Blinker maybe has no impact on energy saving, but you will drop amperage draw
using LED for always on applications. BiL changed out all lamps to LED in his
rig and amperage went from 70 to 7.

I was thinking about swapping in LED to the headlamps. Pretty cost ineffective
if that application would not work. The glare shield in the euro lamps reduces
light bleed head on and a bit to the side. Not silvered so it does not reflect
photons back toward the reflectors.

I am not planning to subject this car to any known extremes where a less sturdy
solution would fail. These are the same lamps as FLAPS peddles, I just went to
the source, instead of paying FLAPS to floor them. The car will be put to bed
for the winter, and come out to play when moderate temps prevail.

All the lenses and things have been cleaned up. I did not see reason to incur
fiscal damage by having Classic Center source brand new when these are quite
good. They are by no means original equipment. Enough body work has taken
place on the car to have newer lighting in the past decade or so. Fresh sheet
metal and off the shelf lighting. I wanted to upgrade visibility and reduce
power draw on the old wiring

That sounds like my situation. Fifteen years ago the messed up electric
furnace crapped out in Feb. Three weeks without heat, and getting ready to
redo the kitchen. Switch to gas, got the antiquated electric panel upgrade to
new, and all new furnace and WH.

Old furnace was on knob and tube era wires, but was actually using a pair of 30
amp breakers to power the 80 amp furnace. Wiring was orange extension cord
grade, PO had done, and he went to Hawaii every winter so never used it between
Nov-Apr. He had also cobbled together five sub panels with a veritable
chronological layout of fusing. 1927 house with him living in it from 1940
until 1994.

Concierge care. I use that. Beats the heck out of all the crap you deal with
at standard medico visit. Get all the time you need to explore all issues. MD
is more relaxed too. Office staff reduced to the two receptionist, instead of
a cadre of file clerks and insurance slaves. Easier for them to budget for
the year and lower overhead that is reflected in a higher quality experience
once you enter the door.

Smokes, slurpees, twinkies, candy bars, hookers, meth, video gaming. That is

Re: [MBZ] OT: rust converter

2012-07-08 Thread clay monroe
POR 15.

Three step process that is just as you outline. Wire brush or sand to bare
metal and thorough rust removal. Use the marine cleaner they sell. Spray on
and agitate any surface dirt that comes off. Rinse it off. Then you use the
etching spray as the second part of the process. It needs to be kept moist for
about 20 minutes. Turns the rust into a black oxidate and prepares the
surface. Get the work site bone dry and you can use pressure spray, roller or
brush to coat.

This stuff is soupy and cures by moisture. Also thin coating, so it goes a
lggg way. brush on will allow enough time to let it set up between
coats. Three coats are good. More will not hurt. Rust is never going to go
away. You have to cut any rust out to get it gone. The POR encapsulates the
rust and any wet that gets on it, just makes it harder.

Sadly, the stuff is not UV stable or abrasion/contusion resistant. You then
have to use the POR Primer product to etch the surface to accept paint or
undercoating.

Two benjamins for a co-pay. Sign up to be an agent with the local social
services agency and get the obamacare certification.

Collection of premiums is simple. All establishments purveying "social" ills
will scan your obamacare card when you purchase said items and tally them at
the end of the month. Send the data file to the Agency. Each "user" will have
his data collated and tabulated. The total is then invoiced to the federal,
state and local welfare offices. The funds are deducted from any tax payer
funded entitlements. If a negative balance is achieved, the "user" is recalled
and fitted with an embedded spinal cord rfid tracker, shipped to an
infrastructure labor site and provides for the greater good until his debt is
erased.

[MBZ] seat motor fix

2012-07-11 Thread clay monroe
The passenger seat is out of the 95 e300D. I removed it because the thing
would not slide on the rails front and back. Both rear and forward seat
elevation motors are able to lift the seat. It also pivot the seat back in
both directions. When I use the door controls, all motors fire up or make
noise if they are not actually moving the seat.

Right now the thing is upside down in the garage. I popped the wire connection
cover off so that I could power up each pair of wires and see what they do.
Black and white are lift at the front. Yellow and green lift the rear, purple
and ? make noise but no motion. I think this is the problematic set.

Has anybody done the repair to once more activate motion along the rails to get
the dang thing to move toward and away from the dash? All assistance is welcome

Sorry Jim, forgot to say these are the euro lights.

