive not accessible.

Installed SSD back in machine, same thing. Also, I have noticed that even
without the SSD installed the main HDD is started and stopping all the
time and takes forever to load windows. At the moment machine won’t even
load windows, just goes into a repair then says not able to repair. Only
option is to try to have to reinstall windows.

Back to SSD, tried connecting it to a laptop and it shows the drive which
appears to have 2 partitions but clicking on either one, it spins/loads
for a few minutes. Strange thing is when viewing these drives in windows
it doesn’t show capacity and free space. Eventually it basically says
drive inaccessible. I need to recover this drive. Any ideas or software
 that might work?

Point of the post. Thinking it’s time for a new system. Should I just
order new MB, memory, hard drive etc, build a completely new system, or
just buy a commercially prebuilt one such as HP etc? The prices of these
seem so cheap these days and will already have OS installed maybe that
makes the most sense? If I go this route I will then attempt to connect
these drives externally to recover data.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Re: [MBZ] PC

2023-09-18 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Jim and others,

I just recently migrated to a Mac Mini M2 as a replacement for my 2010 Mac Pro
“cheesegrater” with 128GB RAM, dual 3.5 GHz processors, multiple drives, etc.,
etc.

I was forced to move up to a platform that would support later versions of web
browsers so I could work from home. As Jim probably knows, there is an
“emulator” for lack of a better description, known as “OpenCore”, that would
allow me to run current Mac OS’ on my cheesegraters (I have a total of 4, but
only two were in service.) However, while these appear to work just fine, I
found there to be stability issues with some applications. Not good for a work
computer.

Even with my M2 Mini I have an external spindle drive (6TB WD Gold enterprise
class) that my TimeMachine backups are stored on. It used to “live” in the Mac
Pro. The Mini has a 512 GB SSD which will die long before the spindle drive
will, I’m betting (and yes, I got AppleCare!)

This is an aside for Jim and any other legacy Macs:

I wanted to keep my 30” Cinema Displays, which are DVI+ interface. I found some
Thunderbolt to DVI+ adapters on Amazon for about $65/each, and they work quite
well. The only issue is that the Mini only has two USB C/Thunderbolt ports. I
bought an OWC external drive enclosure/hub that gives me additional ports and a
place for my 6TB TimeMachine spindle drive along with a 2TB SSD for good
measure. I use the SSD for storing pictures, music, and documents to unload
storage from the boot SSD on the Mini. These are also backed up to the
TimeMachine spindle drive.

All in all, the transition was quite simple and has worked well. What’s even
better is that I can put the Mini and the external drive/hub in my backpack and
take them when I travel, making moving between locations a lot easier!

Microsoft doesn't try too hard anymore about copy-protecting Windows. They are
stuffing more and more adware and tracking into it so the more people they can
get using it the more money they make.

As a company, however, Windows is not their future. They are selling cloud
services now. Office365 and Azure. They are milking Windows for money but it's
not their flagship product anymore.

Our local dealership had one for awhile. A typical case of marketer disconnect,
"People have positive associations with the Mustang name so if we slap that
name on it people will like it."

You could make an electric Mustang that people would like, what they've made is
a family crossover and slapped the Mustang badge onto it.

Good plan. That's what I'm doing.

Oops. Worst of all possible worlds: slower-than-desired operation, with data
stored
on faster-than-necessary "Surprise! You lose!" SSD storage. Ugh.

Reminds me of that story about the wind farm. The hooked up things backwards
and
had the world's biggest and expensive fan! It was the upstream folks who
noticed and
asked the pointy question: why are you DRAWING power instead of sending it to
us?

> My main concern right now is my database file for my vehicle service record
> program.

As it should be. At work we spent considerable time laying out a protection
strategy
for the main database. Defense in depth, that's what's important. Multiple
threat scenarios,
multiple solutions in place. We are using an open source database, so vendor
perfidy is
also protected against.

Another local seasonal business was struck by ransomware recently. They were
'down' for
a week while they tried to recover. Knock on wood, it would be more like an
hour for us.
The most significant time loss is expected to be determining exactly what
happened, and which
recovery strategy is best to pursue to minimize data loss.

Consider the nature of automatic backups carefully. A naive approach has ALL
copies of your
data vulnerable to damage or loss at once. You don't want today's (failed)
backup attempt to
destroy yesterday's good backup too.

Re: [MBZ] PC

2023-09-18 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I’m not sure what else I have on that drive, but it’s essentially a clone of
the primary hard drive but over time has had other files added. I think my
original intention was to run the OS and applications off the SSD and have the
HDD as backup/storage. Store files there etc. It somehow ended up backwards
with the HDD running primary. My main concern right now is my database file for
my vehicle service record program. Everytime it starts it automatically backs
up. It should its primary file and the backup file was supposed to be going to
the HDD. I had what I thought was the backup file but it turns out it’s out of
date by about 2 years. Not sure yet what else I have on that SSD.

After I get this sorted out best I can, I will be taking a much better approach
to backups

Re: [MBZ] PC

2023-09-18 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
I wish you luck in your recovery adventures. I suspect that you've made it
harder
for yourself than you perhaps intended.

I have put considerable thought, and effort, into my computing architecture.
All the
work was in setup, in day-to-day use I don't have to think about the complexity.
Here's the TL;DR version.

SSDs fail, catastrophically. They usually don't give you any advance warning
either,
and the data, once lost, is GONE. (Spinning drives can sometimes be coerced
into
giving you one last copy of data, as they fail.) You MUST be prepared for
eventual,
inevitable failure, regardless of medium. If you are not, you are being a fool.