Rebuilt them, as the ones I got off ebay had lived underwater and killed the
reflectors. Two adjustment screws down low to up/down and sideways adjust.
One light broke both these adjustment points so I had to fashion a solution.
Side ways no longer functions for sideway adjustment, I have to remove the unit
and do it by hand. The other light has decided it too no longer wants to be
aimed without removal

I did not take Gump out for extended road trips because she did not have cruise
and was manual. After 400 miles, my knees hurt from keeping the Go pedal down.
The 17 year old E300D, on the other hand is a joy to drive all over creation.
Cruise works, and even with dead ACC, I would take her anyplace. Seattle to
Butte, MT or down to Phoenix. Took her from Seattle to DC and then back by way
of Horlando. I got 35mpg all day long, and was doing 660 mile days between
tanks of fuel.

Frosch, on the other hand gets all of 200+ miles on a tank and I would need to
rebuild the old Ford/Philco CC to take her beyond a tanks worth of fuel in a
day.

[MBZ] fog lense replacement

2012-07-19 Thread clay monroe
I sourced some Bosch lamps for Frosch. The glass is not good. One has been
sandblasted and rock chipped. The other must have been hit by a larger rock
and has a larger hole and cracked all the way. I see fleabay has fresh glass
for these things, but I am not able to figure out how the old stuff goes away.
It seems to be sealed to the reflector as a unit.

Do I apply much heat to soften the seal? I did pry, but all that resulted in
was a nice chip off the side of the glass and no movement of the reflector away
from the glass.

assistance please

[MBZ] LED goodness

2012-07-22 Thread clay monroe
Being a patient person can be helpful at times.

I have been futzing around with Frosch for the past few months. Dodging the
rain and seeing how to make up for 38 years of benign neglect. Mostly just age
and wear, but nobody spent time or cash to keep the car on the road for at
least eight years. Niggling matters that added up. I am really pleased that I
got such a complete example for such a reasonable sum.

LED upgrade for lighting has reduced the draw on the antique wiring harness.
This should allow more sparky things to go to the motor, and fewer electrons to
increase entropic effects on the rest of the car. Cooked wire and ancient
insulation will thank me.

I sourced a pair of Bosch fogs at a PnP not affiliated with the chinese. Volvo
or Saab, but with some application of elbow grease, they are now hanging from
the bumper. Cracked lenses. Seem to be sealed to the reflector, so I would
like to know how to put a good lens on. They use H3 bulbs, and the ones inside
were dead. For some reason Frosch never had fogs. Found the wires tucked up
below the radiator. Had to put a connector for plugging in the bulb. Removed
the old wires, and hooked the Benz wires up. Looks good. WIth LED bulbs and
fresh glass, they will look great. Not all kosher, but only a connoisseur
would figure out what was wrong about it.

I already renovated the tail light and the euro marker/signals to LED. Euro
headlamps will remain Halogen, since I was not able to find an LED that gave
the photon flow I wanted. With not enough electron draw, the blinker relay
thought all the bulbs were dead and went into fibrillation when indicating a
turn. Research as to what and where the relay lived was confusing. The
various web sites and relay sources thought the blinker relay was part of the
hazard switch in the early R107. But Frosch does not have the extra tall
hazard switch. So must be where it lives behind the console. But it really
lives behind the instrument cluster. Simple three pin relay. So I ordered a
cheap chinese relay to see if that would solve the issue.

Cheap chinese relays have so far solved the indicator speed issue. Old relay
has three pins, 31, 49. & 49a. Chinese has those as well, but in a different
configuration. I soldered on two inches of wire to the spade pins and topped
that with round pins. Twist the wires into the proper configuration and
inserted them into the holes. Timed instead of draw and the lamps tick tick
tick, instead of spaz like grand mal.

While I had the cluster out, I decided to replace the gauge circuit board. It
had cracked all the way and was not making good contact, which I thought may
have impact on wonky Tach. Had to unsolder the old wires which had the cluster
rheostat for the one on the new board where the rheostat was missing, the wires
were twisted to make full bright contact. This should also help the oil
pressure gauge, since it lived over the broken board. We will see.

Next task will be to refresh the convertible top seals. Both soft and hard top
have crumbly old rubber. Heck, all the rubber seals are sad. Not as dead as
Gump, so I have some leeway on the doors and trunk. The tops are aged beyond
design parameters. The hood pad is aged to the point of crumbling. I have
another product, foil covered lint pad. That will be a spring job.

remove the calipers and work on a bench. should replace fluid every two years
and this way you can put fresh fluid in.

I doubt you have so much fluid that you would cause it to overflow if you push
the caliper open

[MBZ] I fraxxed it

2012-08-01 Thread clay monroe
Small troubles with Frosch. She was getting a bit hot under the bonnet and
before the needle pegged out in the red for too long I got her back home. It
was just a short jaunt around the block anyway.

Popped the hood and upper hose was blazing hot and stiff as could be. Lower
hose was far less warm and soft as mush. Undid the cap on the overfow to let
pressure out and that allowed upper hose to flex more. Seems to indicate
failure of the thermostat. Looked around for a local supplier, since I want to
get her back on the road. Turns out Behr is special order and takes days, so
found lesser brand that would be available in three hours.

In the meanwhile, I undid the battery, loosen the bolts and moved the
alternator out of the way. Rusted up bolts holding the thermostat housing came
out with some persuasion, but trying to get the dang thing to let loose was
another story. No matter how much subtle persuasion I exerted, it would not
come undone. Used a bit more persuasion with a large rubber mallet, then moved
to small BFH.

Wouldn't you know, piece of 4x wood I had under the hood awaiting use as
persuasion tool slips with all my thumping and slides the dang wire to contact
the positive side, making a circuit and the already baked to death wires from
there to the alternator catch fire. Sprayed the bejessus out of it with ABC
tank and decided to stop while I was behind. Sent the car into the garage for
its own safety. Indy will make it all good. I pay the piper for being a
dimwit cheapskate SOB.

TEX does have a much longer half life than leather. The cow hide cracks and
discolors. Needs far too much kind loving to keep it nice. Getting the skins
in Frosch back into shape has been a months long trial. The skins in the e300d
are old and cracking. Annual care has not been able to reverse, but only
marginally slow the damage. And with the swap in of a passenger seat with more
damage, I have my work cut out for me.

Do the center consoles in the sedan differ that greatly that I could use it to

2012-08-07 Thread clay monroe
I used sheepskins in Gump. Tex had see better days and was black. On the rare
sunny day, those seats would scorch your flesh. Cold days were made better
with skins. On Frosch, the skins she had were allowing the leather to over age
and I have not put them on again. Trying to get the leather to be supple again.
Spring cleaning and stripping off skins would let you care for the leather at
least once a year.

I do have a set that fits the w107 seats. They are old and have been washed to
try to get soaked in sweat to go away. Not full wool, they are sporty, cut
out/shaved sections. Very kalifornia. Just the seat part, no headrest wools.
Will need fresh under strapping to hold them in place for your seats.

[MBZ] The dead have risen!!!!!

2012-08-07 Thread clay monroe
My Indy is GOD

Frosch suffered a massive death due to idiot owner who made the wire harness go
up in smoke. Indy got the car last week and had to order the harness from the
Fatherland. Black Forest Elves grabbed Rumplestiltskin and have him weave the
thing for Mercedes.

I got a call late this afternoon that he needs the lift for other work. He
pushed through today and got her back running well. Sort of fried more than we
had thought. I had the alternator from Gump that got rebuilt, so he installed
that.It has not that same pin out location as what was destroyed in Frosch.
We had to get a new battery as well. A few toasted wires not in the harness
need attention. Temp gauge is pegged, so that wire needs attention. Cooked
some of the vac lines, and I will need to chase that down. Tach used to be
pegged out, but now does not register.

Indy told me he had to quit chasing gremlins, or he would needlessly rack up a
huge bill. As it was, idiot tax was only $1200. I am going to reduce my under
hood wrenching to less destructive tasks. Hood pad, fluid and filters,
spiffing up the engine bay. Real wrenching will get sent to the shop. Dang
thermostat should have been a $100 task, including parts. I had the same poor
performance wrenching with Gump, and ended up paying $1k's to remedy the
stupidity I subjected her to.Clutch, water pump, brakes, starter and
alternator, oil pump, valves. That darn Gump was dirt cheap to get, but
rectifying the screw ups I subjected her to cost me thousands .

I have a few days to wash and wax to get her ready for the local show and shine
this weekend

I undid the positive lead, instead of negative. Was using wood and BFH to
persuade the thermostat housing to let go. Rested a 2x4 up toward the firewall
and in making space, it moved and contacted the battery. Smoke and stuff
ensued.

Got her washed and vac out the chemicals from the cabin. That stuff gets
EVERYWHERE. Lexol on the seats, 303 protectant on the canvas, Griot clay bar,
so she is baby butt smooth. Spray on meguires wax for now and real carnuba
treatment in the morning.