See: http://formicapeak.com/~jimc/flash.html
and remember that currently all SSDs
are built out of flash memory. Reality can be harsh, which sucks. Deal with
it.

My main system, this one, is a Mac Pro from 2009. It has four internal SATA
drive bays.
I use a 120GB SSD to hold the OS and applications. It boots very fast as a
result of this SSD.
If/when it craps, everything there can be regenerated. In other words, there
are no critical
data located on the SSD. (It has 12 3GHz Xeon cores, 24 hyperthreads, and 48GB
of RAM.
It never even breathes hard no matter what I throw at it. It is a magnificent
beast. I have
a spare, if it should fail.)

Though fairly unusual these days, it IS possible to partition the entire system
across
multiple physical drives. Macs are Unix-based, and Unix systems have always
supported
such partitioning. I think Windows can do something similar, but I'm not
familiar with it
enough to say for sure. For sure Linux can do this partitioning too.

My home directory (under which, as is typical for all Unix systems, ALL
personal data is located)
is on 2TB spinning media. It's slower, but is not subject to degradation with
use, unlike SSDs.
The slower speed is essentially unnoticeable, as very few applications spend
any significant
time reading/writing to data files. (Not when compared to swapping in and out
chunks of the
applications themselves.) There are exceptions, of course.

ALL of this system is backed up via Time Machine. Besides its utility in
recovering past
versions of files, it is primarily there to provide catastrophic recovery. If
a drive fails, either
SSD or spinning, a replacement can be jacked into place and then a full restore
can be performed
to the replaced device. It takes time, but the failure is as if it never
happened. The most that
is at risk is the last hour's work, because that's Time Machine's basic cycle
time.

My Time Machine server is using a 4-drive RAID 0, with only two of the drives
in-server at
any given time. The other two are rotated into service periodically, and serve
as off-line
(and off-site) backup, for protection against fire and theft, etc. My data is
never all in one
place at one time. Ever. It would take something like an asteroid strike to
get it all, in
which case I probably wouldn't be in a position to care anyway.

Because the bulk of my working day is spent in Linux and Windows virtual
machines,
via VMware, the virtual machine file store is NOT part of Time Machine's
purview. (This is
because the VM files are not file-by-file, but device-by-device, which means
that these few
large files would be continually churning into Time Machine's store, ruining
its utility.) I have
to be cognizant of that, and ensure that my data within the VMs is protected
via some means
other than Time Machine.

Due to the nature of my work, I'm using Subversion source-code-control tools
for this. This is
weaker than I'd like, and I suppose I really should find some sort of Time
Machine-like tool that
runs inside Linux. (I only do final testing under Windows, all development and
most testing is
done under Linux. I'm using a multi-platform Lazarus IDE.) But so far I
haven't been sorry that
I still have that level of exposure to loss. If I get particularly nervous I
use rsync to save
away copies of involved work to other places from which I could recover at need.

The VM store is on 2TB rotating media, not SSD. (Third drive bay.) This IS
definitely slower than optimal,
but I am willing to tolerate this because I don't save/restore VMs all that
often, and I cannot tolerate
sudden surprise failure of the VM store. On rotating media there is no
degradation, and failures
usually start showing up as retries and other things that can alert me to
problems before they
become catastrophic. When an SSD fails, it's usually suddenly, without
warning, and final.
No, thank you.

Recently I bought another external drive for my laptop, which is my backup
computing environment.
I deliberately selected a spinning 2TB drive, because it's primarily for the VM
store. Yes, it's more
delicate and slower than an SSD. I don't care, I simply cannot tolerate flash
memory's inherent
failure characteristics there.

[MBZ] PC

2023-09-18 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
My PC appears to have crashed. This is a system I built probably 10 or more
years ago, maybe much longer. And over the years IIRC have upgraded the MB. It
had a 1.5tb HDD as well as a 1tb SSD. Over the last couple of months I have
noticed a high pitched whining sound. Seemed to start and stop. This was coming
from the SSD. It then got to where when booting the cmos wouldn’t even see the
SSD. System seemed to boot fine otherwise. At one point in the last week system
seems extremely slow to boot. I also ordered a deal where you can plug in drive
to a device that connects to PC. With SSD connected I finally got it to
recognize the drive but when trying to access, sits there and then gives I/O
error drive not accessible.

Installed SSD back in machine, same thing. Also, I have noticed that even
without the SSD installed the main HDD is started and stopping all the time and
takes forever to load windows. At the moment machine won’t even load windows,
just goes into a repair then says not able to repair. Only option is to try to
have to reinstall windows.

Back to SSD, tried connecting it to a laptop and it shows the drive which
appears to have 2 partitions but clicking on either one, it spins/loads for a
few minutes. Strange thing is when viewing these drives in windows it doesn’t
show capacity and free space. Eventually it basically says drive inaccessible.
I need to recover this drive. Any ideas or software that might work?

Point of the post. Thinking it’s time for a new system. Should I just order new
MB, memory, hard drive etc, build a completely new system, or just buy a
commercially prebuilt one such as HP etc? The prices of these seem so cheap
these days and will already have OS installed maybe that makes the most sense?
If I go this route I will then attempt to connect these drives externally to
recover data.

It sprinkled here a little bit Saturday morning. I went down to work on one of

basically nothing happened.

Yesterday was glorious, one of those early fall days with the temp perfect and
a bit of wind. We scouted a pond I've been trying to hunt but have never been
able due to low water. Saw 14 wood ducks in the air at once. Woodies tend to be