I should have learned to pay better attention with Gump, but "knew" I could do

part. At least with Gump I had MB shop manuals to follow.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Clinical depression. was: occupying the deadly 3rdrow.

2012-08-25 Thread clay monroe
I just got back from taking two weeks to support my little sister, who had her
husband of 22 years walk out. She moved the family from PNW to Missoula, MT so
she could be a college professor. Hubby was in and out of jobs since the last
election and had a hard time getting good jobs in the new town. Sister gave up
her partnership in a great litigation firm to follow Her dream of teaching.
Big drop in income, bratty kids, she got overly busy with her teaching and BiL
got short end of the stick.Six months ago, some local woman set her eyes on
him, and went in for the kill. While sister was not paying attention, he
decided that life with kids and her was not a happy place. We all know it was
a depressing place to live, but he did make a move to get himself a better life.

[MBZ] Like Buttah

2012-09-03 Thread clay monroe
I have been away for a few weeks helping my sister deal with being left by the
father of her children. Las time I drove Frosch was the Seattle Show and
shine, then under the car cover she went.

Pulled the car out from her cocoon and went to the Caffeine and Gasoline Griots
host each first Saturday of the month. Early morning gathering of roughly like
minded folks with cars in various conditions of spiffiness. Some are rare and
pretty cool, others are rat rods or garage queens and some are just a varied
iteration of the same model. Either way, it is a nice start to the weekend to
get some java and a sweet treat then wander the parking area admiring cars.
September was going to host Italian iron later in the morning, so a few red
cars were there. Rolls Royce had new models from their stable on show. Ugly
cars now.

I enjoyed chatting with a few folks and seeing the cars while sipping italian
coffee. Not the usual service of java, but the donuts were the same. Really
like the Fiat Topolino much more than the red go fast cars.

Drive down was uneventful. About 30 miles from my house to the headquarters.
By 10am it had warmed up, but not enough to go top down. Time to leave the
spaces for the incoming stallions, and such. Driving back home I was just
amazed at how smooth and dreamy this car was on the highway at speed. I really
like her. Not all rough and stumbly the way Gump was. I loved Gump, she was
simple and practical, but not smooth. Frosch is like silk. Smooth heavy
whipping cream drizzled on peaches freshly picked and cut in a bowl. Warm and
soft as a baby's tummy waiting for a raspberry by grandpa.

So, I skipped going right home and went to a Home Despot for garden supplies a
few miles north so I could extend my peaceful wheel time.

Yesterday I used the ROB and the new to me Griots carnuba wax on Frosch. I had
done a good enough job with the FLAPS stuff earlier in August, but want to get
her ready for winter storage with a stout coat of protection. I used the stick
wax. Sort of like the rub on deoderant stick that you wipe onto the buffer pad
in sparing amounts. It went on easily and buffed out to a great shine. I took
advantage of the morning clouds so that it would be cooler and instructions
said to not use on hot car or in full sun. Once finished, I washed SWMBA car.
It was still encrusted with the carcasses of plethora of insects Montana has to
offer this time of year.

I went back inside to finish the sunday paper and make a light lunch. Changed
out the laundry.Looked out the window and she was beckoning me to take her
out. So I did. We hit the road and ended up at a small town ice cream shop
for a fresh blueberry shake. Took the back roads all the way home. Three
hours of just marveling at how comfortable and smooth, sensuous the feel of
driving her was.

phoo! Takes all of five days if you take your time and lollygag. I did
Orlando to Seattle in five days. Started at 2pm in FL and ended up in Seattle
at noon five days later. Took time out to visit Asheville and see Biltmore one
day after driving country roads through GA to get there. Did a few long hauls
through Missouri, Kansas, Colorado and Wyoming. Car wanted to spend the day at
the SLC MB dealer with a stuck EGR while it went for rides up and down the lift
while the techs scratched their collective noggins for six hours.

I figure you could take a weekend out and arrive Friday morning. Make it to
Rapid City for dinner, then KC for dinner the next day. Sunday dinner could be
Memphis BBQ, and home Monday evening.

Heck, you cover gas and lodging and I just may do it for you.

Re: [MBZ] Like Buttah

2012-09-04 Thread clay monroe
Not tag team, I just got carried away with how easy an adventure it would be to
haul it down south at this time of year. I forget that it is Hurricane season,
so would have to skirt some clouds and rain. More thought would need to be
put into the adventure. I do not fly, so would have to source a ride north if
I deliver a car south.

Re: [MBZ] LED brake lights

I did that on Frosch. Got the inexpensive ones off eBay from china. They are
a bunch less cash than retail. Factory seconds with a bit of excess solder or
odd alignments. Better than $16 a bulb. Good lighting, but not a huge spread
of photons. Best seen head on. You have to swap in a timed blinker relay, as
the OEM is looking for lots of draw.

I did the swap to reduce the amperage on the ancient wires in the car. This
way more electrons flow to the spark plugs instead of sucking them to make hot
photons. I got the cheaper LED that just make light, not all fancy

In neither Gump nor the 95 E300D have leaking delivery valves had an effect on
starting. The primer pump did issue with getting fuel to the IP in Gump. The
leakage was really obvious though, so there was no real mystery about there
being a leak.

Our prices are headed that way. last fueling was 4.28/gal. California and WA
distillers have had technical issues which reduced supply. Tropical storms
will reduce raw oil flow into the south. Alaska is switching over to shale
from the easy to get crude which has been headed to asia anyway.

That would be a PnP part I suspect. You could pay retail, but for about $100,
one can yank it instead

Heater box and air intake can tend to oxidize, or hold water to make rust
happen. The underside of the hood and the attachments to the body will pool
water and begin to rust. Frosch has been gifted with new sheetmetal due to PO
poor driving, so I can not state that fenders and such are not rust prone areas

2012-09-27 Thread clay monroe
I just made it to 1k on the most recent oil change in Frosch. Almost down a
liter and the hot pressure is still really low. Not all the way to zero, as it
was with the first oil I changed after 400 miles, but it does go a little below
1 bar at hot idle. I do not need to change the oil as it is still really
clean, so thought I should try motor honey. Seems to be working. Have not
taken her out for a really good long drive, but pressure is holding warm idle
at almost 2 bar.

Re: [MBZ] was Flat wheels NOW oil!

2012-09-30 Thread clay monroe
I drove the car to Tacoma yesterday for the Griots All euro car gathering.

After getting up to speed on the freeway I noticed the car was running pretty
hot, but the outside temp was less than 60f. Poop! Must be the darn honey
stuff. Kept an eye on it for 30 miles then RR tire picked up something bad and
two miles later I had a flat. Open the boot and found the tool kit was
missing. Evil thief! So I had to call AAA and wait 75 minutes for the guy to
show with a 17mm socket.

I drove home and decided to remove the steel wheels and give a refurb. in prep
for gaining new tires. Light sanding and fresh rattle can black primer and
semi-gloss. Got the driver side wheels off. Dropped the car so I could turn
it around and get the front wheel off. Thing will not start now.

New battery, fresh spark plug and wires, just filled the tank with fuel.
Starter spins up great. Does not catch. No fuel situation or no electrons?
I will read up in the Haynes manual as well as MB CD manual for ideas.

Re: [MBZ] Mobil supersyn

I too am interested in that answer. I picked up a case of M1 20-50 today since
it is on sale at $5.50qt. There was this advance stuff, but the check boxes on
the shelf data card seemed to indicate it was less gooder than the true M1.

Re: [MBZ] crack

2006-10-06 Thread clay monroe

I have yet to see 80MPG in Gump in town at 20mph.

Dude is on severe crack

Speaking of which, I watched a guy at the Goodwill outlet trying to
make a P 150 laptop go. He was plugging all sorts of cables and cords
in places, stuffing floppy and CD in it, shaking it, sniffing it,
gathering wires and simms, old PII cards around it.

Sad thing to see a mind that far gone

[MBZ] OR--leopard borked me

2008-08-20 Thread clay monroe
Upgraded sawtooth G4 with 1gig ram, dual 120gig drives, 1.4ghz cpu,
10.4.11 updating to leopard. Went fine until it rebooted and then
the computer just shuts down. Needed 12 gig for install. Install
disk had 25 gig available.Using logged startup, so I see sort of
what happens, but before I can read the error, it just shuts down.
Maybe 25 lines or so.

Any ideas?

Lack of disk space? Borked the logic board?

Re: [MBZ] OT Difference on Taxes

2008-08-20 Thread clay monroe
I am not picking or choosing who goes or stays. There are too many
folks around and sooner or later there will be a rebalancing. I
suspect it will be really messy and will take a very long time to
crawl back out of. Sad to see all the accumulated knowledge going
missing again, as it did when Rome fell and Alexandria was sacked for
the last time.
